N8 - Another disappointment?

Thought of giving Nokia another chance, so I replaced my N97 with a N8-00. Been playing with it for a week & I really loved the new N8.
Then yesterday I thought of doing a "Hard Reset" after installing & uninstalling quite a number of apps for the past week.
To my disappointment & frustration these problems popped up after "Hard Reset":
1) Ovi Store missing - couldn't even re-install after downloading the app from Ovi
2) Ovi Maps missing - re-installed from Betalabs
3) All Widgets were gone
4) Phone Lock Code was changed or corrupted - prior to this I've set the "Lock Phone On SIM Change" using the default "12345" code.
Re-installed Firmware via Ovi Suite with no success. How can the firmware from Ovi Software Update be different?
Nokia can you guys please not disappoint loyal user like me again, especially after the N97. I've been campaigning for the N8 to all of my friends who wanted to get the iPhone 4 or Samsung Galaxy S.
Please do something about it urgently!
Justify the faith that I still have in Nokia!

Hi synth_fg,
Reinstalled QT 4.6 & 4.7 but still Ovi Store refused to install.
However I'm baffled as to why the Phone Lock Code was changed or corrupted when the "3 Finger" reset was done, very curious.
Sent to Nokia Care & now everything is back to normal.
At least Nokia Care was very efficient in handling repairs & services, and its free.
Thumbs up for that Nokia.

  • N97 another disappointment - FREE MAPS

FREE MAPS - GREAT I THOUGHT
Oh no I have a n97, which doesnt even have a system memory to install it. Unless I go through the phone and start deleting out other stuff TO FREE UP SPACE FOR A INSTALL surely this is a joke. Once again the n97 fails at the starting gates. Its like its shoes are tied together!!!!
Sorry nokia, but you have no clue any more. Gone are the days when yo umade good phones. Stop making so many phones and just make a few good ones. Your product catalogue is full of so much stuff thats all the same.
All I want is Xenon flash, ARM quad (read decent) processor, Good amount of RAM and a decent touch screen.

    iPad 2 7.1.2
    iTunes 11.3 (54)
    iMac 27 in 10.9.4
Follow these steps to resolve your issue for iPads
Troubleshooting time is about 30 minutes - 1 hour
    Step 1
Unplug the usb 2.0 cord from the 27 in iMac and iPad 2 64 GB (or what ever version you have) Power down the iPad
    Step 2
Select your HD (Hard Drive) ( I did  this form my desk top)
Next select the applications folder, Next right click the iTunes icon and select show package contents, select Contents.
    1.     Next select info.plist, right click and select move to trash (A message should appear Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this)(Enter your password) Select ok, (This moves the file to the trash).
    2.     Next select pkginfo, right click and select move to trash. (A message should appear Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this)(Enter your password) Select ok, (This moves the file to the trash).
    3.     Next Select version.plist, right click and select move to trash (A message should appear Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this)(Enter your password) Select ok, (This moves the file to the trash).
    4.     Remove "iTunes" from your dock
    5.     From the Finder, choose Go > Go to folder.
    6. Type the following and then press Return:
/var/db/lockdown
    7. Choose View > as Icons.
    8. The Finder window should display one or more files with long alphanumeric file names.
    9. In the Finder, choose Edit > Select all. Then, choose File > Move to Trash. Enter an administrator password if prompted.
Note: Do not delete the Lockdown folder itself.
Delete only the files contained inside the Lockdown folder.
    Step 3
Follow the below steps to troubleshoot the issue.
    1. In Finder, click the Go menu and then choose Go to Folder. Enter the following location into the text field that appears:
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    2. Click Go.
    3. Locate the file "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig" and drag it to the Trash. (Do not move the similarly named "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist" file to the Trash.) If you DO NOT HAVE file "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig" I DELETED THE FOLLOWING (com.apple.usb.plist)
    4. In the Finder, locate iTunes in the Applications folder and drag it to the Trash. (This will not remove any of your iTunes media or your iTunes library.) You may be presented with the following message “iTunes” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS X.) Do not worry click ok and proceed troubleshooting
    5. Choose Go > Go to Folder. Enter the following location into the text field that appears:
/System/Library/Extensions

