My SRW2048 needs to be exercised.

I manage a network that consists of three buildings with fiber running between each building. In the main building, I have a hub with 3 Linksys SRW2048 48-port switches and a secondary hub with 2 SRW2048's. The other two buildings each have one SRW2048. All four hubs have been connected with fiber using the Linksys MiniGBIC transceiver (Model N:MGBSX1). For the most part, everything has worked out well.
However, my backup SRW2048 seems possessed. I can turn it on and things run ok, but if I have to reset it, it goes crazy. For testing purposes, I just have one CAT 6 line running into it from another SRW2048. If I reset it (either unplugging the device or by logging into the device), ports 13-24 and 37-48 will all turn on and then randomly turn off/on (again with no lines plugged into them). Ports 1-12 and 25-36 'seem' to work fine as far as light display is concerned. However, when it is in this condition, I can not ping the switch with my one CAT6 line plugged into one of the seemingly good ports. If I keep the switch turned off for about 10min and then plug it back in, it seems to function ok.
If this is just a small bug that is remedied by simply waiting 10min before I turn things back on, I can probably live with that. However, if this could lead to bigger problems, then I would like to have a solution to fixing this issue. It's odd, though that none of the other routers seem to have this issue and are able to reset almost immediately.
The only configuration changes I have made from the factory settings are to set up a user/pass and changed the IP settings for our network.
This problem occurred as I was trying to connect a fiber line from one of our routers to our fiber switch and then to this backup router. I was unable to get a connection between the two and was troubleshooting that problem when I decided to reset both switches. That's when I first noticed the problem with the backup switch. However, I ruled the fiber out as a potention issue because I was never able to get that connection between the two switches.
I was wondering if anyone had had heard of this problem or if anyone had any ideas as to why this would be happening.

Bought the same SRW2048 thinking it should be a good upgrade for the unmanaged 10/100 switch, but within the first two weeks, I need RMA. Then the new switch is starting to have similar problem. Some are trying to blame some network packets causing the switch to reboot. I have a pretty simple default configuration (plug it in, assign IP and plug in workstations!)
Here's my laundry list:
- Time is off, never come back to the right one and SNTP never really works. When the switch reboots, I get back to the 00/00/00 and it's a pain to the time right.
- I see ports going online and offline and lots of them. I know there are nobody at the office, so it has got to be the switch.
We do not have any complex network set up, just one SRW2048 to a ~30 node s network. One one side is the clients and on the upside is a pix firewall.
It's so hard to setup each time the switch reboots, the whole office scramble and lost work.
If you guys have an answer to why ports go offline/online, etc... or why the switch does a cold start, please share.

Ipod Nano - Stuck in limbo, or gone for good?

A long, long time ago, in a time when the nano was first released, I bought one... Unfortunately, it quickly became useless as my music library expanded. So, I upgraded to an 80GB Video. Anywho, I decided to keep my nano, but since I wouldn't be using it, I put it in a box and put it away.
Recently, I dug up the old nano, just for kicks. Figured I'd attempt to power it on as a joke, was sure the battery would be dead. Didn't turn on. No big deal, I thought, it had been sitting for awhile. So, I plugged it in to my Mac mini. I didn't get any response on the mini to indicate that the nano was even hooked up, but I figured it was just cause the battery was so drained that it needed to charge up for a bit. So, I left it plugged in over night.
The next morning, I woke up, checked on the nano, still nothing. Tried the "Reset" method amongst several other techniques to get the nano working, and still nothing.
To sum up, I get absolutely 0 response from this nano. Nothing on the iPod when it's plugged in, nothing on the computer when it's plugged in, and the screen just stays in "off" mode. I've tried the standard things (Different computer, different USB port, etc.) but since my Video works fine on this set up, it really shouldn't be an issue.
So, can anyone tell me, what's up with my iPod? Is it dead? Or just really really asleep?

The battery is probably dead and needs replacing. You can't leave an iPod battery for a long time without regular charging (even if not in use). The battery needs to be "exercised".
Lithium-ion batteries ( like the one in the iPod) need to be used. If you don’t use your iPod at all, it's recommended to complete a charge cycle at least once a month in order to keep it in working condition.

Internal hard drive does not mount in disk utility

My internal hard drive no longer mounts in Disk Utility. It is grayed out. I have extraordinarily frequent spinning beach ball/freezes, in Safari or Apple Mail. The most recent symptom: upon rebooting or just starting up, I see flashing black on the display. This has been occuring for more than six months. Of course, I have made total and frequent backup's. I bought new RAM, but have not yet installed it, and I susect this might help. I have done repeted troubleshooting many times each: Apple's Disk Doctor, Repaired Permissions, Reinstalled the Mac OS, safe boot, Alsoft's Disk Warrior, Apple's longer Harware Test, etc. I have worked as a new user, too. All tests done report that all is well. What od you thnk the problem is? Must I drive 1.5 hrs. each way to the Genius Bar at my nearest Apple Store? Might I try to erase the hard drive as a fix? I hate to do this, only as a last resort, as it is so time-consuming. Should I just update my Mac OS? Please advise, out there, if anyone can offer any advice, I would be greatly appreciative.

