N8 self restarts

Hi,
I have an N8 for 4 days and it restarts by itself.
I don't know if this is an issue or not, because I had a N95 before and it was freezing from time to time, once every 2 months, but hey, even Windows freezes sometimes.
I could play game on it for hours. It never restarted during playing games.
I play RoboDef (strategy) for more than 4 hours, Angry Birds for 3 hours, Sky Force for 2-3 hours, as I said, no problem, no restart during games.
However my N8 restarts during the night, or even in my jacket pocket, I can hear sometimes Nokia tune for starting up, other times is restarting silently. I am leaving one application open to monitor if it had restart, then the application is gone.
Today my N8 restarted once.
Yesterday it restarted 2 times. Two days before the same.
I was reading about the problems with N8 turning dead and it is simply scary.
My question is:
Is my N8 a defective unit, or the restart from time to time just happened?
I shouldn't worry and go to ask for my money back from the store in the first 7 days?

Hi, don't looze time with hard reset or else.
This is a hardware problem. I had exactly the same, mine did restart 2 or 3 times a day, sometime more, very randomly at any time (during the night, in my pocket, ....)
I had the latest software and firmware update from nokia, I tried Hard reset + format mass memory + remove sim card + remove storage card, but the probleme was still there.
So I gave it to a Nokia Care Center and now I am praying for it to be repaired.
SO.
If you bought it lesse than 7 days (depends on your country), you can ask for a replacement and push your luck.
if more than 7 days, you will have to have it repaired by nokia (3 weeks minimums ...) and you will hope that they find the cure ....
or you may still choose to go for android and be quiet

About the computer: early 2008 Mac Pro dual 2.8, 4GB stock ram, OS 10.6.7. Additional hardware includes: aftermarket ATI HD3870 (to replace failed stock card), Black Magic Decklink I/O; 1TB OSX HDD, 320GB Windows 7 HDD and 2x 1.5TB storage drives in RAID 0; Pioneer BD burner.
When booting from cold (an recently when waking from sleep) computer self-restarts at any point from powering until running about 10 minutes. Once the computer has been on from more than 10 minutes restarting does not occur, expect when waking from extended sleep. Typically, when booting from cold, the computer will boot full and the OS (OSX or Windows) will run for several minute. The computer then restarts. Following the first restart, subsequent restarts generally occur before the OS is fully loaded, but the exact timing varies (almost always following the "chime"). The process continues about 10 minutes or so until eventually the computer boots fully and stays on. Incidentally, occasionally--but not typically--the fans kick on high when starting the computer cold.
My suspicion is this is indicative of a power supply starting to fail. But I'd like to rule out other, more easily remedied possibilities first. So far I have tried resetting SMU and PRAM/NVRAM and as well as booting with the windows hard drive and blueray drive removed without success. I set the computer to boot in Verbose but cannot see any indication of what's wrong; previous shutdown cause reporting "0".
Any suggestion--even a way to test the power supply--greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that recent gave me similar problems.
When in Leopard or Windows XP, computer would randomly shutdown completely. Typically I was surfing the web and seemed to happen more often when watch Youtube videos.
Started off happening once in a while and then computer was unusable as it would not complete the boot up in to either OS. When I would power up after a shutdown, light would come on and I would hear "TaDa" and could hear drive activity----then sometimes it would just cycle with repeat attempts as noted by another "TaDa". If I was really patient, it would sometime boot into stable configuration only to have computer just have another hard shutdown after a few minutes.
Did a lot of internet searching and I though it was the logic board or power supply. Did SMC rest, PRAM reset. Checked the DIAG_LEDS. Figured it hard to be a hardware problem as issue was present in Mac OSX and XP.
Ultimately caved in and took computer to the Apple Store---they ran diagnostics. Diagnostics said one memory riser card was failing---replaced it for $50. Got home---same problem.
Back to Apple Store for a week. They replaced the second memory riser card and all is better now. Was not logic board or PS.
Computer is fine except can no longer get the Startup Manager screen to come up after holding OPTION key to select which OS (Leopard or XP) to boot into.
Hence the reason I came to the Apple Discussion board. Saw your problem and though I would add my recent experience.
I will be adding my current issue under a new thread.
You might try seeing if the problem occurs in OSX and Windows---if so---seems to indicate it is hardware and not software.
Good Luck.
Good Luck

