No default gw, Proxy, NetworkManager, WiFi, browser works, terminal no

Hi everybody,
i'm using Arch since some months and generally i'm able to solve all my problems on the wiki, but this time i cannot understand what's wrong...
Well, i have internet through a proxy with auth, so i set up all the env var (http_proxy and others, in BOTH cases).
Now the browser (chrome) works (i'm just writing this post...) and also a lot of applications which have their own proxy preferences work!
When i use something that relies on system-wide config (i think), it doesn't works! These includes pacman, ssh etc...
For example i can even use python to open some url, but after setting up the proxy in the urllib2 module. Pacman works if i use wget and wget config file...
Then i tried pinging something and this is the response:
$ ping www.giallozafferano.it
ping: unknown host www.giallozafferano.it
$ ping 8.8.8.8
connect: Network is unreachable
$ ping 10.250.9.250 #my proxy address
PING 10.250.9.250 (10.250.9.250) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 10.250.9.250: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.803 ms
It seems that the dns is not configured, the connection to internet is down, but the connection to the router is fine (i can also ping other users in the network).
I can only use the wireless connection and i'm using NetworkManager for the management.
The routing table seems to be wrong!!! Where is the default gateway??? Or maybe due to the proxy every request go to it???
$ route -nee
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface MSS Window irtt
10.250.9.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0 0 0 0
About the dns NetworkManager don't use the resolv.conf.head file, where i configured opendns and anyway it cannot find the dns (is the proxy that gives this info?)
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
I tried also with traceroute that create a route only to my proxy:
$ traceroute 10.250.9.250
traceroute to 10.250.9.250 (10.250.9.250), 30 hops max, 52 byte packets
1 10.250.9.250 (10.250.9.250) 4.034 ms 3.908 ms 5.885 ms
$ traceroute 8.8.8.8
traceroute: findsaddr: Can't find interface
Now i added the default gateway entry in the table, with my proxy address, but the def gw shouldn't be the wireless router address or what?
$ sudo route add default gw 10.250.9.250 wlan0
$ route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
default 10.250.9.250 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
10.250.9.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
With this config i have always the same problem...
I hope the info are enough!
I would really appreciate any help!
Thank you very much!!!!
Luca

still not solved...anyway does somebody know how to find the ip address of a router? so i can use that as default gateway

  • Bridge Browser and WiFi Browser Issues???

    Hey everyone,
I've had my Playbook since day one and I have been having issues that I can't seem to get resolved involving the Brdige Browser and WiFi browser.
On the Bridge Browser I can't browse to any webpages. I simply get a non-descript "Not Authorized HTTP://whatevertheurlwas.com" error message. Ive tried dozens of pages, reset the bridge, to no avail.
The other issue is with the WiFi browser. When I try to login to an Exchange 2010 OWA webmail site, I can't click certain check boxes (they arent grayed out, the clcik just wont function). Also - when I try and navigate to a SharePoint 2010 site I get an "Error - A network error has occured" message. It is accessible fine via an iPad, laptop, and desktop computer but not from the Playbook browser.
    Any ideas??