The list of issues you posted probably would not get shorter if you attempt to 'upgrade them' away, as usually that kind of effort is not effective yet may expose more of the same problems while not necessarily revealing the original weakness. Another OS X installed over a set of problems seldom helps.
How full is the hard disk drive? If it is too full, or has been very busy in use several years, it may be time to replace the HDD and perhaps put a larger capacity one in the computer. And if the main computer hardware checks out OK (tested under a variety of duration and stress tests) then also consider a RAM upgrade if the device is not already at the maximum capacity.
When was the last time the hard disk drive was devoid of content, maybe wiped -- erased and reformatted by a third party disk utility or have a utility overwrite the entire HDD with zeros? This used to be a common tech service in the course of a major effort to restore a Mac. Or Defragment?
If you can do the latter, this could help resolve bad sectors and remove old data or corruption on the hard drive. Or get a new HDD and before committing a new OS X install & apps to it (or a re-clone of a complete backup) test the drive and be sure it is ready for use. Not all new drives are perfectly ready; some need to get exercise first.
I'd bet on a new hard disk drive of larger capacity (also note spin RPM rate and data speeds) and a full RAM upgrade.
If you have a backup clone on an external hard disk drive (in a boot-capable enclosure) you could really go to town and before you erase the main/only hard drive, make a backup clone and test its ability to boot the Mac. Or put the old drive and content in a suitable boot capable enclosure of the kind with its own power supply, and deal with it later.
Then consider a later version OS X -- whatever most recent version that model can support... {edited}

Updated apps break links with dock icons (Mac OS)

When apps are updated via the CC desktop app, they sometimes (not always) come down with a new name which causes the link in the dock to break.
This would be a nuisance with one or two apps, but when a CC user has (like I do) a dozen icons in their dock it means that every major update requires several broken dock icons to be replaced. And if (like me) the user has more than one login on their machine (for separate personal and business workspaces) then the nuisance is doubled.
For example, I have just downloaded "Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014.1", which has removed the earlier version leaving an orphaned dock icon ("Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014"), for the sake of adding ".1" to the file name.
As a general principle, version numbers do not belong in an application name; there is a perfectly good field in the file info window for version number which is where practically every other vendor puts theirs.
This comes on top of the muddle of versions which has meant there are three "current" versions of some apps, for instance Photoshop (CS6, CC and CC 2014).
The other problem with your system is that in a few short months "CC 2014" apps will be outdated, if not in practise, certainly in name.
Some creative brains need to be exercised on this, don’t leave it to the nerds.

If it happens in a new user you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

Document with various reviews / approvals

Dear Friends,
In our document cycle it will be routed through many reviews and approvals. May be in each review and approval stage users will put their comments / edit the document.
We have following statuses:
Create --In prgoress- review 1 --- review 2 --- review 3 -
approval 1 -- approval 2 --- approval 3 --completed
I am having following options:
1. Each reviewr / approval can down load the document (if it editable like word / excel etc) , after editing attach it as another attachment. In this case we will have two documents original and edited one in same version of the document.
He change the version and attached the edited document & delete the original document. In this case old version document with original document need to be completed / rejected / locked. This will be extra work for them. More over in this case there may be more versions & to identify who did what changes is difficult. We need to open each document & find out.
2. If the document is like PDF he can enter his comments on separate layer. Each reviewer / approver can enter his own layers & enter their comments etc.
Then some one need to be comiled all these editings / layers and make new version of the document and also complete / reject / locked the old version document.
3. Try to do outside the SAP the editing & upload the final version of the document.
4. Can we consider Content version ? In this case can we get statuses also. Can we name each version ?
I want to understand in my scenario which is better approach consideringthe following points:
a. I want to see the older / new version of changes. Want to know who proposed what changes / comments .
b. what is original document & sub srquent documents.

In this case creator / originator need to compile all layers and submit new document. Shall he need to create new version for this ? or shall add new original attachment in same DIR. At what stage this needs to be done ?
New status can be :
Create - R1- R2- R3- Change updated- A1-A2- A3-Completed
I think after R1, R2, R3 he will submit new document for approval. Then after A1, A2, A3 he will upload another document which is final. Shall we need to create new cersion, other wise there is no record. If we make new version old version DIR status need to be changed to completed / rejected / locked to complete the cycle. Same time for new version DIR status to be Change updated (new status) so that it can go to A1. For each document he needs to this exercise means long process.
Am I right ?

