Nokia Drive 2.0 problem. Very poor map of Republic...

Problem is that map of Moldova is ultra poor in detail, no streets at all in any town, even in Kishinau, this is not a map, this is waste of space in memory.

I can't say I'm very impressed. Here is what happened trying to install Nokia Maps 3.0 on my N82.
1. I find the update and think, that ought to be easy I just download the installation file straight to my phone, install and go. Wrong. This update must be installed via a computer.
2. I download the file from the Nokia Maps homepage (not beta, official release) but discover it requires Ovi Suite to install. As I am not at home but on vacation I don't havethe USB-cable nor OVI installed on the computer. Luckily the computer I am using supports Bluetooth, so after installing the necessary drivers I can use that transfer method.
3. I download and install Ovi Suite.
4. Ovi Suite will only install if I firstdownload the .NET framework.
5. I install the necessary updates to the Ovi Suite
6. I connect to my phone using the BT-link. However, something goes wrong and the connection is broken. After restarting computer and phone I try to connect again, fist unpairing the phone. No dice but another restart solves the problem.
7. I start the Nokia maps application and try to install it. After a couple of minutes it gives me "Component built in"-error. The new Nokia maps can not be installed.
8. Searching for answers I see Nokia has known about this problem since several months (http://betalabs.nokia.com/forum/topic/680) but still has not bothered to fix it, the Nokia recommendation is to dactory reset your phone, losing everything you installed (of course, settings etc can be backed.up). So after several hours spent on this complicated process nothing is done.
I find it extremely poorly done by Nokia that they simply ignore such a problem for one of their premium phones. Had this been a beta-release I'd understand but not for an official release. S

    Hi,
Seems like Nokia Drive + beta doesn't work on my Lumia 920. I'm currently in Macedonia and trying to get directions from one location in Skopje to another always gives me the message: "Sorry , can't find your route. Navigation is not yet available in your country. Please go back."
I have the Macedonia map downloaded, and I have checked the list of supported countries, where Macedonia does appear. Nokia Maps seems to have no problem finding a route between the same two locations, but Nokia Drive + beta keeps giving me that message.
http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Maps-Navigation-and-GPS/In-which-countries-can-I-use-navigation-with... Nokia list here also shows Macedonia is supported.
Nokia Drive version: 2.1.0.1451, map 8.0.48.113 (info from Nokia Drive + beta about screen)
    Any ideas?

For me it doesn't work even if the location is only 2.2km away. lol @ fuel company shares
I wonder if we can get someone in tech support at Nokia to read this. I've tried contacting their support chat but we didn't get far (or anywhere for that matter). I'd like to know whether this issue is known or not, and whether a fix is planned. If it's an isolated case, what can I do to make it right? I'm willing to work with someone in order to get this resolved.

  • Nokia Drive lacks Serbia map

    Hi,
I am using Lumia since launch, and one of functions I wanted is a good navigation application. Then I got a Nokia Drive, but there is no map for my country (well there is, only two main highways are mapped...)? All other navigation companies have very detailed maps of Serbia(iGo, Garmin, Navigon). It's even more ridicoluos that many of them use Navteq maps... Almost any other European country have detailed maps. Anybody can give a reasonable explanation for this? I can't understand that

    There's no reasonable explanation man

Yes a lot of people are having this issue it's from the ios 6 update. Some users are reporting battery drains a lot after updating their device
There have always been a lot of battery problems posted about in these forums following each and every iOS update.  Personally, I believe that the battery really isn't discharging any faster, it is just that the charging circuit is confused and needs to be reset. I always perform a setup as a new phone for major updates, for example iOS3 to iOS4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6, which should be a 'reset' for the charging system, but I do a simple update for point releases--6.0 to 6.0.1, etc.  I have never had a problem with battery performance when performing the full update as new, only when I did a 'normal' update for a point release.  If I perform an update with a restore from the old backup after a major update the battery problem did appear.
After every iOS point update I always do a full reset--home and on/off buttons held down until the Apple appears--three or four times over the course of a couple of days.  I allow the phone to fully charge overnight every night.
This has always resulted in 'normal' battery life after one or a few reset cycles.  By 'normal' I mean that a fully charged iPhone, with email and other notifications enabled and set to push, and no particular attention paid to battery conserving techniques, will discharge to about 89% over a 10 hour day.  If I make a few phone calls and surf the web a bit then the level has fell to 70% or so, but unless I heavily use my iPhone 5 it doesn't drop below that point.
Prior to performing the resets the charge level would sometimes drop into the 50's or 60's or even lower in a few hours without using the iPhone.  This problem 'scenario' has happened with every iPhone I have ever owned and I've owned all but the original iPhone.
As always, YMMV.  I make no claims as to its usability for anyone else.

