Network install through multicast ASR

*Environment*
Server: Mac OS X server tiger 10.4.11 serving DHCP
Clients: Over 50 MacBooks
**What I want to complete**
Client MacBooks will boot from the server and retrieve the image loaded on the server through multicast asr so that I can install 50 laptops at one time from single image
**What I have done**
Run the "asr -source /Images/client.dmg -server /Users/administrator/Desktop/asr.plist" and got "Ready to start accepting clients". (client.dmg was built by using Bombich's NetRestore Helper)
**Problem I got**
When booting up the Macbook clients by holding down the "N" key, the clients could not boot from network to retrieve the image successfully
**Questions I have**
1. On the server, what services do I need to run other than the DHCP service?
2. What else did I miss?
Thanks much!

Thanks very much for the quick response, foilpan.
I now start the Netboot and NFS services. On the NetBoot Settings, I have the Ethernet Port enabled and the Client.dmg image enabled and set as Default, Protocol is NFS. The Architecture is PowerPC, I want to change it to Intel but it grayed out and I can't change it. (The Client.dmg is built from a Snow Leopard machine.)
But it is still not working when tried to boot the client. The client got no problem getting an IP from the server. I can see that from the DHCP service.
Anything I did wrong? Does the Architecture matter?
Thanks much again!

  • Win 7 x64 LJ2100tn network install

I could use some new ideas about installing a Laserjet 2100tn through a network with a Linksys wrt54GS router. Printer works fine on network through XP, with 3 desktops, 1 laptop and 1 netbook.  Tried the HP network diagnostic through XP and it can't find the printer - used Ping and telnet to i.p. address and they can't find it either - but printer WORKS fine. Looks like the printer currently runs under IPX.
In Win 7 x64 I tried all the new drivers from HP, and installation for PCL 5, 6 and PS but the printer installation routines can't find the printer. Deleted and re-installed about a billion times (roughly) in the last week. Updated router firmware, and drivers for motherboard and ethernet connection.
I won't switch to Win 7 until I work out some fix for this.
Thanks to all that can send suggestions.

Try accessing the embedded web server by typing the IP address of the printer in a browser on the PCs. Maybe a firewall on the PC is interfering with the HP software finding the printer and with ping. You could also try temporarily turning off any/all firewall software running on the Win 7 PC to see if this might be the problem.
You could also try HP's free Webjet Admin software to see if it helps with finding the printer or diagnosing the problem.
    http://h20338.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/cache/332262-0-0-225-121.html
Also, a few notes for what they are worth:
    1) Window 7 doesn't support IPX (so if you are really trying to use IPX and not using additional software to provide IPX support on the PC, that could be a problem). But the standard TCP port for HP printers is 9100, the software should be trying to send PCL to port 9100 (when it can find the printer). I believe the network implementation in this printer does support IPX and so it could very well be what the XP PCs were set up to use.
    2) This printer uses a JetDirect card for networking. The network diagnostic that I think you are referring to was designed for inkjet printers which use a different networking implementation (mostly the same functionality but different implementation), so this diagnostic might have some troubles working with this printer.
    Hope something here is helpful.

  • Solaris 10 Network Install TFTP problem

    Hi,
I tried to create jumpstart through network install with Solaris 10.
I'm running into trouble of TFTP problem when trying to add_install_client.
Here is the error I got:
    ./add_install_client xxx sun4u
svcprop: Couldn't find object for FMRI "network/tftp/udp6:default/:properties/restarter/st ate".
    enabling network/tftp/udp6 service
svcadm: Pattern 'network/tftp/udp6' doesn't match any FMRIs, ignoring
On the client side, when I do "boot net - install", I get ARP/RARP error, obviously, the TFTP was not set up right on the server.
I could not find tftpd on the server, anyone has any suggestion what I should do to get tftpd running?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
i don't now, why it is like it is, there is no xlm manifest for the smf, but there is a "simple"solution:
edit the /etc/inet/inetd.conf, unremark the line for tftpd. Than, when restarting the inetd with "kill -HUP <prozessnumber of inetd", you get a message in /var/adm/messages:
......... inetd[185]: [ID 702911 daemon.warning] Configuration file /etc/inet/inetd.conf has been modified since inetconv was last run. "inetconv -i /etc/inet/inetd.conf" must be run to apply any changes to the SMF
Just do what it say's: "inetconf -i /etc/inet/inetd.conf", and you get the smf entry:
    # svcs | grep tftp
    online 19:05:27 svc:/network/tftp/udp6:default
now it is online, and you can stop and start it with svcadm.

