Netgear Modem and WRT54GL Router

Hi all,
I have a wired network using a Netgear Modem and have recently decided to implement a wireless hotspot for users to connect via their wireless laptops etc.
Because of the DHCP facility in the WRT54GL router (allocating ip addresses automatically etc.), I was recommended to this route.
What I'm sitting with is that the Netgear Modem's default IP address is 192.168.0.1 and all my wired desktops are setup using IP addresses following on from that (e.g. 192.168.0.100 / 192.168.0.101 etc etc.)
The Linksys's default IP address is 192.168.1.1
I've managed to change that to 192.168.0.2 so that it can be seen on the same network, but now:-
1.) How do I access the router's adminstrative settings (previously it was : IE Browser > typing in 192.168.1.1 and inserting my username and password and I was in). When I go to IE Browser > typing in 192.168.0.2 it says it cannot "display the page" and no matter what I do, I cannot get to access it. I can ping the 192.168.0.2 address and replies so it is connected etc. Any suggestions?
Also, I've installed a 2nd PCI card in my server (that controls the internet access to the desktops etc.) and shared the internet connection from LAN1 (onboard motherboard network port). I've connected the Linksys WRT54GL Router via a cable from the LAN2 port to Port1 on the Linksys. Linksys DHCP setting is disabled as well. What should happen is that when a wireless laptop connects to the internet, the DHCP should allocate an IP address to the laptop and should be able to have access to the internet.
2.) On the wireless laptop, when searching for a wireless connection, I can see the Linksys Router and can connect. I have connection as Skype connects perfectly but yet, I cannot access the Internet. When typing in a website address, it comes up saying "Unable to Display Page". If I type in http://216.239.51.100 I get the google home page but if I type in the web address, nothing !! I have been told that it could be a DNS problem but no one can tell me how to fix it. Any suggestions?
Can anybody out there shed some light on these 2 issues?
Thank you
Heinz

    Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.  You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:

  • Changed Modem and WRT54GL quits passing Internet

I have a WRT54GL fed by a Motorola 5101 cable modem which has worked fine for years.  Today I replaced the 5101 with a neew modem furnished by Charter with DOCIS 3.0 capability which resulted in loss of internet connection.  The modem works when connected directly to the computer and the router also functions as before except the two don't play well together.  I dont know if there is an issue with DOCSIS 3.0 and the WRT54 or what.  The firmware in the router is very old - something in 2006 so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.  Any recommendations or suggestions are sought.  Thanks

Hi greywing, if the setup is working now, you may put off doing the firmware update and the hard reset to later. You may do it when you encounter a problem with the connection again. It's still best to clone the Mac Address clone though. It should be the Mac address of your main router that should be cloned.  As to the backup thing, it saves all the settings that you have done on the router's page.
With regard to the Mac address under the Status tab, they are automatically detected  and what you are seeing is the Mac address of  your router. It's not the Mac address of your PC.

  • Moving BT Infinity modem and HH3 router to another...

Typically my master socket is in the dining room and all my IT kit is two floors up.  Was using HH3 as Total Broadband in my loft with ethernet connection out to my Apple Airport Extreme which ran the network - everything hunky dory but I wanted faster speed - hence Inifinty.
BT Engineer had a look at my set up, started talking of bringing in a hoist into my back garden to install new Master Socket and it just seemed easier to install in the dining room and use the HH3 as router and re-configure my network - wrong!  Most devices lose contact with the HH3 on a regular basis, therefore I want to re-look at installing Infinity into the loft and revert the HH3 to a ethernet connection out to my Airport Extreme.  I understand all the engineers do at the master socket is install an Infinity faceplate.  I've tried replacing the loft extension with a split front BT master socket and moveed the Infinity faceplate - result; voice remains but no DSL on the white Open Reach modem.
Are there any suggestions what I need to do?  The original extension had four wires connections (white & blue, blue, orange & white, white & orange) but the BT master socket only has three positions and my original master socket only has two wires connected.

