Need career guidance

Hi,
I am a PLSQL developer and i wud like to know if i should also possess unix scripting knowledge..
I wud liketo know the career prospects of PLSQL and i wud aslo like to know if i can switch to datawarehousing or Oracle APPs...
Thanks in advance.

My opinion is that a solid basic working knowledging of unix shell scripting is essential - even if you wind up working only on Windows. That latter is because of the need to know how to do things repeatedly and consistently, one of the biggest problems I see in those environs (people overestimate their ability to do so manually, often extremely so). Places that have multiple enviroments (which is just about everywhere nowadays) often have unix style tools on Windows for this reason, as well as to ease transitions between environments. It also provides the basis for other general tools and scripting languages like perl, and even SQL things like general expressions.
As far as the other career advice - it's a big field, find your own strengths and weaknesses, play to your strengths and improve your weaknesses. Identifying the next big thing is impossible, so be prepared to ride whatever comes along for the short term, and change direction when necessary. As your career moves along, it is entirely likely your outlook will change over time. At one point, I was amazed and spooked by the realization I was being paid the big consultant bucks for writing in a 4GL essentially the same first program I wrote 20+ years before as a Jr. programmer in BASIC+. Pay especial attention to understanding relational theory, it will help even outside the R realm.
Doing things just for the money is often a mistake, but sometimes "obsolete" stuff that you have become comfortable with winds up having big paydays as everyone follows shiny things and the skill becomes scarce. Don't think that will happen too soon with PL, but good PL people are scarce already, especially those who understand when not to use PL.

  • Career Guidance

Hi! Pl give me career guidance as a Oracle Professional. I have following details:
    1. OCP (developer track) in 2002.
    2. MCA (persuing)
    3. Maintaining/Developing Oracle based ERP (Oracle9i,Forms/Reports 6i).
    4. Total Exp in Forms/Repots is 08 years.
I m confused to join the latest Oracle Products.
Now a days, Oralce has many latest products. So pl guide/advice me best Oracle Product to
    suit my experience.
    Oracle E-Business Suite ? Oracle Financials ? Oracle Apps ? Oracle 11g Form/Report ? Oralce 11g Java Developer ? Oracle 11g Java with ADF ? ....etc.
    Thanks & Regards.

    Hi,
It's depends with your final goal.
    01. If you want to be a good programmer then you might need to think about moving in to Java with Oracle (Ex: ADF Faces). Here its good to move from Oracle Forms and Reports because most of the companies start migrating their Forms/Reports applications into different technologies. Mainly to Java. Even Oracle Corporation itself provide more guidance for this.
    02. Oracle E-Business Suite is one of the best ERP application. But again this application has many modules. So if you wnat to be a application specialist then you have to deside some area (Ex: HR, GL) and then expert on this. Because application specialist need to have in-depth knowledge in some area.
    03. Oracle E-Business Suite has another area for those who build new reports, integrate with other applications. For this area you don't need in-depth knowledge. (But you need to have some knowledge in those modules). But here you need to have very good PL/SQL and Report Experience. Because you have experience in Reports and PL/SQL , you need to get some knowledge in E-Business Suite and other integration techniques. (This area is always depends with the current trend. So you need to do more research on it and find whether your living area has any demand for e-Business Suite)
    04. Oracle Warehouse Builder is another good area. Because these days almost all the companies start using historical details and most of the companies understand the important to have a data warehouse application. So its a good thing to get to know warehouse builder and related ETL technologies as well.
I just gave MY OWN IDEA with my experience. Someone else can have other ideas (sometimes against the things I mentioned here.). So all comments are welcome!!
    Thanks,

    Dear Devang Nandha,
    A very relevant question.
I feel that you should gain good knowledge in one of the modules. Please do not select the module based on the popularity. Select the module based on your work expereince and your interest. Trust me there is enough in any module to learn and to contribute.
Devang, you are in a very good position as you have the choice of selecting the module. Make the most of this opportunity. For any specific query, please let me know.
Welcome to SAP world and best of luck for your future endeavors.

  • GP and WD with Adobe Interactive form question - need some guidance.

