Network mounts no longer show up on desktop

Ever since I installed 10.5 my network mounts would show up on my desktop. Now, for some reason, they don't. One mount shows up under /Users/bob/Documents/smb and the other one shows up under /Volumes/blah. They used to show up on the desktop, but no more. Any ideas??
I checked finder settings and Connected Servers is checked. Not sure what to do now.
Thanks!

I think I just found out why- Go to finder->preferences->general->check connected servers and see if that helps.
I have an external HD connected to my extreme and it wouldn't show up on the desktop after upgrade to 10.5. After above it shows up.
Also, used tip from another post and went to system preferences->system->accounts->select account, login items, drag disk to login area (I had to go back to the finder and go to folder of AE HD and ctrl click and choose original view and then drag to auto login)
not sure if I am dorked up or upgrade missed something but now I have AE HD on desktop and can use pics from that drive on iphoto

  • Network drives do not show up on Desktop or in Sidebar

I have a user who is experiencing a weird problem. When they connect to a Windows server over our LAN, the server does not show on their desktop, nor does it show in the sidebar.
I have checked the boxes in Finder/Preferences to show network drives on the desktop and in the sidebar, but the network drives do not show up.
I have reproduced this on another Mac, a G4 also running 10.5.8 .
The windows servers do appear in Go/Network, and the user can connect to them, but they still don't show up on the desktop or the sidebar.
Does anyone have any good ideas about this?
    Thanks in advance!

Templeton, I'm sorry if my message wasn't clear, but I have already tried that.
I'm beginning to wonder if there might be some issue with this in 10.5.8, since this works on the Macs here with Snow Leopard, and it used to work when we had Macs on earlier versions of OS X.
Again, I'm open for any ideas on this.

  • 3G no longer shows up on desktop, spinning beach ball on iTunes launch

After playing with my new 3G all day, which included several successful syncs with iTunes, the iPhone no longer shows up on the desktop. iTunes launches automatically but just sits there with the spinning beach ball. Have to Force Quit. The iPhone also no longer displays Sync In Progress. Repaired Permissions, restarted, tried various combinations of plugging/unplugging the iPhone with no success. Any ideas?

I am having this problem too, but I just leave it plugged in and eventually it pops up. It has taken up to 3 minutes.
How long have you given it?

  • Why does my SC card no longer show up on desktop?

I have iMac.intel 10.8.5 OS. I use 2 sets (A1-A2 and B1-B2) of dual SD cards for 2 videography cameras. A1 and A2 are identical. B1 and B2 are identical. Initally all SD cards showed up on desktop. They erased in Disk Utility when I'd downloaded the data. Then suddenly w/ no changes to computer or software, only 1 card would show up when I inserted it into the SD slot.
If I insert 2nd card, nothing showed up on desktop, in finder or in disk utility. BUT, if I did a Restart, with the 2nd card in the slot, when the computer came back on, behold, there it was. I downloaded the contents, erased it in disk utility.
I need to erase 4 32 Gb SD cards and erase them. I'm currently rebooting 3 times to accomplish this.
It's a HUGE HUGE time sink to do this every time I want to download from cards. What's going on with the rebook solution? and how can I get back to better functioning? Solutions please. Thank you.

  • External hard drive no longer shows up on Desktop

    Hi everyone,
I did what a good person should do with a tech issue and did a long search through forums before I resigned to bothering you all with it.
I've had a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Media external hard drive for 6 months which up until this week, was showing up as an icon on my Desktop. I had named it Eid HD.
I suddenly am unable to access this drive on my MacBook Pro. The Desktop icon has disappeared but the drive still lights up as per normal. I'm using OS X v10.6.8
    I tried changing USB cables.
The drive appears in Disk Utility as follows (the yellow icons):
I read somewhere that I needed to mount it. The first yellow icon doesn't have the mount option. The second one (Eid HD) has the option but when I mount it, I get the following message:
    Mount Failed.
The disk “Eid HD” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.
I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
Tried to mount - same error message as above. Mount failed.
I downloaded Disk Warrior and although the drive appears in there, I can't do anything with it. The Graph and Rebuild buttons are both greyed out.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?
The files are still on the drive as I used it on a Windows machine to test it.
I don't want to format it.
Please help if you can, thank you in advance.
    Sam

I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
That quote is from your first post.  But I have some questions about that (maybe just to satisfy my own curiosity).
    1.  When you ran Disk Utility First Aid did you do it on the disk itself (the one that is enabled with the Seagate title)?
    2. That First Aid window title line says "First Aid: EID HD" yet my DU window title only shows the name exactly as it appears in the left panel, no "First Aid:" prefix.  So is that a change in 10.6.8 (I use 10.6.5)?
    3. You display shows lines like "Verifying folders", "Folders verification completed", and "Verifying $...".  Again I have never seen DU display that kind of info.  Another 10.6.8 change?
As I said, I am only curious.  It may not mean anything.  But I thought I would point out these details just in case.
If these aren't 10.6.8 changes (I find it hard to believe apple would change DU after all these years just from 10.6.5 to 10.6.8) then just what DU First Aid were you running?