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem and Linksys router

If anyone is having a hard time getting these three to work together to get on-line, I know your pain. I've spent the better part of two days trying to get these devices to talk to each other. After hours spent trying different combinations and little to no help from Verizon and Linksys I have finally gotten my DSL up and running through my Linksys router. I post this in hopes that someone doesn't spin their wheels like I have been doing over the past few days. Here's what I did to get them to work:
    1. Reset both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    2. Unplug the router and the modem
    3. Connect an ethernet cable from your Apple to the Westell modem and power it back on
    4. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser of choice. The username should be "admin" (w/o the quotes) and password should be "password" (again no quotes)
    5. It will ask you to update your username and password
    6. Under the CONFIGURATION heading select VC CONFIGURATION and click on EDIT
    7. Make sure that both PROTOCOL and MODE are set to BRIDGE
    8. Click on SET VC and then click OK when asked if you want to reset for new configuration to take affect
    9. Once again power off the modem for about a minute then power it back up
    10. Login again with the login you created above and go to the STATUS/ABOUT column and write down the MAC address
    11. Set it to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan Modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Write this down and keep it so you can access your modem in the future.
    12. Save the settings. You will lose communication with the Westell at this point. Once again, power down the modem for about a minute.
    13. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem into the Internet port on the Linksys router and then connect your Apple to the first ethernet spot
    14. Turn on both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    15. With your browser (Safari or Firefox) type in 192.168.1.1. Under SETUP go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE and enter the MAC address you wrote down for your Westell modem earlier and then save the settings
    16. Make sure you are in DHCP mode and not PPPoE
    17. Save, exit, and you should be on-line
That was a lot more difficult than it had to be. I certainly didn't get this from the support folks from Linksys or Verizon...a lot of trial and error and investigating on-line. I hope this saves you from the headaches I experienced.

    Feedback for Linksys:
In the Linksys Help system "Easy Answers" there's the question "How can I set up a Linksys router with DSL Internet?" This is what I used to try and solve my Internet connection problem.
The Answer says "Most DSL providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) ..." and goes on to explain how to set up the router for PPPoE. However, my service (AT&T/Yahoo high speed internet) uses DHCP. That meant I spent several frustrating hours trying to get it to work with PPPoE.
The Answer would have been better if it first explained how to tell if you have PPPoE or DHCP (see the reply from vness above, it's an excellent explanation), and then linked to the appropriate setup instructions.
    Thanks for the help!!!!

  • Modem and/or Router problem?

My old modem and router are connected to my pc and I could get on the internet using the airport on my mac. I had to get a new modem and now my mac won't connect to the internet. It is giving me the following error message: "IP Configuration 192.168.1.64 in use by 00:11:09:13:c8:9b, DHCP Server 192.168.1.254". What does this mean and how can I connect to the internet again? Someone please help me. Thank you.

    Problem Fixed.
I finally got a hold of someone who knows what they are doing at my router's company, Dynex.
First, she had me hold down the reset button on my router for 20 seconds.
Then she had me go to my PC's browser and type in the address 192.168.2.1, which brought me to the Dynex home page.
On the left side, under Wireless, choose Channel and SSID.
Under SSID, remove the router name Dynex and type in any other name (example Puppy).
    Apply changes.
In mac, open Network, and Airport.
Find Puppy network name, highlight it, and join network.
    Connection to internet was successful.

  • DSL Modem and Wireless Router problems

I started to have problems on Tuesday.
    My Equipment is:
Dell Precision 870 PC with a Intel Pro network card
Apple IMAC with the Apple Lan connection
    Lynksys/Cisco E3000 (Problem started with a Linksys WRT610N router)
    Verizon (Actiontec) GT701C DSL modem
I came down to my office and I noticed that the DSL light on my modem was not lit.  In the past
this has ment that there is a problem in the Central Office.  Later in the day I got hold of Verizon
tech support and we got the DSL running again with the modem connected to either computer.
When I connect the router to the modem and the computers to the router, Dell via wire and Apple
via wireless 5.0 GHz 802.11N inout and restart both the router and the modem, I get connectivity
through the router and the modem but the DSL light on the modem is not lit.  After a long period
of time the DSL light may come on then I loose connectivity.
Everything was working correctly til late Monday night/early Tuesday morning.
I have reset both the modem and routers to factory defaults several time.  I have a problem when
trying to get connectivity with the moden after setting it up again and it takes me to the Verizon
DSL startup site.  Tech support walked me throuogh using the "192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect" and
shutting the redirect off.  I then have connectivity as long as the router is not connected.
I thoought the router went so I just installed a new router, the Linksys/Cisco E3000, and I still
    have the DSL light problem.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Having both routers the same IP address is a little bit confusing, but possible since each router creates it's own subnet and provides full PNAT support. Actiontec DSL modem has to have DHCP enabled since Linksys WAN (not LAN) port should be connected to one of 4 Actiontec LAN ports. Linksys should not have any configuration setup in regards of your WAN account. Just set it to dynamic address. In ohter words:
    1. RJ-11 connect to Actiontec mode/router.
    2. Actiontec modem should be configured to acquire an IP address from Verizon and to provide all authentication info to Verizon.
    3. Actiontec modem should be configured to allow clients to acquire dynamic IP addresses -- DHCP enabled.
    4. Linsys WAN (not LAN!) port should be connected to Actiontec LAN port.
    5. Linksys should be configured to acquire dynamic IP address and no authentifacations.
    6. Configure Linksys to be DHCP enabled or you can use static IP addresss if you want.
    7. Wireless devices would be connected to Linksys and on the way to the Internet addresses would go through double NAT conversions. Any wired device connected to Linksys would have similar  features. Any device connected to Linksys should be able to connect 192.168.1.1 assigned to Linksys, but not to Actiontec.
    8. To be able to connect Linksys and Actiontec would no be able to communicate unless you split 192.168.1.0/24 into smaller subnets and set specific routes in the table. But even you do so you will not be able to access 192.168.1.1 accross subnets boundary.
    Hope it helps.