    Hello experts,
FYI, I'm running ECC 5.0 Support Stack 9, EP 7.0 SPS 11, NWDS 2.0.9_15 with Adobe Livecyle Designer.
I am slightly stuck with what I'm trying to do. I have created a web dynpro application that has an Adobe interactive form. I'm trying to use guided procedures to initiate a process so that this interactive form can be filled out and submitted to an approver. I need the relevant parties to receive a notification email. I have setup email templates and services, I just need to know how it will fit into the process. Once approved in the process, a BAPI should be invoked to populate some fields in the form. Should I be creating the Web Dynpro application to invoke the bapi or should a guided procedure callable object invoke the bapi? I know how to do these things, but I dont know which method I should use, in order to correctly have this process flow from point A - point B. Should the process appear in the Universal Worklist? If not, why not? Will it only appear in the GP runtime? I have pretty much read thru most of the tutorials but still cannot get this GP stuff to work as a WHOLE process.
Any guidance, suggestions, possible solutions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kunal.

    Hi,
It seems you have not activated the Composite Form object. Only after activation you will be able to use it to create a Callable Object of type composite form.
    Hope this helps,
    Ashutosh

  • In need of guidance for website ad

I am in the process of making a website and I have everything done and ready to go. I had it reviewed and am being asked to put in a ad on the home page. The website I was shown is http://www.dog.com/. On the top of this site is a flash ad but the problem is I have no idea how to make this, what adobe program to use in making it, and what needs to be done to get it onto the site. Please! some type of guidance on this would be greatly helpful. I own the Adobe CS5 Master suite so I know I have the software to do it just don't know where to begin.
Thanks for the help in advanced

Flash is not supported by all web devices (iPhone/iPad/iTouch).  Also Flash content isn't visible to screen readers, search engines or robot language translators.  So if you use Flash Pro to create your slideshow, you also need to provide alternative HTML content for non-flash supporting devices.   Do a Google search for SWF Object Replacement Script.
All that said, you could use an Ajax or jQuery content slider to achieve the same thing without penalty to non-flash supporting devices.
Log-in to Adobe Widget Exchange with your Widget Browser and grab the Spry Content Slides.

  • In desperate need of guidance... ASAP, PLEASE!

Thanks for reading this! I am converting from GoLive to Dreamweaver CS% and boy are things different! I feel like I am starting all over again. I have gone through 20+ tutorials and read through pages and pages of info. I have attempted my index page and keep having trouble, start over and read more info and tutorials and the circle goes on. I have what looks like the correct layout in the design window, but when I preview it in the browser the footer (address) isn't at the bottom of the page, it is up under the div tags that are suppose to be above it. Also, the 4 div tags I have side by side and centered in the window aren't centered, they are to the left. I have been working on this day and night for several days. ANY guidance would be GREATLY appreciated!!! My code is the following:

In a separate file, try this.  You probably still need some aligning, but it should be a start.

  • An idea to edit my MP3s...  Need some guidance

I know I know and I already searched the topic extensively... But maybe I'm googling the wrong stuff. Anywho, here we go.
I want to create a small app (no gui) that runs through my MP3 directory and takes each file name (i.e. artist name - song title.mp3) and sets the "ARTIST" and "SONG TITLE" id3 tags according to the filename and clear out any of the other fields. I just hate having all my songs on my MP3 player not displaying correctly. I have too many to do it individually so I figured I could wing it myself.
    Here's my plan...
    - App will cycle through a specified directory.
    - It will grab each file (only MP3s are in there, no need for specification) and tokenize the filename. I've done tokenizing before and that shouldn't be a problem.
    - Based on the tokenizing take what is before the - (dash) and put that in the "ARTIST" field in the id3 tag. Then what is after the - (dash) put in the "SONG TITLE" field in the id3 tag. Naturally I will cut off the .mp3 extension.
So really I need to know how to do 2 things and I searched for the first one. I need to learn how to cycle through a directory and grab each file and handle it somehow. I can probably manage that, but cycling is the problem. I googled this and came up short handed.
The second thing is I need to know how to edit and alter the id3 tags in an MP3. I'm sure I can figure this out eventually. Since its much later in my application I haven't yet looked around yet on this. I'm not asking for help on this but if you know of a valuable resource for some references on how to tackle this please inform me.
    Any guidance?

