New iMac 20 500Gb won´t start

I got my new iMac iSight 20" today. With the wireless keyboard and mouse and the 500Gb hd option. Great - if it would start.
First time I switched it on, I heard the Apple-sound, then the screen turned gray and showed the apple-logo. Forever. At leasts for several minutes. Then I switched it off, disconnected the power-cord and tried again. Now the screen won´t even turn gray, but after a while the fans runs like crazy.
Defective disc? or what?

I tried pushing the cd in, but it wasn´t drawn in.
This may sound obvious, but I just wanted to verify that you tried inserting the CD with the computer on. The drive should accept the disk as long as it has power.
If it is not accepting the CD with the power on, then you definitely have something interesting going on inside the computer.
I have had several macs since the 80s but this is my worst experience so far
For some reason the iMac G5's seem to be having more than their share of trouble. They don't seem to have the success rate that I am familiar with on Apple's other computers.
I've had two iMac G5's (purchased from Apple) and have had both of them serviced many times.
My recent one is only a couple weeks old, and was put in for service the same day it arrived.
But, with AppleCare I am sure I'll have all the bugs worked out by the time my 3-year warranty expires. If not, they can keep taping it together to get me through the next 3 years.
I am not sure why Apple's quality has seemed to slip. I have never had any trouble with any other Apple computer other than the two iMac G5 computers I have had. Even my first generation Mini is working fine with no service ever having been needed.
Sad when compared to the $400 Compaq I have. I purchased a Compaq PC for some other needs we have, and it hasn't had a single problem at all. It also had a very small profit margin for Compaq, so they didn't short me on the deal. It's a AMD Athlon 64 3400+. Basically, it's a 64-BIT system with a 2.4 GHz CPU that supposed to compare to a 3.4 GHz Intel (which it does quite favorably). It's fast, powerful (for a PC), and definitely more reliable than either of the iMac G5's I've had.
I also sold my 3 or 4 year old HP computer last year, and it put in a strong service life. The new owners are still using it without any trouble (I know them). And, it never failed once. Again, I only paid about $400 for it as well.
I've owned tons of PC's and the following Mac's:
PowerMac G3 266-DT
iBook SE G3 366 (Indigo)
iMac G3 333 (Lime)
iMac G5 (rev. A) 1.8 GHz
Mac Mini 1.25 GHz
iMac G5 (rev. B) 2.0 GHz
And, the only systems I've ever had fail have been the two iMac G5 computers.
So, Apple's quality control seems to have gone down where the iMac G5's are concerned. I wish I could say that they were as reliable as my PC's, but unfortunately the PC's and the older Mac's are rock solid by comparison.

  • Brand new imac G5 17" won't start up

    Hello,
I just received my new imac today and was really disappointed when after I'd hooked everything up and when I hit the power button the screen stayed black and a small white light on the front turned on for just a second.
Any ideas??? I tried the online chat support--no help there... and, of course, there's no phone support right now. I'm really frustrated. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have a bad feeling it just doesn't work.

I feel your pain. I received a brand new 20" a few weeks ago with the same symptoms. Spent time on the phone with tech support and brought to local Apple Store only to hear them say the unit was DOA. The local Apple Store had not yet received the new 20" models so I had to send the unit back to Apple. I'm a first time Mac owner, and needless to say this was not the first experience I was looking for. I'm glad to say that my second one is running like a charm. You should be able to exchange yours for a new one at a local Apple Store, if you did not make any customizations on your order. Good luck.

After migrating all of my adobe software (Cs4, cs5, etc.) to my new imac, the software won't open due to many errors. Any help on this?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Adobe software is conflictive when you use Migration Assistant because their applications don't work properly after migration. If you keep the DVDs or the installers of your software, use them to reinstall all your Adobe applications and they should start working correctly

  • IMac G5 PowerPC won't start - any ideas?

My iMac G5 PowerPC won't start - the initial chime will sound, but nothing appears on the screen. After about 10 seconds the fan starts to run at a very high speed. The "on" light does not come on. To shut it down I hold control, open-apple, and press the start button.
Obviously, I am going to have to take it somewhere for a repair estimate but I would like to have some idea of what may be wrong.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Before we become too gloomy, first try re-setting the SMU. Very simple procedure. The chime is a bit of good news, but this could be the power supply, the logic board or both.

If this is a non-iSight model, you can take the back off (three captive screws at bottom; don't unscrew them too far, just enough to get the back loose.) Very easy to do. Then follow this procedure to see what the LED lights are saying about what might be wrong.

Also, look for swollen, or leaking capacitors on the board. They are numerous, little metal cans about 3/4 inch tall. Inspect for perfectly flat, not rounded, tops.