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    12. Click Go.
    Step 4
Goto your hard drive in the finder
    1.     Goto Library
    2.     Goto Launch Daemons
    3.     Throw this in the trash: com.ghughes.wifisync.root.plist and anything with the words iTunes
    4.     Goto Library
    5.     Goto Application Support
    6.     Throw this in the trash: Wi-Fi Sync (it's an entire folder) and anything with iTunes
    Step 5
(Before restart book mark the link command and D). Restart the Mac.
Download iTunes and reinstall it. After the install, connect the 2.0 usb device to the iPad 2 while the unit is still powered off, next connect the 2.0 usb cord to iTunes, power the iPad on. iTunes will read the device and ask to trust device, select continue. Backup the iPad device to the 27 in iMac.
    Step 6

  • Been Droid User for Years - Disappointed in Voice Search

Just moved to Droid 3.  Can't believe Voice Search dials +1 and VZW can't place the call.    I've never been an iPhone user so I don't know if the apps are better there,  but you'd think Verizon and Google would be on the same page re: voice command results presenting a number that can be called over the Verizon Network.  Sort of like getting power windows in a car and them not working in my car's model...but they work elsewhere.   Hard to believe......   Maybe the iPhone does the same thing???
Another disappointment:  Voice Command for Text Message always put the person's name in the body of the message  and not in the "TO" section...but that's clearly a Google issue.

    Hello chrisdr!
I'm sure the issues you are experiencing with your Droid 3 are annoying at times.  I am happy to assist.
After doing some research, not seeing either of these as known issues with this device.  I would like to suggest one last troubleshooting step to eliminate any possible software issues with the phone; hard reset.  Please ensure your data is backed up prior to performing the reset.
Please let us know how this works out for you.

  • Customer service Complaint!! Beware of hidden charges!!

I recently decided to install cable into two additional rooms in my apartment. I placed a call to Verizon and the rep quoted me $129.00  for the installation (new jacks and wiring included).  It did feel steep but I decided to go ahead and place the order. I received an e-mail later that day confirming the order with an additional charge of $89.99 "technician's visit". If I was paying $89.99 for the technician, what was the $129.00 for? Two jacks and 20ft of wire? When I called to complain a rep told me that she could not help me and that this is a matter for their  "elite" customer service team. She promised that one of their members will call me back in 10 minutes because they were all busy. Needless to say the "elite" never did call. Next day I called again and after discussing the same issue with another rep I was transferred to a supervisor who refused to take any responsibility for their actions. He was abrupt and rudely insisted that the charges were disclosed and refused to take any responsibility for their elite team not calling me back!
I totally agree with another disappointed customer who posted a similar message. I don't know who does their customer service training but it is useless! Customer service aims to keep customers satisfied and not to have them look for services elsewhere!

    Hi,
    i wonder:

That is incorrect.  The new version of TVSU was released today, and reports are coming in on the TVT board that it's working fine.