• After upgrade to EMET v4.1 and reboot EMET_Agent didn't self-restarted but now double clicking its icon shows error "Admin privileges are required"

Hello all,
after on my Windows XP SP3 test client I upgraded to EMET v4.1 (from v4.0) and rebooted I noticed the following:
- EMET_Agent didn't self-restarted so I had to run it manually (and I noticed that after it started it also self-added an undocumented --NoRestart command line option),
- now that its icon is already in SysTray (Notification Area) the error "Admin privileges are required" appears whenever I double click on it or select 'Open EMET', so in case of need I can run EMET_GUI.exe only manually.
Is all this normal and expected or there can be any other possibly known way to avoid or definitely fix both effects ?
P.S. If to better show effects also providing any bitmap should be needed, then please just let me know.
Thanks in advance for any helpful reply or suggestion. Regards.
Rob

Hello everyone again,
I'm updating this post to ensure anyone interested may know how to definitely solve this issue.
After verifying that same annoying issue was also found with EMET 4.1 update 1 (valid for its 1st 4/30/2014 release, and verified also with
current and latest 5/29/2014 version) I recently made some little more investigation and after noticing its weird command line (reported by Process Explorer) simply as :
--NoRestart
I simply ensured to manually force same option to be properly set at startup, and that's it. :-D
So here you are quick updated versions of :
- EMET41NotificationFix.reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"EMET Agent"="\"C:\\Program Files\\EMET 4.1\\EMET_Agent.exe\" --NoRestart"
- EMET41upd1NotificationFix.reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"EMET 4.1 Update 1 Agent"="\"C:\\Program Files\\EMET 4.1\\EMET_Agent.exe\" --NoRestart"
I hope this helps (and if it does then please be kind and vote this post as useful... ;-) ) while to some forum moderator I'm asking to kindly mark this post as Answer.
P.S. It's just a pity that latest current version of EMET 4.1.1 (aka 4.1 update 1) cannot easily install over its 1st release (its setup suggest to 1st remove existing version), anyway I've found a tricky (hacked) way to overcome this limitation while also
avoiding reboot so in future I'll consider to share it publicly in a different discussion.
Regards
Rob

• Finder self-restarts

My finder self-restarts, when i push the right button on my mighty-mouse 4 or 5 times. And it doesn't matter in what time and in what place i push it. It may be a creation of new folder on desktop or seein properties of file.. Just when i push fifth time - it self-restart. What can i do? In my re:Store tells, that it is a unique problem and they didn't know what to do. Please, help

If there is an item named StuffitCM in either Contextual Menu Items folder, move it out of that folder. Otherwise, move items out one at a time until you find the one responsible for the crash.

I upgraded to 10.4.5, but the system log of the restart still has the family issues
the machines is a dual 2.0 G5 with 4 gigs of ram, 2 firewire externals, a fire wire 800 card, a lacie s2s, and an iternal raid, plus an extra ethernet card

I don't have enough info to even venture a guess. Is anything else having problems? Is there any other 3rd party hardware? Have drivers been installed/deinstalled/updated? Are there any related messages while the machine is running, or only at boot?

• MacBookPro self-restarting when on battery, why?

