My support options (UK)

Hi, I'm finding myself a bit disillusioned with the apple support network at the moment and I was wondering if anybody could offer any help. I have upgraded to the full applecare (3 years) but I've never really felt like any support really exists. Currently my Macbook is showing service battery and probably needs a new one however I'm finding it impossible to find an option that doesn't take up a huge amount of my time. I'm sure this wasn't the case a few years ago and I'm sure this isn't the case with Dell etc. My macbook has fortunately been trouble free but this isn't the case for everyone.
Anyway, so as far as I can see it my options are as follows.
1. Apple Approved Reseller
My nearest reseller is in Windsor about 5 miles away which is absolutely fine. I love the resellers primarily because they aren't packed and fall of tourists/whoever on every computer in sight.
HOWEVER, for a macbook battery repair (not necessarily a repair, might even tell me to live with it) they said they would need 10-14 business days. This puts my mac out of use for 3 weeks. I don't personally see how this is an option for casual home users let alone pro users who rely on their laptop for business.
2. Official Apple Store
My nearest store is 20 miles away (about an hour long journey) which I guess is just a fact of life if you live in the UK. Any journey into these stores costs me time and money. My main issue however is how busy they are; upon consulting the genius bar booking system the next booking in Regents Street is 4 days away. White City offers appointments but certainly nothing on the next day, I'd have to wait 2/3. The way I work (freelance) means that I can't really plan that far ahead and even if I could it doesn't fill me with confidence that if things went caput, my laptop would be out of action for that long. And secondly, a genius bar quibble: on my last appointment despite booking for 6.30, I ended up waiting half an hour. What is the point in a booking system if it seems customers are dealt with on a first come, first served basis?
If I do go into a genius bar, will I even get the problem fixed there and then or am I still subject to a 10-14 business day wait?
Like I say, this is just a battery so it isn't a deal breaker for me but it is forcing me to seriously consider alternatives when I get my next laptop (in a couple of months). Any support system which puts you out of action for 2-3 weeks is useless to me. A laptop is a business tool, not a lifestyle accessory I can forget about for a while. For my girlfriend, with another Macbook model it is a far more serious problem and she's currently using a laptop with a non-clickable trackpad and a screen which flickers and can't maintain a constant brightness. It's barely useable but she doesn't really have an alternative.
Are there any options or is this just the Apple reality?

I had exactly the same discussion with the apple store when they had to repair mine. Was out of action for 10 days cos they had a backlog. I use mine for work too and this is just not good enough.
Most apple stuff will only last a few years from my experience. I guess their argument would be by then you wanna be upgrading anyway, but for users who don't need mega ram and super processors why shouldn't a laptop last a good ten years if looked after and maintained?!
Your issue seems quite cut and dried. I would ring the nearest store explain the issue and see if they can't send you out a new one. Worth a try. Often apple will keep repairing stuff tho rather than give you new part. No idea why, as my macbook has pretty much had everything including motherboard and screen and casing replaced.
Must have cost them far more in labour and parts then to just replace like for like!?

  • No Language and Input Support option in my OS 6 Applications list - need to add second language

    I have a Curve 9300 bought a few weeks ago in the Caribbean (Digicel carrier). I'm now in Germany and was able to switch between english and german languages for the past few weeks; however this evening I synced the device with my Macbook for the first time, which prompted an upgrade in software.
    Now I have OS version 6, but my language selection is only English and portuguese. When I select Applications on the desktop software, it does not give me the Language and Input Support option to re-add german.
    I tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the offiste RIM link,(where people can choose their international carriers), but the download is an unreadable Text Edit format. I've tried un- and re-installing on my mac, but that doesn't do anything, and i don't know how to uninstall from the device itself (plus am scared i'll lose all my info).
    Can anyone help? I've exhausted every option and I need to write in both languages for work...

    Please remember as this section of forums is for Mac so the below mentioned steps can only be performed on a PC only not Mac. If you want to install Korean language support on your device you can try this :
    1.Download and Install on your PC an  OS pack having All Language  from here Indosat or  Device Software Download Sites for BlackBerry
    ( Make sure you are downloading for the same device model )
    2.. Download and install the latest BlackBerry desktop software for Windows from here BlackBerry desktop software
    3.Search your C: drive for Vendor.xml and delete them, there may be one or two vendor.xml ( On your Pc change your folders option to show hidden files/folders ) :
        C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
        C:\Users\Windows UserName\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
    Once completed Open BlackBerry Desktop Software for Windows > Select Applications. > In the Language and Input Support section, select the language to be added to the BlackBerry smartphone (a + will appear next to the language to install) > Click Apply.

    Put in the serial number but was not offered an extended apple care plan. I guess if you purchase a new one because your old one is out of warranty you get a deal for $179 but you don't get a chance for an extended warranty. You don't get a new box or earbuds, just a brand new iPod. Good deal but since my first died under warranty, got a new one for free, second one I smashed the screen and got a new one for (I don't remember) and now the hard drive went and I paid $179 for a new one, I was hoping to get an extended warranty. But I guess not...

