Hello guys,
After a while I figured out what was going wrong with the POP email accounts and Mail 5.
It happens that the new app is using a protocol that was not used by the mail programs as well as by ISP providers.
Now, Mail 5, is questioning the mail servers about capability (CAPA instruction) and most of the servers answer as IMAP by default, even tho they are POP servers.
So when Mail 5 receives this answer, it does not establish the connection and so POP accounts don't work.
My ISP came out with a non conventional solution while they work on the server configuration.
The solution is deleting the POP accounts and recreating them, indicating they are IMAP accounts, but configuring them manually as POP.
To be clear, when recreating the account, the programs asks for the type of account. There you put IMAP.
Further, when it cames to configure the account, you do it manually, configuring the POP and SMTP servers as if they were POP accounts.
What this does is deceive Mail 5 which is specting an IMAP answer, but after that the account works as POP.
It worked for me and my ISP (Fibertel).

My POP mail account has stopped working

Hi,
I have a mail account with PlusNet. For years it's worked fine, but a week ago I stopped receiving emails on my POP account (my other iCloud account is fine) and got an exclamation mark/triangle icon next to the account name. The connection doctor tells me that trying to log in to the POP account failed and suggested I check that the username and password are correct. I did and both are okay.
I checked back with PlusNet, my ISP, and they said that a recent Mac OS update had upset things. They suggested I go into Mail Preferences - Advanced and untick 'Use SSL' and untick 'Automatically detect and maintain account settings'. I did this but still no luck.
PlusNet then said to contact Apple.
Has anyone else had similar problems? To clarify, I can't receive new mail on my POP account, but do be able to send okay.

I have exactly the same problem. I'm also with Plusnet, Mail always worked fine until maybe a week or so ago. I'd upgraded to 10.10.1 earlier in the year and had some problems with Mac freezing or shutting down at random, which seemed to have eventually sorted itself out somehow, eventually, but never had any problems with Mail.
Problem is exactly the same as you state, have just tried what you said Plusnet suggested and no luck for me either.
Have now also done the most recent upgrade to 10.10.2 but Mail still doesn't work properly.
I have 4 Mailboxes for different addresses, the three affected ones are all (incoming)mail.plus.net (outgoing)relay.plus.net the only one unaffected is (incoming)pop.secureserver.net (outgoing)smtpout.secureserver.net
Some emails have not been sent or sent without attachments and v.v.slow to get incoming emails. I have to check on webmail to make sure I get the incoming emails but it doesn't show the sent messages from Mac Mail.
Hope this info helps in some way, do post if you find a solution/cause.

Secondary e-mail account doesn't work

I noticed today that my Secondary e-mail account wasn't working. My mobile Me account works. The other account has lost its draft, send, trash icons. When you try to check mail on that account the phone reverts to the home screen. I have synced, restored, deleted the secondary account and created a new one. The messages can be received/sent but not viewed. That account on my mac works great. During the restore process it notifies me that there is a file missing but doesn't say which one.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Create your MobileMe account on your iPhone and turn Contacts and Calendars on for over the air syncing with your MobileMe account settings on your iPhone. If you have a MobileMe account and are syncing contacts and calendar events over the air with your MM account on your iPhone, you don't need to sync contacts and calendar events direct with the Address Book and iCal on your Mac via the iTunes sync process.
Try syncing iTunes content including the music, video, podcasts, and 3rd party apps you want transferred/installed on your iPhone, but don't select anything under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences.
If no problems with this, try selecting the single iPhoto album you want transferred to your iPhone under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences. If the same error message is provided, this narrows it down to transferring photos only which means there is a problem with what is called the iPod Photo Cache, which can be deleted from iPhoto.

