My story so far, TROUBLES

Hi!
I know there are a lot of complaints about the MBP in this forum, and unfurtunatly this will add to it somewhat, but most of all i am disapointed with the service of Apple's Techincal Support.
So i have a MBP 1.83 gHZ week 12. It has always been unbarably warm, it has the whine, and it has a whining noise through external speakers when connected to a S-video through DVI.
I called Apple Support the first time and i was told that my only options was to take the computer to an Apple service center, so i took it in, had to take the bus for one hour. When i got there the guy was friendly and took the computer in for repair, he could not promise me that the whine would go away but it would become less apparent, said it would become 3db quieter. When i got the computer back it think that the case was uneven in places and the whine was still there, it still had excessive heat and the whining noise through the speakers where still present when connected to a S-Video through a DVI. (there is nothing wrong with the TV or the Speakers as they worked perfectly fine with my PowerBook G4)
I then decided to call apple again a couples of week later, and i was instructed to go to my nearest service center (1 hour by bus away) i told them this was not convinient and i was told that the only thing i could do was to buy an Apple Care Protection Plan, then the computer would be picked up and delivired again. So i decided to do nothing.
Then a week ago the right fan started to make a ratteling sound, quite loud when spinning slowly and fading away as the fan spins up and then becomming louder as the fan reaches higher speeds. I again called apple care and explained two problems Whining noise through external speakers and the rattiling sound. I was told that as i could not hear a whine through the speakers of the MPB there was something wrong with the speakers and they could not do anything. He then put me on hold and told me that there was an investigation into the high pitch sound from the right hand side, i told him it was a low pitch rattiling sound, he then went away and said it would go for investigation and i would here from apple when they figured it out. I then asked as i am leaving the country for 4 months that if, they figured it out, i would be able to get my computer fixed abroad, i was told no, it was a limited warranty and could only get it fixed in the UK. And yet again.. if you purchase an Apple Care Protection Plan it would become world wide. I yet again thanked politely and hung up. Went to read my warranty and it says 1 year World Wide warranty ?!?!
As for the rattiling sound, i would think change the fan, there must apparently be something wrong with it. But perhaps not? Should i expect to hear from them again?
And is one expected to buy an extended protection plan for a unit that has never worked?
Any toughts?
Finally playing WoW on the machine for hours = very sweaty palms !!

Good, but, they could have done more.

This is good news since you decided to move on to Sno.

Unfortunate. Did you make any preparation for moving to Sno such as making a bootable clone on you Leo install on an external drive?
For now, I would try [resetting your SMC|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411]. Then, not everything or nothing probably will be fixed. You, then, in all likelihood will need to [reset your PRAM and NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US].
Right now, at this point, I just feel like giving up the Mac switchover and >moving back to Windows.
There is no reason to take such drastic action yet. You'd be better off to work with Sno and install some Version of Windows on your machine using Boot Camp.

  • FCserver .... the story so far in the Profession arena

well thought I would spread the love and tell you my story so far...
    The Kit
    10 x 8 core MacPros - 8 Gig Ram - 4 GB Fibre network - 40TB storage.
    The Brief
We have a collective library of "mood elements" kind of like Getty (by the way are the best footage library we have used)
We also have over 6TB of indexed HDV files for a major travel company.
With over 25,000 Mood tapes and over 10,000 HDV files I decided that we were ready for the onslaught of FCserver, I set up all the macpros and decommissioned a Dual 2 - 4GB ram PPC, installed 105 server on this old dear (this also has fibre but only 2GB/s card and spf)
Before completely blowing my head off I decided to 'slightly wound myself' by installing it on a MacBook Pro to navigate around the Lookup menus, metadata fields etc - by the way this was the best thing to do, as I would travel back on the train at night it would allow me to log on (yes you need a IP address and internet for it to work)
Helpful hint 1 - get a sharpened HB pencil and writing pad - write down in columns, Look Ups and their metadata ie "My Edit Suites" then Edit 1, Edit 2 etc - write as much information as you can
The create a new field called My Edit Suites, this field will allow you to allocate the correct look up.
Helpful Hint 2 - DECIDE YOUR WORKFLOW !!!!! Man alive this is the so important, if you have a SAN (like us) I created a Folder called FinalCutServer, in there is where everything will go, in here create "watch folders" these can be anything ----- we have about 10 folders each to a part of our business, ie MoodTapeFootage, XXXXXtravelFootage etc. coinsiding
Install !!! - point your Proxie and media folder set up to the FinalCutServer folder - there it will create Library, Media, Watcher & Bundle plugins ! for the love of god don't mess with these bad boys
So off I went installed, set up metadata info Created new sub folders in the library folders that matched the watch folders, this will make it easier to media manage later, I created watch folder alerts that would transcode the files then move them to the subfolder - happy days.
Opened the java app and in admin settings set the compressor cluster to the FinalCutServer Cluster Pig ( this is the cluster I set up by starting ll the edit machines and allocating 2 services per machine, in theory I should have 20 processors available to me.
Set off with just a few jobs - WOWZER - super quick and done, buy the way the Jobs window takes me back to Telestream FlipFactory - so I am excitied all proxies are working and away we go ....... Do I drag the 24,995 over ! **** no
When I drag 100 jobs over it pumps away - at this stage I am relising a Dual 2 PPC is just not cutting the mustard, in activity window everything is pushed to the roof,
I am constantly force quitting the Compressor service via activity window and popping back over to the jobs window to see the jobs start again, I also need to go into System Prefs, FCserver and stop the service and start again.
So my research shows if your going to back catalogue stuff - all our files are correct media formats ie AT, WMV, GET A BIG BOX a 8 core xserve with ram will be your friend, PLAN PLAN PLAN - TEST TEST TEST and just when you are ready load the IT Gun, clock the lever and then tell your staff - "you all good to use that funny icon on your desktop" turn around and walk back to your desk, and wait for the phone calls !

