Never looked at Mac until now

Hello,
I know enough about computers (PC's) to be dangerous. 2 years ago I bought a Gateway notebook and have had unbelievable issues with it. For the last year, it has begun to just shut off on it's own while being used. When it does this, you can't re-boot for days or even weeks at a time. It finally bit the dust and we haven't been able to get online for weeks. I suspect there might be a problem with the motherboard.
Anyway...my wife and I started looking at HP and Dell. We really don't know what to get but we know that whatever it is will be better than the lemon we had. We were prepared to get an HP with an Intel processor, 100 GB hard drive, etc. What seemed to be a nice system for right at 900. I have 3 friends that are Mac users and I asked their opinions. All said that I should consider a Macbook. So we looked online. The higher end Mac in white could probably be had for not much more than we are budgeting (with our teacher discount). The price seems pretty comaparable with what we've been considering. All 3 friends swear that it was the best move they made. When we started having trouble with our PC, we had talked about it but I think we're just a bit nervous.
We used our PC for surfing the net, I Tunes, and photos. Our school district is PC based. I am working on a Masters online right now so I need to get something soon. One of my biggest concerns is if I will be able to create a document in word processing or Powerpoint and be able to email it to my PC at school? I do a lot of lesson plans at home and need to be able to send them to my classroom PC. Also...I do not want to get a Mac if it's going to make working on my online Masters a pain. Are there any real pitfalls I should know about? I suspect that people like me are sketchy about converting b/c of lack of education. Can you offer any advice please? Thanks.

My husband was dead set against getting a mac,as he loved PC's...but I love Macs...so afer many years with a sluggish Win98se, and many crashes, etc, we got a Macbook. One of the biggest reasons was if we really needed to, we could load WinXP....but so far haven't needed it.
I use Open Office Aqua and it works well. I can exchange documents and excell files with my PC friends. No problems yet. You can also get MS Office at your teachers rate to be sure. Unless you have complicated formatting with your documents , Powerpoints, etc, you shouldn't have too many problems. Again, you can run WinXP with your Win MS Office to be sure.
I haven't run XP, but from what I understand, all programs you access from it run just like a PC.
Your main concern is doing your online Masters....go to an apple store and check online your learning website to make sure you can access it with Mac Safari or Mozilla. Again, worst case scenario is you load Windows and access it that way.
You will have no problems with you itunes, photos, etc and surfing the net....I've only run into 1 website that I needed Explorer for (it is an online group reservations system for conferences...I need explorer to access user level reports).
Remember though that anything you do via the XP OS, will have the same problems as on a PC (viruses, malware, etc)...take the same precautions as you would on PC...I am not sure if it will affect the Mac side of the hard-drive...do a search on Bootcamp or Parralles to make sure.
Go for it, you won't regret it.

No longer have service at home....I've lived here for 3 years and never had a problem until now.

I have been having issues for the last couple of months now with getting service on my cell phone at my house. Meaning, my phone literally says, "NO SERVICE" where I've always had service bars. I can't even send or receive a text message at home. Never, have I experienced these issues before. I've lived in this house for 3 years and have always been able to talk on my cell phone and send and receive text messages, until now. At first I chalked the issues up to the storms we had been having. Assuming a Verizon tower had possibly been hit. After several more weeks passed with the issue being unresolved, I went into my Verizon store and explained the issues I have been having. The rep I was working with suggested that I back up my phone and do a system restart on my iphone to see if that would fix the problem. I followed his instructions and the issue was still unresolved. I then went back into my Verizon store and explained the issue to the same representative I worked with the first time. He said it sounded like it was more of a software issue than a Verizon issue. Since my contract was up and I was good to get a new phone I decided to upgrade to the iPhone 5c (therefore I lost my unlimited data which irks me). When I got home I was shocked to see that I was STILL having the same issues. No Service. Can't text. Can't call. At this point I'm ready to lose my mind. Why am I paying for a service that I am not getting? We left on our family vacation this same day, so when we FINALLY reached a point down the road where I could receive service, I called my Verizon store to express my UNDERSTANDABLE frustrations. They were extremely helpful and have been since day 1. I ended up talking to a different representative than the one who had been helping me. She asked me to explain my situation and the issues I have been having since she hadn't been helping me she wasn't aware of what was going on. Once I explained my situation to her, she asked me where I lived at. Once I told her where I lived she IMMEDIATELY knew what my issue was. She told me that Verizon QUIT paying to use the Nex-tec tower that is by my house. She told me I'm not the first person that lives in my area to come in to their store with these SAME ISSUES. She told me that I needed to contact Verizon and complain and that hopefully if all of us kept complaining, Verizon would resolve the issue. I am WRITING you a complaint because I cannot CALL you off of my cell phone unless I drive SEVERAL miles down the road to a point where I can get service. I live on a busy highway that intersects with another busy highway a few miles down the road in North Central Kansas. I also live 3 miles from a STATE PARK with a VERY BUSY LAKE that doesn't have ANY SERVICE. I have talked to several friends, family members, and neighbors in my area and surrounding towns that are having the same issue as me and were told the same thing. Lovewell State Park is very popular and MANY people spend their weekends there. We have always had service there, until now, as well. Verizon customers that attend Lovewell State Park and that live in the surrounding towns cannot even call 911 off of their cell phone if their is an accident because we have NO SERVICE ANYMORE. I've been with Verizon since they ought out Altell. I have never had any issues with Verizon until now. Please take care of your customers. I trust that you care that you took service AWAY from customers who having been paying you for your service for several years and that you will resolve the issue quickly. We want our service BACK. We want to get service that we PAY FOR. If you cannot resolve the issues that I (and so many others) are having, I will be forced to switch to a new provider. As of right now, Verizon is doing me no service. Please change that. We live in an area where there are many accidents due to the types of jobs and winter weather we have in this area. It is necessary that we are able to make phone calls. I know that I am not the first nor will I be the last in our area to complain about this issue. Please fix these issues. Again, this information came straight from our Verizon store. They are just as upset as we are about the situation. The store doesn't want to lose us as customers and we would feel bad doing that to them when they have been such great people to work with. If the issues are not resolved we will be left with no other choice.

