New Macbook bought in Thailand - problems

Wondering if anyone has any helpful suggestions.
Just bought a Macbook 13.3 1ghz, 80gb hard drive combo drive.
All well and good and also purchased iworks 08 software as the internet over here is not the greatest and didn't want to have to purchase and download it online.
I bought all this from an apple authorised premium reseller. They insisted on me leaving everything with them overnight, so they could set it all up, load the software on, including Leopard. I didn't question this.
Picked up next day. and then the problems started. First of all I found they'd set up a password on the admin account so I couldn't change any admin settings/system preferences.
Also, I noticed that the old system had been left on the hard drive and the new operating system installled in addition. Is this normal??
For a standard install there seems to be an awful lot of hard drive space being used...from an 80gb hard drive I have 49gb available.
The old system is using 7gb and the new about 4gb.
I took it back in and they insisted no password was set but that the field had been left blank..but they still had to use the os install disc to boot from and reset password.
I queried the hard drive space but they said this was standard proceedure for a mac.
I can't find any way of contacting Apple via email direct and time difference makes phoning difficult.
I'd really like to know
1. what I should have had in the box
2. whether I can insist that it's set back to factory settings and I'm given the discs to load everythign myself
3. If there's any way of checking whether this really is the standard proceedure/installation/setup for a macbook.
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

This just gets worse and worse!
Thank you for the helpful suggestions - I took the advice and downloaded the most recent (dec 2007) spec from Apple Asia. The hardware seemed to check out (did 'about this mac') but the software no..I am supposed to have 10.5 Leopard discs.
So back I go to the shop (in Phuket for those interested - iStudio). It seems that the shop assistants failed to inform us we were in actual fact buying a model /a not model /b. which means we are in fact only supposed to have Tiger. Also I should have been told when I bought the Mac that it was the older model from this year and that's why the price! What price? I paid full whack as listed in the online shop!! And why I asked regardless of all this do I have a version of Leopard loaded as well as Tiger but only Tiger disks? Yes I think you're right, the oh so then helpful assistant loaded a bootleg version of leopard on there with ilife etc (I'd bought a retail version of iworks 08). When I saw him today he flatly denied when confronted by the technician having dealt with me, and then when I pointed out he'd filled out my sales receipt he denied saying he'd loaded Leopard, or asking me to come back in next day for the laptop or in fact pretty much anything I put to him.
Thailand is not the best of places for confrontation...you have to keep smiling no matter what which is pretty difficult when you're trying to show that you're not happy about the service you're getting.
I've since this all started written off for the upgrade discs for Leopard (available apparently for those buying Macs between Oct & Dec 2007).
They're still insisting I bring the macbook in AGAIN but to be honest I've now lost patience. I bought a Mac because I believed there were certain standards that were upheld no matter where the reseller etc. I've tried to get hold of Apple Asia repeatedly and they're office seems to be on permanent vacation! I'll take you're advice tomorrow and call the centre in Bangkok and see what they have to say about all this.
I have to wait 1 month for the discs and then I'll be resetting the macbook back to its original state pre-being messed about with by complete nits.
Strangely enough the receipt says no returns and no refunds...now I wonder why that is.

  • Does final cut express 4.0 work in new macbook bought in Oct 2013

I bought Final Cut Express 4.0 in 2008 and recently I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" around Oct 2013 and updated to Mavericks 10.9. I copied all the contents and apps from the old macbook to the new one and when using the Final Cut Express, it asked me for the serial number and when I tried to add it, it says serial not valid. What can I do to be able to use my Final Cut Express? Please any suggetions?