    Hi,
Today I gave up. The wireless side of the router goes off after 10 minutes or so. A reboot brings it on again and it then works okay for the rest of the time (can be on for hours) However, I do not want to leave it perminantly on so I have returned it to the shop where I bought it and changed it for a different make.

  • WRT54G2 - The story so far

I have closed the thread "WRT54G2 setup and using Linksys software", even though all is still not well, in order to create this summary here in the hope it will help others.
    The story so far:
Following problems with the installation of the WRT54G2 router and the Linksys EasyLink Advisor Software I have:
    1. Downloaded and installed the firmware update 1.0.03.
    2. Followed all the instructions for setting the router back to factory defaults.
    3. Reinstalled the router and the Easylink software.
For some reason on my Avanti Satellite set up the browser address to get into the router setup is 192.168.0.1
I can get to the setup using the Easylink software but I can't use a number of the other  options (like wireless security) as they still give the error message “Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation”. Nice though the idea is in its present state the software has limited use so I have removed it.
I have set up the wireless section via the browser.
So where do I stand now? The router works, however, after about 10 to 15 minutes the wireless section simply disappears. A scan for it shows it no longer exists. My wireless printer is also not available even when connected via the LAN.
The cure is to turn off the router for a few seconds then reboot it. It then works okay for as long as I leave it on. If I turn it off for a long period (overnight) then it will always fail to operate after 10 to 15 minutes, again, but okay for the day after a reboot. Very odd!
I have done more resets, reboots and reinstalls than I have had hot dinners but still end up with the same problems.
For interest I am using a laptop with a Celeron (1.4GHz), 1.5 GB memory, and an ATi mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card and Windows XP home with SP3.
I hope this helps others and someone can up with a cure for the routers odd behaviour.
    Regards

  • My story of HDCP-troubles ATV3, still unsolved!

I had my ATV3 working just fine, streaming national TV directly from my Ipad with airplay, and even streaming movies from my Imac, with the app Air Video that let me start & stop everything with my Ipad. I was lucky and finally I found a topclass solution, and I don't need to burn dvd:s anymore. I reached my goal. Yippie!
Without changing my setup at all, suddenly after 5 month it just stopped working, and probably I get to see the first 3-6 seconds of the movie, then it freeze. Trying to play again, and the error-messege "The contain need to be supported by HDCP" appear on the screen. (My TV support HDCP)
Hello!?!?! It worked just fine for 5 months as it was. I really tried everything to solve the problem. Expensive highspeed cables, changning the inputs, updated my router, tv and everything else. Reset the system a thousand times. But NO! Just the 3-6 seconds of streaming and then it stops, telling me about the HDCP, that my supports. It wont work even with my ATV3 connected by networkcable to my router (I prefer cables).
If I connect my Ipad directly to my TV through an HDMI-adapter, exactly the same files works just fineto play. But Hey... What's the function about having an ATV, if you cant stream content to it?? It seems like this problem is escalating around our globe, and no-one, even Apple, seems to understand what is wrong... :-(
Listen to this then: Finally I was able to borrow a another ATV3 from a friend, with the same firmware. And guess what. It was working again! Gosh... It is something wrong with the hardware in my unit I thought, and I returned it to the store, with a long letter describing the problem.
After 1 month, I received a new unit from Apple, and I was really nervous hooking it up in my home.
1, 2, 3 , 4, 5, 6.... Freeze! Again! Even with the new unit! Start to get really tired about this and that it seems that there's no solution. Hey. It worked here for 5 months. Frankly. Nobody knows, so I send it back now, once again... :-(
Still... My friends ATV3-unit with the same firmware working just fine here in my setup.
You out there. The first one that come up with a solution to this "Twillight Zone Story" get some reward of some kind! ;-)
APPLE. What is wrong here ???

Thanx Rudegar. I posted my story to Apple at the same time. We'll see.
The strange stuff is that is that I'd come to the conclusion that some of their units have some major trouble with the handshaking of the HDCP-Protocoll. My first unit that was working fine for 5 Months on my big major Samsung TV, suddenly stopped, as I described here above. But it actually was working fine when I hooked it up on a cheap 20" LG Screen.
Do not forget that at the same time, my friends unit (with the same firmware) was working just fine on my big Major Samsung. And the fact that the same file and movies plays just fine, if i hook it upp with cablel direct to my TV. ATV is isolated as the bad guy.
Crazy & Strange... We''ll see when I get it back here again. I'll try your tip regarding to restore the firmware connected to my Imac.
Maybe, I now get the chance to include a brand new 72" TV in the familybudget.... ;-)

  • My story so far...

