My motorola cable modem reset itself every 15 or 30 minutes

why does my motorola cable modem (sb6141) reset itself every 15 or 30 minutes everyday?

Start with the modem's signal stats. Perhaps they already are, or they are close to being out of spec and intermittently they go completely of spec. Try getting them here http://192.168.100.1
Please post the *Downstream Power Level*, the *Upstream Power Level*, and the *SNR* (Signal to Noise Ratio) numbers.

  • ITunes 11.x resetting itself every time its closed and relaunched

Itunes 11.x keeps resetting itself every time I close it and then later reopen. It prompts accepting the end user agreement, then upon entering, all the sync preferences are reset. Doesn't seem to effect backup of apps or music library. I'm using windows vista 64. Tried reinstalling several times removing every apple component including, all apple sub files, preference files in windows user folders, and all other apple folders, with no change upon reinstallation. Tried resetting sync history/cache in iTunes preferences, tried resetting admin rights in windows, tried enough to make this miserable. Can't find any solutions online though have found a lot of people complaining about the same issues with iTunes 11. Thought about removing 11 and installing older version though figured I'd try here first for a solution.
    Thank you for the help...

  • Can't connect to internet, Motorola cable modem seems to freeze

I have had this problem more and more fequently the past three or four weeks: I'm connected to the internet by ethernet through a motorola cable modem (SB5101). As long as the PC activity light on the modem is rapidly flashing amber things are fine. As soon as the activity light goes solid amber with no flashing I can no longer connect to the internet or send or receive mail. During one of these "freezes" when I check network status in the network pane of system preferences the light beside ethernet is yellow and the message says-"Built in ethernet is currently active. Built in ethernet has a self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet." When I check when my connection is working I get a green light and this message "Built in ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 70.44.etc. etc.(not sure if I should make the whole IP address public or not)You are connected to the internet through built in ethernet." I also notice when I check the Built in ethernet under network in sytem preferences that the IP address changes depending on whether the modem seems frozen or not. When disconnect the power to the modem and reconnect, I notice that within about two minutes the IP address changes and I can get back online again. Or at least I could. last time I did this the IP address did not change and I couldn't get back online. Now I'm using my iBook connected via ehternet, which is working fine for now (past 15 minutes). When I first plugged the iBook into the ethernet (I normally connect to the iBook through a snow airport, which I've disconnected to try to isolate this problem) I got this message(with an exclamation in a stop sign)-"IP configuration- 70.44.53.etc in use by 00:01:50:23:3e:c2 DHCP server24.229.54.226". I clicked through the box, and the iBook is still connected to the internet and working. I have contacted Motorola tech support, and it seems the modem is OK. I will contact my cable company next, but I don't have high hopes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply to my post. I was able to get back on the internet with the G4 using your suggestion, but the modem continues to freeze, whether connected to the iBook or the G4, using ethernet or airport. I will contact my ISP.

  • Trouble connecting AEBS with Cox & Motorola cable modem

I am able to set up my new AEBS however I cannot connect to internet. I am told via Airport Utility that I have set up correctly and have the steady green light and the wireless connection however it just won't pick up the Internet. I've called my ISP Cox Communications and they told me it's an issue w/my router. I noticed a similar problem in discussion boards with Comcast and followed the same instructions and it did not resolve. I've tried to power off cable modem for 10 sec, 2 min and 10 min and just no luck. I immediately plug back in my Linksys router and am able to connect to internet just fine.
    Anyone know what to do?

Power off your cable modem for at leat 10 HOURS! Cox like every other ISP "caches" the MAC address of your router. The only way to "reset" this and allow a new MAC address to be accepted, is to turn off the cable modem overnight for 8-10 hours.
Some routers have the ability to "clone" a previous router MAC address, therefore not requiring the above process, but the AEBSn does NOT have this capability.

