Networking vista and tiger

I have a windows vista machine on the netowrk and i cant seem to network vista nad mac , the mac doesnt show up on the vista netowrking map and it doesnt let me share files between the two etc, print etc. I read i need the Link Layer Topology Discovery becuz vista does that, but i dont know how to netowrk vista and mac to make it work.

Charley,
I have been having similar problem between my Mac and Vista. Vista was able to see Mac on the Ethernet but attempts to connect alway result in "incorrect user name or password" when they were actually correct.
I tried to search through this gigantic discussion but could not find how it was solved. Would you please let me know how you made it work?
Thank you very much.

  • Solution To Network problems with Leopard systems and tiger and vista

After lots of research and looking into sharing data with leopard systems and other os, i finally found a Solution. Before i state what you have to do to fix it here is what the problem is.
Mac Os x( Leopard) systems trying to find computers or share data to other systems on the same lan can't find each other or simply if are found cant share data with each other.
    Reason for the problem.
    - By default tiger , windows and some linux distro's automatically join WORKGROUP under workgroup in WINS. with leopard this is changed to join local under workgroup. This effectively causes the systems to fail to communicate with each other.
    - By default shared folders on leopard has smb not checked by default.
    Solutions
-in order to see computers on the same network or workgroup. find out the workgroup with which all the local machines are connected to, then on your leopard system goto Apple->System Preferences->network ->advance and head over to WINS tab from here either select your workgroup or type in your workgroup. hit ok then apply in the network window. ( restart your mac at this point int time and try browsing the computers in your network)
    - to make sure you can share folders with windwos machines goto apple->system preference ->Sharing. Make sure file sharing is selected then choose the folder you want to share or add a folder you want to share. next click on options and enable Share files and folders using SMB enter your password if it asks and then hit done.
hopefully this helps people with problems on their mac's. other wise you have three options if this is too much trouble install vmware fusion/parallels on your machine and install windows / install windows using bootcamp / and last get a windows machine ( although this choice is highly unlikely it's still a choice). Please note this is not a windows vs mac subject is just that apple has changed the network stack protocols and architecture so stuff is being done differently , you just got to think different to get stuff to work. but after it's all said and done all your system should work in harmony now.

Thank you all for replying. I upgraded to Tiger from Panther the first week and it worked AWESOME! I do have to say that I truly and beginning to feel like I'm having issues I would experience on a windows machine. I know that Apple will fix but it is frustrating that I'm having the issues that I'm having.
I just need to finish up the project I'm working on and then I'm going back. I'm currently without any admin rights on my computer but I'm working away. I actually don't know what to expect next so I'm just backing up my data from time to time and working hard to get this done and get back to Tiger (that will be a long process so don't want to get started).
Again thank you all! Also I want to call Apple about this but don't want to wait on hold for the tech. AND they are only open during business hours. Guess what, I work during business hours. What's up with that? Adobe is available all the time.

  • Network between Vista and Mac

i'm trying to create a network between a Vista desktop and my Macbook Pro for files and printer sharing.
after lots work with setting on Vista, I now can enter in MacbookPro folders from Vista. the problem is by Mac side: i can't find the printer connect on Vista (and shared), and the icon of PC don't appear on Finder, so i can't enter on Vista's folders. the problem with file sharing is strange, cause only one time, today, icon of PC was appeared on Finder (come back to Stop of Mac)..... i've traied with the same method another times, without success...
I don't now what to do. I hope someone help me