  • Applications Installed through task sequence not showing up in Software Center

In the task sequence we use for our OSD Windows 7 machine build, we have Custom-Install Application steps which install a number of of our Applications.  Each of these Applications has the "Allow this application to be installed from the Install
Application task sequence action without being deployed" checkbox checked.  All of the Applications have the following properties set:
    Installation behavior: Install for system
Logon requirement: Whether or not a user is logged in
    Installation program visibility: Hidden
When a machine is built using this task sequence, all of the Applications install successfully - they show up in Control Panel\Programs and Features, and they run correctly. However, none of them show up in the Software Center. I'm not seeing anything in
any of the logs that indicates a problem, and the Software Center remains empty even after running all the client evaluation cycle actions
Interestingly, if I add a couple of the newly build machines to a collection, then target deployments for the already installed Applications to that collection, after running the Machine Policy Retrieval and Evaluation Cycle the Applications immediately
show up in Software Center as installed.
Does anyone know if Applications installed through a task sequence do not show up in the Software Center by default, or could you give me some troubleshooting tips if this is not normal?
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    SCCM 2012 SP1, Single site, W7 clients

Why you deploy applications through task sequences? Task sequences are built and meant to be used with OSD, not application deployment.
To my knowledge, if you have application install step in a task sequence and you deploy that task sequence to a collection of machines, the software center on those machines only sees the task sequence itself, not the applications inside the task sequence.
If you want your applications to be shown in the software center, change the method of deploying stuff and deploy applications as they're are meant to.

  • Does OS installed through boot camp or in virtual machine has access and full control of the peripherals like native OS X Lion?

I am planning to buy new PC for my faculty needs and this time I am thinking to buy Apple laptop like Mac book Pro 13" or so ( I owe already IPhone and Ipad 2)
To make final decision I need few information . These are:
    1. May I use Boot Camp or similar utility software to install Windows 7 OS next to OS X Lion, or use some kind of virtual box software to create virtual machines with diverse guest OS in them like Windows , Linux etc.?
    2. Does OS installed through Boot camp or in virtual machine has access and full control of the peripherals like native OS X Lion?
    3. May I use the same disk partitions to access to the files regardless if I am using Windows 7 or OS X Lion operating system?
    4. Is there full compatibility between Microsoft Office under OS X Lion and Windows 7 M. Office?
    5. What is general user experience with OS X Lion operating system comparing to Windows 7?
Thanks for  sharing your experience with me.

    1. Yes. You can install Windows 7 natively using Boot Camp Assistant or you can install Windows 7 in a virtual machine using Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox
    2. If installed using Boot Camp Assistant Windows 7 uses all your computer's resources just as OSx does. If installed using a VM Windows 7 will share the computer's resources with OSx.
    3. A Boot Camp partition is separate from the OSx partition. The VMs allow sharing of files across partitions since both OS are running at the same time.
    4. No, not 100%.
    5. Too broad a question. Be specific about what feature you are asking about or search the Internet for comparisons. I use both and find they both work well.

  • Acrobat 9.0 Network install not removing reader or supressing license

I am running a network install created by the customization wizard of Acrobat 9. In the wizard I told it to remove all versions of reader and Acrobat and suppress the user agreement. The program installs but users have to agree ULA, and reader 7 is still there and default.
It seems as though the MST is not being read during the install process. I have checked the setup.ini and it is pointing at the correct MST file. I have also used this same install in other remote offices without issue.
    Any Ideas?

Are you installing the package directly from the .msi file? If so, you'll need to specify your custom transforms by using the transforms property. For example,
    msiexec /i AcroRead.msi transforms=AcroRead.mst /qb

  • Excel 2013 installed through 365 crashes when small row is in spreadsheet

    Hi,
I have major issue with Excel files that makes Excel stop working when trying to print.
Excel crashes already at the preview pane and it has nothing todo with print driver, it crashes if using the XPS driver as well.
Using Excel installed locally through 365 (All patches applied)
By searching for formatting error in the spread sheet I found out that there were a couple of rows that had very small height and removing those (or increasing them) made Excel not crashing when trying to print.
This excel file is actually working on other installations of Exel 2013 but it seemes to only cause problems on the Excel 2013 installed through 365.
When I found the problem and that it seemes only to be on the 365 Excel I also found another user with same problem but no solution. (community.office365.com/en-us/forums/172/t/168863.aspx)
In my case I have several hundred Excel files and most of them are password protected which makes it impossible to fix the rows manually.
It is not a problem on traditional installed Excel 2013 or earlier versions... So I would say it is a bug with the 365 version of Excel.
Anyone out there with a solution or how to report this to Microsoft?

I would escalate the issue and someone who is more familiar with this kind of issue to deal with this problem.
    Thank you for your feedback.