I was using my mid 2010 13" MacBookpro to take notes at a business seminar.
They had given us a cd so, since I expected it to last 5-6 hrs I decided to close the lid to conserve the battery after I had been taking notes in Pages for a half hour or more. But then all of a sudden I heard the restart chime. I opened it up & it had restarted on it a own. There was an error message saying it had shut down because of a problem.
As I recall, I logged in & opened Pages & immediately saved a file for notes since the previous notes apparently were lost since I had not yet saved them. I had thought that it auto saved even if the document had not been saved. But then I guess it must have again reset on its own a couple of times so I gave up trying to use it. So I decided to just give up & to shut it down. I 1st tried to shut it down using the button at the bottom of the ML log in screen.
It just restarted, rather than shutting down. So then I logged in & after it came up I shut it down & after it shut down I put it away in the case & set it on the ground by my chair. But then it again restarted & did so multiple times.
I noted that battery power was at 87% at the time of the 1st restart & then about 85% after that restart. After that I was just trying to ignore it & get on w taking notes by hand.
It continued to restart. A number more times. Several hours later I got home. Just walking from the car to my front door I heard the start up 3x in quick succession this while it was in its InCase carrying case w shoulder strap & immediately hooked up to power & logged in. But the bar at the top did not come up, although the one at the bottom was there when I moused over.
So I clicked on finder & eventually located & opened Time Machine. But that went what I wanted so finally about then the top bar came up & I could use the Time Machine icon to tell it to back up now. Got it backed up. Then it was time to go some ace before going to the Genius Bar appt I had set up using the Apple Store app on my iPhone 4S.
They have had it since late Sat afternoon & have been unable to replicate the problem.
I just realized that I forgot to tell them about the error message when it restarted that it had shut down because of a problem.
I would hope that the Geniuses should be able to figure out that there may have been such a message, but maybe not.
& it's my impression that this maybe should have generated a log of the problem that caused it to shut down.
But maybe I'm wrong on that. I hope not.
Anyway, I'm supposed to come pick it up but since they couldn't replicate it they didn't have anything to fix so I was w out my MacBookPro for 3 days w out anything being fixed.
I know that intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose & fix but does anyone have any suggestions?
I am remembering that a couple of different store people mentioned they had heard about this happening but I neglected to ask about the cause assuming it was maybe a known issue.
Am I correct in thinking that there should have been logs made of what caused it to shutdown & restart?
A bit frustrated by this. & my AppleCare runs out in about a mo although they said it was documented as happening before it ran out so it would be covered.
Again any help would be appreciated. I hope this is typed correctly. I'm typing it on my iPhone 4S as that's all I have to access the Internet at the moment.

Well in 2011 they tried archive & install & then erase & install a couple of times. Nothing showed up. I was running Windows 7 in Bootcamp & then using that as a virtual machine in Parallels 5. I had proprietary co software that I needed to run in Windows at that time. I suspect that it could have been a conflict related to that especially the proprietary software. It seems that they have homegrown programmers who may use non-standard ways of doing things.
At least that is my guess.
Now we are using web based stuff so I don't really need Windows much any more.
But since I have it & since Parallels made an upgrade offer I upgraded to it at the time I upgraded to Mountain Lion which was not that long ago. So they suggested that I just use the vm rather than Bootcamp so I removed the Bootcamp partition before Installing Mountain Lion.
& oh yeah. Just remembered that ML didn't install the 1st try. Went all the way to 1 min left & it got stuck there-- for 45 min +. So finally restarted & then it started the installation all over again & finished ok that time.
But the earlier hardware replacements were done at the same time & then the sleep sensor for when the lid was closed was replaced right after as they noticed the problem when they were giving it back to me. So that was done in about early April 2011. The track pad had had a dead spot for a long time but I had thought I was doing something wrong so didn't report it until recently nth at time they quickly diagnosed it & a few hours later said it was done.
The guy I spoke to earlier said he thought it was software. I got the impression that he thought I was trying to get them to replace hardware. No I just want it to work right whether it hardware or software.

• Self-Restarting iPod

My 30GB iPod keeps restarting by itself at random times. It will do it while a song is being played (whether or not the iPod is on hold), sometimes it will restart itself if the Next Song button is clicked, and sometimes it will do it at the end of an album or playlist. What should I do to fix this, or is it something I can't do on my own?