I spent about 3 hours with Support on this last night.
Explanation makes sense...could not verify it yet.
Bridge Browser by default uses "Blackberry Browser" to surf the net. If this option is disabled by BES Admin (assumption here is that you are on BES), you will not be able to surf the net. If you have BIS services also, your Blackberry  handset (assumption here is that you are on OS v6) tries to open a site through "Blackberry Browser" and then defaults through "Internet Browser"...which is why you are probably surf the net through your handset without any issues.
To verify this, install OS v5 and that gives you the option of picking the browser for your handset. If you get the same message after selecting "BLackberry Browser" on your phone...the above explanation can be confirmed. I am going to try it on my older Blackberry handset with OS v5 over the weekend.
Solution if the above explanation is verified:
Running the web browser in work mode
If the Allow Browser IT policy rule is set to Yes and you configure the BlackBerry® MDS Connection Service to connect a BlackBerry smartphone to the Internet and intranet, a BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet that is connected to the smartphone can run the web browser in work mode.
When the web browser runs in work mode, it does not use the Wi-Fi® connection that it uses when it runs in personal mode. Instead, the web browser can connect to the Internet or your organization's intranet using the smartphone's connection to the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service. The tablet encrypts any cached data that is stored on the tablet using the BlackBerry® Bridge™ work key.
A BlackBerry PlayBook tablet user can access the web browser in work mode by clicking the browser icon in the BlackBerry Bridge panel on the tablet, or by clicking on a link in a work application. When a user clicks a link in any work application, such as a link in work email messages, work calendar entries, the contact list, tasks, memos, or BlackBerry® Messenger messages, the web browser runs in work mode if any of the following conditions exist:•
    No Wi-Fi connection is available•
Web address does not contain periods•
MDS Browser Domains IT policy rule includes the domain of the web address•
Web address consists of a private IP address as specified in RFC 1918•
Value of the Wi-Fi Internet Access Path IT policy rule is set to "Access through BlackBerry MDS Connection Service"
If these conditions do not exist, the web browser runs in personal mode and connects to the Internet using a Wi-Fi connection.
The web browser cannot run in work mode if it cannot access the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service.

  • Wifi not working at Mcdonalds uk

Hi I have updated to the latest firmware 2.1 for the i pod touch and iam having problems getting the wifi to work at Mcdonalds. It worked perfectly before the update but now when i log on it finds the cloud network ok but when i try a web page it says it is not conected to the internet. It works fine at home with my router and it works ok on the airport bus which has wifi(belive it or not a bus with wifi) i have tried several Mcdonalds and no joy any ideas thanks....can anybody else in the uk have problems at mcdonalds

The settings and router for the two locations are going to be different. Look at Settings>WiFi and the name of the router (in blue to the right of the screen) will be different. Enter the WiFi panel by tapping on that section, and the network(s) will be listed. The MacDonalds one should have a tick next to it. To the right is a blue arrow and if you tap that and enter the settings panel the HTTP Proxy settings are near the bottom -- these can be entered for the individual router (e.g. McDonalds) but entering them will have no effect on the home settings.

  • How can I get my blackberry curve 8900 to update to 5.0 and get wifi to work?

I bought a blackberry curve 8900 around a year ago on an AT&T plan back when data plans werent required, so it just has minutes and texting. because of an issue i had with data before, i have data disabled completely on my account to prevent any mistaken data being used up and charging me. my AT&T contract recently expired so i called them up and got my blackberry unlocked, and will be soon switching to tmobile.
My problem is that it refuses to update past 4.6 over to 5.0 because of some restriction on it placed by AT&T, and my wifi wont work unless i have data enabled for the same reason. Is there anything i can do? I've tried installing 5.0 from different service providers onto my phone but it never installs properly.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
While you can (with just a trick or two) use any carriers OS package for your specific model number, it won't do any good since all 5.0 level OS's require a data plan, regardless of which carrier. So, without that, you can't update to 5.0. Further, it is the data plan that activates BIS -- which is what is used to run the BlackBerry Browser...hence that non-functionality also. Basically, a BB without a data plan is, to many, pretty useless.
There are other browsers that bypass BIS and will use a generic data plan (assuming you have that)...OperaMini and Bolt come to mind. You might give those a try.
    Good luck!

  • Windows 8.1 wifi not working after sleep (and other various bugs)