  • Include all updates for Office 2010 PP during custom network install

    Hello...
I'm currently doing a custom network install of Office 2010 Professional Plus 32bit edition. The custom install is working fine with the MSP file in the \Updates folder.
I would now like to add all of the current updates, hotfixes, and service packs to the \Update folder so that Office 2010 is completely up-to-date when being deployed. I understand that I need to put the MSP files for these updates, hotfixes, and service
    packs in the \Updates folder.
    A couple questions:
1 - Is there one place that I can download all of the Office 2010 PP 32bit edition updates, hotfixes, and service packs... Excluding any 64bit edition updates? A repository of some sort?
2 - I'm assuming that if the hotfixes, and updates are downloaded as .CAB, I first need to extract it, get the .MSP file and put that into the \Updates folder?
3 - I think Service Packs come down as .exe's??!! If so, do I just put the .exe files in the \Update folder as well or do I need to run something special to extract them like I do with the .CAB files
I appreciate any help someone can give. If there is a better way to accomplish this, I'm open to all suggestions :)
    Thanks... Frank

    2. Yes, we need to get the .MSP file (BTW, the hotfixes are download as .exe file)
    3. Yes, we need to get the .MSP file

  • How to force Windows Mobile Professional device to use only Wi-fi network provisioned through Afaria 7 SP4

    Hi
We are deploying Windows Mobile Professional devices on our environments. All the devices connects only to internal network through Wi-fi.  Our security policy do not allow these devices to be connected to any other network (Other Wi-fi, Cellular etc).  Is there any way to force the devices to use only the Wi-fi network provisioned through Afaria.

I have the same problem with an early 2013 macbook pro. gfxCardStatus ( http://gfx.io/ ) will allow you to force integrated and not do dynamic switching, however the external display still doesn't work.

  • Adobe Reader 11.0 won't install through firefox - click save and then nothing else happens

Adobe Reader 11.0 won't install through firefox - I click save file when requested it switches to Step 2 of 3 but nothing is there and I have waited for a very long time for it to load.  Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi Pat,
After your last email I decided to continue to trouble shoot the problem and finally found the answer from another user.  Oddly enough when using Firefox it will default to a location on your computer to save downloads.  If it encounters a problem it doesn't identify it, the program just "loops" back to the start of the download sequence.  Once I changed the folder that the downloads are sent to the original way of upgrading occurred without fault.
I will go back into the discussion group and credit you with the answer because I really appreciate your assistance.
    Thank you, Jim

  • LR 4.1 installed through AAM, How do I upgrade to 4.2?

This may seem like a stupid question, but I want to reduce the possibility of screwing up my current Creative Cloud installs.
    Background
I have a Creative Cloud membership w/ several applications installed through AAM.  All show as "installed" as I'd expect and seem to function just fine.
    AAM Application Updating
Some applications automatically install updates through the AAM -- that is, they update automatically.  For example just today PS CS6 and Premier Pro CS6 updated via the AAM update process, first notifying me via the AAM icon that there was an update, then allowing me to choose to go ahead with it -- all through AAM.
BUT, Lightroom doesn't seem to do this.  I was notified of an update to Lightroom (4.2) when I opened the application.
The notification indicated I should download and install it.
    My Questions
Should I go ahead and uninstall LR4.1, then reinstall LR from AAM?  (this assumes AAM is now updated to install LR4.2 vs. LR4.1)
    -- Or --
Should I run the LR4.2 download over my existing AAM installed LR4.1?   (seems like this isn't usually a good idea)
    -- Or --
Should I uninstall LR4.1, then install LR4.2 via the downloaded updater?  (seems this might cause trouble w/ AAM showing that LR is not "installed")
I've got a recently setup machine and have everything working as desired, so I'd prefer not to have to revert or clean up something caused by my not taking the appropriate updating path.  I've done several searches both via Google and here and found nothing noting the difference between LR and other AAM installed apps for updates -- so I'm left puzzling what I should be doing for this upgrade to LR4.2...
Any assistance would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Bonnie

Some additional info relating to my 4.1 to 4.2 upgrade and LR CC (Creative Cloud) installs as a whole is here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4782301#4782301
So far I'm hoping that I'll be able to remove the 4.1 version without negative impact on 4.2 which is now installed in a non-default directory.
The overall upgrade process does not mirror that for other CC apps.  Instead it follows its own path.
Check the link above for more info.
    Cheers,

  • Network Install with wireless

I'm attempting to help a friend install Arch. Network card is BCM4312 (on an ACER laptop), an iwconfig returns with no wireless devices found on lo or eth0, the two interfaces output. We would like to do a network install. The wiki doesn't specify how to deal with iwconfig being unsuccessful; is there anything to do, or should we plug an ethernet cable in and install, then configure wireless with drivers post install (and would that work)?

sorry, yeah setting up the wireless once the initial install is done shouldn't be a problem.  I believe my old laptop had the same wireless card, and it wasn't hard to setup at all, i just followed the wireless wiki.  I usually wait to setup the wireless until after the base install.