  • Best support option for failing Bluetooth?

    In the past few weeks or so, my Macbook has been losing bluetooth connectivity intermittently. I was hoping that somehow the 10.4.8 update would help, but if anything it's only gotten worse. Now it doesn't just happen when the laptop is hot, but also right after a cold boot.
    Anyway, I'm fed up and was wondering what would be the best support option. Should I call Applecare or take it to my local genius bar?

    So the problem was fixed at the Apple Store. They replaced my logic board and the bluetooth board + cable.
    I have to say that I'm impressed with the support I got this time. They ordered the parts and let me keep my laptop until they came in. I called to check in with them after several days when I hadn't heard back from them and was told they were still waiting on a few parts. The guy called me right back after he checked in the days shipment to tell me that the rest of the parts were in. I brought the laptop in that evening and the repair was complete the next morning. Very nice.
    I just wanted to throw that out there as I have posted my share of complaints about my MacBook here.

    I try it but no new options to support ME shows up in AE interface or preferences!

    What is it that you're expecting? After Effects has no special features for Arabic, and no part of After Effects is localized into Arabic.

    Do you mean physical support for repairs, or just advice? The latter is available free of charge on these forums as well as in Apple Stores.

  • Allow client to access Support Options?

    Is there a way to let my clients use the Ticket or Chat support options for their site?   Sometimes the help they need should come directly from BC... If I am on vacation, e.g.,  how can they get immediate answers if something major goes wrong?
    All they can see is the KB but not chat or tickets. They can see a closed case re: email problems....
    But can't open a new one...

    There are a number. This forum method is cumbersome (though very good, and people are very helpful), and often the elapsed time is too great for the nature or severity and/or urgency of the issues. Then, when you do get an answer, with - refer to such and such link or article, and try it, there are subsequent followups that can occur, again with the wait involved, and another layer of complexity to the problem. I would like at least have direct email with someone, or "someones, ".

    It is now 04/06/13, and not resolved, and this is a straightforward one, without complications.
    I've got more complex ones that I would be better served with direct one on one communication. I would pay for it.

    posted by stevek302 (that is also me), on 3/29/13 10:20 PM. I tried the profile method. but while installing, I chose a different folder/path then the x86 location, which is by design. At first it seemed to work, it was a clean install, without my 20 extensions, and 150 Bookmarks folders, and 100 Bookmarks Toolbar bookmarks. But now the new profile is no longer in Profile Manager. I ran the .exe setup file again, again chose a new folder, it appears to have installed in the new folder, but clicking it and opening it in the new folder, it opens with all the extensions, Bookmarks, etc., from the other Default profile. Now, it's 8 days later, and I still don't have it answered. I would willingly pay x amount a year for email, chat, or phone support, even from a third party company. But, Mozilla could use the funds.
    There are more things constantly coming up. I am a long term user. I really like FF. It is so customizable. I am a layman, not an IT/computer guy, but hopefully towards the higher end of that scale, though self-taught. I want to keep using it, but as I learn more about it and do more with it, more things come up. Right now, using Google, the results page is behaving as though an auto-paging add-on is working. I want to be able to see the related searches at the bottom of the page, but I can't get to click any because the next page endlessly loads as I get down close to the bottom. I have no auto-page extension or plugin, neither enabled, nor disabled. I may have had one sometime, but not for a while. Yet in about:config, there are a bunch of auto-paging lines. Why are they there if its been removed? And the list goes on.

    This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
    If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
    Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
    Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
    Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
    The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
    If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

  • I can no longer update my Itunes version and I also can't access online or phone support with their new support options because it won't accept my serial number.  What's up? Did support go away?

    I've been using Itunes for years with little problem and when one develops, it is quickly resolved. Now, I find myself unable to update my version of Itunes.  it asks me if I wish to update the version, I say yes, and then nothing happens. When I try to go to support, I select the Itunes downloading/synching option and basically, I can't proceed past the point of entering a valid serial number, because I'm not clear on which serial number it wants.  It says hardware, so I supply my PC serial # (I own an ASUS laptop).  I get an error message that this isn't a valid s/n, so I look for one for Itunes and can't find one anywhere.  I try to follow their explanation of how to locate your serial # but it is extremely unclear and unhelpful. So now I'm stuck.  I can't get past first base anymore.  Did Apple come up with a clever way to end their support service without actually admitting it? Or am I just being particularly dense here? Any help is appreciated. Thx

    With that one, I'd try updating using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer file, downloaded from the Apple Website:

