Nano in "recovery mode"

My dad's ipod wouldn't work recently, when we tried to play, it just kept scrolling through the song titles.
When I connected it to my computer, a message said something like:
Detect ipod in recovery mode, please restore to use itunes.
Which I did (several times). It goes through the restore process, but then I get the same message about the recovery mode.
Of course this is 3 months beyond the warranty. And actually, this is a replacement of the first one that had another problem.
Please help--how do I get this out of recovery mode?
Thanks!

  • Nano constant recovery mode loop

I have a new iPod nano that wouldn't sync -- would plug in, get message it was in recovery mode, restore, then get same recovery message.  Googled and found that this might be because I had so many drives mapped that iTunes was getting confused and not finding the Nano.  Unplugged from corporate network, plugged in Nano and it worked like a charm.  Genius bar didn't have this one at their finger tips and it was very frustrating -- even got brand new Nano replaced thinking it was faulty -- until I found this simple fix so wanted to share it.

If an iDevice is going into recovery mode that indicates something is wrong with the device.
At any point when this occurred was the device setup as new?
If not, restore as new and see if the problem goes away.
If it has been restored as new and the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • Ipod nano in recovery mode?

    Hi
I recently purchased an ipod nano (3rd generation), I downloaded itunes onto my pc using windows XP, when I connected my ipod to my pc to transfer songs, itunes came up with the following message:
"itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes"
it then prompted for itunes to restore to factory settings, once this was complete it then updated the software, however after that was complete the original message above came up
so I basically cannot use my ipod as I cannot transfer any music to it, has anyone had this happen to them or should I just take it back to the shop?

Are you really running Windows 98? I sure hope not. :S
I have noticed a few others with the same problem the past couple of weeks. Many of them were able to resolve the issue by doing a low level reformat of the iPod's flash storage using the instructions in this article.

  • Ipod Nano Restored, iTunes says its in recovery mode

I have an ipod nano, and at first it wasn't recognized by itunes and found posts that addressed this issue. Problem was solved...
Until I plugged the ipod back in itunes then gave a message saying "the ipod is in recovery please restore befor eyou can use with iTunes". The problem is is I have the most up to date software on my ipod and have restored it, but iTunes says it is still in recovery mode.
Could someone please shed some light on this? It's possible someone else had this problem as well..
    Thanks in advance

Fair enough. I'm new to the Discussion place so
thanks for the tip. Do you think iPod Rip would be
able to get music from a crashed iPod?
Depends on how crashed "crashed" is. Will it still turn on/boot up to the menu? Does Windows recognize it as a drive when you connect it?
The application is fairly small, so it shouldn't take too long to download/install it and give it a shot. I've had some problems with iPodRip and QuickTime on some computers, and rather than spend time messing with it, I tried iPodUtil instead which seemed to work. The only thing with iPodUtil is that if you use the free trial version, every so often you'll see a popup that prompts you to pay for the registration, which is recommended, especially if the software works for you. You just have to acknowledge the message (every time it appears) and it continues importing your content.

  • When i connect to itunes its saying its in recovery mode on my nano. how do i get it out of recovery mode so i can download music

when i connect my nano to itunes it says i am in recovery mode. it told me to restore so i did and it still is in recovery mode and i lost everything on my ipod. what do i do to get it out of recovery mode?

Reset, can sometimes exit Recovery Mode if nothing is wrong with your iPhone. If there is problem only exit is to connect to iTunes and click the Update or Restore button that iTunes offers you.

  • IPod Nano stuck in recovery mode

    Hi,
I recently installed iTunes 7 on my new work PC and connected my iPod Nano (1st gen) to it for the first time. I was told that iTunes had detected an iPod in recovery mode and it needed to restore factory settings. I proceeded with this, and after this completed iTunes suggested I needed to update the software on my iPod, which I also completed (from 1.1 to 1.3)
My problem is that every time I plug my iPod in, iTunes tells me that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode, and needs to restore factory settings. When I do this, factory settings are restored, iTunes redects the iPod, and the same message comes up again, about iTunes detecting an iPod in recovery mode.
I seem to be stuck in this loop, and don't know what to do to fix it. I have tried all the obvious things (PC restart, different USB port, lastest iTunes software) but none of these seem to fix the problem. I cannot copy any music to my iPod.
I am very grateful for any help you can provide.
    Thanx

okay, that relentless "recovery mode" message can sometimes be produced by a Windows drive letter confusion. for troubleshooting advice on that, see the following document:

  • Itunes always showing my brand new ipod nano as in recovery mode

I just got a new ipod nano (not the latest model the one thats taller than it is wide - model number A1320). I downloaded itunes for the first time and connected my ipod via USB to my laptop. A popup appears telling me that an ipod in recovery mode has been connected. I restore the ipod to factory settings like it tells me to but when it resarts and pops up in itunes it still says it is in recovery mode.
I plug the ipod into my friends laptop and it works fine (he has an older version of itunes)

  • IPod Nano 5th Generation Stuck in Recovery Mode even after Restore.

    Hello,
I have an iPod Nano 5th generation (model number A1320) that I would like to completly restore to working condition.
Currently it is stuck in "recovery mode".
I have followed the steps given by Apple here on a Microsoft Windows system with the latest Apple iTunes software but after step 9 I am back to "recovery" mode where I am given the option of performing the restore process all over again.
How can I restore this iPod Nano?
    Thank you.

    Hello tmason101,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you can't restore the iPhone. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Moving up to a new computer - Nano is in recovery mode

With Itunes 7.5 installed on the new computer, XP Media OS, my nano brings up the recovery mode statement and forces me to restore to factory settings. This erases all on nano. If I eject the nano from the new computer without restore, and plug it into the old computer XP Home OS, the nano syncs fine. I have reinstalled itunes on both machines to make that part the same. I cannot find any help with the help files in itunes re: recovery mode. Has anyone else experienced this? What am I missing here?

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive

  • Help! iPOD Nano stuck in recovery mode.

My 2G nano is stuck in recovery mode. iTunes always says to restore the ipod, but after the restore is done, the message "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." This hapeens over and over.

Have you tried fully reinstalling iTunes?
First, disconnect your iPod from your computer.
Start out by going to "Add or Remove programs" in Control Panel.
Find "iTunes" on this list, and remove it.
Then, go to the iTunes download page to install the latest version of iTunes (7.1.1.5).
After that has fully installed, restart your computer.
After the computer has loaded, reconnect your iPod to your computer, and see if you still get the "recovery mode loop" happening.
Not sure if it would work, but I guess it's worth a try.
