No disks found on Time Capsule

My time capsule does not show any partitions/disks. I tried a factory reset, hard power down and nothing has worked. Also, the TC is very hot to the touch. I am unable to backup or use time machine.
Is this a trip to the Apple Store?
Thanks,
Bob

I got my time capsule in March 2008. Worked fine as a wireless hub, but often the disk would disappear for no apparent reason and then wouldn't work until Airport utility downloaded an update to the firmware.
After 6 months of this, I think I finally have identified the pattern of events that causes (and fixes) this. For me, everything works fine until you powerdown the TC and then I cant see the disk until Airport Utility next updates the firmware. So my fix, is to update the firmware manually.
Here is the sequence of events. Hopefully it will be helpful to you.
1. Timecapsule works fine for wireless and timemachine (very happy person!)
2. I power-off the timecapulse (to rearrange the cables or the power supply to the house trips - whatever)
3. When the TC comes back up, wireless is fine, but I cant see the disk, so Time Machine doesn't work
4. No amount of resets, hard resets, auto or manual configs make any difference (very frustrating!!)
Now here's the bit that works for me
5. Go into Airport Utility, and click the 'Airport Utility' Menu
6. While holding the 'option' key, select the 'Check for Updates...' option. This allows you to reload the firmware even if it is up-to-date
7. Select the latest firmware and choose update.
8. When the TC comes back, you can see the disk (deep joy!)
I don't know why this works, and it doesn't make a great deal of sense to me, but as I say I have wasted many (many!) hours on step 4 (above) over the last 6 months, and the firmware update is the only thing that does the trick.
Hope this helps.

    Any ideas?

I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.

  • HT1331 How to connect external hard disk to airport time capsule and use it throughmy ipad ?

I Have connected an external usb hard disk to airport time capsule. pleasea help me to configure it from my ipad and use it from my ipad.

You need the disk formatted HFS+ on a Mac.. you cannot format disks from the airport utility and there is no hard disk utility of course on ipad.
Once you set it to share.. then you need to load a file app to the ipad as it has no ability to natively handle files.. check out filebrowser as a standard one.. but there are several available.

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again
Check to make sure that you are running firmware 7.6.4 on the Time Capsule

Often, this error can be corrected by pulling the power on the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and powering the Time Capsule back up.

The unplugging was of power, if you were unplugging ethernet .. that will not do anything.
    The issue is explained here.

If a restart of the TC is not adequate you maybe in the 2% that has other issues.. please try a full network restart in correct order.. with everything off.. modem.. then TC.. then clients.. with 2min gap to allow modem and TC to finish boot process.

  • Extra hard disk via USB time capsule (2TB) does not show in finder etc

I've found hunderds of questions that look alike but not one has solved it.
I have a Time Capsule with 2 TB hard disk. In all descriptions of the TC Apple states that an extra drive can be attached through the USB.
I did that. Wanting to create an extra network drive.  I connected a (Apple formatted) WD Essential to the USB. With te newest airport configuration programm I do not see the hard drive. I do see it with version 5.6.  BUT: I cannot see what is on it and so (not) select anything. I don't see it with the finder. I did do everything to make sharing possible. When connected directly to IMac it works fine. In airport I selected sharing etc etc.  I don't want the disk to be used as a backup system (via Time Machine). Just an extra network disk. Please help.

I don't have a Time Capsule; I have an AirPort Extreme Base Station, which is similar except for not having the built-in storage.  Since your question got moved from the initial category (where you posted it) to Time Capsule, maybe someone else who has a Time Capsule will pop by with some advice.  If you don't get any more replies (other than from me), you may want to summarized what you learned so far, and post a new question (in this category).  New questions often get more views and responses.
With a Time Capsule, you can share the built-in hard drive as general network storage (not just for Time Machine  purposes), is that correct?  Does that work for you?  Can you set that up using the latest version of AirPort Utility?
If you set that up, I'm guessing it would appear in a Finder window in the same way.  The Time Capsule appears in the Finder window sidebar, under SHARED.  When you select it, the Time Machine's built-in shared volume appears to the right, and you can mount it using whatever security settings you used.  If you have an external drive attached to the Time Capsule as well, and it is set up to be shared, it appears as a second shared volume.  It is still just that one Time Capsule under SHARED in the Finder window's sidebar, but to the right, there are now two shared volumes.  But I don't have a Time Capsule, so I'm not sure about that...
I don't know why the latest version of AirPort Utility does not see the external drive volume?  If possible, I would try another USB storage device (even if it's a 4GB thumb drive), to confirm it does work, and it's not a hardware problem on the Time Capsule's USB port.
Also, if you have not tried so far, you may want to reset your Time Capsule (to give it a fresh start).

