  • 10.5.2 Menu Bar Transparent - CRASH

I installed 10.5.2 via Software Update. When I got into the Desktop & Screen Saver Preference Panel and click on the checkbox to turn off menu bar transparency, the Preferences application immediately crashes and I get that window asking if I want to send an error report to Apple. This happens every time, even if I restart. Obviously a bug, but my hope is that someone can post a workaround because I would love to turn off transparency without having to install a third party hack to do it. I'm using a brand new computer, only about two weeks old, and I haven't installed any weird third party applications or hacks or anything like that.

After about a half dozen crashes in a row, this time it works. I wish I could post what fixed it, but I guess it doesn't matter as long as my Preferences app is no longer crashing.
And now I have a solid menu bar back again! Much better.

  • The corner of my menu bar keeps crashing

The time in the corner of my menubar is frozen at the time at which I last restarted my Mac. When I move the mouse pointer over the time, the pointer turns into the spinning beachball. The rest of the menu bar works fine, it’s just the time part that keeps crashing. If I restart, the clock re-freezes at the time of the restart. The chime on the hour still works properly. I can open Date and Time in System Prefs, but the options I select in the Clock Options section keep getting deselected when I switch out of it.
I tried deleting the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file in my ~Library/Preferences Folder, and the com.apple.systemuiserver.000a9597ad54.plist file in my ~Library/Preferences/ByHost Folder and restarting but this didn't fix it.

    Hi Timothy,
Did you try to trash the com.apple.MenBarClock.plist
you can find it in >Home>Libray>Preferences
    Good luck ...

  • Spinning ball pops up every time and the top menu bar keeps flashing

The problem started today, for no apparent reason. I was working with some programs open (not many) when my screen froze. Nothing worked, so I closed the laptop to see if it would return to the home page (where you type the password) soon after I heard the 'apple sound'. The computer was restarted, when opened, there was a gray folder with an white question mark flashing in the center of the screen. I restarted the computer again.
From this time he began to have symptoms that persist until now:
    • Every time I do some action on any application the spinning beach ball appears and for a few seconds the program is locked.
    • The top menu bar - where the icons are located ( bluetooth, dropbox, battery, spotlight, etc.) flashes every 40 seconds.
I use this computer for work and thus can hardly surf the internet.
I hope someone can help me finding a solution to this.

  • My clock in the menu bar will not keep time.

My clock in the menu bar will not keep time.
However, if I click on it and open Date & Time and do nothing more, it adjusts to the current time but still doesn't work as the seconds aren't advancing. I close Date & Time but the clock stays highlighted/selectted, which is also strange.
Any suggestions as to how to get my clock running again?

    Hi Peter,
Not certain, but I'd try this...
You've probably got a couple of corrupt preference files.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).
    reboot

    Hi!
My icons in the menu bar keep disappering! Date and Time, Airport, Displays are gone after rebooting and clicking show in menu bar. This is getting on my nerves!
    Can you help me?
    Thanks!

My guess is the systemuiserver plist file is getting repeatedly messed up by something in the menu bar. Initially SystemUIServer had problems with a whole lot of items. The various updates have apparently slowly fixed the conflicts (I can now keep the Classic menu item in the menu bar for instance, whereas when Tiger first came out having it in the menu bar and using it, even just clicking on it, would crash SystemUIServer). However, I'm still seeing cases where the plist file doesn't get consulted at startup and my items are arranged incorrectly--for awhile this would happen about every other start, now it only happens occasionally. When it does I launch Activity Monitor and use it to Force Quit SystemUIServer. I relaunches itself automatically and all my items are then displayed correctly. I don't know whether your problem is similar, or whether some item is corrupting the plist. If it is the latter, then you need to figure out what the problem item is. Or just copy the plist file to some other folder when things are right, and then when they go wrong copy it back to the preference folder and use Activity Monitor to quit SystemUIServer and force it to consult the replaced plist when it restarts.

Hello, here's the cure on older OSes, not sure on  10.7/10.8, but...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...

Move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost>com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).

I cannot log onto the App Store, the page appears when I call it from the dock or the Apple menu and I can call the log-in box from the menu bar, but on signing in the spinning icon just keeps spinning,(not the beachball).  Using 10.6.7 and up-to-date on all software. Any suggestions?

Could be a third party app preventing you from being able to login.
Mac App Store: Sign in sheet does not appear, or does not accept typed text
If it's not a third party issue, follow the instructions here.
Quit the MAS if it's open.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left then open the Library folder then the Caches folder.
Move the com.apple.appstore and the com.apple.storeagent files from the Caches folder to the Trash
From the same Library folder open the Preferences folder.
Move these files Preferences folder to the Trash: com.apple.appstore.plist and com.apple.storeagent.plist
Same Library folder open the Cookies folder. Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch the MAS.