    Hello,
This is my story: I got my first ever Mac in July 2009, I was excited and couldn't wait for it to arrive. I was totally new to the system then, I had only ever touched a Mac once in my life at PC World, and that was only for a minute. So, I got my Mac, set everything up and I was exploring on the new things I could do. Then the problems started...
I started to get beachballs every few minutes due to a hard drive issue, as I read on here. I had never seen the beachball before until then. I rang Apple Support and they suggested to remove my preference files, caches, run permissions check, run hardware test etc. I asked about what I would have to do if the system needed to be repaired, they said you'll have to take it to an ASP. What the heck? When my Toshiba breaks down, next day I get a DHL van on my door to collect my laptop, and these guys want me to take it to them?!?. Obviously, I'm not happy. The deletion of the preferences had made the problem a bit better, but I still kept on getting beachballs every now and then. I decided to reinstall as I had nothing to lose. The problem was still there, but it was very infrequent, then it just stopped altogether. Then came Snow Leopard...
I got my Snow Leopard copy on launch day and did an upgrade as I didn't want to do a clean install. I was impressed at first, until I timed the boot up times, boot times were slower than Leopard. I also got beachballs more often and it didn't feel as fast. RAM usage is also pretty high, with only 1.5GB/4GB free after bootup. Now today, I woke up to even more horror, my time had reset, my firewall had reset, my keychain wasn't working properly, and everything was so slow.
Now, remember, this is my first Mac. And so far, my experience hasn't been the best of experiences.
Right now, at this point, I just feel like giving up the Mac switchover and moving back to Windows. I really don't wanna do this. So I'm asking you, what can I do to fix these problems? I don't want to reinstall because Time Machine won't let me backup to a FAT hard drive.

  • BT Infinity, the story so far

For some odd reason my speed drops dramatically as soon as it hits 12.00am and as I play online poker late at night its a real pain. Also yesterday my HH disconnected and re-synced about 50 times all through the day and evening.
I'm guessing all of the above is normal as I am still in my 10 day trainning period. Just hope is steadys out in the next 5 days as I have had bad experiences with BT in the past with their BT Total Broadbad back in 2006-2007 and don't want to go down that road again.
    Will keep ya updated

Yeah mate, that's why I never bothered raising a fault, only if it disconnects and dosen't come back on then I will. Aint had any disconnections today so far so fingers crossed, just a bit baffled about the big drop in speed at midnight, as soon as the clock hits 00.00am..BANG! 3-5 mb and a lot off page refreshing. Maybe they think thats my peak time....lol. I'm not a big user either, I have downloaded 60gb so far and thats just because it's new and I'm having a ball with the speed but now slowed down and still well within my 300gb quota before getting limited speed at peak times.
Oh well, I'll see how it goes after 10-14 days and if it's not up to scratch I'll raise a fault. Until then it's not worth worring about just yet

  • Story so far - 1st 24hrs with Infinity

Just thought I'd post my experience so far, one day after moving from Sky phone-line & Unlimited ADSL to BT phone-line & Unlimited Infininty 1.
    Sky-to-BT switch-over scheduled for Mon 18th Nov., 08:00 - 13:00 time slot.
    On the day :
     - 08:00 : Sky telephone & broadband went dead - as expected
     - 10:30 : Contractor arrived (& rather reluctantly agreed to run cabling to connect my HH5 16m away from the master socket)
     - 11:30 : Infinity up & running.
     - 20:30 : Telephone service back on (with same telephone number).
      Other points :
     - Estimated speeds, based on post code = 27Mb Down, 6Mb up. Actual (after 24 hrs) = 38Mb down, 7.5Mb up
     - New Android tablet connected via 5Ghz wifi is getting 38Mb down and 7.5Mb up (i.e. no reduction over wifi)
     - 6yr old laptop connected via 2.4Ghz wifi is getting 20Mb down & 5mb up.
     - various devices (iPad, Android smartphone, Q2 cube internet radio) connected at 2.4 & 5 Ghz, all working ok.
     - Connected my son's xbox (via ethernet) using "device+function" utility on router resulted in no NAT restriction.
     - On-demand working on 2 x Sky boxes connected via ethernet cable (required them to be switched off & on at wall socket to work)
     - PS3 connected to internet OK
So, early days but so far very pleased. Hope it stays like this

Just a heads up on my first 5 days of Infinity 2
Installed on time - engineer called first thing from exchange, line went dead for 15 minutes then he arrived and set me up.
No extra cabling required - switching from Virgin ADSL and have a long extenions EJ cable already under the carpet from phone to router.
Was promised speeds of up to 59 down and 17 up.
Have been regularly undertaking speed checks especially at weekend and late eveings when whilst with VM speed died from my max of 14 down and 1 up.
Speed results indicate 75 down and 14 up whenever i have done the test. - That's excellent, of course things might change but so far so damm good.
Router only reset itself once in the first three days.
I do switch it off sometimes and when i switch it back on the lights go; Green, blue for a few seconds, then orange flashing with the  thumb sign flashing, thumb sign stops flashing and flashing orange slows down till it becomes a solid light, a minute later it goes blue. (Is all this normal on switching on?)
Many thanks ( I did not expect such a seemless transfer after hearing the horror stories and thanks also must got o VM for the transition as well)
Happy to post here, especially if it helps anyone else.

