Network speed WAY down for internet - help??

I have 3 airport extreme's set up as a WDN. It all works great. Internet is fast through a cable modem attached to the main stations WAN port.
It seems though that when "certain" users are getting into heavy internet traffic, seemingly large continuous downloads, the REST of the network is slowing down. The internet slows down to a CRAWL, so much so that eventually safari brings up the "network troublshooting" thing.
What is perplexing about this is that when I try to remote desktop to another machine on the LAN, THIS TOO has slowed to a crawl! There are no other LAN transfers or interactions between machines going on, ONLY NAT/DHCP net access.
I KNOW it is other users, because when I disconnect the internet, the network speed instantly goes back to super fast, remote desktop works great etc, then it seems somebody is starting their download again (ha ha that I just disconnected) and suddenly it's crawling. This doesn't seem right, not with only 3 - 5 users on a 3 base station system, and a 1Mb/s internet cable connection.... does it? At least, if the internet is slowing down, other LAN traffic (non internet related) should not right?? This is the part that has got me confused.
Also is there any software out there that will let me see stats from the main station in regards to:
- DHCP LAN assignments
- and upload / download traffic of each of those LAN addresses and other information.
Thanks,
Miklos.
PS Just to be clear when the internet is extremely slow it is not one particular site - email doesn't work, and the same site, reloaded again and again does not load - the rest of the network is simultaneously slow - I disconnect the internet (log off via simple software app supplied by the ISP) and within 5 - 10 seconds, network speed is visibly up - things start loading properly, and the internet - the same site, starts to load very fast.
My dilemma is how can the internet usage slow the REST of the network, when it's a very fast system! Another point: I am NOT resetting the base stations, they are remaining online and nobody is getting bumped off, I'm only disconnecting the internet feed that's ALL, so it's not like they're getting kicked off and then network speed is resuming, they are still in effect logged on to the network, they just can't access the internet.

Did you run it in store? If so, the wireless instore is notoriously bogged down/slow with all the things connected to it.

The problem is with your router, your internet service provider or you have a marginal connection with your router.
Locate your iPad close to your wifi router and see if the problem persists.

  • Time-Capsule Network Speed slows down

The TC will work fine for about a week and then inexplicably begins to communicate at a very slow rate over the wireless network. If I cycle power on the TC,, it will resume normal performance for about a week, and then slow down again.
I've taken to monitoring the TC wireless speed using the airport utility. My airport devices will operate normally at about 54 Mbps and my PC clients at about 113 Mbps (I have Netgear N cards in the PCs that operate at about 108 Mbps). When the performance drops, my Mac devices will drop to around 5Mbps and the PCs will drop to 54 Mbps. Performance will continue to degrade until everything is running at 1 to 5 Mbps. I reboot the TC and everything returns to normal for another week.
Any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

Hi and welcome to the forums.
I'm not a wireless expert, but after having wireless networks at home for more than 5 years with Apple stuffI made some observations.
First, there might be issues with other networks in your neighbourhood. Many posts suggest that there should be at least 5 channels between wireless networks, e.g. 1 - 6 - 11. Set it with AirPort Utility.
Second, something called "noise" from other electronic equipment as microwave ovens and machinery.
Thirdly, having different types of equipment's and networks and speeds mixed together might not make the best network. We have the Time Machine set as working in the 5Ghz area with only the "n" protocol, while another device from the Internet Service Provider broadcasts in the slower bandwidth. In this way the slower wireless computers are running on their own net.
Fourthly, reception of the wireless network can be an issue. One older PC has been provided with an extra antenna, and that helped a lot with an nearly 100% increase in speed for that machine.

Easiest is to buy a WiFi router. If that doesn't work for you, try this.

  • Airport tmcpsle 2tb as network with cellular modem for internet

Just purchased an Airport Timcapsule 2TB to use with iMac.  I only have 4G internet access with an AT&T Unite hotspot.  The want to use the airport as my home network and use the AT&T Unite through the Airport through the USB connection.  Is this possible?

No, you cannot use USB for modems or routers or any other device except a printer and/or hard disk.
The TC needs ethernet if you want to use it for your home network.. it can become a dumb client.. using join a wireless network. but it will not provide anything but hard disk access to the network.. albeit slowly.

  • Very slow network speed

  • Is there a way to stay connected to a network but use wireless for my internet?

