Netctl: Retry connection on DHCP failure

So I'm in the following situation:
Our university wireless network often has DHCP issues and it takes thousands of millions of retries until you finally get an address. The problem is, netctl-auto doesn't retry to connect to the network on a failure. It just stops doing anything.
Is there a way to get netctl to retry a profile until it's working when there are no other networks in range configured?
Wolle

Anyone looking at this should check this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190141
Basically, it boils down to adding "-b" switch to dhcpcd.

  • How to change number of retries and delay before retrying after software install failure

    I deploy a software to client, but the installation is fail, so it will retry. but How to change the number of retries and delay before retrying after software install failure?
    I find "Retry Settings" in "Software Distribution Component Properties". But I think it work for Distribution, not the installation. am I right?

    First, are you referring to packages or applications because the behavior is different.
    Also, why do you want it to retry a failure? It failed for a reason so you need to fix the cause of the failure first. If it failed the first, it will likely fail the next time for the same reason. In general, ConfigMgr will only retry on transient type
    errors.

  • TCP connection for DHCP failover frequently are broken in Solaris 10

    Hi
    We have two dhcp servers which are installed in Solaris 10 and set to a failover pair. Currently, we can find that tcp connection for dhcp failover protocol are frequently broken. It looks like that primary dhcp server initiatively send FIN message to secondary one but in general, this tcp connection should always keep alive. On the other hand, the tcp connection can not completely be closed right now which FIN_WAIT_2 status in Primary one and CLOSE_WAIT status in secondary would last for a long time.
    Will Solaris 10 cause this fault? Is it a known bug in OS?

    Thanks, but had found a previous discussion with this hint and applied it.
    svccfg -s sendmail listprop shows config /local_only = false
    Yes, I would really love to fix the fault, but what I would really like is some hints as to how to debug ports under svc control.

  • Why connect two dhcp servers with different IP addresses?

    so for an assignment at college we had to configure a router connected to two switches which both had a server connected to them.
    the computers were connected via dhcp to either server however each side had a different IP. we have now been asked to justify as to why two servers were used with different IP which I cannot quite produce a business orientated answer.
    I can understand connecting two dchp servers on same IP to increase fault tolerance but I do not understand using two separate IP addresses.

    Hi,
    Does “using two separate IP addresses“ mean 2 subnets which are connected by router?
    If you have separately configured 2 DHCP servers on the 2 subnets, and want 1 of the 2 DHCP servers to provide fault tolerance for the other. You need to use an RFC 1542–compliant router, or DHCP relay agent, in order to forward DHCP broadcast traffic.
    If there is any misunderstanding about your question, please correct.

    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_31-b13)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.31-b07, mixed mode)
    Any ideas or am I missing something completely?
    Thanks
    Andy

    Hi, Andy. Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new at this ME embedded stuff. I had my challenges, but was finally able to get my board up with a static address. I went through a lot of headaches, but finally got the board flashed with the latest bin. I then updated the jwc_properties.ini file on the SD card to include:
    # Whether static configuration or DHCP server is used do get IP address. Possible values: dhcp,static
    ip.method = static
    # IP address,used with static IP configuration only
    ip.addr = 192.168.0.30
    # Network mask,used with static IP configuration only
    ip.netmask = 255.255.255.0
    # Network gateway,used with static IP configuration only
    ip.gateway = 192.168.0.1
    # DNS server,used with static IP configuration only
    ip.dns = 208.67.222.222
    # MAC address
    mac.addr = 01:02:03:04:05:06
    I was then put the card into the board, disconnected both USB cables, and then powered it up. From that point I was able to ping the board. I can now use Device Manager in NetBeans to connect to the device.
    I am struggling quite a bit with many issues. It seems that when I try to stop the app from NetBeans, the "please wait" dialog hangs forever. I have to use Windows Task Manager to kill the "JavaW" process tree and reconnect the board.
    I have also had trouble understanding the GPIO pin assignments. Another gotcha was trying to use the AutoStart feature. Since the sample app never cleanly exited, I thought that I bricked the board. The secret is to power it down, remove the SD card, and then delete all files EXCEPT the jwc_properties.ini file, put the SD card back in, then power up. It seems that the board forgets that the MIDlet was installed.
    Hope this helps others out there.
    Please everybody, post your experiences here. There seem to be very few of us, and finding pearls in the dust is rare right now.
    Regards,
    Pete

  • Alert: WebServices connectivity (Internal) transaction failure - The credentials can't be used to test Web Services.