Hello Apple support forum, this is my first post!
Alright, so I just switched to my first mac. MBP Retina late '13. I bought it primarily to run windows, and to also of course use OS10.
My issues in bootcamp however are getting annoying. My Wifi shows up as connected after I resume from sleep, but my mac won't let me disable wifi, enable airplane mode and then re-enable wifi, nothing. The only way to get wifi to work when resuming from sleep is to reboot.
I just set hibernate when close lid on all my power modes, and basically disabled sleep for now. Hibernate works fine for now, but sleep is much faster from resume and also I'm not sure if the machine will wake up from a simple tap on the keyboard or opening of the lid, I think I have to actually boot it all over again anyways.
My other minor but still annoying issue is my titles of windows in windows are showing up as black (screenshot here)
the only other thing I was curious about was the dual-gpu functionality. I know from reading these forums it's probably not possible because of the hardware and software mesh apple created for OSX and their dual-gpu design, how it wouldn't really work in windows. I'm just wondering if anyone ever got this to work in windows maybe on the older retina MBP or older macs, or if anyone is making progress on trying to fix that in windows? I bought this laptop expecting that to work, even the geniuses at the Apple store said it would be possible, I was misled and might have second-gussed buying a 3k machine if it would only get a few more hours battery than my old Vaio. I bought this machine primarily for battery life.
I'm just remembering another tiny tiny issue. When I plug headphones in the headphone jack in windows, it doesn't automatically switch to that audio output, I have to manually do it in audio settings, is this a bug, have I configured something incorrectly, and is there a fix?
One other thing is my dpi settings, I have it set to a larger font and everything because at stock it is SOOO tiny. my question is, is there any way to smooth out text in other apps, my browser and apps like rdio look like crap unless I leave the dpi settings stock, which I basically need a magnifying glass to use (I tried that for a week lol. Not the magnifying glass tho haha)
I know I'm rambling at this point, but in the windows 8.1 camera app, sometimes my camera does this bug where it flips between inverted and normal, extremely quickly, so it looks like there are two of me. I don't know if this was GPU drivers tho, because just reinstalled those this morning and it seems to be ok so far.
also, the keyboard. I miss my context menu key, what do I need two command keys for? A right alt button, I'd rather have that be the other control button. Any way to remap these easily? what about switching Fn with control on the left, I prefer my windows button in the exact corner.
last question tho, I saw people overclocking gpu's on their retinas from last year, can you do this on the new retinas, and can you overclock the cpu as well as the gpu?
I do have to say this in the end, I am a little dissapointed with apple, I was told thst my mac would run windows like a native windows machine. I know windows 8.1 is not supported, but coming from PC's for years, and being a PC technician, I also go to school for computer engineering, I expected everything to "just work" as steve jobs once said. Well, it doesn't just work. I even had these issues in windows 8, which is supported.
Installing windows 8 was a nightmare. I had to use the forums, try for weeks to get windows 8 to finally instll the proper (uefi) way, and to get everything usable, I had to reinstall my os's twice.
Apple, if you are going to advertise a mac that can run windows "seamlessly", you need to get these major issues fixed, support all new versions of windows before they are even release, and release proper hardware drivers and support software before new hardware is released. All other Windows OEMS are pretty much required to do this to stay in business. I don't dislike OSX, I just use windows for everything I can't use Mac for, so please fix this. You're better than this, you should put a higher standard on this. otherwise, don't advertise macs that can run windows.
Thanks guys, sorry for the information overload. BTW, MBP Retina 15" 16GB RAM 512 SSD, 2.6 haswell, pretty much the max specs other than the SSD.

I have stated every issue I’ve had so far in a fairly clear and concise way. I think if you read what I wrote, it all makes logical sense as to what is going on. Windows 7/8 would work just as well on a Mac if it was supported the same way the OS is for other OEMs.
As I stated earlier in the post, I’m having these same issues in windows 8, not just 8.1, which is the reason for the post. I know the difference between supported by drivers and not supported by the manufacturer. The fact that when Haswell mbp’s came out and no revision to bootcamp for the new hardware was released to fix issues with installing windows on the new hardware shows Apple clearly Is not supporting bootcamp as strongly as they advertise.
I am being realistic on Apple having drivers early. Anyone with an MSDN subscription can download the RELEASE version of windows months ahead of the actual release, I’m 100% sure if any average consumer can do that by paying $100 and saying they are a developer, apple can do it just as easily.
You aren’t much help, you haven’t answered really anything to my post, nor have you contributed any knowledge that wasn’t clearly posted above, so don’t say anything if you don’t have anything to contribute.
By the way, my rant is directed at apple, as you can see because I am saying “Apple, if you are going to…” because this is an Apple forum on Apple’s website. It is not directed to end users, clearly.

  • How can I get my Wifi to work again on iphone?