  • Suggestions for Cable Modem and Wireless Router

    Hey everyone!
I have the new iMac and would like to have a faster wireless router. Currently using an old D-Link Wireless G router and would like something like the Time Capsule (as it has Airport Extreme in it) or Netgear Rangemax Dual Band Wirless-N Gigabit Router. My problem is, my Internet is through my cable company, so it comes into the house as a cable connection. It appears that these two combos would still require the use of a cable modem.
Any suggestions to keep the equipment down to one piece? If not, any suggestions for a cable modem so I can return this old one to the cable company?
What would be the best/quickest wireless router?
    Thanks for your help!

Go to your ISP's web site and do a search from your ISP for compatible cable modems. Then buy the capable modem your ISP says that is comp[atible. On the new cable modem find the Serial number & MAC address, make then call your ISP tech help desk and tell them the new modem you got and he/she will ask you that information. When the ISP tech says they can see/ping that new cable modem then it will work. Then connect a new cheaper Airport Extreme and any external USB2 hard drive to connect to that new Airport Extreme. I say this because Apple put out and Update a little while ago that will allow an external connected to an Extreme as a Time Machine disk.
PS: Remember the old trick of checking you Ethernet cables. I can't count how times I have seen professionals install all new high speed switches, routers, etc. and wonder why no speed is seen. Then after numerous trouble shooting they discover they used the old 10 Base T cables and just changing the cable solved their problem.
Just make sure you do this one at a time starting with getting the ISP compatible cable modems list to know what cable modem you can buy (to save that monthly ISP rental fee). Then you can get the going as long as so speak with your ISP tech to give them that new cable modem Serial number and MAC address so they can register it with their servers.
This will be to easy as long as you do things in step.

  • Can I use an Airport Extreme as a modem and wireless router?

I realize this shows my ignorance, but I am wondering if I need to lease my isp's (Comcast) modem or if I can use and Airport Extreme instead.  Thanks for your help.

AirPort Extreme is a router only.....no modem on board.....so you will need a modem to work with the AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to access the Internet.

  • Motorola Surfboard (combination modem and wireless router) plus Airport time Capsule - 2TB

I am reading all of the discussion posts regarding the new OS Lion and starting to become wary. Here is my pridicament:
I have 3 PS3 game consoles (2 are wirelessly connected to the Motorola Surfboard),
3 PC laptops (also wirelessly connected to the Motorola Surfboard)
My thoughts were to purchase the Airport Time Capsule with the new IMac and possibly set up a wired connection to the Motorola Surfboard with the Airport Time Capsule, then provide a wireless connection for all of the  Apple products in my home as well as a back up file system. Mind you I have 3 IPhones, 2 IPads, and will be purchasing a new IMac with Retina Display and an HP - LaserJet Pro MFP M1217nfw Network-Ready Wireless Black-and-White All-In-One Printe. Will this be too much on one modem? and has anyone else even tried this type of configuration?
As smart as I think I am, I am hesitant on making this purchase, and sometimes I feel that sales reps at retail stores tend to be over confident in their knowledge of a wireless home system.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

