My Macbook Pro says Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.74.157 and will not be able to connect to the internet.
I just got my new Macbook Pro today. When I tried to connect it to my Wi-Fi at home it won't connect. I put in my WEP key correct every time and it keeps saying "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.74.157 and will not be able to connect to the internet" . I connect my iPod touch to this same Wi-Fi all the time plus my other laptop and my phone and it works fine. Please help !! I use Verizon Fios modem/router.

Use Keychain Access to Delete all Internet/Router Passwords etc.. Then Roboot..

Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results. -

You need, I think, either a router with wi-fi or an airport (express or extreme). The iPad needs to connect to to a network. In my case, I use an airport express and both my iMac and iPad 2 connect to the Internet through the airport device.

Although i can use Snow Leopard at the same Library via a external hard drive and when the same mbp was running Lion it also didn't have any issues connecting at the same library.

I was watching my ATV3 and it suddenly stopped. Power-Cycle the modem.... though it looks like your internet services may have gone down.. or something else upstream has gone kaut.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Sorry we have no info.. so description of the problem..
Are you using wireless? If so on what? Do you have a TC?
Is this a new TC and failed to setup correctly? Or you have TC or some other wireless router that has been working fine and now failed?
Plug in by ethernet? Does it now work?
Reboot the TC.. Does it now work?
Reboot the whole network.. restart in order.. modem.. router.. TC.. whatever other network equipment.. clients.
Do some clients work and others fail?
Press and hold reset on the TC. Redo the setup.. change the TC setup to fixed channels and SMB names.
We cannot give specific answers to such vague faults. -

What model Time Capsule do you have?
If you changed the system over from another router.. have you rebooted the entire network.. particularly a cable modem.. did you power off for at least 20min..

Up until about a week ago I have not had a single internet connectivity problem. Then, all of the sudden airport will no longer connect and it keeps telling me that "Airport has self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet." These steps often sort out this problem...
System Preferences > Network
Select the AirPort from the left hand side
Click on the Locations combo box and select Edit Locations...
Click on + to add a new location, call it "Home" (or anything else you prefer)
Click on Advanced
Select the AirPort tab and enter your network name
Select TCP/IP tab.
Configure IPv4 Using DHCP
Now click on Renew DHCP Lease. After a few seconds you should get an IP address (probably 192.168.x.x)
Click on Proxies tab.
Select Auto Proxy Discovery and Use Passive FTP
Click on OK and Apply, etc.