To get the file names, look into the methods of the File class. Some provide arrays as output.
To split/parse the file names, use methods from the String class.
This site has numerous examples, some probably apply:

I have fa0/0 configured with IP 192.168.1.2/24. This interface will be connected to an AT&T DSL gateway for Internet service. I have fa0/1 configured with IP 172.16.1.1/16. The goal is to provide Internet access to both VLANs, but no routing between VLANs. I am also enabling a DHCP pool of 172.16.10.0/22 intended for use on vlan10 (public wifi access) and another DHCP pool of 172.16.20.0/24 for vlan20 (private staff). I assume fa0/1 has to be configured for dot1q trunking and connected to a switch port also configured for trunking, yes? I also have WAPs that will need to serve up both VLANs. The WAPs I have are 121 and 2600 series. I assume I will be creating two SSIDs - one for each VLAN, yes?
I am looking to keep this as simple as possible.
What else do I need to consider? thank you in advance for your guidance.

    thanks for ur valuable reply.
u r right that whenever we create a new db, oracle always assigns a new dbid. which will be different from the id of backupset db.
kindly explain me steps to perform, whether it is duplicate db case or standby.
how rman will recoganize the backupset.

  • Career guidance please help

i have 13 years of exprience as hardware and networking person an science graduate.
8 months back i have gone through instructor led training for oracel 9i dba track( all four titles sql, funda I, funda II, per & tuning). I am looking for a job but found that all companies need oracle apps dba and very very few need 9i dba.(plus experience no freshers)
so should i persue OCP or do the instructor led training for oracle apps dba or else sun solaris admin.
which one will fetch me a job and secure my future in long term.suggest a growth path.
    please guide me
    thanks
    anil M.

I wrote a long article about this in my blog last year.
I think if you're looking for a secure career in the long term then stick with networking, as every computing architecture for the foreseeable future is going to be a network. But I can understand that the thrill of crawling under desks sticking cables into hard-to-get-at ports might pall after a while. So by all means stick at the Oracle DBA line if you want: just bear in mind that it is easier to move into a new line of work by shifting sideways from an existing job than it is to persuade an employer to take on a learner.
    Two last thoughts:
    (1) Oracle may be a legacy technology. Which is not to say it's not a solid, good product. It just cannot maintain its dominance of the RDBMS market forever, and of course the RDBMS market is not guaranteed either.
    (2) Have you considered moving into application servers? I would have thought webmastery was a better fit with a background in networks.
    Good luck, APC

  • Need some guidance to use Airport Express as a bridge

We currently have an Airport Extreme base station, which is working really well for all the wireless enabled computers in our home (my iMac and 2 laptop PC's) but we now have a bit of a challenge. Our daughter has an older desktop computer (PC running Win XP) in her bedroom which doesn't have a wireless card installed. If we purchased an Airport Express, could we plug it into an outlet in her room and connect her computer to it via the ethernet cable? Will the Airport Express pick up the wireless signal from the Extreme base station and enable her to have internet access? I hope I'm making sense, I'm not very computer savvy and don't know all the lingo. <g> Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated as we haven't purchased the Express yet and won't if it won't suit our needs.

    Welcome to the discussions!
+If we purchased an Airport Express, could we plug it into an outlet in her room and connect her computer to it via the ethernet cable? Will the Airport Express pick up the wireless signal from the Extreme base station and enable her to have internet access?+
Yes, this will work very well. Just be sure to get the AirPort Express 802.11"n".
You will configure the Express to "join" the wireless network that the AirPort Extreme is creating and "enable ethernet clients". (I assume that there is adequate signal strength where the AirPort Express will be located).
Post back if you need assistance during the configuration.

  • System Backup: Need basic guidance

I just got my first external hard drive (500GB Seagate FreeAgent)and really need guidance from scratch.
I need to back up not only my computer but most importantly, photos and home movies.
    1. Do I need to format the external hard drive?
    2. How do I backup everything?
    3. Is there a way for the computer to automatically do this with Mac OS 10.4.11?
    4. Do I need to partition for any particular reason if saving photos & movies are my priority?
    Thanks!

Yes, you need to prepare the drive:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Conducting backups relies on using backup software such as:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
You can also simply clone your startup drive to your external drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the backup drive.
    Source means the startup drive.
Backup drives should be kept separate from data storage drives. If it's you intent to use this drive for both then you should partition the drive. However, backup should be your priority. If yo save files and have no backup, then when those files are lost, erased, or damaged they are gone for good. Keeping backup drives separate from storage drives also protects against drive failure.