I have limited knowledge but will try to help you as I have battled through this myself recently...You will lose nothing if you give it a try!
In System Preferences open the Sharing folder. Check the boxes to enable 'File' & 'Printer' Sharing. In the same open window select 'Options'.. Here I have Share files and folders using AFB and (importantly) also Share files and folders using SMB. - 'on' should be checked and 'Account' should i believe be the name assigned to your Macbook. - select 'Done' and then also close the 'sharing' window in sys preferences to take you back to the desktop.
In 'Finder' select the 'Go' option in the toolbar. Select connect to server from the drop down menu. You now need to enter the server address which will be the name of your Vista Pc - enter as follows: smb://(your vista name).. you may have to also enter the password for the Vista machine if it is configured in this way. ( It has been a while since I completed this so a little rusty here!)
If you have entered the correct information when you hit 'Connect', your Macbook should find your Vista desktop that has previously not been appearing in your Macbook 'Sharing' section - this was the issue that I was originally experiencing. You should now see the Vista machine in the Sharing section of your Macbook.
If this has been successful to here... This will enable access to try to solve the printer sharing problem? I think this one is beyond me as there are so many different configurations/installation options dependent upon the type of printer and network configurations.
It is possible to configure your Macbook to automatically find your Vista machine at startup if it is not found as a matter of course, which I perceive to be the case here... Try this to automate connection at startup..
Go to Sys Preferences and sect 'Accounts' you may have to enter your password to initiate changes. Making the assumption that you are connected now to your Vista machine and it is showing in the 'Shared' section of 'Finder'- select the 'Login Items' option and then select the '+' under where it states 'To hide an application when you log in etc etc.
From the window that opens you will now select your Vista machine from the left hand folders menu. when done click 'Add' and close windows to return to your desktop. Re-start the Macbook to check whether the Vista machine will now load to the Mac automatically at startup.
I hope this works for you as it has for me - The non discovery of the vista machine by the Mac was driving me round the bend

  • Networking Printers   Windows Vista and Mac

I have my Mac connected to my home network(wired) and a HP 5550 printer connected to my Mac. I would like to print from my Vista PC to the HP via the network, but it keeps stating that I don't have sufficent permission when using Bonjour for windows. HELP.

Hello SteveKid. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Have PC with Windows Vista and Belkin N1 Router. Want to replace Belkin with Airport Extreme to use with both PC and MacBook Pro.
Unless you have additional networking requirements or are having issues with your Belkin router, there is no reason to have to replace it with an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) just to support both Macs and PCs. Your MacBook Pro shouldn't have any difficulties connecting to routers provided by manufacturers other than Apple.
Do I need to download special software for Windows or is this included on disk that comes with the Airport?
Software (AirPort Utility) to administer the AEBSn from either a Mac or a PC is included with the installation disc that comes with the base station. The necessary software is already installed on the Mac, but if you intend to administer the AEBSn from the PC, you would need to install it on the PC from the disc or download it directly from Apple's Support site. The other software that comes on the disc is Bonjour for Windows. This allows for easier access to a printer attached to the AEBSn from PCs, but is not mandatory in order to print.
Printer is HP Photosmart C6380 all-in-one ane purports to work wirelessly...so far wired to PC and unable to link to PC wirelessly. That's why Airport Extreme with USB for printer makes sense to me.
Unfortunately, there is one caveat. The USB port on the AEBSn does not fully support the non-printing features (fax, copy, scan) of all-in-one printers ... just the print function. If these features are important to you, then you may want to look for wireless print server provided by another manufacturer that does support these additional features. I believe Linksys/Cisco still provide these.

  • Airport Express, Vista and FON Wireless network

Hi. I have a strange behavior on my wireless network. I configured my Airport Express as part of my wireless network managed by the Fonera (FON Network router). The Airport Express is always on as the wireless network. Yesterday all was working fine and I was able to play music and surf the net without a glitch. I started iTunes, the software found and connected the remote speakers and music was playing while I continued to surf. Today I restarted Vista and connected wirelessy to the Internet. As soon as I started iTunes I found that my Airport Express was no more available (it was still on since yesterday). I started the AirPort Utility, found the Airport Express and went again through the process of let it participate to my network, reset the WPA and add (again) the password. The Airport restarted but it was unable to find any wireless network. The reason is that in the process the Fonera has been reset to different settings!! I put again the right parameters in the Fonera and is back working. How come that adding the Airport Express to my network, the wireless network itself is reset? In my opinion this should not happen. Any ideas? Thank you very much, Massimo

    Hi Donny
I had the same problem with my airport. In the end I got it printing by sending it to the Ip adress of the base station(10.0.1.?/192.168.2.?). I sent it through a custom made port which went to that Ip adress as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • I use i-tunes on Windows network using Windows 7, Vista, and XP. I now get an error on the XP machine the library was created on a newer version of I tunes, yet apple update on that machine say all up to date.