Mail account won't work in Lion

Two things I need assistance on please. First item: I just upgraded to Lion and am having problems with one of my pop mail accounts downloading to Apple Mail. I have double checked all of the server settings and they are correct. I even tried to download in Outlook for Mac with the same settings and it worked fine. Is there something different in Lion that requires some different settings to download mail from an SSL service?
Second item: In a stroke of stupidity I decided to delete the mail account and re enter it just to see if that would fix the problem. It didn't fix the problem but it did delete all of my stored messages. Any ideas for how I can recover them back into mail? (Fortunately this is a secondary computer that I did this on and my primary mail storage in on my office computer otherwise I'd be hyperventilating about now.)
Any resolutions, ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know if this adds anything useful to Apple's Vista disastercalled Lion. I have now spent a couple of weeks of precious time andafter losing so many of the apps I need every day and downloading themand relicensing them I found that nothing, absolutely nothing, from anyfixit type web site or from Apple would fix Mail.
Now this is the cruncher - I just opened up my copyof PostBox and asked it, for a lark, to open the mailboxes and messagesin Lion Mail and it did the whole job perfectly in a matter of minutes.
So Apple - look at what PostBox is doing and just usetheir approach - and for God's sake kill the **** permissions you haveused in this Iron Lion security update - it really really stinks. Areyou guys at Apple prepared to pay for my time and loss of income tryingto rework this disaster.
Lion is not ready for release even though it is at 10.7.2.
Please,please, offer a backgrade download process that will let us go back tothe humming and nearly perfect Snow Leopard on our pre-2011 macs - andREFUND the cost of this crap premature OS.
You do realise that intimidation of this nature - not letting a user backgrade is a formn of bullying.

Migrated Mail Account doesn't work

Last week I used Migration Assistant to move everything from a 10.5 MBPro to a shiny new 10.6 MBPro. Just about everything is working except one of my email accounts. In its previous incarnation it successfully connected to an Exchange server using POP over SSL. Now it doesn't work. Nothing has changed at the server end - I can still use the same settings to access it from a Windows machine.
Mail doesn't report any errors, so I watched the conversation with Wireshark. The Mac side closes the connection after sending a TLSv1 encryption alert, code 21, which is an encryption error. When I look at the X.509 cert sent by the server, it has, according to Wireshark, the "not before" field set to Aug 6th 2011, and the "not after" field set to Aug 8th 2010. Would this be enough to produce encryption errors? Is the encryption mechanism more sensitive on Snow Leopard than on Leopard?

Update - I was misinterpreting the certificate dates. The "not before" is in fact 11/08/2006, and the "not after" is 10/08/2008, so it is not a date conflict issue, just a completely out-of-date issue (that's August, not October, for those that read their dates differently).
I ran Thunderbird, and it pops a dialog box to ask if it is OK to use the expired cert, and will then successfully retrieve Mail from the server.

One of my iPad Mail accounts doesn't work

I recently changed the password on one of my Apple accounts, and update the settings for my iMac, MacBook Pro, and iPod Touch - with no incident.
However, my iPad Mini's Mail account is acting up for some reason. I can access email from two other iPad Mini accounts - but for some reason, the accout I'd changed the password on isn't accessing email. I changed the passwords manually; no effect. I deleted the account, and manually entered the new settings; no effect. I know the settings are correct, because they work on my other devices; it's just when I'm using the one changed account on my iPad Mini.
Is there something I'm missing?

Hmmm...I think I may have figured this out. I'd unintentionally set my desktop Mail folder to make Spam/Trash on the desktop rather than Trash. The iPad Mini was so overloaded with Trash mail that it sent an error message; only by putting the Spam in the Trash that the iPad Mini's Mail delivery returned to normal.
I'm responding to my own question because apparently nobody else has successfully answered this question yet.

Exchange mail account doesn't work anymore in MBP

I am new to Apple products. I purchased my MBP 13" in Aug 2013. Since then I have been facing issues with Mail app in my MBP.
I use Exchange account from my office (Exchange server 2003) and I got the settings from my administrator. I tried installing those settings in my Windows PC and Android Phone, and they all work with no problems. But, with the same settings, it never works in my MBP. Then he gave me IMAP settings for the same account. These do not work too. They worked once for a while (one month roughly) and then I received an OS X update 10.9.2 on 5th of March 2014 and then it stopped working in MBP again. I tried removing the account and added newly, but doesnt work. I tried changing the port numbers, SSL, so on but to no solution. I even contacted the online chat support and telephone support for hours but no one could fix it.
When I go to my administrator, he says it works in all our computers, and its not functioning in your MBP, so he goes raging me to contact apple as he sees no issues from him side. I kindly request someone to help me solve this issue please.

Synchronisation ical with other accounts doesn't work with lion

Since i have upgraded my system from Snow Leopard to Lion, so i could go on with my mobile me account. After 7 years with no problems and paying each year a contribution of € 80,- for mobile me I must change to Lion to stap over before 30 june to iCloud. Therefore I was forced to pay € 30,- to step to Lion. I'l regret these steps I have taken, because now I Can't use my HP Laserjet P6 printer anymore. My extern network diskdrive is not reachable anymore, and my synchronisation with agenda's as Googel en Exchange from my work is also not working since I made my upgrade.