Yes I am having the same problems! And with the same music too! (Ben Folds--Way To Normal)
After Ben folds though,I bought another new album, and it is having the same problem... (James Morrison--Songs for You, Truths for Me [just incase anyone was intersted or if it makes a difference]) I guess I will have to write to customer service like you did, and hopefully I'll no longer have this problem. It's getting extremely frustrating
And yes, like you, it hasn't happened before I downloaded itunes 8.

• OC4J self restarting on heavy load.

Hello,
I'm running Web app written in JDev 10gR2 on iAS 10gR2. On heavy load (2000 concurrent users) i have such symptom:
I got load on my machine about 50, then 100, then 200 then even 300 (!). And of course my oc4j processes restart themselves (or by opmn - I know it from opmn.log).
Is it normal (such load)?
WebApp is quite simple (my sample "killing" load is to view 3 pages in rotation - WebApp/page1.do, page2.do, page3.do, each page shows some content from db but it is extremely simple query and DB is not a problem).
I'm running it on new server with 2x 6-core Xeon 3.46GHz and 96Gig of RAM, storage is on SAN FC network (os is OEL5).
Or maybe my problem is in bad configuration of oc4j - in my case: Xmx3500M, 20 processes.
I've tried to reduce num. of processes, but it was even worse - oc4j restarted very often.

Have you any idea what is wrong? (Of course WebApp itself is unchangeable)

Hello Jan,
Unfortunately not, as Oracle is leaving once again in the dark here....
They catch the exceptinon themselves , and then throw another one of their great errors :
2007-09-24 09:14:49.849 ERROR OWS-04046 Caught exception while handling request: java.lang.NullPointerException java.lang.NullPointerException
My guess is that some code is not threadsafe , so the xml file is read simultaneous by different threads, probably trying to create some singlton object containing the xml data. But even when i synchronise the method, the problem still remains...

• N97 self-restarting V2.1

this morning i updated from V20 to V21 and my phone just restated itself... so obviously the version did not fix this bug
anybody has any ideas...???

Well, the n97 is a touchy device which seems to have a lot of akward issues. If the files are in the musicfolder and you use your musicplayer or trie to accsess the files in some way, it may cause troubles...But when I change the language to english on my n97 (which contains nothing that should trouble the device), it still freezes, reboots etc.
But things that are not made for the n97, should not be in it's memory
What 3rd party musicplayer are u using? It could be some of your apps rather than the files...

• Self restarting when keyboard opens - V41.2.010 - ...

My keyboard has problem which is when I want to type q,w,e,...,p it appears only numbers from 1 to 0 and I can type capital letter if I want to type q or w or e ... Etc. And others keys has same problem. (solved)
Another problem is sometime when I open the keyboard my Nokia C6-00 starts by itself, it happened at least twice after the update.
It happened after I updated to version V41.2.010 and the first problem I don't remember when it starts but I think it starts after the update too.

There is no thing like update 41.2.010 for nokia C6-00
Check again your software version or think before posting.

• Random restarts and unable to make/receive calls o...

Okay...has anyone else experienced this problem before.
No problems with all the regular app functions, speed, sound and everything all normal. Except that no calls can come in or out. When calling out, it will show the whole dialing screen, but there will be no dial tone and sometimes the call duration timer will start but i wont be able to hear anything. When someone tries to call in they get the same tone as if the phone is off, and I won't receive any message of a missed call or anything of that sort. I check cell reception, full bars, My Maxis In my case, all seems to be normal.
Only way to solve this is to restart the phone. Then everything returns to normal, calls in and out fine.
Happens to me maybe once a month...
also random self restarts...I might be listening to music while travelling on the LRT and then it will just vibrate and restart. Or at work its just on the table and then it just short vibrate and restart itself...
one more issue is that some of the tiles on my homescreen don't load immediately and lag for 1-2 seconds before the image shows. This happens when I am scrolling up or down and all I see instead of the live tiles are blank tiles of the color I set it to. This only started happening after the tango update. i doubt this is caused by the phone and instead by the software. it does not affect the respective apps or anything else.
Just informing Nokia of these issues with my lumia 710... I will try a hard reset soon to see if this will solve the problems for good.