... Will this be too much on one modem?
    Certainly not.
The limiting factor is likely to be your ISP's delivered speed. Whatever bandwidth you have will be shared among all the devices. If they're all streaming video at the same time, for example, one or more of them may become slow.
You don't need to purchase a Time Capsule simply because you're buying a new Mac. The iMac can join any network.
The Time Capsule can replace the router function of your existing combination modem / router, or it can join your network as either a wireless or wired client. If you want to use it for Time Machine backups, you should favor the latter. It can also create an additional wireless access point if you so choose. The Time Capsule is a very capable full-featured router but if you don't need a router or additional access point, then you can use any external HD for Time Machine backups. That would be a lot less expensive.
Lion has already been superseded by Mountain Lion. A new iMac will ship with Mountain Lion installed.
Only certain model MacBook Pros and iPads have a "retina display" - no iMacs.

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme with cable modem and router?

    Hi--
I'm having a house built and all of the wiring for TV, phone, and internet will be centralized in a closet. The cable modem can be placed there as well. In one room in the basement I want to use my Airport Extreme for my iMac and USB external hard drives. In another location of the basement, I'd like to set up a Time Capsule for another desktop and USB printer. If the cat5e comes out of the wall at each location, I "think" I need a router at the closet location. I also thought I might need an Airport Express upstairs on first or second floor to boost signal for my laptop. The house isn't that big so maybe that's overkill. So beyond the router question, do I want to set up a roaming network and have the Airport Express connected via ethernet or just wireless if the thought is that I need this? Finally, if I should connect cable modem to router to Airport Extreme, Time Capsule, etc., in what order and ports does the equipment get connected? Many thanks!!

Welcome to the discussions, Forum Girl!
It would be best to position the cable modem and main router in the central location like the closet if possible. The other devices would connect via ethernet to the wall jacks in each room.
If you could setup a "roaming" wireless network as you mention, this will give you better wireless performance and coverage. This is the way commercial establishments like airports, businesses, etc. are configured for wireless.
The order of connection would go something like this: ethernet connection > cable modem >main router>devices. Devices could be computers, routers, a backup device, etc. Since the Extreme has only 3 LAN ports for ethernet connections, you will also need to plan to install an "ethernet switch" near the location of the main router to provide enough ethernet jacks. If you are planning to use DirectTV, etc or your audio/video devices require ethernet connections (most new products do for updates and extra features), be sure to plan for that as well.
Make sure that CAT5e or CAT6 wiring is run so you will be able to take advantage of faster gigabit speeds.
Finally, it would be a good idea to work with an IT specialist to go over your plans to make sure all the bases are covered. This would be money well spent.

  • Comcast "activated" my NETGEAR CG3000D and disabled my wifi

I have spent most of the day today (6 hours or so), on the phone and online chat with Comcast customer service. We have been attempting to determine why, after I went through Comcast's website to activate my NETGEAR CG3000D wireless gateway, my computer will no longer recognize my network. It recognized it just fine before the activation - not at all after. I have been shuttled back and forth between various customer service reps, including a couple chats with Tier 2 support, before getting a couple #s for Signature Support Wireless Networking. There, I was told, once again, that it is a NETGEAR issue. This, despite the fact that it was working perfectly the very moment prior to activation, and not at all after. Several times today, at the suggestion of various customer service agents, I have hard reset my equipment and power cycled my equipment. I have had service for less than a week now, haven't turned on my TV and have yet to get on the internet (other than through the free xfinitywifi connection). After wasting an entire day of my own I am ready to call off the Comcast experiment.
Comcast flat out denied that what I said happened, could actually happen. I’m left with the feeling that resolving this issue is made intentionally difficult in order to persuade (strong-arm) Comcast customers into renting a gateway from them for the going rate of $10/mo. Several times today it was strongly suggested to me that I take advantage of this “free” solution…anyone have any suggestions that don’t involve selling my soul to the Comcast devil and actually renting a gateway?

Morris_: A tech installed a modem, yes. A ZOOM, which I won't use. I have a NETGEAR gateway. It's a modem and a router in one unit. Prior to online activation this morning, my laptop recognized my network. Post activation, it does not.
Morris_: I have been on the phone with various customer support people most of the day and lost an entire day of productivity to this issue. Tier 2 support says everything is fine and cannot see how activation would disable the router portion of my gateway. Which is on your approved list, by the way.