    Three thoughts,
    1.  It is usually better to re-install pro apps (like FCE) from scratch instead of migrating them from an older Mac.  If you migrated FCE from your old Mac, this could be the reason for the hiccup with the serial number.
    2.  The serial number is very long, and it's very easy to mistype a character.  Try entering it again, being very careful typing and check the serial nubmer visually before you hit the enter key.
    3.  Keep in mind that FCE was discontinued in June 2011, even before Lion was released.  It is no longer supported and there is no guarantee it will run, or run properly, on later versions of OS X including Mavericks.   Users have had spotty success with it on Lion, Mt. Lion & Mavericks.  YMMV.
Final Cut Pro X is the currently released & suported video editing app from Apple.   You can download, install & try it out free for 30 days.

  • My new MacBook Pro has display problems

I am new to Mac. I had purchased a brand new MacBook Pro 13 inches with i7 processor on April2 this year, Within 10 days the display screen started to grey out and later  on develop horizontal lines. I telephoned Apple support and when a telephonic solution  became unlikely I was asked to take it to an Apple Authorized service centre in my town. The technician there could not clearly explain to me what was wrong with the system, but I understood him to say that he has reinstalled the graphics driver and the system was trouble free for a prolonged time thereafter (at the service centre). I also understood him to say that should the problem recur again, he would have to replace the motherboard. I was on a travelling tour for a week after this and was not able to test out this repair (I took my old windows system with me for the travel) To my utter dismay the problem has recurred again after 28 days of purchase. I have attached screenshots. The button for uploaing videos is greyed out therefore  I will have to restrict myself to screenshots. All the three screen images occcur
in turn and the system becomes unusable and I have to use the poweroff button. The display problems start within 10 minutes of switiching on the system.
I took some time to discover these forums. The first time this problem occurred on my machin I posted this problem on mac-forums and I was advised to take it to an Apple store and let the apple genius bar worry about this one. I do not live wihtin any sort of manageable distance from such a place and the repair centre is an Apple Authorized Service Provider
Coming to the emotional aspects of this technological glitch. I feel like I have been hit by a truck.I had saved and scraped pennies to buy this dream machine and I believed I was escaping the ficleness of windows. But no windows system of mine (I have three) become so unusable
Will I have to spend time and effort to lug this machine to service centre to replace each of its component parts one by one ? Can I ever trust this machine to provide a presentation to an audience? What sort of an impression will I create if the system plays this trick on me in the middle of some presentation?

Shootis007, What is CC company? I googled CC and got many different answers.
I called Apple Support and told them my story and pressed for replacement and they told me repeatedly that there is no policy for replacement. The initial support person who attended my call asked me to take it to the seller and ask the seller for replacement. I dont think that is the way to go. I dont know what is his fault. He gave me a brand new system, the package was opened by me. Since I am new to Mac, I had taken a Mac user friend with me who showed me how to get started (right there in the shop) Neither the experienced Mac user friend nor I felt anything remiss at that time or later at the Seller level. Nevertheless I called the reseller and he explained his helplessness. I dont think it his fault at all.
Since I kept insisting on replacment I was put through to another support person who took pains to reassure me that I should get the defective part replaced and thereafter all will be well. For now I trust him. I have no other alternative
I really am puzzled. All you dear Mac users should know that the machine I dreamed of and really saved to purchase is giving me no end of troubles whereas my three windows machines sit there with their numerous stated deficiencies but gives me uninterrupted service

  • New MacBook Pro Image Related Problems

    Hello,
I see that there are already a lot of issues centering around networking problems with the new MacBook Pro. I would like to add mine to the list (I will be opening a ticket with AppleCare after this post).
I work for an educational institution, and one of the things we need is imaging capability to restore a notebook/computer to a "clean" state.
This has worked fine for all of our previous MacBook(Pro)s and desktop systems.
The new MacBook Pro is a big problem.
    1. It won't netboot (yes, I've created a new netboot image with the base image from a new MacBook Pro). Bootup dies, and sits there with an AppleYukon2 rcv ring overflow message being repeated.
    2. After being imaged with a 3rd party application (Casper), it won't communicate properly with Apple servers (roughly 1MB/Sec on a Gigabit network). Console log reveals an AppleYukon2 rcv ring overflow error message being repeated. Oddly enough communications with Windows servers is GREAT! But SMB file transfers between Apple servers ends up with the same AppleYukon2 error message.
    3. After being imaged with APPLE'S DISK UTILITY, I get the same results as the 3rd party utility.
I would like to know if anyone else who is working with disk imaging is have the same problem with the new MacBook Pros.
Has anyone else experience AppleYukon2 error messages with a rcv ring overflow?
    Thanks,