  • Oracle application production support career guidance

    hi
iam working in a reputed mnc with CMMi level 5 .Started as fresher (BE I.T) i have around 1.6 years of experiance in unix scripting/oracle sql production support.
with learning of sql and shell scripting
i want to make my career in oracle which should be more dynamic, learning and creative not like in production support which have monotonus life.
could anyone please guide me about what career path i should choose ?
DBA , i have heard is montonous job too with same routine backups,no creativity with nightshifts and all, but it is more stable as people said. I have no experiance of it.
second devolper track in sql/pl sql having its own limitations like less demand, less financial growth etc. and people usually wants to shift in other area like BO
i don`t have any info about others areas like that i would like to explore
    1)Datawarehousing
    2)Oracle apps
    3)Business objects (BO reporting)
    4)Oracle CRM etc
5)Others (thats all i know, please add some others if they are creative )
    Problem area:
1)iam really confused now which way to choose development or support?
2)how to jump in other company on what basis after total experience of 2 years? Since iam in prod support they will hire me for the same again
3)How could i get to others areas like CRM,BO datawarehouse, apps ?As they more demanding and good learning and future path
4)what to do right now at this position to enhance my skill set in this field (What to learn? )
preparing for OCA right now but uncertain for career.
My work seems to be dull with just monitoring of task, some project related occasional issues in oracle ,ticket making and self learning (wat to learn? sql daily! )

i want to make my career in oracle which should be more dynamic, learning and creative not like in production support which have monotonus life.I wish it were monotonous! When it costs $$/second for production to stop, it can get very exciting very fast!

second devolper track in sql/pl sql having its own limitations like less demand, less financial growth etc. and people usually wants to shift in other area like BOThere is about 10X more demand for developers than administrators over the long term. Various sub-specialties are hot at various times. But that isn't as important as knowing what excites you.

5)Others (thats all i know, please add some others if they are creative )
    Problem area:
1)iam really confused now which way to choose development or support? Most people find development much more exciting. But that depends on what you like and what your skill set is and the support environment. I once had a support job that I loved, until it simply became overwhelming in volume. I've seen support people in jobs that I just pitied, they were so bad. DBA is my real love, what's yours? I have a dev/support/admin job, so even though most work isn't what I would choose, I still get to do what I find exciting. It took a lot of experiences to get to this point, though.
2)how to jump in other company on what basis after total experience of 2 years? Since iam in prod support they will hire me for the same againThat is true, headhunters and HR departments want those with 2 years experience in a specific skill set, because they are cheaper. The trick is to find an environment where you can move to what you want. For many people, that is a development environment, especially if you can find a mentor that can help you move in the direction you want. Of course, you need to define that direction. Life throws all sorts of opportunities at you at random times, you need to be prepared to seize them when they come.
3)How could i get to others areas like CRM,BO datawarehouse, apps ?As they more demanding and good learning and future pathDevelopment and implementation are about it. They all have a future path, some are very boring. What's boring to me may be exciting to you.
4)what to do right now at this position to enhance my skill set in this field (What to learn? )Look at the sites that post job ads in your area. You need a critical eye to translate into what they really want, but it becomes obvious what is hot. Of course, you need to know what will be hot in a couple of years, but if you see what is hot now, you can pick up on those in a couple of years when something else is hot, and eventually catch up.

Please suggest!A lot of work is what you make of it, attitude overrides knowledge. You can always learn, but your attitude comes from within and takes effort to improve.
If you can find something that you like that everyone else thinks is bad, so much the better. That is the essence of geekdome.

  • Need some guidance, advice on AS for a video menu im designing

    Hi all,
I consider myself a well versed professional in terms of design layout in Photoshop, to Iillustrator, and InDesign.  I have  just begun to pick up Flash cs3 and have had no problem laying out elements and so on.  I understand the timeline, since I do allot of video editingfrom FinalCut to AfterEffects.  However what is new and alien to me is ActionScripting I don't know what is best 2.0 or 3.0.  I have tried some tutorials in drop menus and so on.  yet I'm having issues across the board as to what process to build this video menu page.   (see photo below)
The function of this menu is that you roll over a green title and a menu drops along side of it, then you roll your mouse courser over the sub menu and click on a sub menu title and a video starts.  I believe the functions to be easy and straight forward.  yet action script puzzles me.  is there a site for beginners or tutorials in just menus like this i could copy and use while i pick up action script whatever. or if anyone has simple code ideas to put or drop in said Key Frames or Layers (see photo below)
any help guidance would be soooo appreciated.
    thanks

there are lots of flash tutorials.  use google to search.
however, if you're not, at least aquainted with some oop language, you're in for a steep learning curve trying to create a dropdown menu using actionscript.
if you don't need any of the as3 features, use as2.  it's easier to learn.  although, if you plan to do more flash, you might want to skip as2 and learn as3.
for your tutorial use:  flash as2 dropdown menu tutorial