  • Mac Keeps Crashing - Menu Bar Disappears and Nothing Will Run

    I'm having major problems with a macbook, 2.2Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 160Gb Hard Drive, 10.5.2
I'm not sure if this is a software bug, something to do with the fact that I've recently installed 4Gb RAM, replacing 2Gb that I installed a few months ago, or possibly something with parallels desktop running Vista, I recently installed several vista updates.
Basically, there are several ways in which the computer keeps crashing - I've pretty much figured out how to make it crash now. When it crashes, the menu bar disappears, sometimes leaving the shadow beneath it and the right hand icons, sometimes not, and the dock becomes useless - nothing will run. I cant use expose etc or switch between windows. Pressing Cmd Alt Esc to open the force quit dialogue box bring up an empty box - implying that nothing whatsoever is running! I have to physically shut down the computer using by holding the power button and start it back up again. When it starts up, it sometimes continues to refuse to work until i restart it again. There is no message whatsoever about having restarted or crashed.
The computer will work fine for most processes, but the things making it crash are:
    1. Entering Time Machine (I've had to stop backing up and disconnect my time machine drive now)
    2. Using parallels desktop - I run windows vista, and it'll work fine until I launch any applications that are more complicated than just solitaire or freecell - windows messenger and powerpoint will cause the crash. OSX won't be working, but windows will continue to work fine - I can finish what Im doing and shut it down, although keyboard input no longer works. I then have to restart OSX.
    3. Running DVD Player in Front Row has now started bringing up the grey screen of death and telling me to restart.
Obviously these things can be avoided - but I can't back up my computer, I can't watch DVD's without crashing the computer, restarting and then going straight into DVD player, and I can't use the copy of Vista on Parallels that I've just spent a fair bit of money on.
I've tried taking out each of the 2Gb Kingston RAM cards, which came brand new and sealed, to see if one or other is possibly faulty, but they are both causing the same problems. I don't have the previous RAM cards to hand to test.
Has anyone here experienced anything like this before, or can anyone help me?

    Hiya Pricerob,
Your problems seem to be exactly the same as the issue I'm having when it happens. Can I ask how much RAM you have installed, and how frequently the problem occurs? I'm curious also because I'm planning on buying an imac soon, and was planning on installing the 4Gb of RAM I have into that when it arrives - the £300 apple charges for the upgrade is a little excessive.
I mentioned that I've tried to download the latest firmware update, but it keeps crashing upon completion. Have you had any issues like this?
Another really obscure thing I've found regarding the firmware update is that it saves an install file to my Applications/Utilities folder. This file would cause my mac to crash. Every time I opened the utilities folder, it would crash. I moved it to the desktop, and had major issues where the computer would crash immediately upon startup because the file was there, and the same problem once I managed to get it in the trash. It was only by accessing the macbook in target disk mode that I was able to delete the file and use my computer as normal again.
Anyway, considering the problems I've had, would anyone say it's worth risking installing the RAM into a new imac when it comes, considering that the problems with my macbook are ongoing even when the RAM is removed and I can easily reinstall the operating system on a brand new computer, or should I leave it and buy some more?

  • Keeping Firefox Icon in my Menu Bar

I use Mac OSX Tiger. I cannot keep the Firefox Icon in my Menu Bar, which means each time I turn on the computer I have to fuss with getting the icon in my menu bar. Can anyone advise?

Typically when you install Firefox you download a .dmg file (disk image file), which if you double-click, will open and show a Firefox icon. To install Firefox, you'd drag that icon to the Applications folder. Then you would close the window that opened when you double-clicked on the .dmg file.
To run Firefox you would double-click on the Firefox icon in the Applications folder, not the dmg window.
To install the Firefox icon in the "dock" (what you call the menu bar), drag the Firefox icon from the Applications folder to the dock.
(My suspicion is that instead you dragged the icon from the dmg window to the dock.)
I'd recommend that you not have Firefox running while you attempt any of the above actions.

  • Keep getting popup coupons - says that it can be deleted by clicking coupon button on menu bar but I don't see one

Recently started getting a lot of popup coupons - on the coupon it says that you can stop this by clicking on coupon button on menu bar but I do not see a coupon button on any of the menu bars. How do I delete this problem?
    Thanks

Your Firefox and plug-ins are outdated and introducing security risks to you which can be a reason for unwanted popups. Outdated software can allow malicious people on the internet to take control of your machine without you knowing. Download a new version of Firefox. Uninstall the old version, then install the new version.
After updating Firefox, to update your plug-ins, go to:
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
and find the ones to be updated, then update them.
Safe browsing requires vigilance, and this includes making sure you have programs installed on your computer to protect you online, and that they are regularly updated.
    Steps to take:
    <br /><br />
*Updating everything can be time-consuming, and if you're not sure what to do, use a program like Secunia's [https://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ Personal Software Inspector (PSI)] to help automate the process of updating all software on your computer.
*Make sure Windows Update is turned on and set to automatic.
*Always run antivirus software -- there are many free programs from vendors like Avast, AVG, TrendMicro, etc.
*Make sure your Windows firewall is on (if you are not using a replacement firewall, if so, keep that one up to date).
*Make sure your browsers are the latest versions.
Once you get everything up-to-date, then install a couple of helpful add-ons to your new Firefox installation:
    <br /><br />
*[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/ Adblock Plus] will help block unwanted advertisements.
*[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/ NoScript] will only turn on scripting (automated web-page actions) for websites that you trust.
After you've updated everything and have your new add-ons installed, you'll be safer on the web and should not be bombarded by adverts.

  • The Main Menu bar at top is hidden - how do I keep it showing?

The main menu bar at the top of Firefox 3.5 is hidden. I can bring it up using Alt-T but can't keep it showing. Does not seem to be an option in the "Options" menu under "Tools"
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Today, after I installed a Jave Runtime update

In Firefox 3.6 and later on Windows you can hide the menu bar via "View > Toolbars" or via the right click context menu on a toolbar.
Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the menu bar temporarily.
Go to "View > Toolbars" or right-click the menu bar or press Alt+V T to select which toolbars to show or hide (click on an entry to toggle the state).