Using MBPr mainly as desktop. Problems/hassle factor?

Trying to get an informed answer on this. A lot of conflicting discussion online – surprise!
I need to replace an old PC desktop. Am considering an iMac or a Macbook Pro Retina. The MBP would mostly sit on the desktop hooked up to an existing monitor I own, but it would have the advantage of portability if needed.
I understand you can run the MBP in “clamshell” mode so that even when closed it stays on, using AC power, and only the external monitor is used. There are even third-party stands made just for this purpose.
All good. But some say this mode can be harmful to the battery… that it’s not a good idea to run a MBP continuously under AC power even after battery is fully charged.
Any truth to that? Trying to assess how much of a hassle it would be to set up the MBP for mostly desktop use – ie, would I need to unhook and run down the battery every few days to avoid the above, etc., in which case I would lean toward the iMac. Informed advice appreciated/ Thanks!

let the battery drain to about 20%, then recharge it back to 100% every 2-4 times a month and you should be ok. You can do it more frequently, but not less as the battery needs to be exercised.

Apple says the the batteries are non user replaceable, but that is incorrect-you can remove it and replace it yourself. I would only recommend you remove it when you need a new battery. If you remove the battery and just run it on AC it will only run at about half speed.

Tappable links in goodreader for iPad?

How do I create internal hyperlinks in goodreader for iPad? For example, I would like to link a chapter to its corresponding exercises and answer key located at the end of the textbook (PDF). The table of contents feature does not meet the needs of linking exercises to the corresponding answer key.
I would also like to create links to mp3 files that are located in the same folder as the PDF textbook.
i believe that goodreader has feature that supports tappable links / PDF links in their iPhone app but I have not identified a means to make hyperlinks between pages of a PDF or make links from a PDF to mp3 files

Upgrade CS3 TO CS4 - Serial Number Not Recognised - HELP!

From what I have been reading, there seems to ba a few people who are having problems upgrading to CS4 from CS3. Well, I'm afraid I'm another to add to the list. Can anyone help me in my plight?
My O.S is Windows XP Pro (SP3) and my computer has more than enough nuts and bolts inside it to run NASA never mind CS4! My anti virus is AVG 8.5 and my firewall is Zone Alarm, both of which were disabled during the attempted install.
I purchased the upgrade from the Adobe store (at £165) and had the box delivered - great so-far!
However, when I came to install the upgrade, and after putting in the correct CS4 serial, a window opened to inform me that the system-profile search, failed to find the CS3 in the defaul location - and believe me it's there! I followed the on-screen instructions, typing-in the serial number of my (leagally-bought) CS3; to my horror, it told me that the serial number was 'not a valid copy' when it clearly is!!
I have successfully installed the CS4 Upgrade only on a 30 day trial basis but still cannot register as it then tells me that BOTH my serial numbers are invalid. Suffice to say that the 30 day trial version was later uninstalled and I am now back to square-one and £165 poorer!
I have opened a case with Adobe but after over a week have still had no reply. Phoning customer support in the UK was also a no-no as their office hours (9-5 Mon to Fri) are not compatible with me as I cannot be next to my machine during these times (Unless I take a day off!) My next option is to phone the States but hey - it's only money!!
My question is therefore - can anyone help or make suggestions as to how I can resolve this issue. A point to note that after buying and installing CS3 I notice in the headline (once the programme is running) it is labelled 'CS3 EXTENDED' yet this is not written on the box - is this normal? The CS4 Upgrade was the same so it looks like I am trying to install a like-for-like product.

What's the point though of issuing upgrades that don't upgrade?
Well, once it was pretty easy. There was only one full-version of PS. Back then, there were variations with terms like "Lite," and "LE," and these were basically bundled with scanners, etc. They were the precursors to PSElements. For a bit, there were only two PS and PSE. The "upgrade" was either the full-version upgraded to the next version, or the full-version from PSE. Then "Extended" was introduced, and now there are two full-versions. Each will have their own upgrade path, so some care needs to be exercised. Extended basically offers more video capabilities over the "regular."
Upgrade paths have also changed, and can come into play, when one uses a stand-alone to upgrade to a "suite." Once, one could upgrade separate programs directly, but with suites, things get a tad more complicated. Though I've had straight PS versions since 2.5, once I went to the Production Stuido suite with PrPro, AE and Audition, I could no longer use my PS license to JUST upgrade PS to PS-Extended. I would have to do the full suite, and now there are several flavors of the Video suites, with one including upgrades for all of my old Macromedia Studio suite. I follow this stuff fairly closely, and have to admit that I am confused, and the Adobe site (good in many other ways) does not cover the various suites and how to get to each from where one is, as well as it could. However, a chart of all possibilities and what is in each suite might fill four screens.
Then, you have to factor in that many resellers do not furnish all the necessary info on what is needed to qualify for specific upgrades. Once, when there were fewer resellers, one had to give the S/N for their existing product, and then this was matched up to the requirements of the upgrade. Now, there are just too many resellers to do that - or Adobe has become a bit more, um-m, "relaxed."
Over the decades, I have found Adobe Customer Support (not necessarily Technical Support) to be quite good and accommodating, when I did have any problem. In the past, they did all that they could to keep me satisfied, and did a good job of it.