What phone?
What zip code?
What have you tried to troubleshoot the problem?
Have you powered it down and restarted?
More information would be helpful.

• Mac Mini Late 2011 keeps restarting after shutdown.

Hi, I had my Mac Mini Late 2011 installed with Mountain Lion yesterday (25 July 2012). The installation was successful but I cannot shut it down.
When I shutdown, the system goes down and the display goes black, but after 3 seconds it starts up again showing the message that the Mac is restarting because there was a problem and ask me to push a key on keyboard to continue or wait for 40 seconds and the system will automatically continue.
This happens repeatedly. It does not shutdown.
So I decide to do the clean install the Mountain Lion but it does not solve the problem.
Please help.
Supong

I have my problem solved now.
My case, the Mac Mini mid 2011 and the Mountain Lion. I tried clean install the ML with no migration but this did not solve the problem.
"evanluke" posted in another thread (thread no.19044865 https://discussions.apple.com/message/19044865?tstart=0#19044865?tstart=0 ) that when he read the system report, it showed system panic event related to graphic driver. He is using the Mac Pro so it is not difficult for him to remove the relevant hardware.
But for me, the Mini, I have to wait for the mercy from Apple.
So, I tried changing my monitor from HDMI to VGA using the DVI to VGA cable connecting to another monitor port.
The display was ok though I could not set proper resolution. Then I switched back to HDMI, ** leaving the DVI connect to VGA monitor **, then shut Mini down. it went down properly with no self-restarting.
I started up the Mini and shut it don again and again, no restart happened.
I want to know what if I remove the VGA connection, it did self-restart again.
Reconnecting the VGA, no self-reboot.
I must leave DVI to VGA connect to both end to stop self-reboot problem until Apple realize the problem and post the update.

• N97 keeps restarting itself and turning itself off...

Hi everyone,
A few months ago I bought an N97 from England and I have some very annoying bugs and a few questions I’d like to ask.
First of all, the phone keeps restarting itself (it is now up to 5 times a day if not more!!!), and at night it even turns itself off (I mean I wake up in the morning and the phone is off).
The other bug is that I cannot exit applications through the “open apps” menu (which is accessed by long-pressing the menu button). When I try to exit an application through there the phone crashes.
I did hard reset, soft reset, formatted E drive (each of those several times btw) and none of this helped. I took it to the nokia care center (the only one in Israel BTW!) and they said that they’ve never heard of those problems and it shouldn’t happen, so they reinstalled my firmware. After that didn’t work, I came back to them and they tried reinstalling the firmware again (they thought something maybe went wrong last time) and that didn’t work either. So I gave them my phone and they had it for 2 weeks during which they tried solving the problem themselves (not sure If that’s true) and after they failed, they sent it to the nokia factory\manufacturer lab in Israel (or at least that’s what they told me). In the first few days everything seemed ok and the phone did not restart itself (that menu bug was still happening) but after less than a week the phone restarted itself again. So I called them and they said it’s probably a bug in the V20 software and they reported it to nokia head quarters in Finland (yeah right…). Anyways… the “restarting itself” bug frequency was decreased substantially for a while, but now it’s back to restarting itself several times a day and turning itself completely off at night (it even happened to me during the day once or twice already-which never happened before).
I’ve read that hundreds (if not thousands) of other N97 owners have those problems too but I couldn’t find a solution. Anyone have any ideas???
Now… during my search in different forums I searched the one in the nokia Israel website and I accidently came across a replay that said that the “exit an app through the open app menu” bug only happens when the phone language is set to Hebrew! And guess what?! HES RIGHT! I changed the language of my phone to English and I have successfully exited the music player through the “open app” menu without the phone crashing! WHAT THE FU** IS GOING ON?! As I said, I’ve came across many other users who have this bug and they obviously don’t have Hebrew on their phone. How does that make any sense?!. Although I have no problem with English I’m more comfortable with my phone language being set to Hebrew since I got used to the buttons locations and now they are all “backwards” which is really annoying! (for example just now I wanted to put a call on loudspeaker but hung up because the 2 buttons have now switched sides).
Anybody knows anything about those bugs and\or how to fix them?!
Now… I would like to ask something:
I’ve noticed that my C drive only has 35MB of free memory. So I went into “memory details” and I see that 12MB is taken by “SIS applications” and 25MB (!!!) is taken by “other files”. I should mention that I put all my files and install all my apps on the E drive when given the choice (only apps from ovi store don’t give you that choice).
Is there any way I can see which applications and files (if it’s even possible for individual files) are installed on C so I can delete some of them? When I go to “phone memory” through “file manager” and I manually open all the folders there (games, images, installed files, nokia, other, sound files and all those), they are all empty. I mean I have a few files on C but they are some sort of text files and they weigh pretty much nothing… most of the folders are completely empty (some have 1 or 2 of those text files). Please help me!
Since I’m already posting this message, anybody knows anything about V21?! Ive read about some update that’s coming out on the 28th, but when I asked nokia care about V21 they said they don’t know anything about it. Anybody has any information regarding V21?
Thank you!