    Hi.
    Could you please help me to resolve this issue.
    I have SCOM 2012 installed to monitor environment with Exchnage 2010 SP3. There are 2 sites with Exchnage servers within the organization. There are 2 mailboxes being created to test both sites.
    I am getting following alert:
    Alert: WebServices connectivity (Internal) transaction failure - The credentials can't be used to test Web Services.
    description: The test mailbox was not initialized. Run new-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1 to ensure that the test mailbox is created.
    Detailed information:
    [Microsoft.Exchange.Monitoring.CasHealthUserNotFoundException]: The user wasn't found in Active Directory. UserPrincipalName: extest*****@****.local. Additional error information: [System.Security.SecurityException]:

    Diagnostic command: "Test-WebServicesConnectivity -MonitoringContext:$true -TrustAnySSLCertificate:$true -LightMode:$true"
    EventSourceName: MSExchange Monitoring WebServicesConnectivity Internal
    I have tried the next steps:
    1. Verified that mailbox is exist and it's not locked (same for the second mailbox)
    2. Deleted those mailboxes and created  a new  using new-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1  verified that this mailbox is visible on all DC's accross the forest (both mailboxes)
    and that temporary password was accepted;
    3. Cleared the cache on the SCOM 2012;
    4. Still getting the same alert
    I will really appriciate any help.

    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • WRT54GL internet connection through DHCP

    I'm having problems connecting my modem (D-Link DSL-320B) with my router (WRT54GL).
    If I connect my modem with my PC I have an internet connection. The modem authenticates to my ISP and has an DHCP server running on the LAN port. So far this is the only way I can get an internet connection. I can't use bridge mode because my ISP doesn't support it.
    I want to route my internet traffic through my router (QoS and other stuff).
    On the router I can switch to DHCP on the WAN port. Then the router receives internet IP address, DNS server and so on. I see that on the web interface. The problem is PC's connected to the router have no internet connection.
    The strange thing is that I can't get internet connectivity from the router either. Ping and trace from the router itself can't reach the target, not even the modem.
    Modem (D-Link DSL-320B)
    Connection Type: PPPoA VC-Mux
    IP Address: 212.183.47.126
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
    Default Gateway: 62.47.95.239
    Preferred DNS Server: 195.3.96.67
    Alternate DNS Server: 213.33.98.136
    LAN
    IP Address: 192.168.2.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.252
    DHCP Server: ON
    Router (WRT54GL)
    Connection Type: DHCP
    IP Address: 212.183.47.126
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
    Gateway: 192.168.2.1
    DNS: 195.3.96.67, 213.33.98.136
    Status: Connected
    Router IP Address: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP: 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.149
    I have read other threads but found no solutions to my problem.
    There are two DHCP server connected after each other but they are in different networks so that shouldn't be a problem.
    I want to handle my router the internet traffic because I want to use QoS and some other stuff.
    Has anybody an idea that to do?

    Thanks for the idea, it just doesn't work.
    I turned of the DHCP on the router and changed the IP address. Also I changed the subnet mask on the modem to 255.255.255.0 to allow more clients.
    As a result PCs don't get an IP address automatically anymore. So I configured the IP manually on my PC.
    Still no internet connection.
    Your solution works if I connect the modem to a LAN port of the router. Then the router is acting as a switch, and all internet traffic is handled by the modem (the modem is also acting as DHCP server for the entire network).
    A working solution but just not the solution I want, sorry (I want my router to handle internet traffic for QoS and some other stuff).