  • My iMac 2009 model won't start.

My iMac 2009 model won't start. Was working fine the night before, tried to on it but still no response. I also tried unplugging and plugging into the main switch plus other power points several times , doesn't work either. Please assist as most of work and important information are stored in it. Thank you

When you press the power button, what happens?  When you say "no response," does that mean it does not power on at all?
You unplugged from power and plugged it back, but I would try it again following this procedure for resetting SMC exactly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
When you connect it back, if you are using a "power strip," try connecting it directly to a wall outlet.  Be sure to check the connection of the power cord at the iMac end (disconnect and reconnect there too).  You should disconnect ALL cables from the iMac and try to start it up with only the power cord connected.

  • Creeated new account - but safari won't start anymore

I created a new account with a parental control. Logged in under the new account and Safari won't start anymore. It quits directly after starting. Any help suggestion ?
    Thanks much

Does it work in your old account?
If so, delete everything in the folder /Users/controlled account name/Library/InputManagers.
Also try deleting /Users/controlled account name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist.
(replace controlled account name with the name of the controlled account)

  • New iMac (2015-Yosemite) won't read old Time Capsule files

My new iMac 2015 (OS X Yosemite 10.10.1) won't read (access) my old backup files on the Time Capsule.  The old machine ( iMac 2007) is still backing up to the Time Capsule and still reads all the 2 years of backup files.  New machine only allows access to the current backup since I turned on the new machine early-January.   The old machine ( in another room ) accesses the Time Capsule via my local house wi-fi .   There is no crossover between the backups.  Old machine reads all up to now ON the old machine; new machine reads only that which is backed up on the new one since start-up.  How do I get the new iMac to read the old files ?

  • Brand new iMac 21.5" won't turn on - straight out the box

I just picked up my new iMac today and unpacked it etc, but it won't turn on. The wireless keyboard and mouse are supposed to be paired with it and ready to go, but the on switch on the keyboard won't turn the screen on (as far as I can tell there is no on switch on the iMac itself). The green light on the keyboard keeps blinking but doesn't connect to the iMac to turn it on. I've tried a different power cable in the iMac but that makes no difference. Does anyone know of a solution, or will it have to go back to the shop ( ) ?

The power switch is locate in the back on the lower left side as you look from the front. Did you connect the power cord and plug in the computer? There is no power button on the keyboard.

  • IMac (G1 Intel) won't start after having been shut down (for extended time)

I haven't been using 1st generation Intel iMac for about a year and after reconnecting it now it simply won't start. I have tried resetting SMC, no help. Also tried another outlet. The fans are not spinning up, nothing on the screen, no startup chime. It worked perfectly before I shut it down last tiime.
Any ideas what might be wrong, what to troubleshoot/fix?

Have you ever changed the PRAM battery - they run flat after a few years? Not sure if it would prevent booting if it were flat, but possibly.
Try leaving the Mac plugged in to a power socket for a few hours (if you haven't already) and then try again. If it does boot (bit of a long shot) get a new PRAM battery.

  • I have a new iMac, but it won't let me sync my playlists from my old iPod Nano to my iTunes library. How to do this?

The only options iTunes gives me is to erase my playlists and settings on my iPod; it won't let me download the playlists from my iPod to my iTunes account on my new iMac. If I do that, then I will have to manually re-enter every song on every playlist.
BTW - the advice on the Apple support pages doesn't help, because the screenshots they provide are completely different than what I have on my computer.
I did download the latest version of iTunes a few minutes ago.
I did authorize my computer to use this iPod.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • After Migration to new iMac, old Photoshop won't launch

I used the Migration Assistant in Firewire Target Disk Mode to transfer my old Apps and files and folders from my intel Macbook to my new 24" iMac. I had to do it several times since it transferred Applications okay, and all the folders, but the folders were empty on the new machine. I finally had to drag and drop the contents of most folders. Everything seems to be working okay now except for one glaring failure. My old Photoshop 7.0.1, which was working just fine in Rosetta on the Macbook, no longer works at all. It will not even launch. I get an error message that due to an "unrecoverable error" in programming, Photoshop will close now, almost as soon as it tries to start. I have a number of other Power PC applications (even Adobe ones) of similar vintage that are working just fine. I tried reinstalling the Application entirely (still have all my old Apps!), but it had no effect on the failure to launch. I checked with Adobe and they declined to support such an old version. Any ideas on what could be causing this that I might check? Having blown all my money on the new iMac I really cannot afford to purchase a new Photoshop right now.

Photoshop 7 is not compatible with Mac OS 10.5 and Adobe offers no fix. You'll need to upgrade.