  • Help with extending the range of Motorola cable modem

After struggling with AT&T DSL (with slow speed and intermittent drops), I switched to Time Warner Cable, and now sport blazing-fast connection via Ethernet cable into my 27" iMac. They gave me a Motorola Surfboard sbg6850 wi-fi modem, but I'm finding the range of the wi-fi to be totally inadequate... I get drops and unreliable connections only 20 feet away with iPads and Macbooks. I want a pleasing dome of wi-fi all over my house!
Through other discussions on this board, I see that Airport Express is NOT compatible with the Surfboard, a fact which surprised and disappointed me. What are my options for extending the wi-fi range?
—Could I buy a non-Apple product (router) to extend the wireless range? Can it be managed from a Mac?
—Could I connect an Airport Extreme to the Surfboard via Ethernet cable, and use the Airport Extreme as the router to extend the network via Airport Express?
—Could I use the Airport card in the ethernet-connected computer (in this case, a 27" iMac) to create a network that COULD be extended via Airport Express? (I'm using it now to share the Internet, rather than connecting directly to the Surfboard, but when the iMac sleeps, the network is unavailable.)
There's got to be a way...

Since you went with your option 2, you basically have the fundamentals for a roaming network as both routers are interconnected by Ethernet. This also means that the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) should be reconfigured as a bridge, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode) in AirPort Utility (v5.x). This would allow the TW combination cable modem / wireless router (or gateway) to provide both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network.
Now with the AEBSn configured as a bridge, you can add the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn), via a wireless connection to the AEBSn, in an extended network configuration. Note: The extended network works in a "wheel" like fashion with the extended base station at the hub of the wheel. Each extending base station would be spokes on that same wheel ... so how successful you will be extending the wireless network will be based on proper placement of each of the extending stations for full coverage. Please take a look at the following AirPort User Tip for proper placement details.
The other thing to take into account is the potential Wi-Fi interference between the TW wireless gateway and the AEBSn. Either disable the gateway's wireless radio, or be sure to allow for sufficient radio channel separation between radios on the same band.

  • Ae and motorola cable modem

    hello all!
i have a comcast motorola SB5120 cable modem, as well as an iBook g4 and a dell inspiron e1405 (xp & sp2)
i bought an ae today so that both computers could connect to the internet, the printer and the stereo (iTunes). the ibook can see the ae but cannot connect to the internet. the dell cannot connect to the ae, so the only way to connect to the internet presently is to plug the ethernet cable from the modem directly into the dell.
anyone have any ideas on how to solve this conundrum?

i let everything sit overnight. the dell can see the ae now and i was able to play iTunes through the stereo, but still no internet connection unless i plug the motorola router directly to the dell.
i called comcast and they said from their end it appears that something is blocking the modem - i assume it's the ae, but i'm not sure why that would be happening. am i supposed to have a secondary router in between the modem and the ae? (that doesn't make sense to me)
and the mac can't even play iTunes through the stereo, but one problem at a time :-/

  • Hard drive parks itself every 10 to 30 minutes

    Hi,
I just received a L750-BT4N22 Toshiba laptop. Every 10 to 30 minutes when the computer is not in use the hard drive will park itself. I have searched on the internet and some seem to think this is related to the power settings. The only thing I changed was when the computer is plugged in I have it set to "never" go to sleep. Has anyone ever heard of this and what can I do to stop the hard drive from parking itself every so many minutes?
    Thanks,
    yeto

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
I changed the settings to 360 minutes but the hard drive still (parks/or turns on and off very quickly) every ten minutes. It makes a click-click sound. It is not coming from the speakers. It is coming from the drive itself. Would you know of any power settings that Toshiba has installed that might be different versus Windows 7? Would you have any other suggestions that I  can try?
I have 4 Toshiba laptops and this is the only one with this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Iphone 4S resets itself every few min - the battery drains in an hr.

My iphone 4S is resetting every few minutes as a result the battery drains in an hour.
By resetting I  mean, the lock screen would show up, then the apple sign would come up like when you start your iphone, searches for the network etc. This happens every few minute even when the phone is on standby or when I am using it. If I am on the call, then the call gets disconnected because the phone is resetting.
The usage always shows "-" for both Usage and Standby with the message that the usage time will be shown after iphone is fully charged.
This started only a month ago when my phone was not on the latest os version. But now it is on the latest but the problem never did go away. It never fell out of my hand or fall into water and is barely a year old (just 10/15 days over the warranty period).
    Please help!