    Hello all.
    Quick question.
I am looking at using my phone's mobile hotspot for my iMac to connect to via wifi since it's on 4G, and this internet at this house is dire. Really, really slow. I've got a wireless router plugged into the cable modem, which has a Western Digital World Edition network hard drive connected to it.
Since this is the first time I had good speeds (via the phone hotspot) I started downloading OS X Lion. I then went downstairs and realised I'd like to listen to the music on my harddrive, so I plugged the ethernet cable in. As soon as I do that, despite airport being above ethernet on the network config pref pane, it automatically connects to the ethernet internet instead, and drops to really slow again.
As I see it, I can either benefit from the fast internet and have no access to the network, or be able to use the network but get poor internet speeds.
Without sounding stupid: can I use the wifi to get the fast internet, whilst being connected via ethernet to the network?
(i'd unplug the modem, but when I'm out of the house my girlfriend will need to be able to connect to the internet via the network...)
SECONDLY, is there a way to be connected to the ethernet network and toggle on/off internet access from it at the same time? E.g.... I would be connected to access our hard drive, etc., all the time, but if i didn't have access to my phone I could click something and enable internet access through the ethernet network, and turn it off when i had my phone to hand?
    Let me know!

can I use the wifi to get the fast internet, whilst being connected via ethernet to the network?
    Sorry, but no.
SECONDLY, is there a way to be connected to the ethernet network and toggle on/off internet access from it at the same time?
Yes. You should have a means to disable the modem. Doing so would disconnect you from the Internet but still leave your local network functional in order to access the WD HDD.

My Ipad2 won't turn off.  I have tried the reset method by holding both buttons down for at least 10 seconds, but this doesn't work.  I can't get onto the internet via wi-fi either (don't have a 3G card fitted).  All other functions seem to be working OK including charging. Not had this problem before, but I recently upgraded software to 5.1.1 so is there a bug in there somewhere?

"How do I find that IP address because I put in the 192.168.1.8.."
That's not the router's IP address. Most likely it will be 192.168.1.1
    System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP should show it.

I'm looking for some help connecting linksys IP Cameras to my home network to monitor my property when I'm travelling.  I used to do this with linksys WAPS, but since I've discarded all my old linksys networking and standardized on airport, I can't get these things working.  I know that I have to identify my camera through the DHCP table and set up port forwarding and there is the problem.
My network consists of 4  base stations set up in a roaming network - same network name and passwords.  I need to do it this way so I don't have to switch network when I move from one side of the house to the other, go to the cabana, or my shop in the barn.  The network works pretty well since I went to a roaming set up.  Good performance, yata, yata, yata.
However, the roaming network requires the AEBS's to be set up in bridge mode, rather than sharing an ip address.  When the AEBS is set to  bridge mode, you don't see a DCHP table or have the ability to identify your IP Cam through the AEBS - and hence, no port forwarding.
I am able to identify and set up my Linksys IP Cam by locating the ip address on my FIOS router, even though, it's plugged into an AEBS.  I set it up, see the video, remove the ethernet cable from the IP Cam, restart - and I can't get to it from an AEBS.  In researching this, it appears, I should be setting up the AEBS to "share an IP Address", going to the DHCP table and identifying the camera's IP address and setting up port forwarding.  However, you don't see any of the DHCP or port forwarding options in Airport Network Utility when configuring in bridge mode.
I'm hoping I'm missing something here and that the solution isn't to set it up at the FIOS router level, but I'm beginning to think that's my only hope.  What concerns me there is that I should be able to see the IP cam on the network without port forwarding since I'm not coming from outside, and I can't even do this unless it's connected hard wire.
I'd appreciate any insight into this that anyone might have.  I've hit the wall with what I know.
    Thanks.

In a roaming network, your "main" router is the device that would require port mapping/forwarding to be configured in order to access the IP camera from the Internet. This router is also the one that would be provide the private IP address for the camera which you will want to be a static one.
So as you described your network, the IP cameras should be getting an IP address or you assigned it a static one and this is the address that you would enter in the Private IP address (or equivalent depending on the router used) field when setting up port mapping.
If you are not able to access this camera from the local network, then this should be troubleshot first.

  • I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. any soln ?

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • I created a wireless network with my Time Capsule but would like to connect this network to a WiFi Hotspot for Internet Access

I have created a Wirelss Network at home with the Time Capsule and would like to connect this network to the Internet.
I can't use LAN Cable to connect to it anything becasuse I usually use the WiFi that runs through my building.
Can I connect the Time Capsule to the WiFi hotspot somehow so that all computers on my network have Internet access and if so, what do I need?
I need this done because the computers can only be connected to either the WiFi network or to my Time Capsule Network at any given time.
Or is there a way to be connected to both networks simultaneously?
I have two PC's and two Macs.
Thank you for any support and I apologise for my ignorance. I am not too good with networking.
I have tried the silliest of things like connecting a router to the TC only to then realise that the TC had an inbuilt router.
I tried connecting a USB WiFI adapter to the USB Port on the TC but it doesnt detect it that way apparently.
    Please help!