    YES, We do.
Brand new MacBookPro 17". Everything fine as standalone.
We plug it in our 1000BaseT (Gigabit) LAN. Transfer speed drops dramatically after about 30 seconds. Our 300MB test file transfer takes approx 90 minutes, not 30 seconds as usual. No error messages to the user, just an extreme slowness. Digging with console, we notice a repeating line (every second or two): "kernel[0]: AppleYukon2: 00000000,00000000 skgehw - cppSkDrvEvent - SKDRV_RXOVERFLOW: rcv ring overflow ", and sometimes this one: "AppleYukon2: 00000000,00000000 sky2 - RX ring overflow -- dropped a packet" or "AppleYukon2: 00000000,00000000 sky2 - RX ring overflow -- dropped 2 packets".
There is an option to stop the problem: we slow down to 100BaseTX the Eth speed (Network/Ethernet) and everything works, at moderate speed.
Oddy enough, if we: a) plug in or plug out a USB peripheral (as a card reader); or b) plug in or plug out a FireWire peripheral (as an external disk); or even c) mount or unmount a connected FireWire external disk; then the speed arises and console stops to get the error lines. Anyway the good effect lasts for 30 secons, then again in the mess. In short, if you repeatedly plugin/plugout you can transfer files.
For sure we will ask Apple, this is our situation at the present time.

  • New MacBook... Problems installing Mac OS X 10.4.6

Hey, if anybody could help me that'd be great.
I ordered a new MacBook online a week back, and it arrived yesterday. I turned it on and a blinking folder with a question mark on it was the only thing I saw.
So I attempted to install Mac OS X 10.4.6, but everytime I do, there is nothing to select when it says "Select Destination Volume for Installation." I've tried many things, but nothing seems to work. Please help!

  • Brand new Macbook, bought games from the Apple store, won't install!!!!!!!!

Hello folks, I finally broke down and entered the "MacWorld". While visiting my local Apple Store, my son became engrossed in a couple of games that were available for play. After much begging, I bought him two, fun, educational games, both Mac ready. One game, the "School Zone Kindergarten" easily installed one disk (the "math" portion), no problem. However, the second disk (the "reading" portion), just clicked and made funny sounds and was kicked out without installing. I tried several times. The second game, "Sponge Bob Typing" does the same thing, whirrs and clicks around but doesn't install.
I'm guessing this is operator error (as usual), so could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I was told Mac's are super user friendly, so what gives? Does mine hate me or something? Please help! I have a pretty upset little boy staring at me here, with his big sweet brown eyes, like I'm supposed to be able to DO anything. It's killing me! Please help! And many, many THANKS!

Thanks for your response. The "genius" told me it would work, I wonder if they will take it back? I know they usually don't return opened software, but......
In your case, and this is only my opinion, they will take the software back, since it's obvious it would not work and they said it would. Besides, you are a very good customer now
Anyway, what do you think is causing the glitch with the other game?
Since you have to go back to return the software, bring it all with you, along with the computer, and show the geniuses the problem.
You are covered for all this.
I think once you get things purring, you will be quite happy with your new acquisition, as well as your son.
Be very very sure to create a standard user account for your son. Keep your admin account for yourself.

  • New MacBook bought. Auto upgrade to Maverick when released?

I bought my MacBook Air 3 days ago and it is running mountain lion. I have heard Apple provide a copy of the new OS if they are released shortly after the MacBook is purchased. Will I get a copy of mavericks when it is released?