1. Did this start shortly after you installed a particular application?
-no. in fact, just to make sure, after the nokia people re-installed my firmware (which deleted everything from the C drive) i formatted the E drive and did not install anything to see if it still happens. sure enough after 2 days, the phone restarted.
2. Did this start after a firmware update?
-yes. it never happened before the V20 version. (or at least i havent noticed that it happened).
3. Have you tried reinstalling the firmware through Ovi/PC suite?
-this is how i installed it the first time. altough everyone says its bad and you shouldnt do it and you should go to the nokia center and they will do it for you.
about this... i dont understand why nokia is giving us a tool to update our software for free... but then say "you shouldnt use that tool. go to your nokia care center and they will do it for you" which wastes valuable time and money (not surprisngly... my warrenty doesnt apply in Israel so i have to pay for that kind of stuff). nokia is the biggest cellphone company in the WORLD! why cant they give an international warrenty?!
*any idea why the "exit an app through open app menu" bug is only happening when the phone language is set to hebrew?! i mean thats very bizzare...
*so the update on the 28th is not the full V21 i understand...? will it atleast fix the self restarting and self turning off problem?! i mean i can handle not exiting an app through the menu (unless an app gets stuck and then its just annoying because you cant close it). but i cannot have a phone which turns itself off and restarts itself... that is just ridiculous.

• BT Home Hub restarting itself

For the past 2 or 3 days, I'm finding my BT Home Hub is restarting itself a lot. I previously did not have a problem with any form of self-restarting of the Home Hub.
I'm not sure what version it is, but if you tell me where to find it, I'll be happy to provide whatever information might help in a diagnosis.
It's happening about 6-12 times a day. Sometimes hours apart, sometimes only 20mins. I was thinking it might be maintence issues (we had a large electrical storm in the county on Tuesday (4 days ago) which caused 3 local power surges to affect my house (I did disconnect everything between the 1st and the 2nd). But there was no issue with the router resetting until a full 2 days after that.
It also does not appear to be running hot and the use of the seperate phones seems to be unaffected.
So... any ideas anyone? Any help is appreciated

Okay, so it looks like it's a HomeHub 1.0 judging from those pictures, my closest exchange is http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/?exchange=Pembroke&exact=758 and doesn't show that there's been any outtages in this time-frame.
The Hub is connected to the Master socket through an extension, it's not probably not the best solution but it's all we have available to us at present. But that hasn't changed for years, and certainly not during the timeframe of the current problems.