  • Time machine back ups can not be found in Time Capsule

    Hi
My time machine stopped worked a few weeks ago. It started showing an error indicating that sparse bundle couldnt be found. I could still see the 'Time machine backups' drive in Finder, but after a few days, it stopped showing it. Previously to it, I had started using some spare space within the Time Capsule as extra space to save some data. So now, I can only see that folder I used to save some extra data, but not a trace from the 'Time machine backups'. But I can see i have only 600 Gb free in the Time Capsule when it is 2 Tb and my data takes about 300 Gb.
    Anybody can help here?
I am running Lion and have the 2Tb Time machine (bought 1 year ago)

Have you done a simple reboot of everything. The TC first and then the whole network, restart in correct order.. Modem.. TC.. clients.. with 2min gap.
A lost sparsebundle should then be found.
Otherwise look at some of the stuff from Pondini, as this is fairly common issue. More common lately on Mountain Lion but it did also affect lion.
Look at C12 and C17 as these are the most common ones.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Come back to us if you have issues having done the above.
One important question.. did you put this extra data inside the sparsebundle.. or in a separate directory under data on the hard disk.. if you put it inside the sparsebundle of TM.. you will have totally messed up the backup.

  • I have "lost" the time machine disk on my time capsule. How can I get it back?

I went to restore a Word document from January 2010. When I went into Time Machine to restore it, I found that the current backups only go back to May 2013. I've had the Time Capsule at least a couple of years longer than that. I tried going into Time Machine to select disk, and ended up deleting the existing disk and being offered a new one.
However, I know that the old backups (from May 2013 onwards, anyway) are still there. How can I reconnect to them via Time Machine?

It was the alt key that did it
Interesting, since it is the control key that works on my Mac....not option or alt.
Unfortunately, if you cannot select the disk in Time Machine Preferences as a Time Machine backup destination, you will have to go with what you have.
If it were me, I would probably erase the Time Capsule disk and simply start over again with a new backup set.

  • Clone the disk inside a time capsule for off site storage ?

I would like to do 'off-site' clones of the drive inside the time capsule. Anyone ever heard of anyone else attempting it? Love to take advantage of the usb port on the time capsule to do it...

With 7.3.1+ firmware on the Time Capsule (TC) you can archive the internal drive - copying its contents, including backup images of networked systems - to an externally connected USB drive.
The Archive option, can be found on the Disks tab of AirPort Utility 5.3.1+

  • Seagate drive no longer found on Time Capsule

I've been doing my Time Machine back ups to a USB Seagate drive that is attached to my Time Capsule for over 7 months now.  Everything was formatted correctly  from the start and had been working great. Until yesterday when I got an alert from Time Machine saying I was over due for a back up.  I went through Finder to my Time Capsule and couldn't find the Seagate icon.  I thought that was weird and restarted my Time Capsule and MBP. Still no luck and I even went and restored my Time Capsule to factory settings and it still will not read that the Seagate drive that is plugged into the USB port. Any help or advice on the issue???

  • Restrict disk access on Time Capsule

I have a 2TB Time Capsule with 2 external drives connected to it through a usb hub.
Now I want to restrict access to one of those external drives. Meaning I want one user on the network to have access to to the TC drive and all other external drives, while the other user should have access only to the TC drive and only one of the external drives.
Apparently there's no way to do it through Airport Utility (it can only grant/restrict access to all drives at once), so I thought there might be a way to do it through sharing permissions...
What would be the right way to do it? Can anyone help, please?
    Thanks.

As you have surmised, the Time Capsule (or AirPort Extreme) does not offer a lot of options in configuring to grant access to drives used by either.
Using the "With accounts" option, you can’t set permissions individually for folders or files on each hard disk, nor set permissions differently for different partitions or different hard disks.
In addition, when employing multiple drives, you really can't choose which partition will host the user-specific account folder ... the folder required to store the actual access permissions. On the partitions that don't have this folder, it is served as a single, whole-partition volume with no access controls. For the Time Capsule, these user account folders are always placed on the internal drive ... so it will be the attached drives without the controls.
If serving up multiple drives, each have unique access control criteria, I'm afraid that you will have to look at another solution.

  • Disk Utility on Time Capsule

I have and older (non-dual band) Time Capsule and I want to reformat to extended journaled so I can use it for transferring Aperture 3.0 projects. I dimly recall using FAT32 format when I first got it (don't ask).
However, the time capsule is not appearing in my choices for Disk Utility.
    Help!

The Time Capsule's internal drive is always Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If you're referring to an external drive, connect it to an USB port on the computer.
If for some reason you need to erase the internal drive, use the AirPort Utility instead. The Disk Utility doesn't operate on network drives.