And I should mention that I took the foll steps so far:
    1. Let the battery drain out completely and charge it overnight
    2. Backed the phone, then reset the phone and restored from backup.
    3. Took it to the apple store and they did a different kind of restore but no luck
The only thing left for me to try to is to reset it to factory setting unless some one can suggest some other way.

  • New E4200 Causes Cable Modem to Continuously Reset

I just bought this router, reviews overall were very good.  I have it hooked to a Comcast Motorola Cable Modem, after three to five hours the router forces the cable modem to reset itself.  If I disconnect the router and connect direct to PC or my old linksys router the modem behaves properly.  I returned the first unit I bought to the store, at the direction of Linksys technical support, second unit I exchanged the first one for has the same issue.  Very frustrating, not sure what to do next other than return it for a refund.  I was looking forward to maximum performance.
I have reported the issue to tech support, so far they have had me do a hard reset of the routers but that did not solve the problem.  Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem or knows how I can fix it.
I sure would like some better attention from technical support, not sure if this is a firmware issue or what.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I replaced my cable modem yesterday, I had a motorola modem, Comcast gave me a Scientific American model, and low and behold I think my problem is solved!  The router worked all day yesterday, with a lot of heavy use, without forcing modem reset.  Hopefully that will do it.  Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and support!

  • Motorola SB4200E Cable modem and AEBS no Internet connection

    Hello
I've bought the new AEBS from an Apple Store in the U.S. Got back home in France thinking it's gonna be an easy ride setting up my new faster and longer range capable wireless network. After all that's what Apple says: "easy setup ... in most cases ". After ten hours trying different settings, no way to get an Internet connection !
The AEBS distributes IPs to the connected clients but cannot get an Internet address from the cable modem.
    My configuration :
Motorola cable modem (SB4200E) : configured as DHCP server
    Client computers:
iMac Core Duo connected to the AEBS via Ethernet
Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo wirelessly connected to AEBS
    MacPro
    AEBS:
    Wireless Security : WPA2 Personal
Radio mode 802.11n only (5 Ghz)
    Channel : Automatic
    No Access control
I've tried to reboot, reset, ... the cable modem without success.
Oh forgot to say that my old 54g Netgear router is able to reach my MacPro in the bedroom where the AEBS is no show ! (Twice the range ???) and took me 30 seconds to configure.
Up until now AEBS has only been dissapointment and frustration.
    Thanks for any help.

I ended up using my new AEBS in bridge mode and keep my "old" Netgear 54g for Internet connection.
Some pros though: I got a 10 MB/sec transfert rate between my wireless Macbook Pro and my wired iMac both connected to the AEBS.
Some cons: range is far from what I dreamt of (lesser range than the Netgear 54g at the same location in the room)
My HP Laserjet 1020 Printer sometimes shows up in the "Printers pane" and suddenly disappears and even when it's there, printing doesn't work !
Might come from the driver though as this printer has no official driver available for OS X (I use the 1022 driver instead)
    Welcome to Apple world !
Don't misunderstand my words here, I like Apple products very much, I got three Intel Macs at home, but being an Apple product doesn't ALWAYS go with plug and play. A few software upgrades might make this AEBS a very good product though.

  • Modem Randomly Resets Itself

Recently, I bought a Cisco DPC 3008 modem and an Engenius ESR350H router. The internet worked fine for a while, but then weird things started happening. The modem continuously reset itself for no apparent reason. We called a technician from the ISP and he reccomended that we upgrade our internet, since he believed it was resetting because we were exceeding our bandwith. Which was quite believable at the time since we only had 2mbps.
However, even after we upgraded to 15mbps the problem persists. I've checked the bandwith and we never come close to exceeding 15 mbps. Yet the modem continously resets itself. In particular when I try to fix it automatically through Windows when the internet goes down it says that "The broadband modem is having connectivity issues." and reccomends that I reset the modem. Even when there is minimal strain on the network the modem resets itself randomly, any suggestions for solutions to my problem?
    Thanks!

