My macbook screen occasionally goes white

About 3 times a day, my macbook screen will freeze, and fade to white.  It remains that way for a few seconds and then slowly comes back to normal.  My mouse and all keys are locked up during this and it will first cover in little dots.
Any ideas?

UPDATE -
It is now morning and the MacBook is still exhibiting the symptoms where the screen blacks out and won't recover unless you press F1 - F2 and run the display brightness all the way off and then bring it up one tic of brightness.
I can reset SMC and it works normal again but if the computer goes to sleep the screen does the black out thing again. Changing the battery does not make a difference. Sage: that must have been a special case for you.
I notice the System Preferences - Energy Pane is unavailable if I try to open it it says Energy Pane unavailable.
I have multiple hard drives for this MacBook so I booted from a clean copy of 10.6.3. The energy pane is back normally and the screen doesn't black out even after the machine sleeps.
If your machine exhibits these symptoms then try this.

  • SCREEN OCCASIONALLY GOES BLACK

Hi: I have a Mini Intel, 512MB Ram. I use Safari and MS Word. Today, after having the Mini for about 9 months, the screen occasionally goes black, and stays that way for about 5-10 seconds. It occurs every so often, like about once every 10 minutes. I have repaired permissions, ran Yasu, checked the settings on Energy Saver, where I have the computer on all the time; the display is scheduled to go to sleep when the computer is not being used for 17 minutes; these are locked. I haven't had this problem before. I'd appreciate it if you could give me some suggestions as to what might be wrong and how to fix it. Thanks, Jerry.

Thanks so much for your replies. I haven't changed the monitor from its original settings; made sure the cables are in firmly; I use cables for all my peripherals. I checked the Console and I may have had a Kernel Panic (I don't know, but it said something about Kernels when the screen went black). Moving the mouse didn't hurry up its return to normal. So, I again ran Yasu. I've been on the computer now for about 20 minutes and so far it's been working fine. I'm very grateful for your quick replies and for your advice. Hopefully, it's fixed now. Best wishes, Jerry.

in need of some help my curve screen keeps going white after turning it on sum time it come on ok for about 10mins then it locksup and go white again will try any thing to sort it

    curtismartin50,
We from what you have described there seems to be an issue with the software on the phone or the phone itself. You can try to address the software by following these steps below:
    1) Have you performed a hard reset, by pulling the battery out and waiting 2-3 minutes before rebooting when you place the battery back in?
    2) You may want to try upgrading the device software by downloading BlackBerry Device Software fro blackberry.com
    3) Have you performed a full "Wipe" on your BlackBerry Smartphone, you can do this by going to "Options" > "Security Options" > "General Settings" and press your Menu Key to choose "Wipe Handheld"
Note that this will delete all data on your device and restore the unit back to factory defualts!
    Hope this helps

  • My White MacBook Screen Keeps Going To Black

For the past 2 days my less-than-2-yr-old white 13 in. MacBook has begun going to a black screen. If I really get close to the screen I can see the log-in window but cannot see my pointer. I'll hit "enter" and can faintly see the window asking if I'm sure I want to log off. Again, because I can't see the pointer, I'll hit "enter" and the computer will shut down. When I turn the computer back on it appears to be working fine. This happens while I'm running on adapter power (don't know if it also happens on battery power because I've not tried it), and I've noticed it happening only after I've left the computer unused for maybe an hour. I've tried changing the energy saver settings several ways, but nothing seems to prevent the black screen from recurring. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

If you live near a Micro Center the Unibody Whitebook is a very good deal. It's 799.00 and I've heard that Apple will match that price if you mention it. So if you don't need Firewire or a backlit keyboard the MB is a good buy right now.