Ever since I updated my IOS, I have had trouble with my Wifi.  I can connect at home where the password is stored and there is no issue.  When I go to work, I cannot connect.  My work has a public Wifi where every day that you sign on and try to go to a webpage, it redirects you to the company site where you need to click a button to approve the Wifi terms of service.  This worked on my iphone for months and now does not work ever.  It says that it connects to "public," says that there is a strong connection, but it never redirects me to that approval page anymore, so I can't ever actually use the Wifi even though I am connected.  This is incredibly frustrating, and I'm about to get rid of the phone.  I never had this issue with my Droid (among other irritating issues.)  I have tried numerous things on numerous occassions including rebooting the phone, turning Wifi off and on and off and on, changing the proxy settings, forgetting the network, resetting the network settings completely, trying to sign on to different websites in hopes that one would redirect to the approval page...nothing works.
Does anyone know how to fix this?  Is there any way to go back to an older IOS that allowed my Wifi to work?  PLEASE HELP!!!!

Upgrade to a Samsung Galaxy since your iPhone, like mine, is a nice-looking POS that doesn't do what it is purported to do within 16 months of purchase.  My upgrade cannot get here soon enough.

  • What should the"default behavior" be for WiFi network connections?

I Have been able to at least temporarily fix the plethora of problems encountered after downloading Mountain Lion to my 2009 17" MBP just ten days ago.  Thanks to the time and effort of so many posters that are much more savvy than me, I successfully executed the steps suggested in many of the posts and with good results.  It surely beats running down to the Apple store and being told that I am the only one with a problem.
Okay,  I've  realized that I don't really know what the default behavior of the WiFi network connection should be?
    Specifically:
Should the Wi-Fi drop down in Network always be" looking for networks", even though I am obviously on my Network?
Should the Wi-Fi be connected at all times even when your computer is in sleep mode- or deep sleep mode?  There have been so many problems with Wi-Fi dropping off, slow or hanging loads, etc.
I unchecked "ask to join networks, in Network preferences thinking it might stop looking for networks when it doesn't need to because I'm already on mine.  I do see my neighbors (four neighbors) in the drop down in Network.
How do you get into Time Capsule's settings, to check speeds, especially ping?  What should the ideal settings be?
How do you know if your DHCP license is renewed? I've heard that feature isn't working and may be the culprit to some of the Wi-Fi problems.
I'll look forward to your help in understanding more about this.  I've been in the support  area a lot lately, I've read plenty of definitions, and explanations of the different options to choose from in Apple's support area, but nowhere have I seen anything that explains what the default behavior should be or perform  like.
    Thanks, as always.

Generally, you don't want to tweak the wifi settings. It pretty much takes care of itself. The caveat to that is, of course, if you're experiencing problems.
The 'looking for networks' behaviour only happens when you log in, wake the mac from sleep OR when you click on the wifi icon. You clicking on it tells the mac  "I want to see what networks are available" - so it does a scan for you to check to see if any new networks have appeared since you last clicked on it (or woke/logged in). In short, if you don't want it to look for new networks, don't click on the icon!
Unchecking the 'ask to join networks' option only applies when your mac detects a new network (such as when it wakes) that you haven't already authorised; it'll ask you to confirm whether you want to join it or not. Otherwise, if the network is open it'll join automatically. You should keep this selected if you travel around with your Mac. It's a good idea to know what network you're on before you start plugging in passwords or typing other things into the mac.
There is a utility that you can use for ping and traceroute called 'Network Utility'. Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right of your screen and type "Network' and you should see it at the top of the list. Hit 'return' to open it.
DHCP licences are normally renewed automatically by your router every 24 hours. Again, there's no reason to be messing about with that unless you're experiencing problems.
If you're experiencing wifi dropout, let us know, and we'll make some suggestions, but if you're not, you're best leaving your mac to manage the background processes. It knows what it's doing!

