Network Manager: Problem using Mobile Broadband

Hello,
I'm trying to use NetworkManager to configure an Internet connection using a 3G modem USB dongle.
I have a Huawei E160 on O2.
Steps taken so far:
* Installed NetworkManager using the ArchWiki article:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager
* nm-applet would not start, and the error on the virtual terminal matched that in the troubleshooting section of that article. I backed up and changed those 2 files. I don't know much about PolicyKit but nm-applet started and was able to connect to a WiFi network.
* I tried connecting to O2: the device was detected but on attempting to connect, the nm-applet connecting icon froze or stuttered (as in the animation was about 0.2fps).
* Errors on the tty indicated that nm was looking for files that did not exist. After searching I found a package 'mobile-broadband-provider-info' on LaunchPad which is included in Ubuntu. I found it in the AUR and installed it.
* Tried again, same behaviour of the icon, but this time errors on the tty resembled the errors that occured when nm-applet would not start.
I'm guessing the problem is with the PolicyKit configuration in the 2 files:
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-applet.conf
If we can put together a general solution to 3G modems (rather than my specific problem), I will be willing to help out with the relevant wiki articles (probably after my exams).
Thank you very much for your help,
James Haigh.

Hooray! It's working!
I booted into Arch to run nm-applet from the terminal emulator to collect the exact error message to post, but then I noticed the mast icon!
I couldn't figure out why this now worked but I wondered if Ubuntu had sort of initialised the modem somehow (when I started this thread using the LiveCD, that was the first time I'd got it to work).
I don't think it was the restart because I'm pretty sure I restarted after installing mobile-broadband-provider-info.
So I started to read the new replies. I thought I'd set pacman to download (and install) arch-wiki-docs while I write a reply. My USB wireless mouse stuttered and stopped working. I tried replugging it, syncing it, wouldn't work. The download which was going at about 20KB/s (I thought this was due to bad reception; my O2 phone gets 1 or 2 notches here at college), stuttered and spewed out errors.
My tablet PC annoyingly has only 2 USB ports and no CD drive. So to use a LiveCD, keyboard and dongle I had to use a hub. I left the hub in when I booted Arch, and unplugging it fixed my mouse and dongle. The download went about 100KB/s!
But I wasn't using the hub before I used the LiveCD. I was just using the keyboard and dongle, and a great Firefox add-on called LoL, which makes browsing with no mouse easier.
(If interested, this list including LoL is useful:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo … n/keyboard )
So the initial problem is at least 1 of these:
* Bad reception
* Ubuntu initialised the modem but my installation/configuration of Arch could not
* I forgot to restart if/when it mattered
And the 2nd problem was the hub.
These weren't problems:
* ConsoleKit configuration
* Settings
I tried to understand those 2 files using GVim's diff with the backups and I couldn't see anything to try, so I left them unchanged.
My settings are in the manual for the dongle. They're not in mobile-broadband-provider-info so I will file a bug to make it easier for Ubuntu users etc. Looking at /usr/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.xml I made this:
<apn value="m-bb.o2.co.uk">
<name>Pay & Go</name>
<username>o2bb</username>
<password>password</password>
</apn>
The manual also says that:
* Tel no: *99# (which appears to be default and is never specified in serviceproviders.xml)
* Authentication: PAP (Also not specified, the default of try all methods works for me)
I could add a mobile broadband subsection to the troubleshooting section of the wiki article:
* Check signal
* Check USB
And add relevant links on articles like 'USB_3G_Modem' etc.
owain wrote:...I felt a bit let down that some update, somewhere, had changed my settings without letting me know (there certainly wasn't a pacsave or pacnew which I'd missed).
I like pacman and I like the way upgrading my system is my responsibility but that shouldn't have happened without a message. I'll be aware of things like this now, thanks.

To install packages from the AUR, I suppose I'd have to:
* look at the PKGBUILD and figure out what files I need
* download the files onto my hard drive and save relevant wiki articles
* restart and boot into Arch
* modify the PKGBUILD
* build and install.
Also, command line configuration of connections might not be very practical at college; if something goes wrong I won't be able to access the ArchWiki, Google or other help. Although it might be worth a try.
Yeah that sounds about right (except you don't need to modify the PKGBUILD, just place the downloaded files in the same folder as the PKGBUILD and run makepkg).
That's useful to know.
Once you've got your internet running you can install 'community/arch-wiki-docs' for offline wiki access.
Thank you so much! This could be a life saver! I've installed it.
If you're in the UK, mkwvconf output for O2 is:
I will explore this alternative sometime. For something as important as this, a backup plan is useful. I've been using netcfg for WiFi for quite some time before I installed nm. It'd be great to use netcfg (and the nice menu) with wvdial.
Thank you all very much,
James.

  • User having trouble connecting to VPN using mobile broadband card

    I've got a user with a laptop running Windows 7 who is trying to use an AT&T mobile broadband card to connect to a VPN using the Cisco IPSec VPN client. The card is the Sierra Wireless Momentum 4G. The VPN connection established fine, but no traffic gets passed after that. Other users can connect to the VPN fine (not using mobile broadband, though). Wired and wireless connections from this laptop are able to get to the VPN fine. It's just over the mobile broadband service that this happens. Are there any workarounds for this issue?

    Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    To use the proprietary BB services (including Push email capability, native browser, BBM, etc.), you must have an adequate data plan from your carrier. The carriers host BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) for their BB users. Typically, BIS is not available via generic data plans. Many carriers call what is necessary The Blackberry Data Plan. Whatever they call it, it is the carrier who delivers BIS to their BB users -- contact them for assistance. Once you have a BIS-capable data plan on your BB (at whatever fees your carrier will charge, btw), your BB-proprietary services will function (e.g., you will have Personal/Internet Email added to the email setup wizard, your BBM will function, etc).
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/What_do_I_need_a_Data_Plan_for%3F
    With hundreds of carriers in the world, each with dozens of different data plans, it's impossible to tell you specifically what any service plan might actually provide. Only the carriers can answer that question. The best thing to do is to decide what services you desire, and then talk to your carrier about obtaining (from them) a data plan that enables what you desire.
    Good luck!

  • Gnome-network-manager problems

    Hello all,
    I'm trying to use gnome-network-manager to connect to my wifi as it is WEP enabled and I don't know how to get it working in 'network'.
    I followed this tutorial: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager
    However, when I reboot under those settings, I can't connect to anything, including ethernet.
    Is there a problem in the wiki or is there a workaround that hasn't been posted there yet? I'm utterly confused as to why it will not work.
    Also, if you need me to paste any code from any file, can you also tell me an easy way to copy/paste between aterm and Opera as I haven't found a way to do that yet.
    Thank you very much for any help.

  • Can't send mail when using mobile broadband

    Hi
    I am getting quite frustrated as I can't send mail when using my mobile broadband modem! I can receive mail, and surf the internet etc, but mail just wont send!(i get the usual cannot send try later/resend options). I thought this might be an issue with my mobile broadband but have recently reinstalled it. When at home on a wireless network I have no such issues.
    Any help appreciated
    Charlie

    I am not using a SMTP it is a Pop3 domain name account from freeparking and uses mail.'NAME'.com for incoming and outgoing mail!
    Even though your e-mail service uses the same URL for POP3 and SMTP servers, in the software sense you actually do have separate POP3 and SMTP servers, although they may be hosted on the same machine, or the requests are routed via some "smoke and mirrors" to the right host.
    It is not related to my ISP at home, which is Virgin media. My mobile broadband provider is 3. I was thinking it might be that I need to change the port settings in mail when using my mobile modem, but don't know what to change them too(or how to do it!) or configure the modem differently but again not sure what to do there!
    Check with the freeparking online help to see if it supports port 587 or some such.
    Also try Mail's "Connection Doctor" (under the Window menu) when you're away from home to see if that shows anything useful.
    Since you can send e-mail from that SMTP server when you're at home but not when you're using your mobile broadband, I think one of two possibilities is likely: (a) Your mobile broadband provider is blocking your attempts to access the freeparking SMTP server and/or port. (b) The freeparking SMPT server for some reason doesn't like being communicated with via your mobile broadband provider. I'd check with each of them to explore these options.
    Does your mobile broadband provider have an SMTP server that you can use instead of the freeparking one?
    My modem(Huawei E220) is not particularly Mac friendly as it is, and I believe Mail can be quite sensitive when servers don't respond immediately?
    Yes. Mail seems to have a fixed time-out value for server responses.

  • Install Arch using mobile broadband.

    Hey! Is it possible to install Arch Linux using a mobile broadband? If it is, how do I do it?
    I tried to modprobe usbserial but it wasn't found, can I get the module before the installation?
    Thanks for reading, Pics.

    Yes and no.
    Yes: ppp is on the installer CD, but nobody seems to know how to work with it. Try this and/or this.
    No: wvdial is not on the installer CD.
    Workaround: Put wvdial and wvstreams on a USB stick.
    There's been some discussion about inclusion of wvdial on the installer: http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 14388.html

  • HTC PDA deployment problem using Mobile Module

    Hi all,
    I am trying to connect my HTC PDA Kaiser (TyTN II) to a customized device using the miniUSB port. This PDA runs Windows Mobile 6, I am using Labview 8.6 (and I am using the Mobile Module - former PDA module) on Windows Vista.
    However, I am having a couple of issues trying to do this. Initially I am trying to discover, if the application deployed on the PDA using Mobile Module sees the miniUSB port as a virtual COM port (or serial). This would make my job much easier.
    Nevertheless, way before that,  I simply cannot deploy my application on the PDA because there are two files missing during the building process(attached file): windows.h and commctrl.lib, according to the message error.
    I was trying to follow the simple tutorial on http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371296d.pdf but the deployment process stops when I get this message. I installed all the necessary files (Virtual PC 2007, Windows Mobile Device Center and I think LV does the rest) and of course the mobile module. I read about the installation known issues, uninstalling Visual Studio 2008, reinstalling Labview like some of the threads suggested (http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&requireLogin=False&thread.id=132656) and still didn't work. I wouldn't go that far to reinstall Windows, would I?
    I know that it might be something related to a wrong path according to the attached log error file during the C generation code, however I am still not sure what's the path supposed to be!
    Does anyone could give any suggestions?
    Kind regards,
    Edgar Charry