  • Mounted Volume Not Showing On Desktop or Sidebar

Our company uses a Mac Mini running OS 10.10 Yosemite to share files. File Sharing is setup to share contents on the Mac Mini with other Macs and PCs. Sharing is working fine. However, in the last couple days when logging into the Mac Mini the mounted volume (Mac Mini) no longer shows on the desktop, sidebar or when accessing the client hard drive. In order to access the Mac Mini after mounting via log in an alias to the Mac Mini needs to be created and access via the alias. Folders from the Mac Mini can be added to the side bar and accessed that way, but the main folder for the Mac Mini is only accessible through the alias. Preferences in the Finder are set to show mounted volumes and servers on the desktop.
Computers accessing the Mac Mini are running OS 10.6, 10.9, 10.8.

Check the settings in the General tab of the Finder's preferences.

  • How bad is it to have 4 network mounts for home folders?

I am the tech curriculum guy at a middle school and also manage the servers. I am not an expert at all. Learn enough to make it work efficiently. We got a new server (intel). I am in the process of migrating all the users, groups, home folders and data etc. Had some problems so I called Apple, in my discussion with the tech support there (3-4 hours solving problems) one of the techs questioned my setup. Here is what I used to do:
Server one has all the users in workgroup manager. The home folders for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders are on two separate drive bays on server one. Each grade level folder is a network mount. I then have the faculty home folders on a server two. There is also a shared folder called "Stuff" which mounts for all users and has clipart, movies etc. It is basically a read only mount. The faculty home folders are network mounts of their home folders.
I service between 400 and 500 students a day in the lab, it is quite busy, with anywhere from 60 to 90 users logged on at one time. My thinking last year was that if I could spread out the home folders on different drives, the students wouldn't all be hitting the same drive for saves, data etc. So that one drive wouldn't be spinning its brains out to keep everyone going. That is why I have the 4 network mounts for the home folders. One for each grade level (6,7,8) and the faculty.
My new server has three drives, two of them for home folders. The drives are 750 gb each. He (apple tech) suggested I create a folder in each drive, set it as the network mount and within that folder put two sets of home folders. So, then I would only have two network mounts, but retain my four sets of home folders that would be within the network mounts.
I guess my question is, which is better, to have the 4 network mounts with separate home folder locations on 2 different servers, or consolidate the home folders into 2 network mounts on one server.
He said that the more network mounts, the longer it takes to get computers started up.
Any expert advice here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, hope I explained this well enough.
Intel Imac Mac OS X (10.4.8) Lab- Education Intel iMacs - PPC eMacs

I don't think the logins take too long, we may wait 30 seconds or so for the students to login. We have had problems when 60 kids leave and 60 more come in, some login and after the username and password are entered, the login begins then locks. The Apple tech guy thought that could be aggravated by the 4 network mounts. I just sort of thought that with students and teachers accessing 4 different hard drives, that it wouldn't tax one drive as much. I agree that a longer login is a small price to pay for faster working speeds.

  • When I replaced my PC desktop with a Mac Mini and hooked up my HP printer to it, I discovered my other computers on the Wi-Fi network could no longer access the printer.  The manual says Maverick OS will not allow PC's to access the printer. Any thoughts?

When I replaced my PC desktop with a Mac Mini and hooked up my HP printer to it, I discovered that my other computers on the Wi-Fi network could no longer access the printer.  The manual says Maverick OS will not allow PC's to share the printer. Does anyone else have this problem?  My printer does not have on-board Wi-Fi but, otherwise, works fine.  I shouldn't have to buy a new one.  Is there a OS patch out there that would open the printer port for my PC computers?