  • My broadband experience. The story so far....

Hello. I just thought I'd highlight my plight with BT. Issue is still not fixed...see my version of War and Peace below. Enjoy!
On the 15th (after 2+ years of solid connectivity) the hub started flashing green and orange every 20 minutes or so.....
Dec 15: Reported by phone; Diagnosed as hub fault
    Dec 17th Replacement hub received
Dec 18th – Reported broadband still bouncing. Was informed further tests would be carried out.
Dec 19th – Called for update. Was informed there was a confirmed fault. An engineer would be sent.
Dec 24th – Engineer visited and installed new MK3 socket and moved hub position.
(Following his visit was unable to dial out on the phone)
Dec 27th – Reported phone issue and continuing broadband issue.
Dec 28th – 2nd engineer visited without correct test gear but confirmed there was a line fault. Said he would ask for a broadband engineer to be scheduled.
Dec 29th – Again informed BT that fault was not fixed. No record of previous engineers visit. Agreed to schedule another engineer.
Dec 31st – Engineer should have visited between 1 and 6 pm. Nobody showed.
Jan 1st – Reported no show from engineer. Engineer scheduled for tomorrow.
Jan 2nd – Engineer arrived (a line engineer). Fixed the line fault (caused by the engineer on the 24th not wiring the socket correctly). Carried out extensive tests and proved the fault was with the line, not internal to the property.
Jan 2nd (PM) – Reported again – Broadband engineer scheduled for the 5th.
Jan 5th – Broadband engineer arrived. Tested internal equipment. Proved line fault. He went to exchange and called from there. Confirmed a card issue. Informed me the card needed replacing or moving to new slot. He informed this would be carried out overnight by exchange engineer.
Jan 6th – Reported issue still happening (broadband bouncing) in the a.m. Called back at 6pm to be informed the engineering team had gone home so could not get an update.
Jan 7th – Call back from the engineering team at 3pm. They were unable to contact the engineer involved as he was not at work the previous day. He would be working tomorrow so update then.
    Jan 8th - ?

  • My computer and my ipod- the story so far...

If anybody is out there that has a wee bit more knowlegde with computers than me (that wont be hard- im rubbish!!) then can you help with my problem??
I have an ipod mini, have had it for about a year now, but havent use it for about 6 months of that!
I recently went away and my sister got an ipod nano for xmas. She has installed her ipod onto itunes fine and manages to download music etc with no stress. I have come back and tried to use my ipod on itunes but it wont recognise it!
well it does but i cant click on anything, download anything or use the blasted thing! And... i managed to wipe all my tunes off it in the process of trying to figure out whats up with it!!
Basically the main ipod it recognises is my sisters and i have now got all of her stuff on mine!
pllleeaassee help me as i am desperate to listen to some good music!!
    thanks lucy.

    well done lucy!
sorry, i've been off doing some stuff in some other threads, and only just managed to work my way back to this one.

  • THANK YOU - b-noir, dmitry, &c.  Got it working so far...

First off an ENORMOUS THANK YOU to everyone who's been suggesting fixes for the problems with iTunes 5..... not least Dmitry Byk and others too numerous to mention - but especially b-noir !
    b My system :
Windows PC with XP Home Edition, Service pack 2, and all up to date via windows update. Also... Norton Internet Security (including Antivirus) 2005, and Webroot's Spy Sweeper aswell...all sitting behind a firewall router.
    b My Symptoms :
Happily clicked on the option to upgrade to iTunes5 after experiencing no trouble at all to date....
When I tried to install iTunes, at the end of the install process, the whole system locked solid....no Ctrl Alt Del, nothing ! Had to push the reset switch. Once re-set, the PC re-booted but had disabled my Active Desktop. Everything worked OK in this state, except when I tried to launch iTunes from the desktop when the computer would lock solid with the 'hourglass' next to the cursor - and only a punch of the re-set switch would re-boot it (...and on one occasion I tried leaving it for a couple of hours to see if it managed to 'unlock' itself before resorting to this !) No blue screens of doom, and no error messages - just a total 'lock-up' !
NB !!! I also suspect that I had not shut down my Norton 2005 while installing iTunes.
b OK...the fix so far..with HUGE THANKS to those mentioned above.
First I made a backup of my 'My iTunes' folder to ensure a copy of my files (should have done that ages ago !
Then removing iTunes was a problem - since it did not appear in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs list !
Cue a load of dredging around the threads....
First I followed the advice on the Apple Support page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
I followed every step to clean the machine BUT did NOT try and install iTunes after every step. I just kept cleaning out the old stuff. I did the download of the windows cleanup utility....which found an iTunes entry even though it did not appear in control panel's add/remove programs.
I now followed Dmitry Byk's steps 1 and 2 here : Dmitry Byk, "Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...", 12:19am Sep 11, 2005 CDT
BUT at this stage did NOT start installing Quicktime, Bonjour and iTunes.
I did download the standalone programs from his links in step 3 & 4 and saved them to a folder ready for use later. Latest iTunes was downloaded from the main Apple link.
Then I followed someone else's advice on clearing out hidden iTunes/Quicktime folders hidden in Application Data folders, and also the Quicktime/iTunes folders in Program Files.... The step-by-step for this was found on a thread but the name and location I have lost and can't find again. IF ANYONE RECOGNISES THIS BIT PLEASE POST A LINK. The posting took you step by step through revealing the hidden folders and working through the various locations where iTunes & Quicktime leave remnants of folders. I can't remember the name of the person who put it up... although maybe b-noir pointed someone to it on another thread which I followed ?!
Once I'd finished all the delting... i switched off my pC, left it a while and then came back to start installing.....
    ### ii Before Installing I disconnected from the internet, and then disabled Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus by right clicking on the system tray (bottom right of the screen) icon and disbling protection until the next re-start.
i I also totally shut down my Spy Sweeper software, and then for good measure closed all the other programs with icons in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen.###
Next I installed the freshly downloaded Quicktime and just accepted the file associations at the end of the set-up procedure.
Next I re-booted the computer, and then went through all my 'shut downs' in the paragraph marked ### above.
Next step was to install Bonjour just like Dmitry Byk tells you in his posting (see link above).
Re-boot the computer, and do all the ##