  • My Macbook Pro (2011) freezes after the apple login logo appears. The screen just goes white. Please Help

When i start up the laptop, its proceeds normally with the chime and apple logo, but after that the screen goes white and nothing happens. You can hear the sound from within the machine become louder too.. Sometimes it proceeds to login fully but then there are times that it freezes whilst i am using it. It is currently working now as im typing this.. Please help

I would first try booting into Safe Mode then restarting normally. This will be a longer startup than normal in both safe mode and normal boot. That is normal.
I would then repair your drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If the problem is not resolved, then create a new admin user account. Set this account for auto-login. Then try restarting the computer.

  • Screen Flickers, Goes White, Goes Grey but Computer Responds Normaly

Ok, this has to be the right place to post, apparently I put this in the wrong thread originally. This is a new one on me. This started out of the blue. Sorry for the long post but I was trying to think of as much info as possible.
The screen on my power book laptop started flickering and fluttering and then it would suddenly start going white in the middle and work its way out. It actually goes kinda frosty blue for a second and there's an after image of whatever was on the screen last until the white takes over the screen, but the sound keeps playing. I've seen this happen to LCD's before when they're dieing (whimper) but when I close the lid and let my laptop go to sleep and then open it again, it comes back up like nothing even happened. The dieing LCD's never did that, they just went, hope you had all the info off that hard drive, say goodbye to old Broadway for me (you get the picture, or not ;o) ).
Then yesterday it did something new (ish). I've seen it do a couple of variations of this so far so bare with me, I'll try to get the info as accurate as I can. The screen did it's "going white act" and suddenly went grey, only it wouldn't come back. I put it to sleep, I turned it off, turned it back on, etc. It chimed, it booted up, it ACTED normal! Except that the screen was a light shade of grey! And then I would boot it up and it would randomly come back for a while and it would start all over. Flicker, blue/white/ghost, grey, scream (me, not the computer). And if the screen went out while the computer was running, the programs beneath it still responded to the keyboard commands. I could quit out of programs or even use the power and return key to turn the computer off, I could use the dimmer keys to turn the brightness to darker and lighter shades of grey (it's mocking me), and I was even able to eject disks from the drives. Things not possible when I had a kernel error two years ago (and I haven't seen the dreaded screen, ha, haven't seen much of anything!), and it doesn't seem to fit the description of the video display problems from here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573?viewlocale=en_US (but I could be wrong). At one point, I took out the battery and unplugged the power supply and left it a few minutes and the next time it booted up it did it just fine. So when it went out again I tried that again (which I don't like doing!) but that time it didn't work! After a few hours it randomly booted up on the battery and has been working ever since. It's so random I can't seem to track it!
I saw one forum on another site where some described a similar problem and blamed it on installing the last Flash player update which is when my problem started. My computer is old and kind of beat up. It was carted around to school for the first 5 years I had it (which includes the usual number of mishaps) and I had one of the hinges get stuck and broken too (rather spectacularly, pieces flying everywhere) but my dad was able to glue a support around it to stabilize it. But this? This started very suddenly and while it did happen right after I installed the player from the Adobe site, but I'm having a very hard time buying the Flash player theory from the other forum. Any ideas, things I can try, or is it Genius bar time? I suppose if I uninstall the player and it goes away that was the problem, any ideas how I do that? Sorry, again, for the long post but I was trying to think of as much info as possible. Thanks.

Hi, Kaytebb. It sounds to me as though you have a video cable problem.
Can you cause or change the video misbehavior by adjusting the tilt of the display, or even just by jiggling the display a little? If so, odds are that the cable that carries the signal from your Powerbook's GPU is damaged where it passes through the left hinge. I'm guessing that's the hinge that broke a while back, and that the damage got its start then, though symptoms might not have appeared for some time afterward. The sleep light and backlight cables go through the other hinge. All the cables are very delicate, but the video cable more so than the others: it's actually a bundle of tiny coaxial cables, each containing about 20 nearly hair-thin conductors, and the whole bundle is well under 1/8" in diameter. If any of the cables that make it up gets chafed or cut by a sharp broken edge, or if the whole bundle or any part of it gets pinched, almost anything can appear on the screen. The usual remedy is to replace the entire display assembly, because taking it apart to replace the cable is a miserable job. In your case, with the broken hinge already, there would be no point in replacing only the cable. But replacing the display may cost more than the machine is worth. The computer is now classified as "obsolete", so Apple won't work on it at all, not that you'd want to pay Apple's price for the work anyway; buying a used display (preferably with some kind of warranty) and installing it yourself is the only way it's likely to be worthwhile at all.
You don't say which Tibook model you have, but take-apart instructions for all of them are available here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/
    400/500MHz processor = "Mercury"
550/667MHz without DVI port = "Onyx"