    Sheryl: Yes that is correct.\
Morris_: This is what I found when I researched the issue: http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Home-Networking-Router-WiFi/Netgear-CG3000D-Comcast-has-destroyed-my-modem/td-p/2269301
Sheryl: Did a tech install the modem or did you set it up yourself?

Morris_: A tech installed the modem, but that's irelevent. I don't use the modem. I am trying to use a gateway device.

Sheryl: yes, I understand. Than kyou for the confirmation.
Morris_: This gateway worked fine prior to online activation this morning. I have pasted link to what the issue appears to be. There are more.
Sheryl: I am seeing that the Netgear CG3000DV2 is offline.
Sheryl: Is there a reset button on it?
Morris_: Yes, which I've used 4 times already today, based on customer service recommendations.
Sheryl: Thank you. I would have to send a tech for you.
Morris_: I have also power cycled the unit multiple times.
Sheryl: I understand that the service is workign before the tech left right?
    Morris_: At waht cost?
Sheryl: Let me check if we can waive the tech fee for you since this is a new install.

    Sheryl: I am still here.
Morris_: Dunno if it was or not, I didn't have router to test it out. That's why I'm using my gateway, which worked fine prior to online activation.
    Morris_: Thank you
Sheryl: By gateway, are you referring to what device?

Sheryl: Is (50 425-9520 a good callback number?
Morris_: The NETGEAR I mentioned at hte beginning
    Morris_: Yes
    Morris_: That is my #
    Sheryl: Thank you.
Morris_: This is the unit I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IF0JAYE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00IF0JAYE&linkCode=as2&tag=myde0bd-20
Sheryl: Are you directly connected to the netgear modem?
Sheryl: That means wired is working, but wifi is not, is that correct?

Morris_: Please read this, and the other links I included. I am not the only one having issues with Comcast and this particular gateway.

    Morris_: R u there?
    Sheryl: I am.
Sheryl: Let me just confirm, Morris.
Sheryl: Wired connection is okay but wifi is not, is that correct?
Morris_: Yes, I am directly connected. I have internet when i am wired, no wireless access at all. My computer no longer, since online activation, will recognize my network.
Sheryl: We do have a dedicated tier 2 support for wifi.
Sheryl: I would have to refer you to call them if the issue is isolated to wifi.
Sheryl: If it is affecting wired connection, I would need to send a tech.
    Sheryl: Thank you.
Sheryl: Let me get their number for you so they can remotely access your Wireless Gateway.
Morris_: I have spoken with them at least twice today in my 4 or 5 hours of phone time today with customer support. Their solution is for me to buy a new gateway.
Sheryl: Please give me 2 minutes.
Sheryl: My apologies, but I an from wired connection. Our Tier 2 support would be the one to confirm that.
Sheryl: Let me get their direct number for you.
Morris_: My gateway was working fine prior to online activation through the Comcast website.
Sheryl: I understand. I am sure that our Tier 2 will be able to resolve it.
Morris_: I have l already spoken with them at least twice today. They tell me to buy a new gateway, and ignore the fact that it worked prior to online activation via the COmcast website.
Sheryl: As a resolution, I am referrign you to call Sigature Support Wireless Networking 801-657-3754 or 855-308-9454 .
Sheryl: I have noted that on the account.
Morris_: Please send a tech and waive the fee.
Sheryl: They will be able to see that it is working fine. there could just be some settings on the router that needs to be rechecked.
Morris_: I have lost an entire day to this and am at the point where I am barely hanging onto my sanity. They don't recognize it. Is it possible for me to chat online with them so I can send them the links I sent you?
Sheryl: They are only available by phone, but they have remote access to your comuter
Sheryl: they will be able to see that.
    Sheryl: Please do call them.
The analyst has left and your issue has been closed.
    Waiting for response from Sheryl
Sheryl: They will be sendign a tech if needed.

I just had this happen to me.  Wireless on the same device: bricked!  I saw on another link that it is a action by comcast to reconfigure the device.  Question is, can they configure it back?  On my very dissatisfactory conversation with support, the person incoherently told me that I would have to have "another wireless router in order to manage it."  In response to my saying that the ip addressing, the management interface, the username/password had all changed and SSID disappeared.  I have found on another website that username is  cususer and password is highspeed these actually worked (to my utter amazement).  Unfortunately there is no wireless component in the management options.  GONE.  Question is: can they revert it to original condition if and when I cancel the service.