hang on.... here's the rest !.......
...Re-boot the computer and do all the ### paragraph shut-downs again.
Next I installed iTunes from the setup program freshly downloaded from Apple. I unchecked the 'search for music' options and allowed the 'organise my music' option, and once the install had finished the computer seemed to be working fine.
Next I opened up Norton Internet Security and went to Status & Settings, Personal Firewall, Configure, and under the Programs tab ensure that the entried for iTunes and Bonjour were set to Permit All in the Internet Access column.
Now I closed everything and re-booted....
Once I'd done this I made sure that Norton Internet Security & A/Virus protections were running, reconnected to the internet and double clicked on my shiny new iTunes icon on the desktop......
AND IT WORKED OK with full access to the Music Store and all my music listed correctly.
That's the story so far.... My next steps are to do all my ### para shut-downs and install the latest iPod Updater Software as downloaded from Apple (did I mention that I cleared out all of those entries in Control Panel (Add/Remove programs) before starting the installs aswell ?!)
Once that's done I'll plug in my iPod and try a synch to check all's well...... I was lucky that the total 'lock-up' I was experiencing meant I couldn't even try to synch my iPod and so still had the use of it's music trouble free while I dredged around trying to fix iTunes.
I'll let you know if this works OK.....
Now some of the technically minded of you will be able to point out that some of the above steps might not be necessary, but hey - it worked for me and so i thought it was worth sharing in case someone else out there has the same crashing.
b A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to b-noir and Dmitry Byk in particular. Nothing I've written above is my own clever computer insiight - but a collection of the work done by the good people who post replies with assistance.
b Moreover - people like b-noir deserve a shiny new Mac System from Apple as a thank you for their tireless efforts to help people out. They are doing some serious corporate-reputation-recovery in their own time and deserve more of a reward than just our simple texted 'thank you's.....
b ii THANKS to all of you who have suggested fixes - it's greatly appreciated by simpletons like me !!!
    Cheers, Taffmaster

But later on that day my mother in laws phone was cut off .so i one again phoned up and was told sorry but I don't no why the phone was cut off Then I was told I will have to order again and she will lose her old phone number this is causing her more stress than when her husband died of cancer last year .we have a new date phone 27 oct bb 29 oct she has been without a phone for 5days . The sale dep did say we can request her old number back when phone is activated if eneyone one can confirm this I woud be grateful I will let you no how I get on fingers x thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forum
Yes you should be able to request the old number, normally after a few days as the number needs to be released from the original supplier, in this case talk talk.
Just call the service dept on 0800 800 150, although it could take a few more days once the order has progressed for it to become active