In what zip code do you experience this problem? You mentioned service problems at your home. Do you get a signal when you're outside at this location? I'm trying to send photos with iPhoto. I have to sign into "messages" but can't find that on my Mac. I never had a problem until now.

In 27 years I've never hated my Mac like now

I knew I shouldn't have upgraded to Mavericks. Knew it. Decided it was 'right' since I'm using Adobe Cloud products and wanted to be sure I was in sync. Never been so unhappy with an OS upgrade (and I lived through the change from OS6 to OS7).
Start-up:
- Overall start up is a bit faster, but every application now takes twice as long to launch (longer if Mail is already launched (see below)
Mail:
- When launching Mail, it (sometimes) takes between 5 and 10 minutes to see all of my mail files and other times only 15 seconds
- When Mail is launched my Adobe products are doing strange things for no apparent reasons
- When Mail is launched my computer will run ferociously thinking the entire time, slowing everything else down (Quit mail and the problem goes away - IF it doesn't hang up and refuse to quit.)
- Don't launch Mail after a restart and I'm fine. Launch it because I need to and predictably happens again
KeyChain:
- Lost many of my keychain passwords to 'gobbledgook' and have to re-log in from scratch to my server drives, WiFi devices, Airport
Printing:
- Have an HP CP5525 Color Laser Printer - never any problems. Now approx 1 of 6 print jobs disappears into nowhere. Re-print and it works fine.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

Serious problems of late syncing... never had any issues until now

Updated all the latest software a few days ago. I am away from home on business, in a hotel room, and the way I keep my phone charged is plugged into my MBP overnight. It always works at home. Yes the MBP is plugged in. I wake up to find my iPhone at 20% power.
I unplug and plug it back it, it starts the sync, then my iPhone goes away (on the left side of iTunes) and the phone says "Sync in progress" but there is not syncing going on in iTunes, and the iPhone is no longer down the left hand side. I cancel sync on the iPhone, try again, same thing.
So I go to restore. It locks up the restore, while the iPhone says "RESTORING", iTunes stops and kicks the phone out of iTunes like during the sync.
I went through the steps to force the restore (holding home while plugging it in) and it wiped it fine, then I had a very difficult time getting it to backup the iPhone with an older backup. It overwrote my latest backup with a backup of no data, but I had one from September that was OK. Each time it tried to backup, same thing would happen, and phone would say "RESTORING" but iTunes would kick it out.
Tried restarting the computer, creating a new profile on the MBP, etc. What finally did it was just continually trying to force the backup, it finally kept the phone syncing and restored it properly.
Now when I got to plug 'er in to the MBP, it sees the phone, starts the sync, and then again kicks the phone out of iTunes and leaves "SYNC IN PROGRESS" on the iPhone. And of course it stops the charge process.
So *** did Apple do to iOS 4.2.1 or the new iTunes 10.1 (54) that totally botched the syncing process up?
For information, I have had this phone since January and have never had a single problem with it other then it locking up once a month after I got it and never since. It is an awesome phone, but this sync issue is beyond frustrating. The phone was not dropped, damaged or anything, and it has a hard case on it. Further, I had two different USB iPhone connectors that all do the same thing, in both USB ports on my MBP.
Thanks for any insight, hopefully Apple reads this. I am relatively computer savvy so I do not think this is OE.

Not sure. The syncing process has not been totally botched up or botched up in any way with my MBP and iPhone running the current iTunes version and iOS 4.2.1.
If the same occurs with a new computer login account and there is no change after downloading and re-installing the current iTunes version over the existing, there may be a problem with your iPhone.