  • SOLVED: Dropped connections with Time Capsule and cable modem/router

I've been dealing with random dropped connections for quite a while and I thought that it would be useful to share what I've found.
I was having a very puzzling problem where my internet connection would drop randomly on wireless devices. On my laptop, webpages would suddenly become unresponsive for a minute or two, Mail would have connection problems and complain, etc...but incredibly randomly and definitely not repeatable or in any pattern that I noticed.
I also have 2 Nest thermostats in the house which connect via wi-fi. I noticed that they would randomly show Offline very often when viewed from a webpage or iPhone app, but the Nest front panels showed that they were connected with a strong signal.
As I said, the dropped connections were very sporadic. Most of the time, everything worked, but every once in a while...bam.
I worked with the level 3 tech support guys at Nest for over a week to figure out what was going on. We went through settings on my router and Time Capsule and everything seemed proper and okay. I even replaced the Nests with new ones but still had the same problem. We were all completely stumped.
Yesterday, my laptop dropped it's connection at the same time my wife's laptop dropped hers. At this point, I wondered if something was wrong with the Time Capsule or maybe my internet provider.
I called AppleCare to see if they could help with debugging the problem. They passed me up to a senior wi-fi tech and he asked me many questions about the configuration of my network. My home network looked like this yesterday (see crappy diagram below)
                                                         Motorola Cable modem/router
                                                                                 |
                                                           Netgear multiport switch
                                                          |          |         |         |          |
                                                         hardwired Macs,            TimeCapsule (bridge mode)
                                                         laser printers,                   |   |   |   |   |
                                                          Apple TVs                       laptops, Nest, iphones
This configuration seemed correct to me. The Time Capsule in bridge mode would mean that the cable modem/router would be handling DHCP so all the devices would be on the same network and I could print from a laptop to one of my printers and the laptops could connect to the hardwired Macs, etc..
The AppleCare technician said he thought that bridge mode was the problem. He mentioned that there was a known issue that in this configuration, the IP addresses could get lost between the cable modem/router and the Time Capsule. He said it would be best if the Time Capsule was in DHCP/NAT mode and the first device before the switch, this way the Time Capsule was the only device passing out IP addresses.
So I repatched my network like this:
                                                       Motorola Cable modem/router
                                                                                 |
                                                       TimeCapsule (DHCP/NAT mode)
                                                                |                                       |   |   |   |   |
Netgear multipart switch                      laptops, Nest, iphones
                                             |         |         |        |
                                               hardwired Macs,
                                                 laser printers,
                                                   Apple TVs
I can tell you that in the past 24 hours, I haven't seen anything lose a connection. Not even the Nests which seemed be on and off all the time. And, in this configuration, all the devices are on the same network and able to speak to each other.
    I hope that helps someone.

So you're saying that Bridge Mode not functioning properly is a well known issue?
Not to me.. I have not had issues with the TC in bridge. And it is my prefered setup. I think it is better as a wireless AP and network hard disk than a router any day of the week.. but there are other ways to skin the cat if it is proving unreliable. I am at the moment using a wireless bridge from the Gen4 TC to a Gen4 AE upstairs for TV internet streaming.. it started off very reliable.. but of late I guess I need to reboot it every few days. And it has required a full reset two or three times.. although I probably need to take some of the blame for those. I am not over worried.. i do not believe in wireless bridges except for the most interim of arrangements.. it will be wired in ethernet ASAP.
Wireless should always be used in a way that respects its status as voodoo.. not stable technology. NOT SCIENCE.. it is more a bag of beads and rattles.
Is there a way to change the cable modem/router to avoid the double NAT problem?
The answer to this may depend on your ISP. Did they provide the modem? If so they may lock it down so you have no control. But normally a Motorola cable modem will not have a bridge mode as such but will have a method of turning off NAT.. (and wireless).. this amounts to the same thing.
Once you turn off NAT.. you need to power cycle the modem so the TC gets the public IP in router mode. The power cycle time might be 5min or 20min or overnight.. it again depends on your ISP.. but you need to stop the modem capturing the public IP so it can be passed to the modem.
Depending on where you are in the world.. US is most concentration of cable network.. you can go out and buy your own modem. Pick one on your ISP list and steer clear of SB.. at least with the apple routers they are problematic.
It also can be a case that the cable modem is SB model and therefore more problematic. Sorry I have forgotten the recommendation for what to buy. There are a number of posts here about it but search is terrible now. (or I am too old to figure it out). I will get Bob to poke his nose in and tell you what works for him.