  • Bad experience with HP

A STORY OF YOUR TROUBLED CUSTOMER
I write this story regretting two things. First the reputation that HP laptops had, is diminishing and second that I bought an HP laptop. (HP notebook G6-2201ax)
The story begins in an emotional and a typical Indian background in which there is an obedient child and his parents gift him an HP laptop after completing his graduation with good grades. I was very happy with the gift and the offers that came along (as it was Diwali time). The next day I left for pune (Maharashtra) with it for beginning a new career in a software company.
A little description of the events that took place before buying this laptop: Many of my friends and cousins had suggested me not to buy an HP laptop because of its low battery backup and heating problem. There was not a single person in my circle who was on HP’s side when it came to laptops. Still, (I guess this is where I started my journey full of mistakes. Don’t worry yet, you will understand what I mean as you read further) I bought this laptop thinking that the cool sense technology and the new AMD processor will prove all my family members and my friends wrong. But what happened was exactly the other way around.
Precisely ten days after getting my laptop from the dealer (Navjeevan computers, Jalgaon), when I tried starting it one evening, it gave an error “no boot device found”. I thought this was a serious hard disk issue and so I called up HP customer support the next day. They said that I will have to take my laptop to the nearest service center (that was in kothrud, pune). Now this is where the movie begins (which is very similar to a movie in which a common man enters a typical government office). As soon as I entered the service center I was made to fill a long enquiry form and made to wait in a queue. When my chance came, the engineer switched on my laptop, saw the error message and said that the hard disk will have to be replaced (he said it so spontaneously that I guess he didn’t really try to understand the problem. It wouldn’t have mattered to him anyway, as it’s the company that bears the cost of replacing the hard disk and not him. He just wanted to get this issue resolved as soon as possible).
After listening, I enquired, “what about my data?” There was a lot of important information in the laptop and I hadn’t even taken its backup as I was busy settling in the new work environment and also I didn’t expect the hard disk to crash on the 11th day itself. He said he was sorry and that the company has no policy for data recovery. I asked further if there was any way to get my data back. He replied that you may take it outside and try it with some external connector. So I took it to another laptop repair facility but the technique didn’t work out.
Disappointedly I took the hard disk back and told the engineer to replace it. He placed the order and told me to check after 4-5 days. After 5 days I called up the service center and no one answered. This went on for 2 days (and I had tried to call them at least 4 times a day and not during their breaks). Finally I had to go the service center myself (that is 25 km from where I stay currently. I had shifted to a new place after giving my laptop to the service center) and I got to know that the receptionist was on leave and so there was no one who had time to answer the call. (WOW. I have never seen such busy and dedicated people)
I somehow managed to find the engineer who was handling my case and asked him about the progress. He said that the new hard disk had arrived but even that had failed to start. (The next line he said was really shocking). He continued that the real problem was in the motherboard and now they would be replacing the motherboard that would take another 5-6 days.
ME: “How do I finish my work that is already delayed?”
HIM: He gave me a smile
ME: “Will someone would answer my call when I call up next time?”
HIM: He gave me a smile again
ME: “How you people define reliability of your product that cannot even work properly for 12 days.”  HIM:  He smiled yet again.
(OH MY GOD! I was shocked to see how a person can be so happy to hear about someone’s problem and especially when that person is actually his customer. My conclusion was that may be nobody cares here about any of their customer.)
Now some days passed and let me tell you that I gave my laptop to the service center on 15th December and by now Christmas was around the corner and New Year too was not far. These festivals did add up to the number of days required for replacement.
I was waiting for the motherboard and had already given the recovery discs to the service center, which the dealer had provided, along with the laptop. After 8 days I called up the service center to ask about the mother board (well this time I was expecting them to learn from their earlier mistake and call me when the mother board arrives or if there is any delay) and they said that it had arrived and they are trying to install the OS and drivers. But to add up to my bad luck (and HP’s hopeless support) the recover discs did not support the motherboard. Now it was the dealer with whom I had to converse. (I felt so alone, stuck between all HP’s “great” support team members. Now I understand how a common man might be feeling while being bullied in a government office).
Now people, it’s time for the actor, the dealer, who speaks but does nothing much to keep up to his words, to enter. While buying this laptop from him, I remember one particular thing he had promised: that he would lend his support even after my warranty expires. He also added that his customers still come to him after 5 years of buying laptop. (I felt proud on my decision of choosing the correct dealer .ANOTHER BIG MISTAKE!). So finally I called him up and of course he was very busy with his customers (well who am I then, till now I thought I was his customer too) and so he didn’t come on line. One of his subordinate spoke to me. I narrated my whole story to him and very coolly he asked me to get the laptop to the showroom. I shouted, “I am 400 km away from your showroom, how can you expect me to get it there. Don’t you trust your own company’s service center people? The laptop is with them for past 15 days.”
I guess finally he got back to his senses and started telling me some procedure which even the service center people didn’t know. He told me, some tattoo procedure was to be done to get the recovery disc working. I asked why you don’t speak to the HP service center people directly as I didn’t understand the procedure properly, but he replied that HP people don’t listen to them (My god. It sounds as if two school girls who have some ego issues talking to each other; VERY UNPROFESSIONAL). I still insisted that he should speak to the service center people (as there seems to be no other solution) and I gave him all the details including the engineer’s name who was looking after my case (UTKARSH, another out of this world, one-of-a-kind of person. I remember, during the process of getting my laptop repaired, he had promised me he will call after 1 day, but he didn’t call even after two days. Then, later sometime he said he will call me after 4 hours, the day came to an end but my wait never came to an end. The reason may be either his watch does not work properly or he simply doesn’t look at it. I guess this person and everyone in the service center needs a new watch).