  • Why I left Windows Phone

So yesterday I got my Samsung Galaxy S3. It is a great phone, but I felt kind of bummed out because the device I replaced was my HTC Trophy, a Windows phone. This ended my 1 year plus use of the Windows Phone OS and sent me back to Android once again. Why? There were a few reasons for this, I just wanted to name a few.
    1. Hardware - Anyone who jumped in on Windows Phone's only offering to Verizon customers at the time knew that the hardware was below par of most Android devices offered at the time. Lack of SD card and display made it a mediocre choice, but the new OS was intriguing enough to draw me in. I had an Xperia Play (another disappointing phone Sony)  and decided to trade it for my Trophy. Though the screen and camera were not on par with Sony's offering, I really wanted to give it a try. Being a Zune HD user made the transition pretty easy & the interface was beautiful. Again, hardware was lacking, but driven by an innovating OS. New hardware specs are pretty much on par with recent Android devices, but that cannot make up for....
    2. Software - I found my Trophy had a few hiccups once in a while. Nothing too bad, but apps would sometimes force close or not even open at all. There was a single upgrade that could not be done OTA, but had to be hooked up to Zune to download and install. This was not too much of a issue at first, but why no OTA over at least WiFi? It would come to be a non issue since the Trophy was the ******* child of Verizon, put in a room somewhere; forgotten about and left to just sit there with no updates whatsoever. After a while, I got frustrated and turned to XDA for custom builds. One was a 7.8 build which made the OS slightly more appealing, but still had OS issues with apps. Speaking of.....
    3. Apps & Marketplace - This was the major flaw with WP. No apps. Sure there were a few offerings, but nothing compared to iOS or Android. I know WP is newer to the market and had claimed a huge increase in apps, but from what I could see, nothing worth bragging about. One example was Draw Something. This game had come and gone, gone even further, and then was given life on WP, well sort of given life. It was buggy, crashed constantly, and finding someone to play with was hardly worth the effort. Other games like Mini Squadron and Final Fantasy ran perfect and provided a lot of entertainment. Oh, Physibricks was also a great one! Other apps were nothing more than web page conversions. The entire time I used my phone I only had good experiences with the Engadget app (when using 3G, WiFi was slower for some reason) and the Zune software, which was the best integrated music software ever imo. Songs loaded fast and the huge marketplace made it easy to get any song you wanted. This is the one feature I really loved about WP. I could be somewhere, hear a song, hit the search button and select music. Not only would it find the song, it would take me to the market to download it though my ZunePass. Spotify, Pandora, IHeartRadio, none of these services could hold a match to Zune Pass on WP. This is the only thing I will miss on Android, well, until Xbox music has it App up and running, and if it is as nice as its WP counterpart.
Microsoft, you want to sell devices, then invest in the developers like you did with Xbox. You got Nokia which was an awesome start, but you knew the market you were getting into and knew what your competitors had out there. You should have gone in stronger than this. Offer developers 100% of their profits, 1 year of  Xbox music free with new device, $0.99 app submit fee, free development software, big incentives for developers to bring apps over from other OS's, $2.99 for Angry Birds?, bring more of your Xbox live titles to mobile,  and tap your home developers (XDA!) to see what you could do to bring customers. Start off big and work with handset developers and get their involvement. Its not too late to get things fixed, but to get me to come back to Windows phone and some others to leave iOS and Android, you need to get better fast or go the route of Kin.

You are right, to each their own.
I agree, the UI and the OS are good, but lacking in what is offered by the other two major OS's. Each one has their good and bad, but some more than others. You are right about low end options. I do like the 8X a lot, but after using other hardware besides HTC, I decided to give Samsung a try. The new WP8 hardware has started to look a lot more appealing, even in more ways than the normal Android offerings, but performance is still on par with what handset creators have been pushing on Android 6 months earlier.Dual Core processor, good GPU, MicroSD card slot, 4G, HD display. These are stats you could find in most Android devices a year ago. Now, does Windows phone need to surpass these stats? Not really, but its nice to have a somewhat future proof device that won't be obsolete 3-6 months after you get it with no chances of updating (WP7 users feel me on this). Microsoft set a standard HW requirement for WP7 and guess what, hardware manufactures stuck with it. Why? Because MS didn't allow a lot of the features that other phones had, weak strategy. Don't release behind the curve software if its not on par with your competition because you get behind the curve hardware to run it.
Weak apps is a definite description I still stand by. MS made a huge deal about app requirements and efforts to get developers to create apps that fit well into the WP7 environment. I saw very little of this if any. Even top name apps are buggy at best (ESPN, CNN, LinkedIn). I've used these apps on iOS and Android and the quality far exceeds those on WP. I don't need a lot of apps, just ones that are useful and functional for my everyday personal and professional use. If I can't depend of developers of major apps to provide high quality apps for a high quality OS, then what is the use? I can tell you there were many productive apps on my Android phones that I could not find on WP. Now, this could be because of WP7/8 app compatibility, but could not be sure.
Again, I wish I could had been more excited about WP8, but from my WP7 use, I could not trust entering into a 2 year contract with another unproven OS. I hope WP8 has majorly improved over its predecessor so I will be able to go back to a MS product, but until then, I'd feel better investing in a proven OS.