I use i-tunes on a Windows Network with pc's using Windows 7, Vista, and XP. After recent Apple updates the XP machine says i-tunes library created on a newer version of i-tunesand does not load. The Apple uppdater on the XP machine returns all software up to date. How do I get the XP machne to recognise the library?

For general library squiffiness following an upgrade or crash the easiest thing is to restore your last backup, but I guess if it were that simple you wouldn't be here.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these andcopy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
PS There is also a new iTunes build to download today, so might be worth getting that. A new iTunes should always load an older library file.

  • Macbook wireless network question with vista and xp PLEASE HELP

Ok I just bought a macbook computer and introduced it to a windows family using vista and xp computers. I was able to set up wireless networking and surf the internet with all computers. However I cannot see the windows computers from the mac but can see the mac on the windows computers. I have a linksys wrt54g router. I tried everything and Im unable to see other computers or the printer thats attached to the desktop pc using vista. I went ahead and purchased the extreme airport router and after being on the phone with apple care for 3 hours and reformatting the operating system on the mac I was finally able to see the other pc's and installed bonjour for windows on all windows based pc's and was able to print from the mac without a glitch but the windows based pc's were horribly very very slow printing using bonjour. Needless to say I didnt want to spend all the extra money on a apple router for all this to work and after doing so the printing from windows machines just plain *****. So I returned the airport extreme and Im back to the linksys. When the linksys wrt54g is hooked up I cannot see the printer or other windows machines. Any ideas please to keep my current setup so I dont have to go out and by more apple products for everything to play nice. Thanks

What is the exact model number of your Linksys router for this Linksys forum??

  • Belkin Wireless Notebook Network Card F5D7010 and Tiger

    Hi
I'm currently running OSX 3.9 Panther on my G3 500mhz Powerbook and I have a Belkin Wireless Card F5D7010 vers.1314uk which has a Broadcom chipset and works perfectly with Airport. (vers. 1.x 2.x and 4.x are Broadcom, vers. 3.x are Prism)
I'm thinking of upgrading to Tiger but I'm worried that the change of operating system will render my wireless card inoperable or cause problems. Has anybody on these forums had any experience with this Belkin card version and Tiger and can they confirm that it will work after the upgrade?
    Any advice would be appreciated

  • Networking iMac and PC

I have a wireless network with intel iMac running Leopard and Windows PC running Vista. I have sharing enabled on both iMac and Windows PC.
On the Windows PC iMac shared drives are visible and its possible to copy/update files etc.
The issue is that I cannot see any Windows PC shared drives on my iMac. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
    Requirements
    1. A decent router
    2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
    3. Windows XP or Vista
    4. Number of network devices <10
    5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
    6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
    <u>General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
    Windows
    1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
    2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
    3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
    MAC
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
    3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
    Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
    1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
    3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
    4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
    5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
    6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
    Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
    3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
    Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
    FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
    Good Luck

  • Windows Vista and Airport Express

I can connect my Airport Express to my wireless router via an ethernet cable and get up the configuration page - easy!
    Now for the difficult bit!
I cannot get Airport Admin Utility to recognise the Airport Express (base station in Apple Speak!) when I disconnect from the router.
Airport Express really sounds a great way to connect ITUNES to remote speakers etc but it is necessary to get it working with Windows Vista and get the wireless function working.Anybody sucessfully done it? Please only respond if you have managed to do this personally!

William - I am in a similar place.... I have an airport express running as an extension to my home wireless network. I have a TC that I use as my router. My macs can connect to my network (of course) but the windows vista laptop (sony vaio) does not...... HELP! Have you been able to get any answers??