  • 10.4.7. iMac 20" CoreDuo won't start any more

I did upload 10.4.7 yesterday together with iPhoto, iPod, iTunes (6.0.5.) and some other recent updates (altogether there were five, I cannot recall the last one). At first I did notice some “ticking” inside the iMac (2.0 GB RAM) every now and then, let’s say few minutes apart. That has never been heard before. Then this morning I noticed that iTunes was very slow. I did add few of my cd’s, and when attached the cover photo to the lower left corner the iTunes did update it very slowly, I think it took 1-2 minutes to add a photo to 12-15 songs. Then I did call Apple support (case #653790xx). The call took over an hour since everything I did on my computer was like slow motion. We did use DiskRepair and looked at the Console. When restarting the iMac it took several minutes, and when using safe re-start (shift on after re-start) the OS didn’t recognize my bluetooth keyboard. Then I was given advice to reload 10.4.7 from Apple’s site and install it again. Also I was asked to do Hardware Test (from install DVD). When I did try to re-install 10.4.7 there was an error after 71% uploaded, the installer asked to do that again. Then I did Hardware Test as advised, but there were no errors found (I did extended test with looping on and took several rounds). Next, when I tried to restart iMac from hard drive (Macintosh HD 10.4.7), it stopped repeatedly on Mac OS X window. Now I’m stucked, my iMac won’t start any more (I’m writing this by Windows machine, can you imagine?!)
I don’t know what’s wrong, but I have used Macintosh from 1987 (IIcx) and never, never before I have had these kind of problems. I suggest so far, that you take care when installing 10.4.7 on Intel iMac, I guess there might be a problem. I wonder why there is not email support for these kinds of problems and alert messages…? I’ll leave sailing tomorrow for two weeks and cannot report this by phone.
    iMac 20" (CoreDuo)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Only way to get iMac starting again was to re-install 10.4.4 from DVD, and then update it into 10.4.6. For a while it worked perfectly, just as before.
Then I tried to print to CD with my EPSON Stylus Photo 950 from Adobe Photoshop Elements (2.0). It didn't print anything, but printer started flashing all lights. The print job was not performed, so I did remove it from the Printer Utility. After that the iMac started "ticking" again, same noise than before, after 10.4.7 installation. I did re-boot iMac. It never started, it does stuck on gray screen (gray block running clockwise). HW test from DVD didn't find any problems (extended search looping 3 times). But Disk Utility found hard drive to have inaccurate node structure, it could not fix it.
Apple support recommended to use DiskWarrior. However, it does not support (yet) Intel Macs. I haven't got TechTool Pro 4.5.1 anywhere. iMac does start on to FireWire mode (T at boot), but I cannot see the disk from 10.2.8 iMac.
So, obvisously the problem is not 10.4.7. I believe it to be ESPON printer driver compatibility on Mac OSX. This does not suprise me, EPSON printers *****, I shall never purchase one again. However, disk catalog structure should not get messed by one faulty printer driver!

  • My new(ish) Samsung S4 won't start.

My new(ish) 30 day old Samsung S4 won't start.  It was working normally this morning.  Now it won't start.  I take out my battery plug it back in, and then the screen displays "samsung galaxy 4" for like a good 3 seconds. Is there any way I can fix this?

  • Brand new iMac 24 inch does not start

I went to best buy and bought the 24 inch 2.66 GHz iMac. We loved it when the apple guy gave us a demo. I brought the brand new iMac home and set it up. Pushed the power button - IMac does not power on. Tried diff options like changing plug socket, extension cord, removed and replaced power supply from back of iMac, but didnt work.
After an hour, I took the thing back to Best buy and they replaced it with a new one. Now this new one started right away and we really love this computer. Browed until late night, put it on sleep before going to sleep. Woke up in the morning, checked email and did some more browsing before I put it back to sleep and went to take a shower. After I come back and try to turn it ON, it wont turn ON. No matter what I did except this time I did not remove the power supply from the back of the Mac.
I called in for apple support as I was extremely concerned. The support guy asked me to hold the power button for 5 secs and try to power it back again. Nothing, didnt work. Next he asked me to remove all connections as well as the power supply from the back of the Mac and then turn it on. Lo and behold, came back up.
I asked the support guy as to what the heck is the problem and if this type problem has been reported earlier - he said he cannot comment on that. I really like this computer, but I am concerned as to its reliability. Anyone had similar problems? What was the problem and what did you do?

What the guy did was have you reset the SMC, the System Management Controller. It controls things like startups, shutdowns and sleeping.
Is the iMac plugged directly into a three prong wall outlet or are you using an extension cord or a cheat adapter? If you are using an extension cord, then it needs to be a proper three pronged utility cord and not a simple cord with a cheat adapter.