  • App failure after OS upgrade- support options? PSE-6 Prem-4

    I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 and it's companion video app, Adobe Premiere 4.0, and I run MS Vista HP.
    I recently updated my operating system to Service Pack 2 (SP2). When the upgrade was installed, as usual there were many glitches that needed tweaking, but the worst was my Adobe apps. Both of the above named apps, came back with the same error "cannot start, reinstall program".
    After the initial error message, future attempts to start either app were not answered. Nothing happened. Reviewing the status in Task Manager showed that the apps were both running, but neither was actually visible or operating, just eating memory while standing idle.
    After reviewing the forums and knowledge bases and finding nothing on this problem, I contacted Adobe Support via Chat (the only method available) and after a long drawn out process of locating my registrations for these apps, I was told that I had  to back to  the original retailer where I bought them, several years before. The only other option was of course to BUY the latest versions from Adobe. Even if I had any recollection of where i bought it, I can only imagine how that conversation would go! The original disks were 'somewhere' but I just moved and lord only knows where they were put until all is unpacked! One would think if one had the serial numbers, that downloads or better yet, repair files, would be available to registered users, but NO!
    My original software worked fine, so no reason to spend more money in this economy, I just needed to get them working to finish a project with a deadline rapidly approaching. As I was working with PSD files, no other application would help me finish my project, so I had to get something. Perusing the Adobe website I found the trial versions of Adobe PSE 8.0 and Premiere 6.0! Great, I thought, this should work to finish my project and hopefully I would find my original software before the expiration date of the trial software!
    With ever faithful 'Murphy' standing by for the install, I got the message "Trial period expired. Please enter serial number". This happened with both apps, and the only thing I could figure s that I probably downloaded these before and there was some embedded snitch file that would not allow me to run it again. But... Murphy must have gone out for coffee, because in a moment of inspiration, I went back to my original apps and clicked on the icons... You guessed it, both apps were restored to full operation!
    So this is why I am writing this to the forum. I found a fix that Adobe either does not know, or won't tell. Whatever files went missing or corrupted during my upgrade were re-installed into the Adobe 'common' folder, restoring my original apps. If these files could be identified by Adobe techs, they could be made available for download to repair these issues without the run-around, and without making customers spend more money, the mark of a reputable software manufacturer.
    The only thing I do  not know for sure, and until I find my original disks I do not intent to investigate, is whether or not the original apps will continue to function if I uninstall the trial versions to get my disk space back,s they do not work and only take up space. I will investigate the Adobe folders and see if I can identify which files were installed with the trials, and if they may be affected by an uninstall. Sometimes the uninstaller apps are intuitive enough to know that certain files are in use by another application,and will not be included in the uninstall. But I am not going to test this theory until find my original disks!
    Please pass this info on to your friends who use MS Vista and PSE 6.0 & Prem 4.0

  • What's up with T410 order - no support options

    When I go throught the ordering options for the T410 (on the Canadian site), after the "System components" when I click "Continue", I'm taken to the Services and software page which is blank except for the "Continue" Button.  There are no options for what support/warranty to choose at all.  What's up?  Anybody else see this?  Are the options just being updated and that's causing a problem or is there something more going on?  Anyone know?

    I was just trying to place an order for a 410 and ran into this same problem too.  A quick search brought me here, but apparently no solution.  It must have been like this for at least a day already.  It'd really be nice if Lenovo could verify their sites when they make changes.
    One of reasons I started looking at the Thinkpads instead of the Dell I had been considering was problems with their site's support section (a couple months ago I was looking for contact details relating to my older desktop and I ran into 2 dead links).  Now I'm not so sure Lenovo is any better.  Is this the norm now?
    If you do contact them, I'd be interested in what they had to say.

My computer was "born on" Aug 13th, 2014, so today it's exactly only 2 months old. Since Windows 8 was so sluggishly slow i decided i was going to wipe the drive and install Linux. I had already been successful doing the exact same thing with a new HP laptop about 1 year ago.. it also was a Windows 8 preloaded machine, so i am very aware of the UEFI "Secure Boot" methodology and what it took to disable secure boot mode and enable legacy mode. I am happy to say that laptop ran Linux beautifully and without any issues. So now, i have the HP AIO 19-2113w machine preloaded with Windows 8.1, which has been wiped. I have converted the GPT to MBR and attempted to disable secure boot mode and enable "legacy mode". The Legacy mode option says i must first disable secure boot mode, which i've done several times. (When restarting after doing so, i get a prompt to type in the 4 digits on the screen and press enter, which i've done several times now). Going back into bios after doing this... i STILL can't get past the "You must disable secure boot mode before using this option... blah blah.". So i decided to look up if there were any lawsuits against Microsoft and/or HP reguarding UEFI bootloading issues, and there are. Right now i am sitting on a 2 month old computer with NO operating system and no recovery partition. The money i spent on this computer could have gone towards a different brand, such as an Asus which has never given me trouble. You guys need to contact me ASAP with a fix, or you'll get plenty of free negative advertising.