  • Want Wired for Internet, Wireless for file transfers on home network

I live in Dubai where internet in my house is connected straight from an ethernet port in the wall in numerous rooms. I have one wired connection hardwired from port to airport extreme which creates a wireless network for my laptops for internet.. apple tv et al. (home network 10.0.1.1 etc)
In the other room i have a mac mini which is directly hardwired to a second ethernet port. I use this machine for hard wired internet as its essentially downloading continuously for work.
    Looking at network setting states..
Wired connection states in network details : (To be used purely for hardwired internet)
    router address of (91.74.X.1)
    and ethernet port ip (91.74.x.21)
Wireless connection states in network details : (To be used purely for connection to home wireless network and streaming of files within internal networks)
    Router  (10.0.0.1)
    IP4V address is  (10.0.1.4)
    Subset mask is 255.255.255.0
I would like to force the mac mini to only use the wired ethernet connection for surfing/downloading, and also have an IP from the home network (10.0.1.2 etc) purely for file sharing/streaming with other computers on my home network.
    Is this possible ?

NAS is the right tool for this job.
It is expensive but the market leaders.. synology and QNAP have really been doing it for long time and the ability to do file store/sharing and most importantly backup in these is excellent. Pick the best you can afford.. and buy disks that are in the recommended list. ie the cheapest are not always the best.. indeed they seldom are.
Plan very carefully for rotation of USB drives (easy and cheap now with 4TB single drives). Rotate backups with offsite location on weekly basis.
I would buy a 4 disk case.. you can use 4x3TB which are the best value at the moment.. that gives you 9TB of storage.. plus redundancy for a dead drive.
Alternatives are using a Mac Mini as a server.. with a large stack of disks on it.. generally should be thinking thunderbolt if you want speed. Hideously expensive though for now.
You can buy an Extreme or TC.. either would work well. TC allows you easy TM backups without using your NAS..
Edit very large files on the computer. ie copy to computer.. edit.. copy back to the NAS.
Editing very large files over wireless.. not good. Multiply that by mutliple computers.. not even fair.
Copy a large project to the computer.. work on it.. copy back to the NAS.. in the meantime Time Machine should be able to take care of incremental backups.
There are heaps and heaps of solutions.. as long as it is logical and easy to you.. and covers what you need.
Don't skimp.. spending a $1000 for a NAS with disks.. plus extra for the backup disks.. that represents how many day's work for you plus anyone you have helping.. $$$$ ????
A mini as a server is a good alternative.. You don't need to run server OS.. but share files to the network. Very hard to build the capacity of the NAS though.
And a Mac Pro is now a joke without internal slots and cages for drives. (nice machine but wrong for this).
And Apple have nothing in between.. a short tower case.. been missing for a long long time.

I have a WRT54G (Version. 6) Wireless-G Broadband Router and I have had it for about a year now. Then one day it just became VERY slow. My internet is supposed to be around an average of 4000kb and now its all the sudden 500kb. So I tried many things I tried to: 1) Hooked my computer straight up to my modem and it was running at 4000kb again. 2) Update my Firmware to the newest version but still didnt work. 3) Reset my router to factory settings then didnt work. I have tried more things but I don't remember right now so if anyone there has an idea or they have the same problem please reply I need help.

  • Internet speed slows down when connected via airport express

Internet speed slows down when connecting via airport express. When connecting directly via the timecapsulethe internet speed is ok, when connecting via the airport express the speed slows down. What can I do to change that? Any suggestions?

Turn off the AirPort Express completely as a test, and move your computer very close to the location of the Express.
As I said before, the Express can only extend the bandwidth (speed) that it receives from the Time Capsule, so the speed that you see there with the Express powered off will be the fastest speed of which the Express is capable.
The Express will make the signal go further when it extends....but it will not make the signal go faster.
A good location for a device that extends wirelessly is a point that is about half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you locate the AirPort Express too far from the Time Capsule or there are more than a couple of walls in the signal path, the signal will be very slow by the time that it reaches the Express....and the Express simply extends a signal that has already slowed down significantly.
If you already have the Express located about half the distance between the Time Capsule and general area that needs more wireless coverage, how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions are there in the signal path between the Time Capsule, the AirPort Express and the area that needs more coverage?
Often, due to obstructions, it is just not possible to achieve good performance when you try to extend a network wirelessly. The solution is connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
There is virtually no signal loss with this type of connection, so the Express can be located exactly where it is needed and it will produce a much faster wireless signal in this type of setup.