Solving exercises in HCM is not really applicable, since the requirements on every client is diff.
What I will suggest you is that, you start reading SAP Help simultaneously, where you can create your own scenarios at basic level.
once you become confident then, there is no need to solve exercises
or else if you can find ant book, available in market you can go through them.

Forstmann, although you could possibly start with Tom Kyte's book (you can read my review of that book on Amazon) and then come back to the Oracle Concepts Guide. Definitely, read and understand Tom Kyte's book before moving on to anything else. I also recommend the "Troubleshooting Oracle Performance" book (in my opiinion it is much better organized and well-rounded than the other performance tuning books that I have read... you can read my review on Amazon). Once you have a good understanding of Oracle SQL, you might also take a look at the "Pro Oracle SQL" book.
For backup and recovery, I found that (at least for the 10g version), Robert Freeman's book is very good for theory, however if something does not go as described in the book, you can be left digging through Google searches to determine how to progress. It also seemed that some of the information needed for the exercises was difficult to locate in the rest of the book. The "RMAN Recipes for Oracle Database 11g" is set up quite a bit differently from Robert Freeman's book. There are typically a couple of pages of theory at the start of each chapter, and then several practice exercises. If nothing else, the recipe format provides an insight into how RMAN works and what to do when it does not work. I found a handful of errors in the RMAN Recipes book, but the material seems to be very well organized, making it easy to progress through the book while testing/reproducing the various recipes. (I reviewed both of these books on Amazon also.)

Itunes Store (BPM)

I'm curious if anyone knows how to find the BPM (Beats Per Minute) of a song on itunes before I purchase a song or album.
I need to find exercise music with a certain BPM and couldn't find it posted anywhere on an album.

The iTunes Store doesn't provide that information. There are some albums, though that contain music specifically for exercise that list the BPM. The ones I can remember are by Self, the magazine.
Depemding on what you want, you might also look at the PODRUNNER podcast. It's intended for running but some of the mixes might work for you. Each podcast is a specific BPM.

"You are running on reserve power" error message

I am suddenly getting the error message "You are now running on reserve battery power" every time my PowerBook is unplugged, even with as much as 45% of the battery left. There is an article about this on the tech support web site, but it says it applies to system 10.2 (I am running 10.4.11) and it says it usually happens when wakening from an extended period of sleep, but for me it is happening every time I unplug the computer, even if it has been awake for a long period. At any rate, the article's suggested solution is to upgrade to 10.4, which is of no help to me. What could be causing this? I have been using this PowerBook since 10/05.

Make sure the battery is charged all the way, unplug the power adapter, and let it run until it shuts down. Lithium batteries need to be exercised like this periodically to maximize the ability to hold a charge. When you get a new battery, you may need to do this around 2-3 times in a row to get it to it's maximum capacity.

Y axis Time chart

Hi group, I am new to Numbers and wondering whether it can do what I want (and how to do it!). I've never worked with charts before...
Basically, I want to create a chart with Addresses on the X Axis and Years on Y Axis.
I want to be able to say that Address 1 is valid from between 2010 and 2012. Address valid between 2011 and 2013 and so on.
I want it to appear like the attached (replace company names with addresses)
Help I have no idea and have trying for days!!!

Hi Mark,
The first thing to know about Charts in Numbers is that there are two basic kinds, and some sub-varieties. The two basic kinds are Scatter and Category.
Scatter Charts plot data pairs where both halves of each pair in the set are numeric values. All the rest of the charts are one form or another of a Category Chart.
What you need for this exercise is a Stacked Bar Chart, and the data table to drive it to the behavior you are looking for.
Here's an example of a Stacked Bar Chart from the Net Worth template in the template chooser.
Using this clip as an example, Large and fixed assets in the template will be your delay, in years, before the company becomes active. Liquid assets becomes the company's active time. You don't need the third segment (series) but you see how you could add segments if needed.
To make this chart look like yours, you would Display Category Names on the left axis (The Category Axis) and Years on the bottom axis (the Value Axis). Also, adjust the color of the delay value to white or clear.