  • Can not connect with dhcp - renew dhcp lease will switch directly to manuel

    If have the following problem
    I us apple Airport extreme to connect to internet.
    I have 5 Macs, all connecting with airport . They work fine with DHCP. Since 2 weeks I have a problem that one computer – a mac book pro with 10.5.6 will not connect.
    When I switch to dhcp and select renew dhcp lease it switch directly back to manuell. I have no chance to connect with dhcp.
    Has anyone a suggestion?
    Thanks

    Wonder why Apple hasn't chimed in on this one...
    Whenever you have an issue like this where it's fine, then DHCP stops working for any reason.... Reset the PRAM.
    How to:
    Apple Logo -> Restart.
    After the screen goes black -> Hold down all 4 keys until you hear the third Bong.
    "Option"+[Apple Logo OR key to the left of the space bar]"P""R"
    After the third BONG or Apple Chime whatever you want to call it. The system's Parameter Ram or to the PC Crowd the CMOS has been reset. This resets your clock, brightness, volume, etc.... So things will get reset along the way but it also resets the IRQ and DMA stats on the logic board. Ala, reseting your Airport's Connection to the logic board, Controllers, etc.

  • Retry connecting to a fax server

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement to retry connecting to the Fax server if the fax server is down, while trying to fax the pdf files generating it through XML bursting feature.
    Presently, the bursting program tries to connect to the fax server and if the server is down, the program completes with an Error "Delivery Channel Is Null".
    How can we have the bursting program re-try connecting to the fax server or try to post the files once it wakes up..
    All pointers are highly appreciated.

  • [SelfSolved] Sharing connection with dhcp server and netctl

    Yesterday I switched to netctl and old, lovely network problems come back
    I have two interfaces: enp2s0 (profile Internet) and enp5s2 (profile Shared). enp2s0 connects to Internet, enp5s2 is LAN with DHCP. Very similar problem I described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153353 but now that config not works anymore.
    First, netctl can't start profile Shared. It's simple static config just to get up interface and set IP.
    Description='A basic static ethernet connection'
    Interface=enp5s2
    Connection=ethernet
    IP=static
    Address=('10.0.0.1/24')
    #Routes=('10.0.0.1/24 via 255.255.255.255')
    Gateway='10.0.0.1'
    DNS=('8.8.8.8')
    SkipNoCarrier=yes
    Of course dhcpd also not work, because interface is not configured.
    Second, if I start Shared profile and dhcpd manually, I cant connect to Internet. I set iptables like here:
    iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface enp2s0 -j ACCEPT
    iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface enp2s0 -j MASQUERADE
    and set
    sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
    Now, if I stop Shared profile, I can connect
    Edit:
    I switched back to netcfg and... it's working! Simple question, why this crap is in core repository?! Just because uses systemd?
    Edit2:
    Ok, it's not a crap I just love to learn about Linux networking in such lovely Sunday like today
    Shared profile should look like this:
    Description='A basic static ethernet connection'
    Interface=enp5s2
    Connection=ethernet
    IP=static
    Address=('10.0.0.1/24')
    SkipNoCarrier=yes

    Ok, I update dhcpd.conf:
    authotitative;
    option routers 10.0.0.1;
    option domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222;
    subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
    range 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.255;
    but nothing happened
    Problem was in iptables config, I should use:
    iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
    iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface eth0 -j MASQUERADE
    iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface eth1 -j MASQUERADE
    and now it works!