  • Problems installing Photoshop CS2 on iMac

I have my brand new iMac 20" Intel Core Duo, and I have recently purchased Photoshop CS2 and I can not get it to install. I saw in some places about the SU 2006-003 patch, but I have not installed that. I also saw about VC2 in the startup items, but that is not on my hard drive.
The problem that I am having is that it gets so far into the Running Installer Script and then everything just freezes. I'm not sure what could be wrong.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Todd

    Hi all,
I have had some luck with CS2 and my iMac Intel. But this is only after i spent a week of trouble shooting. A WEEK, on a brand new computer?... this to me is laughable. I am a die-hard Mac user but i have to say i am thouroughly disappointed in my new iMac. After 6 great years on my reliable G4 550Mhz 768RAM i upgraded to an iMac Intel and I just don't see the stability that i used to have with my G4.
Anyway, on the iMac, I did ALL the updates (including the security update and QT 7.1) and was running os x 10.4.6 and when i tried to install CS2, when i got to the second disc, installation froze, computer froze and i had to force a shutdown with the power button. When restarting, the iMac booted to the desktop, but nothing else loaded (no dock, no finder bar at the top, and no desktop icons; mouse didn't function as well) Called AppleCare and ended up having to trash my preferences and trash all that was installed by CS2. Well, that got my iMac working again but was nervous about trying to install CS2 again. Reading somewhere on these boards i came across a thread that mentioned installing Stuffit Expander, saying that some files on the installation discs needed decompression and since stuffit didn't come with OS X 10.4.6 i went ahead and downloaded the free stuffit expander. Heck at that point, i was ready to try anything. After installing stuffit, i tried installing CS2 again and this time the installation did work but seemed to freeze at the end. No message saying installation was succesful, just froze after CS2 finished installing from disc 4. I force restarted with the power button again, but this time the desktop, icons, mouse and dock were working as normal. I was able to run illustrator, photoshop, indesign, golive, bridge and acrobat pro simultaneously, but i wasn't doing any "real" graphics work. I do notice a lag when switching between apps. For example when i switch from illustrator to photoshop, it takes a few seconds for all the tool bars and palettes to load. I should also mention i have 1 gig of RAM. Read somewhere it's better to have 2 gigs, but come on... 2 gigs of RAM just to have functioning software? (another disappointing work around) Not sure if stuffit helped, or just a coincidence. I'm no expert so I'm wondering if anyone else tried that and had success like i did.
I am sorry about this rant, but you figure if you pay so much for a computer, that it should work correctly and that it was tested realistically for bugs. Not with a supercomputer with infinate RAM. I know i bought an apple, but this computer is running like a lemon and to be honest, i'm nervous about installing any updates or additional applications. Being a freelance designer, i don't have the option of pushing back deadlines... and the troubleshooting and time on-hold that i have to waste is crippling my workflow and losing clients for me. Wondering if i would be able to exchange my iMac for a G5 PowerMac with no restocking fees. I have no problem paying the difference in price between the machines but refuse to pay restocking fee for a machine that simply does not cut it.
Well, hope everyone else has luck and let me and the discussions boards know if the stuffit thing is a fix, workaround, or just coincidence and i got lucky installing CS2
    good luck to all

  • Still can't add aliases in iCloud email

I've had my icloud.com email address working since the end of September.  I tried to add an alias in the beginning.  It didn't work.  The error message was the alias could not be saved at this time.  After seeing many questions and answers on this forum regarding this issue, I decided to wait for the 'roll out' to be completed, the addresses 'updated', and what-have-you.  I still attempted to add an alias every now and then.  Same error message every time.  I tried to add from different browsers, different computers, even tried to flood it with persistent clickings.  Nothing.  During this time, my icloud email has functioned well, mostly.  It's been a month and half, and I'm starting to think this may never get resolved.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Paul
The 5MP is connected to the G4 and G3 via an Ansante Bridge and ethernet hub. The Epson S P 1200 is conected to the G4 by USB (powered hub) and to the G3 by serial cable. All was working well from either computer to either printer til recently ( I think when I updated to 10.4.6)
The printers disappeared from the list and when I try to add either printer I get "An error has arisen whilst trying to add the printer - server-error-service-unavailable"
The G4 sees the printers (puts them in the printers to add list and even pings the 5MP for info (light flashes) but won't add either
I juat have the G4, G3, an old 7220/200, 5MP, ansante bridge and 8 port hub on the mini network. Haven't tried printing from the 7200 (on 8.6) but suspect it will be OK.
Hope you can help. G3 still prints OK to either printer and can mount G4 for sharing (but G4 can't mount G3 for sharing - but that's another disappointing result of a previous upgrade)