Messages are sent via SMTP. Both, POP and IMAP are protocols to receive mail.
In any case, it would be '''their''' 'outdated POP mail server', not yours.

I seem to have multiple problems related or unrelated. I cannot use Apple Mail for blueyonder and mostly for gmail as both show that the server is off line. My pop up blocker doesn't work and I am blitzed with pop up windows on nearly every command

Firstly I am unable to use Apple mail except for hotmail, for blueyonder, gmail or Sky as the server shows as (off line) and I have no idea how to get them on line even though I tell them to go there.
My pop up blocker doesn't work and I am blitzed with advertising windows virtually on ever command I make, one seems to be impossible to unsubscribe from.
When I am in an email with a web link the web link doesn't work and I get a window saying that I must have a pop up blocker, but if I switch it off it is no different, what does work is switching the "enable Java script off", then when I get to the web site I can't use it until I switch the java script back on.
I can't do a screen shot either full or partial, when I try it changes the web site that is on screen to another.
So what have I done that might have caused problems, downloading Yosemite seemed to be the start of the problems. Since then I have started to install Mackeeper, after checking with a family members who should know, that MacPaw is safe. I decided that I didn't want to pay the subscription, so went through the uninstall instructions but it comes up as a pop up with considerable regularity.
My stress levels have gone through the roof with pop ups happening so regularly and not being able to use Apple mail.o can anyone help please?

Account doesn't work on Mac Mail but does on iPhone

I have a IMAP email account with my company that works on my iPhone and in Entourage but doesn't work in Mac Mail. I have tried to copy the settings and even did a full erase and reinstall of Leopard and no one has an idea why it won't work, the hosting company or Pro Care. Any idea out there?

Using a POP mail account in mac mail

My friend has an AT&T sbcglobal POP mail account he has added to his mac mail app. Since it is POP mail it is not always received in his mac mail box if AT&T Yahoo account receives it first. I guess he can prevent the Yahoo mail box from downloading the messages if he signs out of the Yahoo account.But he also has an iPhone. So will he still have the race problem between the computer & the iPhone on which gets the mail first?
Appreciate any suggestions on how this can be solved?

I assume the settings you are refering to gives that delay for marking the messages as read when highlighted for that period of time. Probably for scrolling through the list without changing the unread status. Lion doesn't have that selection, so I can't test that at the moment.

Could someone PLEASE tell me how to set up more than one POP mail account.

I am soooo frustrated. Before I upgraded to Tiger I had no problems setting up my mail accounts. Now, I can only set up one POP mail account. I have three mail accounts that I desperately need to set up from the same ISP server, all POP accounts. On Panther and earlier, all I had to do was add the accounts. Now I have ONE POP account and when I try to set up another I get an error message that I already have a POP account set up. Why is this happening and what happened to the old system that worked just fine. I am so annoyed with this. It simply defies logic!!!!

I don't know if this will work or not, but why don't you try using bogus pop and/or smtp server information when you initially establish the accounts with Mail's setup wizard? Just continue through the "warning: cannot validate server" messages that the wizard will give you. Then go into Mail > preferences > accounts and highlight each of the new accounts, one at a time, and try changing the incoming pop and outgoing smtp mail server information to what it is supposed to be?
For the "Outgoing" server just use the pull-down menu, to select it, and when all accounts are done, go into that same pull-down menu and choose "Edit Server List..." to remove the bogus smtp server information.
Incoming should be just renaming that pop server in the "Incoming server" field.
If that doesn't work, I've got something riskier you could try, again with no guarantees, and that is editing your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file using either the Property List Editor that comes with XCode Tools (will launch automagically when you click on that .plist file if XCode is installed) or with the pico editor in Terminal, and possibly renaming some folders in your ~/Library/Mail folder, too. Again, start with the bogus server info, then find those entries in the .plist file and make changes there.
Note: if not familiar with the notation, "~" means your "home" directory.

Why dosignatures in my POP mail account continue to disappear?

Signatures disppear in my POP account. They show up in "All Signatures" but are not usable when sending an email.
I reenter the signatures in my POP account, and they are usable for a while, but suddenly, when I click on Signature in an email to send, signatures do not appear. Then I have to go back and reenter them again.
