My MBP sees burned CDs as blank, unwritten CDs??

I'm having a big problem with my MBP. When I put in a CDR with data written to it, the SuperDrive sees the CD as still blank. I can put the cd into a PC at kinkos and the files show up fine. This happens with every burned CD.
Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Unable to burn cds or view photos on burned dvd on new (feb 2011) MBP.

I have been unsuccessful in burning photo CDs.  It goes through the whole process and then at the end tells me that it was unable to complete the burn.  I use my old PC to burn the cds because I need the space on my camera.  I forgot about this until today when my photographer gave me a burned DVD of the photos she took of my kids.  The MBP says I inserted a blank dvd.  I went back to her and she pulled them all up on her PC.  I am new to Mac and am feeling like I wasted a ton of money because I have to keep going back to the old pc for all the things I wanted to do on a faster, newer computer

had a similar issue about it "not responding properly" and i went back to apple and got a new superdrive put in and have had no problems since.

  • MBP Won't Burn CDs Using External Drive

My internal optical drive in my 2006 MBP died because of something getting stuck in it, and I just got an external drive to replace it (Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for Mac and PC SE-S084C/RSBN). If I hook it up and put a DVD in, it functions normally - the DVD Player opens and plays the DVD. If I put a blank CD-R in, the box saying that a blank disc has been inserted comes up and give me the option of opening iTunes, etc. But then if I hit "Burn Disc" in iTunes or a Burn Folder from the Finder, it tells me to insert a blank disc. It seems to only recognize the internal (non-functioning) drive and not the external one when I want to burn CDs. Anyone have suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thanks!!

    Welcome to the discussion forums-
How about if you where to drag to the desktop the following file:
    com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist
You can find it in your user/home folder/library/preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist
Restart your computer and see if this solves the problem. if it does you can trash the plist file are return it if no change.

Try using a LensCleaner Disk first off. If that won't even run try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
Then use the Lens Cleaner again. Make sure your disks are immaculately clean.

  • Device filter Problems, can't burn cds in iTunes, Blank CDs appear to have

Problem was first noticed because I can't burn CDs in iTunes.
The problem is that all blank CDs show that they have no space on them available. If I look at the properties of a blank CD, they show 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free and 0 bytes available.
By removing the upperfilters and lowerfilters in the registry, (accoring to the Microsoft prescribed method for this problem found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060) the problem is solved for my whole sytem except for iTunes. iTunes then tells me that "the registry settings used by iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. ... Please reinstall iTunes."
I reinstall or repair iTunes and then iTunes opens fine but I can't burn with iTunes or any other program since I am back to all blank CDs showing there is no space available.
The iTunes toubleshooting Fac found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976 has been tried also and does not change the problem of blank CDs having no space available.

  • Previously burned cds now read as "blank CDs"

long story short, i bought this computer SLIGHTLY used, it basically sat around at a friend's house before. i'm barely familiar with macs and may not know all the terms.
i had this computer for quite some time and eventually the hard drive died on me, just recently got it replaced. and they installed 10.4. when i got home i installed itunes latest version and checked for all software updates. i've been able to upload normal cds, but when i try to insert several previously burned cds they show up as a blank cd and ask me what to do. or when i was finally able to burn an mp3 cd, i tried re-inserting it, and it shows up blank as well, is this some kind of software update or setting i can change, please tell me it is!
    thanks....

  • Burned CDs appear as Blank

    Hello, everyone,
Please excuse me if I repeat my question with someone else's (I did make a search though).
I've burned some CDs on my MacBook Pro 17'' about an year ago. I've played the same CDs without any problems. Long time past, I've made certain updates when the Sorftware Update indicated for such (if that's concerns this issue)...
And now, when I insert any of these previously burned CDs, they appear as Blank (any other CDs/DVDs play fine, except these ones).
    I'd appreciate any help!!!
    Kremena

The problem might be a dirty lens
I had the same problem. No burnt disk could be read (or burnt), but factory CD's could.
Cleaning the Superdrive (mac mini-intel 1st-gen) solved it for me. I used a cleaning cloth for glasses wrapped around a CD. A real CD-cleaner Disk or pressurized air might be a more recommended way of cleansing.
It might also be a too weak power supply, but that is not so likely with Macs.
Also take a look at this thread:

  • OS Lion reading old burned CDs as Blank

I am going through some burned CDs and attempting to copy them to my new iMac, but each one is being read as a Blank CD. Regular factory audio CDs seem to work fine. Any type of home burned CD is being read as blank. Any insight on how to fix this would be appreciated, thanks.

How old are these CDs?  Burned CDs can go 'bad", especially if done onto inexpensive media.  I wouldn't expect that kind of failure rate though.  Still, if the drive reads regular media it isn't the drive as such.  I guess it could be the drive doesn't like your older CDs (it isn't a case of software), but usually it happened that old drives could not read  burned CDs and not new drives not being able to read older burned CDs.
Are these audio CDs and do they play on another audio player?

  • Burning CDs issue(Leopard)

Since I've installed Leopard, I've incurred problems burning CDs. After inserting blanks, shortly there after the drive ejects them before I can even start a burning process. In other instances the drive will accept the disc, and then I'll proceed to using one of my CD burning applications (XO PRO, Itunes, Roxio). However, most of the burns never complete as I receive an error message during the process. Has anyone else received a similar problem?

I was having similar problems: The superdrive in my MBP (mid-2007, 10.5.2) was fine until recently, when it started not reading disks and completely failed to burn, giving a 'the device failed to calibrate the laser power for this media' error.
I tried the International options change mentioned in other threads, that didn't work. I tried different brands of media, no luck. I tried burning images using disk utility and using Toast, no luck. Finally, I booted into XP using Bootcamp and tried reading disks with that. It worked flawlessly. I rebooted back to OSX, and the drive now reads discs that it failed to see. It now burns media that were previously rejected.
Windows to the rescue, it seems :/
Clearly at least some of these problems are software-related, perhaps some confusion over read/write parameters in the drive that XP was able to reset.

Try updating your drives firmware. Click 'Firware Updates' on the right hand side of this page, then follow the instructions and download the update, then install. See if that helps. Its worth updating the firmware anyway :P

When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