  • Lightroom 5.4, 5.5 and now 5.6 develop module not processing changes made on pictures

Has anyone come across this annoying bug from Lightroom yet? if so how did you solve it, workaround also welcome, it's doing my head in now. Been here for weeks now with all jobs sitting on my desk waiting to be processed but lightroom NOT working as it should
Version 5.4 never had this sort of issue and when upgraded to 5.5 all seemed to work fine up to 3 weeks ago when i though my PC was the culprit, uninstalled - deleted reg keys and clean registry hives from any LR entries yielded NOTHING upgraded to 5.6 same completed the same tasks on two other laptop with Win 7 and Win 8 NOTHING.
I'm  on Windows 8.1 any similar photo editing tools will be appreciated, getting fed up with these dudes now.

Thank you for reply Rikk Flohr and sorry if had not been clearer enough.
I have been experiencing for more than a month now, I was hoping the latest V5.6 will nurse for me but instead another disappointment.
    Scenario:
    - I upload pictures into Lr and click on Develop tab.
    - I make some extreme exposure/contrast/etc adjustments (to the left or right) nothing happens on picture in the main window but instead to the one in the timeline section
    Troubleshooting do so far:
    - Uninstalling and cleaning the registry then reinstalling (on more than one PC)
    - Uninstalling V5.6 and installing earlier versions 5.5 then 5.4 no yield.
    - Try the suggested link (Resetting (or 'Trashing') the Lightroom Preferences file - Lightroom Forums) advise, same result.
I'm really HOPING you guys can fix this issue as I have jobs piling up in my hard drive to be processed on the daily basis.
Will appreciate if you could advise on all directories to look at when clearing Lr registry entries on both hives of the PC, I'm on Windows 8.1 x64 with all the latest updates

  • Still can't add printers in 10.4.7

I've tried everything suggested in discussions including resetting printer system, fixing permissions and downloading & installing CUPS 1.2.2 but still same error adding printers.
Both printers work fine over same network from Powerbook G3 running OS 9.2
Should I reset printing & permissions after installing CUPS 1.2.2?
I re-downloaded & installed 10.4.7 again but still same problem. Should I reinstall CUPS 1.2.2 (latest version on their site, or should I use 1.2.1?) and do I need to reset printing system & repair permisions again? In what order do I do these?
    What next?
    Help please, I'm desparate!

  • No Airdrop on my iMac

Apparently, as of Yosemite it should be possible to use Airdrop on an iMac as well and it should be as simple as opening your Finder and selecting Airdrop from the Go menu.
I am sad to note that there is no Airdrop listed in the Go menu (or elsewhere in the Finder).
Along with the promised functionality of being able to (answer the) phone via my iMac, the System Preferences (Notification Center, applications that I do not want to give notifications; screensaver randomly reverting back to the default one), this is yet another disappointment with Yosemite.
Any thoughts on how to get Airdrop to work would be appreciated. The Notification Center settings problem seems to be a bug that others have as well and is covered in a different post.

Confirming that this is just "planned ageing", I found an article that explains how one can enable Airdrop on older Macs, provided they run on Lion or higher. This is what it says (as I cannot copy in the link without getting an error message):
    Launch Terminal, found in /Applications/Utilities/
Paste in the following defaults command:
    defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1
Hit Return, then on a new line in the Terminal type the following command to relaunch the Finder:
    killall Finder
Exit out of Terminal if you want, and launch any Finder window to discover the AirDrop icon
I tried that, and indeed I am now getting the Airdrop icon in my Finder. Next step is to see how it works :-)

  • M73 Mini tower Graphics upgrade

    Hi all,
How viable is it to upgrade the graphics card of the M73 Mini Tower version? I may want to do this at some point in the future. I will probably install a Radeon HD 7750. The M73 comes with a 280W PSU. It seems that computer hardware enthusiasts on internet forums recommend a PSU of well over 300W to use a dedicated graphics card.
Is it viable? For that matter, how does the M73 handle Lenovo's available GPU options anyway (eg Nvidia GT 620 and Radeon HD 8570)? Does it have trouble supplying enough power?
If the PSU is in fact underpowered, can it be upgraded later if required? eg can you put in another brand of PSU with higher wattage?
    Thanks.