    Hi Anna,
    Thanks for the reply. Yes, it is Windows Vista 32-bit Home.
    Certainly the reason is that the builder looks after these two files, that simply doesn't exist. I know it, because I looked for them, and found on the PocketPC2003 - smartphone folder (..\Labview 8.6\PDA\Utilities\VC\Smartdevices\SDK\PocketPC2003\include and lib). And the only one I can at  least emulate is indeed the PocketPC2003 SmartPhone!
    So, if your emulator for the Windows Mobile 6 platform works (emulates any VI), could you please give me the correct path of the Windows Mobile 6 and also the files? Here I have: ..\Labview 8.6\PDA\Utilities\VC\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\PocketPC\Deviceemulation\Pocket_PC (and a couple of others, which are pretty much empty - no header files or libraries there, just the PNG files of the figures of the emulators). That's it.
    I tried copying the lib and the include folders there, but also didn't work....
    Thanks Anna,
    Edgar Charry

  • Network(Manager) problems after messing with netctl

    Hello, and thanks for taking time helping me!
    The story so far:
    I was trying to bridge my wired and wireless network on my laptop, using netctl: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bridge_with_netctl

    My guess is that somewhere my bridge messed everything up. But as I've leared with arch the awser could be very simple.
    Thanks Again,

    I think I know what the problem is. I saw that a deamon called dhcpcd@wlp3S0 was running at the same time NetworkManager was. This would mean that both Networkmanager and netctl where running at the same time. I've disabled "dhcpcd@wlp3s0" and........ nothing.
    Does anyone knows witch daemons i should disable/enable to let the system run on networkmanager alone?

    Here is the problem: all three computers have been printing from the network printer for over 2 years with no problems whatsoever. As of late, all three stations are attempting to print unsuccessfuly with a message stating that the document cannot be printed because the printer could not be found. The error message asks if you would like to cancel printing or try again. After trying again the document successfully prints (sometimes after one attempt, other times after several attempts). The chooser is recognizing the printer and all settings seem to be correct. I have notice that when selecting the chooser the printer icon does not show up immediately. There appears to be a bit of a delay before the network recognizes it. The printing funtion will work, it is just a bit frustrating that you must sometimes make more than one attempt to print. It does not occur everytime you attempt to print, only most of the time.
    One more note, in conjuntion with this error, I have noticed that other applications running through the server will run lightning fast and then all of a sudden will seem to run very slow. When working within an application, windows will appear to freeze for a short time and them resume normally.
    Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    I personally use ElGato and it works great, and I too don't use the DVR functionality.

    Update your system - "pacman -Syu".  The clue is that the file you manually downloaded is different to the one pacman is trying to get.

  • Networkmanager: mobile broadband doesn't work anymore

    Hi,
    I had setup a mobile broadband connection for my Nokia N900, connected via USB, with the NetworkManager (Gmome 3) two or three weeks ago. It worked perfect. Yeserday I tried the internet connection again - after a couple of rolling updates (e.g. actual NetworkManager 0.8.999-1). Now, the internet connection doesn't work anymore.
    NetworkManager --no-daemon prints out the following:
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> Activation (ttyACM0) starting connection 'n900'
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> (ttyACM0): device state change: disconnected -> prepare (reason 'none') [30 40 0]
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> Activation (ttyACM0) Stage 1 of 5 (Device Prepare) scheduled...
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> Activation (ttyACM0) Stage 1 of 5 (Device Prepare) started...
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> Activation (ttyACM0) Stage 1 of 5 (Device Prepare) complete.
    NetworkManager[2944]: <warn> GSM modem enable failed: (32) Serial command timed out
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> (ttyACM0): device state change: prepare -> failed (reason 'modem-init-failed') [40 120 28]
    NetworkManager[2944]: <warn> Activation (ttyACM0) failed.
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> (ttyACM0): device state change: failed -> disconnected (reason 'none') [120 30 0]
    NetworkManager[2944]: <info> (ttyACM0): deactivating device (reason: 0).
    It seems, the modem cannot be initialized
    Using wvdial with the N900, the internet connection works still fine.
    What is the problem? Any ideas?

    Hi,
    I managed to solve. Only the downgrade did not work. My solution:
    1-Create the directory (if not existing)
    /var/lock
    2-Do not use package:
    kdeplama-network-management
    3-Use the package  (downgrade)
    extra/modemmanager 0.4-1 [instalado: 0.4-1]
    http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/04/30/extr … pkg.tar.xz
    4-Use the pachage (gnome)
    network-manager-applet
    5-Add dbus policy (If the file nm-applet.conf does not exist, create!)
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 39#p484839
    [root@DESTINY log]# cat /etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-applet.conf