The dealer lived up to my expectations and had not called up the service center engineer. But lucky me, now I got to speak to the head dealer. He repeated the same thing:  that “the HP service center people don’t listen to us and we can’t do anything” (sounds so contradicting to what he had said while selling me the laptop). He gave me the regional coordinator’s(Maithili) contact number and also regional head’s e mail.
I was little relieved that finally I would be getting to speak with some high authority and with the R&D in progress on my laptop (I feel R&D is the correct term to describe what was being done with my laptop) the repair would be complete soon or rather I felt my troublesome days were about to come to an end (but……. in vain). So I called up Maithili and told her my story (feeling really hopeful). She added the manager of the service center to our conversation (conference call) and told him to repair my laptop and give it back in 7 days max. I was stunned to hear that. She said it very confidently and as if she was doing the very correct thing. I guess she did not realize that she was adding 7 days to the earlier 15 days and bringing the total to 22 days now. So, I asked who is going to pay for my work that have been delayed or in some cases cancelled due to unavailability of laptop. She didn’t bother to notice this and just went ahead saying that “we are sorry for it and you will get your laptop in 7 days.” I asked again “what about my work?” She replied with same words that I will get my laptop in 7 days and shirish (who is the manager of the service center like an obedient employee) just agreed to whatever Maithili was saying. Now they ordered a new recovery media. (It was going to come from Singapore and of course add few more days to my despair).
Again like a helpless customer I had no choice but to wait……..
Nine days passed I didn’t get any call from them. Tired of waiting I called up the service center and asked for the engineer. (Well, I even have to pay my mobile bill. I am mentioning this to bring to your notice that I don’t have any privilege of calling up the HP service center free of cost).
Utkarsh came online and said that the recovery discs have reached the service center and they are now trying to install the OS and drivers. They still have some issues but they are trying. (Very good! That guy sounded so full of dedication and sincerity. At least from his words he did). The next day he called me saying that the laptop is ready (this was at 5:30 pm). I asked if I can come and collect it at 7:30pm; will the service center be open? He said yes, the service center timings are from 9 to 8. I travelled 25 km from my office to the service center and reached service center at 7:33 and found it closed. I tried calling up Maithili about this harassing and frustrating behavior but she was unavailable. So I messaged her. She called me after some time and started the conversation with saying that the service center engineer will come and deliver the laptop anywhere I ask. (Didn’t seem like compensation at all). At this stage I didn’t want any favors from the people and company where even higher authorities do not stick to their word. I said “please spare me your favors and just tell me the exact timings of the service center and I will go collect it myself.” She told me its 10 to 6. Then I asked if these are the timings then why 9 to 8 is printed outside the service center door. Of course she did not reply to that and changed the topic.
My next question was, “how you define the reliability of your product when it stops working on the 11th day (and that too its motherboard has some problem)”. She said HP has a very big market share and blah blah blah…… I continued, now consider my laptop and define reliability. She said sometimes we face this kind of peculiar issue but we do resolve them. (Resolve them taking their own sweet time!). I said, “Ok, accepted that your product is reliable but what about your service. When your engineers were doing their research on my laptop, no one even had the courtesy of offering me a stand by laptop” (forget the compensation). She just ended the conversation saying “we are sorry” and asked again if I wanted my laptop delivered anywhere. I ended the conversation by pleading not to send the laptop anywhere because there are high chances that the engineer might goof up and add up to my problems somehow. I would come and take it from the service center myself.
Next day, even after pleading not to send my laptop with anyone and specifically saying that I would collect it myself, the service center people sent it with their field engineer. (This is the limit of bad coordination. How can you do something exactly opposite of what you were asked to?). In the evening I got a call from the field engineer, I told him where I was and finally I got my laptop. (Phhhhhheeeeewwwwwww)
What led to this series of events? If only I had listened to my cousins and friends, this would have never happened. I pray no other person has to go through all this.
I feel all this could be avoided, if the service center people had given me a new laptop on 5th or 6th day and continued their R&D on the original laptop indefinitely(why only 1 month. Keep doing it till time ends). Now you would say that it is against company’s policy or some other legal issues might not allow you to do so. But what is the use of such kind of policy where the customer has to face so many problems.
Every morning I get up, I pray that my laptop should not face some problem again in the near future.
To conclude, your regional manager and your service center people are very confident about the product’s reliability and the service they offer (the reception at the service center had something printed on the wall saying HP is awarded the best service prize for 2011.SERIOULSY! I guess I should forward this feedback to them also.) So how about increasing my laptop’s warranty? Can you people do that with your confidence in your product? I don’t want to mention the amount of work I have lost or have been delayed, my phone bills, unnecessary travel expenses, priceless time etc…
I hope this mail reaches the right authority and they reply to this helpless customer who has no other choice but to wait.
This is not the end. After two days I see that my windows 8 is not activated. The process of coming to a solution is still going and god only knows when will I get my laptop working properly.
After the incident (that actually still continues) I would like put forward my demands:
Replace my laptop and give me a new one.
    Extended warranty
Compensation for mobile bills, travel expenses, work loss, time wasted etc.
    Compensation for data loss
    Monetary compensation
    Mental disturbance and distraction