  • Vista and BEFW11S4 issues

Hi Everyone. I have a Wireless B Router model BEFW11S4 v 4.0. We recently bought a new computer that has Windows Vista. Recently we started having some problems with the internet. Our Windows Firewall is OFF as we have Norton 360 v 2.0. Our problem is that certain websites will not load. It appears that there is a timeout issue. One is www.comics.com. We have not had a problem with this site in the past, even on this computer with this setup. We have not installed or uninstalled any softwares or hadware and have made no changes whatsoever. About a week ago the site was accessing just fine. The error we get when attempting to view certian sites is:
    Address Not Found
    can't find the server
The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.
        * Did you make a mistake when typing the domain?
        * Are you certain this domain address exists?  Its registration may have expired.
        * Are you unable to browse other sites?  Check your network connection and DNS server settings.
        * Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?  Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
When using Vista's help section we learned that some older routers are "not fully compatible" with Vista and we're trying to determine if this is the case with ours. We found a firmware download from Linksys that was v 1.52.02. It is a bin file but did not indicate where to save the file to. Is this the "fix" to the Vista compatibility issue? Where do we save this file then? We did perform the Vista Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool and the test results indicate that the following were not supported: TCP High Performance Tool and UPnP Support Test.
When following the insturctions from Linksys to ping linksys.com all requests timed out. I did perform the ipconfig/all command but don't know if those results are necessary to show here. I don't want to overload on TMI (too much information).   Can someone please help us? This "limited" internet ability is really become troublesome and we just want to make sure we can resolve this issue. Any help is appreciated. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

To make matters worse I just spent an hour in a live chat with someone who gave me misinformation! This person told me to reset the router by pressing and holding the reset button for 30 seconds and that this would reset the password back to "admin" and allow me to make these changes. He also said that I needed to completely shut down and unplug everything from the back of the router, with the exception of the power cord, and perform the reset, then plug everything but the cable modem back in, boot the computer and then go to the setup page and go through the entire process of configuring the router, setting up the network and then going through the power cycle. Well, this would be a great option if resetting the router actually reset my password, it didn't so I couldn't get in to perform the rest of the instructions. He told me that if I ran into problems I should call 1-800-326-7114 for immediate free assistance by another technician who could walk me through everything. Upon calling that number I'm told that because my router isn't covered any longer by warranty that I'd have to pay $29.99 just for the one technical call to answer my question as to how to reset the password. This is absurd! My router is working fine now since I got the updated firmware. I don't need any setup support or troubleshooting. I just need to reset my password for the setup page so that I can make some changes and have access to this in the future. I'm not going to pay $30 for something that isn't related to a repair issue! I can't believe I spent all this time dealing with a live chat person who kept giving me misinformation repeatedly (he gave me the wrong steps for procedures repeatedly) and was then directed to free tech support by phone and suddenly expected to pay $30 just for a generic question. Is this really the typical type of "service" to expect from Linksys?   Can't anyone give me the proper answer to reset my password or an alternate method if resetting the router didn't work? I've reset the router about 5 times now and it's not resetting the password. I can log in only using Firefox (not IE) but then I can't make any changes. If being misinformed and lied to is really how Linksys treats their customers I think I'll go elsewhere for an upgrade. Is this really how I should expect to be treated?

  • Windows Vista and Windows 7 random WSAECONNRESET

  • I have a C6380, The printer works with my laptop running Vista and MacBook but not Windows 7. Why??

I have had my C6380 for quite a while, now.  I have a personal laptop running Vista and have no problems.  I have a MacBook for work that I use with the printer with no problems.  I also have a desktop that was working well for a long time with this printer and for the last number of months (I haven't counted), I have been having a lot of problems.
Either the computer cannot find the driver or the computer delivers a message that the printer is off line (even though it works with the other computers).  I use the C6380 via a home wireless network.
Reinstalling the HP Software helps for a short time, but the problem soon recurs.
I cannot seem to find anything in any of the Trouble shooting guides on HP or MS websites.  HELP!

If it works on one Firefox 3.6.10 installation, it should work on the other - assuming both PC's have exactly the same version of Norton installed, including that Firefox Toolbar extension. Another possibility is that Norton uses a different version of their software on WinXP than they use on Vista.
Tools > Addons > Extensions - does the Norton Toolbar show as being incompatible?
You could try forcing a Norton program update to see if their Firefox extension gets updated.

  • Unreliable wireless communication between laptop (Vista) and Time Capsule

I am using a Time capsule for my wire less router at home. I have a new laptop running vista and the connection fails frequently. It is restored using repair. This does not happen with this laptop in other wireless locations. I also do not have this problem with my older laptop running xp (at least not as often). Any suggestions?
I am thinking of buying a 802.11n card for the laptop. any chances this will help?

Please open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just under the row of icons
What is the setting that you have for "Wireless Mode" on this device?
It should be "Extend a wireless network" and the other settings should match those on the AirPort Extreme.
Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Extreme, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Make sure that you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"

It has the error range of 3000's which states
Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.