  • [Solved] Broadcom BCM43142 Network controller - can't get WiFi to work

    Hi all,
I'm new to Arch and I can't set up my WiFi to work properly.
Using Gnome 3 and NetworkManager, I installed  the recommended driver (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl-dkms/) according to the instructions. That worked fine.
When I enable NetworkManager.service, the WiFi tries to connect. During this period it works for some seconds, but than it breaks. My Wired Connection only works when NetworkManager.service is disabled.
I even tried several ways from this and other Wikis, but none of them seem to work.
BTW, I tried Arch some weeks ago on the same machine and i got it to work, but I don't know how I did this anymore. Under ArchBang Live Media it works ootb.
I'm posting some outputs, don't know if they might be helpful  (all with NetworkManager.service disabled).

  • Firefox & foxmarks on ipod touch for wifi browsing?

I'm thinking of getting a 32gb touch for a video player when i work out and so i can have a wifi browser when i don't feel like taking the MBP out of the bag....
Will the touch instal firefox with foxmarks? that way i can have all my "bookmarks" when i use wifi....
also what are the limits of the touch? can i go to my google mail and my hotmail accounts? does the touch do flash yet?
    thanks for the help...

As far as I know -- no Firefox or Foxmarks. Safari on the Touch will sync bookmarks with Internet Explorer, so what I did was to clear out all Favorites in IE (since I don't use it anyway) and imported my Bookmarks from Firefox into IE. I then cleaned those up and deleted quite a few, since I had tons that I didn't need or want on the Touch, and did the sync with IE favorites.
It at least got my bookmarks onto the Touch. There's no way to keep them synchronized with Firefox, but in my case at least that isn't a real problem.

    Hi,
WIFI stopped working after I woke the computer up, now says connected to the network but not the internet, all other coputers and devices connected still with no problems, have pinged IP address from router and got the message "4 packets sent none received"... Help
I have tried network diagnostics which doesnt help... The only other ting is, when I woke the computer up it said tat another device was using my IP... My wife had plugged her phone into the computer to charge etc but even when i turn wifi off on the phone there is no change... also in settings on the phone the IP address is different...

The answer to your question is - neither!
Your PC should to configured to obtain an IP address automatically, and to obtain DNS server IP addresses automatically, from the Airport Express. This is the way Windows (and Macs for that matter) are configued by default, and that is the way most people have their computers set up. If you manually configured your PC's IP address to be the same as your wife's Mac, it certainly explains why your PC is not able to access the internet.

  • Upgraded to Belle from anna now wifi wont work on ...

    things i tried
manually enetered and saved access point of wifi network.

    Hi miller5280
Can you please explain the steps you took to "activate" your phone again?
    I am having this problem:
    1) after upgrade to the new software, phone was stuck in recovery mode (usb-itunes picture). Not jailbroken either.
    2) have done the "reset" i.e. off button & home button together
    2) I reinstalled itunes many times
    3) switch usb port many times
    4) de-auth / re-auth many times as well as purchased / download free apps (however, unable to sync due to itunes not recognizing the phone)
    5) BUT it still won't restore (error codes such as 13, 14 0r 1604)
Can you or any here help me?? Can't use the phone at all. Very frustrating.....
    Tks

  • Connected to Wifi - Internet works but not email or BBM

I am currently using my blackberry abroad on a wireless connection to ensure that I do not run up huge data bills.
My Curve 3g is connected to the wi-fi network and allows me to surf the internet with no problems.
However I cannot use my email or BBM, I am unable to send or receive messages with either.  This is very strange as I have used this wi-fi connection before when I was last abroad.
To my knowldege I have not altered any settings.
I would be very greateful if somebody could help me unravel this mystery.
    Cheers
    Nick

  • Hi, i am not able to connect to the internet. wifi not working.

hi, i am not able to connect to the internet. wifi not working. not able to find proper drivers for 32 bit win.7 os. need urgent help..
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
I can give you the link to the wifi driver, if you do the following steps to post the hardware ID for the wireless card, so I can figure out what model wireless card the notebook has...
To find the hardware ID, go to the device manager and click on the device labeled Network Controller.
Then click on the Details tab at the top of the Network Controller window.
Now you see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description.
Drop down on that list and select the second item (Hardware ID's).