Apple has extended that courtesy to purchasers of new hardware with every OS version I can remember, but past performance does not guarantee future results.

  • New MacBook Air Photoshop CC Problems

I recently bought a 2014 Macbook Air. I own a Mac Pro which I generally use for Adobe CC, but I wanted something I could do light work on portably. As soon as I started working on Photoshop things were going crazy. The images started distorting, backgrounds would show my computer background instead of the default white background on photoshop, and the paint brush tools were pixelated. I don't know what is going on, and any help would be appreciated, as I have never had these kind of problems on my mac pro.

  • New Macbook bought in US not working in France with Livebox Orange Wifi

My macbook is one month old and was purchased in the US. I am now in the south of France, and I used it last night at the hotel with their wifi and it worked fine. Now I'm with my host family and they have Livebox Orange. It detects their account, but even after being connected it says service is unavailable. Also, the Airport Utility scans and nothing is detected so I can't change my base station. What can I do, download or change so that I can connect with their wifi?? PLEASE help!!

The Airport Utility is used if you have Airport express or Airport Extreme routers. Your problem seems to be with their router and/or modem and/or ISP. Either one or a combo. If they power down their modem and router and all computers are powered off and then re-powering up in 1 minute sequence; modem, router and each computer does that help?

  • New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Well some of you got the problem solved, but for me who has purchased my first apple device besides an Ipad, this is ridiculous.
It has been more than a month and have received 3 updates, 1st was seed update , then the new version and then a software update.
What is ironical is that none of the updates fixed the issue. The internet doesnot connect whenever you wake up your MBA after the 3rd update, earlier it used to just drop in between. Now have started seeing the browser in a Hung mode. The page would not load at all. The only way one can make the thing work is to restart it.
I would definitely want some permanent fix to see my hard earned money not just going down the drain in an Apple.
    <Edited By Host>

Why all these questions about routers and so on?
Apple is delivering a defective product, no more no less! The fault is with some ( or all?) 2013 MBAs and Apple is really not handling this in a way that can be expected.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • The NEW MACBOOK AIR ***** PLZ SOMEONE HELP ME GET THIS ACROSS TO SOMEONE AT APPLE

    Hi,
My Name is Essa and i live in Bahrain. I fell in love wih apple ever since i bought a macbook in 2005. The laptop (which im using now) has been with me for over 6 years. Not only i was happy with my product, i purchased more products, such as 3 iphones, all for me, a ipod nano the new one with the touch screen and the first edition of the iPad. I have never had a problem and everytime i would tell my friends if they needed a laptop to get a mac and be safe with it. I decided in august to get the new macbook air. The problem after a few months of using it, it started to act up. By act up i mean everytime i start it up the computer would freeze on the welcome screen and the arrow would be stuck in the top corner, and after several times of trying to start it up it just kept giving me that (PING) sound and would not load. I took it to the sale agent here in bahrain. They are called Apple Center. They were extremly nice, and worked on my laptop and they came back to me and said that there was an error with your logic board and it will take 4 weeks to fix it, as they had to recieve the parts form the states. I gladly gave them my laptop and waited for 4 weeks, keep in mind that i still used my old macbook in 2005 and it was stable as the day i bought it. After 4 weeks of waiting they said we have fixed the problem, and he showed me that the laptop was working fine. I closed the top keeping it on sleep mode. When i got home i realized that the same problem exisited that when the operating system loads up the cursor is stuck in the top left corner and mouse pad and keyboard were not working. After several times of shutting down the laptop and starting it up again i ended up with the same result. It kept giving me that (PING) sound and wouldnt load. I will be taking my laptop in on monday morning again and im assuming i will be waiting for another 4 weeks maybe more. Could you please explain to me what happened to Apple? What has made your company start producing laptop that were as crappy a windows based computers. The reason i switched over is because i found the stability is outstanding and nothing could go wrong. Plus the old laptop which im sending the messege from is my old macbook. It is still good, and doesnt crash. So why did i just spend over 1,500 dollars for a laptop that died after 3 months of purchase? I dont know how well apple takes care of their international customers, but to be honest i am fairly dissapointed with this product, and i wish that i didnt buy the new macbook air and just stuck with the old one. Please if anyone reads this msg and is able to help me in anyway to send it across i would greatly appreciate it. I will be posting my phone number at the bottom hopping for a call from apple.
For those who read this and help i owe you a lot, if I dont get any replies or a responce from them im sure that i am screaming into a black hole and that apple really do not care about their customers and instead of winning i would just choose a different product from now on.
    Regards,
    Essa Al Alawi
Hoping for someone to answer me back