I got an HD8570 in the new M93p purcahsed recently.  I believe it uses 50W or less.
Fortunately the HD8570 does not require additional PCIe power, which would be impossible anyway since the M93p also has that little 280W PSU which does not include any 75W PCIe power cables to go to high-end graphics cards.
Unfortunately, the HD8570 from Lenovo is a 1/2-size version, and only has a VGA and HDMI connector on it. No DVI, and no DP.  So connecting it to your monitor requires considering cable or adapter requirements coming rom the only digital connection on the 1/2-size card which is HDMI.  This is a real shame, as the mini-tower cases (for my M93p) holds full-size cards.  So they could have used a full-size HD8570 with all four connectors on it as the AMD site shows this card available with.
Also, the Lenovo OEM HD8570 only has DDR3 memory, rather than DDR5.  Another disappointment.
I think the IdeaCenter K450 machine has the HD8670 as an option, and I think that has DDR5 memory... and also sucks up 75W (but probably again does not require external PCIe power which again would not be available with the same dinky PSU in the K450).

  • Avchd camcorders video quality

I have read that avchd camcorders often suffer from a sort of visual stuttering when doing a pan or tilt, especially at their highest quality settings.
Does anyone with these camcorders see this effect in filmed material?
I am interested in getting a good consumer level camcorder that uses memory cards rather than tape, hard drives or dvds, and has manual exposure and audio level controls and hopefully 3 sensors rather than one.
But if these camcorders are going to be problematic in achieving top quality video then it might be better to go for another type format.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi there,
Not sure if you bought anything yet, this post is a bit old, but I own the Panasonic HDC-SD100 and have mixed feelings about it...
Regarding the stutter: I experienced this a while back, and investigated it quite thoroughly, speaking at length with somebody at Panasonic as well as doing some research online. Panasonic said that AVCHD support in FCP just wasn't that great... that it was buggy. The fact that the stutter was eliminated when I transcoded the files via Voltaic HD (i.e. outside of Final Cut), and that the footage played back on-camera didn't have a stutter, indicated that it was some kind of FCP log and transfer issue.
I should note, by the way, that I no longer experience this problem in FCP, so maybe in one of the recent software patches they beefed up their support for AVCHD. Stuttering no longer a problem.
The HDC-SD100: It's tiny, which I love. I'm filming people on the street and in the hood, and I need to be low-key. Anything bigger draws too much attention.
LOW LIGHT: the low-light performance is awful. Really. You get these ghosty trails when the sun is just beginning to go down... and forget about indoors. It's really very bad, unless you have a bunch of assistants and lights. I believe this has to do with sensor size...
MANUAL CONTROLS: another disappointment, at least for me. I mean I know I can't have everything I want, but I thought that having a focus ring would allow me to smoothly adjust iris/focus/zoom, but when you turn it, whatever you have the ring set to adjust bumps up or down in INCREMENTS, just like it would if you were pushing a button.
    Hmmm....

  • Please improve pen tool path closing behaviour

I am annoyed by losing the first point’s backwards bezier handle when closing a path with the Pen Tool.
This seems disrespectful to users who may have years of experience with vector graphics programs and therefore quite possibly set the first point’s bezier handles just as they want them to be.
Also the subject of this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3619783#3619783
The same seems to apply when picking up an open path – just because one has interrupted creation of a path does not mean the end points’ bezier handle should be disregarded on resuming adding points to that path.
Luckily the Photoshop team has not picked those … behaviours for their Path creation tools.

Another Illustrator upgrade, another disappointment …