  • Windows XP SP 2 DHCP failure connecting to OS X Tiger Server

    Hello,
    Standard setup for DHCP Server on OS X Tiger Server... latest version. Mac's acquire 192.168.7.x just fine from OS X Server. When XP SP2 client attempts, shows self-assigned ip and subnet. Looking at the DHCP log in Server Admin, the server sees the xp client discover message, offers a response to the xp client, but that is it... no request for DHCP configuration information or acknowledge. If I go wireless, 10.0.0.x with XP, does fine as does the mac clients. What am I missing. Turned off the firewall, same scenario for DHCP through OS X Server. If I plug in the XP client directly into the cable modem, works fine for DHCP also. I've done some searching on the net for some info, unable to find any info that helps. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Add some setup info. en0 is the static ip address for the server to the cable modem... 10 static. Using en1 as the DHCP server 192.168.7.1. Network consists of 10/100 switches. Standard DHCP settings in SA. IP range from 192.168.7.2 thru 127 using en1. DNS is set to 192.168.7.1. LDAP is configured and works fine with Open Directory on. I do have WINS set to our en0 static ip address for the server, but Windows services in SA are off. That is the DHCP settings in SA. Any info and help would be greatly appreciated.

  • [Solved] Netctl - Cannot connect to wireless network

    Hi,
    since I replaced netcfg with netctl a week ago, it worked just fine. Today, however, i wanted to connect to a different wireless network and i couldn't make it work.
    Here's some information about how i connected to my home network (which worked fine):
    I changed the netcfg config files to match netctl syntax (as described in the wiki)
    I activated netctl-auto@wlan0
    The connection to the network was established almost immediately after (re)boot or resume after suspend
    First off: I double-checked the config file for the second network. Both syntax and SSID/passphrase are correct. Also, I don't have special characters in my network/profile names, the names in brackets are placeholders.
    Here's what happens after a fresh reboot (only the second network is in range of my pc, so it doesn't connect to my first - working - network):
    Netctl-auto is active and running, but seems to repeatedly lose connection to the second network:
    # systemctl status netctl-auto@wlan0

    I'm pretty sure everything should theoretically work fine, because it worked before the netctl update. I was even connected to this network today until i had to reboot!
    Now here's what happens if I try to connect manually:

    @silverzhao I use a manual dhcpcd/wpa_supplicant way of setting up my wlan0 using http://git.r-36.net/conn and I have the same problem.
    I have to kill my wireless and restart after seeing a message like:
    May 20 10:12:33 x220 kernel: wlan0: AP a4:b1:e9:55:25:2f changed bandwidth, new config is 2462 MHz, width 2 (2452/0 MHz)

  • Cisco 867VAE drops connection on DHCP lease timeout

    Hey!
    We have a very annoying problem on our hands. I'm no IOS expert, but I make do.
    We've got a Telia DSL connection that has a 20 minute DHCP lease timer. Every 20 minutes when it shakes hand again, the connection drops for about 5 seconds. This because the Cisco thinks that administratively shutting down the interface is a good idea....
    How do I stop this behavior? I've tried manually setting <ip dhcp client lease 1 0 0> (for 1 day lease) but it completely disregards that.
    Best would obviously be to stop it shutting down the interface every time, but worst case scenario I'll take a solution with a longer DHCP lease since the address rarely changes.

    I'm attaching the current running-config as well.
    Thank you in advance!

    I'm sorry for not reporting in. The case is closed at Cisco and they simply couldn't do anything. The router does, according to the debug logs, send dhcp renew requests, but the ISP doesn't reply to them. If they get lost on the way, or if there's an incompatability with the ISP, I dunno. I heavily doubt it, since Telia (Swedish ISP) used Cisco gear for pretty much everything.
    Also, Telia will not reply to anything like this, since they don't support equipment they don't supply.
    So I'm completely at a loss, and will remain there until I stumble across something.
    I've received an 887M router though, which I'm gonna test. But I'm currently stuck with the fact that it's not supported anymore, and therefor I can't seem to download new IOS software (it uses a very old one).
    This is the last reply I got before they closed my case:

    As pointed to you in my previous mails  renews/packets are being sent and as router is not getting back any reply, lease is timing out and that’s  the reason why the interface is getting flapped. You need to find with ISP  why the renews and rebind packets are not responded to by Providers DHCP server.
    Hope this clarifies your query.
    Thanks and regards,