  • My blackberry curve 8520's screen keeps going white

i have a blackberry curve 8520 and for about the last 2-3 weeks the screen has been going white nearly everyday at random times . last night i was watching a video on my phone on youtube and the screen went white . this also sometimes happens when i am watching videos on youtube , when i am surfing the internet on my blackberry throughout wi-fi , its sometimes just happens when i am just on the blackberry and after a reboot . when the screen does go white i take the battery out and put it back in ,it reboots and sometimes just before the reboot is finished it goes white or even after the reboot is finished it goes white straight away. i then have to put it on charge throughout the blackberry charger or the blackberry usb . yesterday i downloaded blackberry desktop manager and connected my blackberry to it and done a back up and then i tried taking the battery out and putting it back in and i never got the white screen but i started getting it again . please help and please be specific on what is causing this and how i can stop/prevent it

    Hi Solidbass,
You need to consider updating/reinstalling your device OS again.

  • MacBook screen keeps going black and won't reboot

I have a 15" MacBook Pro, Early 2011 running 10.9.2. This rather alarming problem started recently, about two weeks ago:
At random, my screen will "glitch out" and go black. This usually happens when performing some innocuous action like moving a window or opening a random app.
When in this state, the MacBook will not wake up so I have to do a hard reboot. Then the system will not make it back to the Finder. It will get to a solid gray screen, I can hear the fan ramp up and then it will shut itself down again.
The only way to reboot is to go into single user mode (command-S) and then run "/sbin/fsck -y" twice because the first run modifies my startup disk for some unreported reason. Then my MacBook will run fine for a couple hours before I have to repeat the process all over again.
I've run Apple's Hardware Test and everything came up fine. I did some research and found this old article, which describes a similar bug in the MacBook model prior to mine (late 2010), which suggests some kind of known graphics card hardware bug:
    http://www.cnet.com/news/apple-acknowledges-2010-macbook-pro-black-screen-bug/
Any solutions out there, beyond taking it to an Apple Store?
EDIT: I subsequently found this discussion, which describes the same defect:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25002119#25002119

I've found a solution — or rather a patch. I downloaded gfxCardStatus and set it as a Startup Item. It adds an icon and menu to Mac OS X's menu bar, and from there you can tell the system to use the "Integrated Only" graphics hardware instead of "Dynamic Switching."
This apparently prevents the system from using the "Discrete Only" graphics hardware, which in my case was causing the crashes.
This patch allows all graphics-intensive apps to run on my Mac, including iPhoto, Photoshop and SketchUp.
Apple, when are you going to address this problem? Your hardware test apps failed to find any hardware problems.

  • Macbook screen blinks, goes to a blue screen, and then acts like it restarted.

And the weird thing is, it never actually restarts--my entire home screen looks as though it has. Goes through all of the normal just-turned-on commands. It's done this to me twice; once while I was putting a file into my other computer's drop box, another while I was trying to save a document on Word. This happened over the course of two days. I just got my hard drive and battery replaced in the spring, and I have absolutely no idea what could have caused this. Any ideas?

Can startup using your install disk? If so click on the language then go to the top menu and run disk utilities and permission repair.  Otherwise do a system reset. Battery out power unpluged hold power button for 5 seconds. If the battery can't come out- With power pluged in hold down-Control Option Shift key while powering up release and boot up. Let me know how it works.