  • ITunes does not authenticate, even though it gives message that it does

The story so far – in detail.
One day, over a year ago now, my iPod would not synch properly with my iTunes and I got a message telling me some of the songs were not authorized. The iPod locked up and had to be rebooted/reinstalled at the apple store and they told me it was dying.
{As it turned out, it was my laptop that was dying – the motherboard would no longer see half my memory and the firewire 400 was intermittent, which must have caused the iPod to freak out, because I’m still able to use the iPod a year later, but I never plug it into the firewire 400 on this laptop.} This did not fix the inability to move the music, which coincidently (the store and on-line support did not indicate a link) happed around the same time.
Some extra background details are needed here to help frame the issue.
The original music on all my computers was purchased on three different iTunes accounts for various reasons, including multiple moves. (This is why I would really like an account column in the view options)
This is not my original laptop, my wife is not using her original iMac. We have upgraded and transferred all our files, but the problem came long after that time (years).
My wife’s iMac is home to the original, albeit transferred, files. All the music authorizes and works fine on her computer. It is a G5.
The music will not work on my computer (Powerbook G4) or my sons’ computers (Intel Duo Macbooks).
When I try to play the music, I get the not authorized pop-up and it tells me to enter the password to authorize. I enter the correct password and I get the new pop-up that tells me I have successfully authorized the music, but it doesn’t start playing as it normally should. I click on the now (supposedly) authorized song again, and I get the same not authorized message. Any second, or subsequent time through this loop yields the same results, but at least the number of authorized computers remains correct.
Between the on-line help and the store I have been asked to do the following, and have complied:
Deauthorize and reauthorize the music files.
Deauthorize and reauthorize all my music accounts (on-line help performed the deauthorization on all the accounts I thought I had, turns out I have one more, but it never had a problem).
Uninstall/remove iTunes from the offending computer and reinstall it.
Throw away the offending music files and re-add them.
Put all my music on my wife’s computer, put it on an iPod, remove the music from my computer, re-add all the music from the iPod.
Re-install my OS, with a reinstallation of iTunes and re-add all the music.
Find a backup copy of the music saved to my external hard drive and reload it.
Load the music on other computers and see if they will authorize.
None of the above (an probably some I am forgetting) worked, so I decided to take a break from the frustration and just wait and see if some future iTunes upgrade would fix the problem in the same mysterious way it appeared. You may have guessed by my writing in this forum that there was no joy on that coarse of action. So here I am for one more attempt with the vain hope that after a year someone else has had this problem and someone has figured out how to fix it.
If, or likely when, no one can provide a fix this time, I would like to propose a solution with consideration for the year of being unable to access songs I legally purchased.

    Hey Caseyb1tx,
I'd take a look at the following two articles to see if they can resolve the issue you're experiencing:
iTunes: Downloading iTunes for Windows using Internet Explorer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3212
Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1926
The File Download window will ask you to Run or Save the iTunes file you are downloading, try choosing each option to see if one works over the other - if you Save it, the iTunesSetup.exe file is saved onto your computer, so look where it is saving to and open the file from there to install iTunes.
    Have a good one,
    David

  • Kerberos, Active Directory & WLS 10.3.5 on Solaris 10 (also UCM 11g)

    The story so far :
I have a keytab from the kdc and have configured krb5.conf such that kinit and using the Kinit class from rt.jar (from the 1.5 OS JDK not the 1.6 used with WLS) are working.
An AD authentication provider in WLS is allowing logins to UCM using AD domain accounts, this is the top provider.
I've configured a negotiate identity assertion provider (default settings).
I've created a JAAS configuration file that includes debug=true.
I've set a bunch of start parameters for the UCM managed server which point to the JAAS config file, enable negotiation and set Kerberos debug on.
I've cleared the managed server and admin server caches umpteen times and performed umpteen + n restarts but to no avail. Needless to say, it (ie Kerberos ticket negotiation resulting in not having to reenter my network credentials, having already authenticated to the AD domain, to UCM) is not working.
But, curious oddity #1, I am getting no debug regarding krb5 in the managed server logs/out at all (the start up parameters do register in the log!) even if I incorporate a deliberate error. Nothing, de nada, zilch.
Has anyone got WNA/Kerberos working with WLS 10.3.5 using java 1.6 on Solaris 10 64bit SPARC with or without UCM? Or any other platform/application? Is anyone able to cast any light on why there is no debug?

It could be related to the size of the kerberos ticket (not sure here, just a guess).
When a user belongs to many groups, it affects the size of the ticket, some tips are provided here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327825
(not related to JRockit, but to the MaxTokenSize in the Windows registry).
Could also run into trouble when using a front-end such as Apache HTTP Server (and WebCache)
    - http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html (set the LimitRequestFieldSize http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#limitrequestfieldsize appropriately)
    - WebCache: WXE-11355 Single request header length exceeds configured maximum. A forbidden error response is returned to the client. Client IP: %s error
    - Cause: One of the headers in the request exceeded the configured maximum.
    - Action: Adjust the maximum individual header size limit in the Security page of OracleAS Web Cache Manager. If the problem persists, contact Oracle Support Services.

I needed to power down computer, not even ctrl-alt-del was working anymore, what suggest a hang in task manager itself. Firefox was still alive. I could minimize LR window and click on a link in Firefox, only to see it hang than in that particular tab. From there I still could change tab and make another click, with the same result.
To power down the system was the only way out. I wonder if there are some traces of the problem in some of the syslogs, I am not close to be a Windows internals expert though...
Ah this Lightroom, its such a troubled story so far...

You have most likely ran in to the brilliance that is Adobe's designers and

are large than 10,000 pixels in either the X or Y or both. Check the pixel