I'm assuming that on the Mac, the System Preferences -> Sharing -> Printer Sharing -> [X] HP printer -> Everyone can print is selected?  That is to say, the Mac will allow anyone to print using the printer, and that you did not try to restrict who can print.
How is your network configured?  Bonjour as a protocol will NOT cross a router boundary.  If you have 2 or more subnets active with the PCs on one subnet and the Mac on another, that would block the PCs from seeing the Mac.
You could have multiple subnets if you have more than one router, such as an ISP provided broadband modem/router and another WiFi Router.  If the PCs are talking to one router and the Mac is talking to another, that could be a 2 subnet situation.  The additional routers must be put into bridge mode, which is done differently depending on the router.  But the basics are to diable DHCP and NAT services on the secondary router(s) having just one active router on the network.
Also, using Bonjour Browser on my Mac, it is showing me that the printer is being advertised as using Internet Printing Protocol, so if that is something selectable on Windows, maybe you can bypass Bonjour on Windows.

  • CDs, flash drives, network shares don't appear on the desktop when mounted.

has anybody experienced this with os x tiger? i have experienced it on a wide range of powerpc macs (have not used an intel mac yet unfortunately) running all versions of os x Tiger (10.4.0 through 10.4.6)
when myself or users insert a CD, a usb flash drive, a firewire hard drive, connect to a network share, or even save a file to the desktop, the object does not appear on the desktop. it actually doesn't appear anywhere in the finder, not even in the finder sidebar. however with files at least i know they are there because i can see them on the desktop.
i've submitted a bug report to apple and i know they are working on finding out what is causing this. since i can't find anybody else having the problem i haven't ruled out the possibility that it is some 3rd party piece of software running, but i'm still doing my own testing. clamXav, temperature monitor, and the retrospect client are suspect and i'll need more testing to eliminate those as contributing factors to this bizarre finder behavior.
has anybody else experienced this with os x tiger? did you get it corrected? thank you

whoops, i meant downloaded files don't always appear on the desktop but i can see them in the terminal. it's been a long day heheh.
all three checkboxes in finder preferences are on so they should show on the desktop, i haven't done anything in open firmware yet. so far the system is running smoothly with clamXav turned off, it's possible version 1.0.1 (what i was running) was incompatible with tiger. the retrospect clients are all at the latest version released by emc/dantz.
i'm thinking less and less that it is a bug, especially since i can't find any mention of others having that issue on these discussion boards.

  • Seagate hardrive no longer shows up on my desktop in Lion

I have a Seagate 500gb Freeagent hadrdive and recently upgraded to Lion, it no longer shows up on the desktop but does show up in disk utility. Tried a new WD hard drive and that one works fine. Anyone had similar problems or found work arounds?

See my tip on how to eject discs, as it also explains how to ensure removable drives are visible:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1015
If none of those make it visible, if it is connected via USB, see if booting in safe mode makes it visible.
That means holding the shift key.
Double check that Spotlight isn't trying to index it as well.  If the drive appears in Spotlight outside of the Privacy section of Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Spotlight, add it there, as that prevents Spotlight's index from slowing your access to the drive.
If you can't get it in Spotlight since it is invisible, it is possible the drive needs a new firmware to be Lion compatible.  Check with the manufacturer.

My external HD stopped showing up on my desktop, but shows up in my Disk Utility..
I have tried a disk verify and repair - sometimes that works and completes, sometimes it doesn't.
Either way, it wont eject or mount, and still doesn't show up on desktop.
There are no ticking noises coming from the hard drive, and it lights up still, and i have tried replacing the cords, and restarting/shutting down the computer, and have tried it on a mac desktop also - same problem.
    Any help would be great!!!

and have tried it on a mac desktop also - same problem.

Just got CS6, and spacebar/hand tool scroll no longer shows the desktop scrolling, it only shows the rulers moving and I have to use my imagination to know if my scroll/pan is taking me where I want to be. What's up with that? I really need to see where my scroll is taking me.

I ve already restarted it twice hoping that would be the issue but still won't work

  • USB Flash Drive no longer shows on Desktop, it does appear in disk utility. I recently upgraded to 10.8 from 10.6 on both iMac and Macbook and the drive does the same on both.

I updated my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and have had only minor issues with some software but I plugged in a USB flash drive and went to format it, it now appears only in disk utility and not on the desktop. I have tried restarting and reseting with the drive in and out, I tried it into my macbook and it does exactly the same there. I can't do anything in Disk Utility so can't access it in any way and it says errors if I try to eject it from DU. I'm not normally stumped but I can't figure this out at all. I'm hoping that someone here could give me an idea that I haven't thought of as it's a large Flash Drive and I really would like to keep using it.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

If it has the same (bad) behavior on two different systems then there is a very good chance that the  drive is toast.
BTW you'll get better response to your questions if the question actually reflects the problem you are having. In this case it would have been better to say you couldn't access the drive rather then that it doesn't show on the desktop.