Just updated to 10.9.2 and now my computer restarts whenever I open up World of Warcraft. Never had an issue until now.

Has anyone had similar issues?

HI,
I just want to pop in and say I have the exact same problem.
I am using a late 2013 MBPr 13".
Before I updated to 10.9.2 the game run flawlessly, after that I have gone through a lot of trouble shooting with blizzard and ended up removing and reinstalling the game. Did not help at all.
The issue I am facing is that when I launch wow through the battle.net application, the game starts but the screen turns black but I hear the game sound in the background, when trying to change to window mode with CMD-M I get a kernel panic. Same if I try to CMD-TAB out from it I get a kernel panic.
This is highly frustrating.

Me and my sister share the same itunes account, we have different music and it never seemed to combined until now, I find my itunes having some of her music. Is there a way to stop it?

Edit > Preferences > Store > Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases

Updated iPad to ios7, now it says if I open spreadsheet in Numbers I won't be able to sync to Mac until upgrade to Mavericks

Updated iPad mini to iOS 7.
I had purchased Pages & Keynote & then later purchased Numbers also on the iPad so I could keep a file synced w my Mac, now that I'm doing more & more on the iPad mini so not using the Mac all the time.
I was dismayed to get a message when I tried to open a contact file that I use to keep track of biz prospects that said if I opened it, I would Jo longer be able to keep it synced w the version on the Mac until I updated to Maverick. This caught me totally by suprise. If I had had even a hint that ths would happen, I would have held off updating to iOS 7 on the iPad mini. (Which I'm typing on now)
Is there any way around this? I do use Time Machine to keep my Mac backed up regularly.
Have the bugs been worked out of Mavericks?
I've read that the iWork's apps & maybe some others have been dumbed down to make the sync work so some features are lost.
Does most apps work fine w Mavericks? I guess I should check to make sure that Parallels 8 works w it. Don't use it much any more, but do have Windows 7 as a virtual machine. I'd like to retain that w out having to pay to upgrade as I just upgraded not that long ago.
Also do the apps work ok & sync well if using iOS 7 on iPad & Mavericks on MacBookPro (mid 2012 model--although purchased May 2013).
Back in May, I also moved to Portland, OR not realizing there is only 1 Apple store inconveniently located downtown. It also doesn't seem to have as full offering of classes as the store in Tigard which are further away. Before moving, I had 2 Apple stores w in. 10-15 min drive. & I used zone to One for 3 years. I purchased it again just before my move after spilling water on my old MacBookPro & ending up buying a new one. But haven't even activated it yet. But thinking of looking into ging to an apple store to get help.

OK, I decided to upgrade to Mavericks. 1st I checked to see if Parallels 8 woudl work w it. It said yes, but upgrade parallels 8 1st so I did that (& then realized I should update virus def & run Windows updates also. Don't use it very much 180 days ago it said).
Then saw some reports of mail not working so well so decided to clean out a lot of un-needed emails on my Mac. Also ran updates to Mountain Lion.
Then closed everything & shut down. Left it off for a few min to clear out any left over electronic garbage & rebooted. Opened App store & clicked the Mavericks free download. Almost immediated it gave me error message & suggested doing it from the Purchased section.
Ok, I tried downloading it there. 2-3 times got same almost immediate error message.
Then, I think it was after disconnecting external HD & printer I tried again & it was looking good w download. It was fluctuating between 40-45 min time remaining & showing almost 500 mb downloaded when I got the error message again.
btw, I also got an error message when running Windows update. There was an unknown error code when I tried updating Service Pack 1 (which it showed I needed, although I'm thinking that is kind of strange since I've had Windows 7 on a MacBookPro since shortly after I bought the original MacBookPro in April 2010. (Spilled water on it last May & Apple store said it would need expensive repair so bought this replacement that they used my Time Machine backups to install everything on. This was right as I was getting ready to move & I haven't yet found the old one to see if maybe it would work. It should be in one of my boxes).
So, if it is having this much trouble just getting it installed I'm kind of afraid to go ahead. Wondering why some report it works fine & a lot of others saying no.
I very frustrated since I just want to be able to have the functionality I had to be able to sync Numbers between my iPad & my Mac.

I tried to get da driver for it, but could not find any.

Try the other DVI port on the graphics card. On early Mac Pros, only one port is the dual-link DVI needed for full resolution on the 30" display. Make sure the display's USB cable is plugged into the computer.

It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

I've never used a Mac before, recently i purchased a MBP13" which came loaded with LION OS by default. I upgraded the OS to OS10.7.2 when prompted. Now after the upgrade, my MBP feels very slow - specially when typing emails !! What is the solution ??

After an update or installation, your MBP may take some time to index its files. Give it some time - but if you don't see any improvement, post here - you'll get an answer!

What "child lock" are you talking about?
Do you mean you set up a Managed account (Parental Controls), or some other software?
For Parental Controls, select the account in Users & Groups and uncheck the "Enable parental controls" checkbox.