Don't take your laptop back. Find out the number for Apple Care in your part of the world and call them. Tell your story to them. If the person on the phone can't help you, ask for their supervisor. Keep asking for supervisors until you get exactly what you want to get. If that mean you want to get the problem fixed without having the computer gone for four weeks, then keep asking for supervisors till you get someone who can do that for you.
Be prepared to be on the phone for a while, so arrange a speaker phone, water to hand etc. Be patient.
As for "crappy computers"--my MBA has worked flawlessly since the day I got it. As good if not better than any Apple laptop I've ever had, and I've had several. This is the thing though, there is a percentage of failure rate that occurs in electronics. It occurs whether we're talking about televison sets or toasters. If it's electric, it has that failure rate. Now sometimes a thing will be bad and in that case the word gets out and everyone knows that particular electronic has surpassed the normal failure percentage. The Airs, however, have not done that. Their reputation, so far, has been incredibly solid and good. So you can assume that you, unfortunately, got one out of that small percentage of electronics that have an issue.
Laptops, let us remember, are doing a lot in a very small area. A lot can go wrong, and it's pretty amazing how many don't, especially given how many are made and sold. Sometimes we get the bad apple in the barrel, it doesn' t mean that the company making it has gone down hill. We hope the manager of the store, or the company, or someone will do right by us. If they don't, then we need to make sure they do. Keep asking for upper management till you get what you want.

  • I bought a new macbook pro and iTunes will not let me purchase anything. All computers unregistered. This computer is registered. Cannot purchase anything using my apple id and my apple id works because i buy things on my i phone. What is the problem

I bought a new macbook pro and now every time i try to buy anything with my apple id it doesn't go through. I tried Ibooks and iTunes but neither one will work. I have registered this computer and even tried unregistering all the other computers but that did not do anything. I also checked my form of payment and that is not the problem either because i have no problems what so ever buying anything on my iPhone or my desktop computer.
    It is just this computer.
I try to buy something and something pops up and says... "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-45054). There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later."
And i have been trying later for 2days now.

Have you tried repairing disk permissions : iTunes download error -45054

  • I just bought a new MacBook Pro.  I managed to transfer everything to the new laptop.  BUT I'm having some real problems--e.g., wg from my older one to the new one.  Both use the same latest version of Snow Leopard.  My new laptop has the newer track pad.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro.  I managed to transfer everything from my older MacBook Pro to the new one.  Both use Snow Leopard, the latest update.
My new one has the newest trackpad, the old one, no.
I'm have big problems using Text Edit on the new laptop--the curser does not go where I want it to go for editing, I cannot get the text to be a clear or as large
as with the older Laptop.  Similarly, I cannot find a way to enlarge the menu bar.  But the text edit is my biggest problem right now.  I have reviewed all the preferences, particularly those in Universal Access, to no avail.
I finally gave up, used dropbox to send the text edit document to my old laptop, and continued with ease.  But this is not the way it should work.  I bought the
new laptop because the old one is showing signs of age.....
Is there something wrong with Text Edit while using the new trackpad?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)