Also David, it seems like you know of this particular traffic arrangement. Wouldn't it just be simpler to use that knowledge? I have a hard time using navigation in the city in which I live; I tend to actually know directions and routes better than it. But that, of course, is just me. All the best to you, mate!

  • Using Nokia Maps favorites into Nokia Drive

    Hello everyone,
is there a way to use my Nokia maps favorites into Nokia drive ?, i don't understand why we don't still have that option in a menu somewhere already.
    Thank you for your help

Which lumia have you got? If you have a wp8 device and the latest Nokia Maps update you should be able to access your favourites using Nokia Maps and navigate from there which will automatically start Nokia Drve.

GoodReaderUSB originally worked by transferring files to a special location on a user’s iPhone, which iPhone’s GoodReader app was able to access. However, accessing this location was a violation of Apple’s iPhone SDK Agreement, because the app had to access files outside its own private storage space, which is forbidden by Apple.
Because of this, your only choice to fix this. at this point, may be to restore your phone as a "new" device in itunes and NOT from backup. Follow this by syncing your content back to your phone. Unfortunately, ALL saved data on your phone will be lost.

WP is a completely different OS. The team effectively started from scratch. Whwn the Lumia 800 was first launched, even Drive didn't do offline. The plan is to eventually provide the same user experience for WP. Will see how far they have gone with the next iteration.
And no one were thinking of starting the development earlier, so that the Lumia navigation had been at least as good as on several years old Symbian when the Lumias were released almost a year ago?
Maps and Drive on my Lumia 920 can now be fully used in Offline mode. You can search for addresses and use turn by turn navigation without the need for an internet connection.

  • Using Nokia Drive Offline

We've just bought two Lumias (920 & 620), our first Nokias since 2002, and have been delighted with them.
However, I have a concern about Nokia Drive. For a "free" App still in Beta it is excellent but it does seem unusable offline, being unable to find many major roads even in London. Allowing online search is essential to plan a route almost anywhere.
For home country use this is not an issue for most people who have data allowances in their contracts and PAYG top-ups but searching while roaming (and this is when you most often *really* need SatNav) could generate unwanted and unpredictable charges.
I'm travelling to Spain this summer and don't want to get to get stuck somewhere that has no network coverage. My questions are:
    * Why is the offline data so poor (yet downloaded maps appear quite detailed)
    * Will this problem be addressed any time soon
Might have to dust off the crabby old HTC Kaiser with TomTom this summer.

OK so I agree that you can get the basic street layout in airplane mode.
But I want to be able to get all the data - at very least the street names, and ideally landmark pins - which I don't currently get. Is there any way to control what level of detail is downloaded?

  • Nokia Drive+ Beta for Lumia 920 - WP8

    Hi,
I have some questions regarding the use of Nokia Drive (sorry, I came back to WP after several years on Android so too used to using Google Maps).
    My questions are:
    1. Is there a way to route around what the 'default' route comes up with?  For example, I do not want to drive through NYC and would rather drive around it using specific highways that I'm used to using.  I know it's further, but it avoid GW Bridge which can be several hours in traffic if not timed properly.
    2. Is there any website where I can plan/setup the various trips/routes and then just have it sync back to the phone (this is typically what I do with all my Google's map usage).
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I "try" google maps offline on my Galaxy S 2 and Galaxy Nexus regularly when i am abroad, just as a backup to my N9 which I use as my main navigation device. First problem with google maps is the map data. You can only download a few tiles. The search function and routing dont work very well offline either. Of course there are better paid options but Nokia Maps isn't all that bad for a free solution. The avtual Nokia Maps package is better then the current experience with Maps on the Lumia devices. This is because WP is a new OS for Nokia and they had to start Maps from scratch for this OS and they are still.playing catchup. I was fortunate enough to have a chat with a member of the Lumia Maps team who promised me that the intention is for users to have the same nav experience as other Nokia devices. With the latest beta iteration, they are almost there. Hope they will be there with the final release.

  • NB205 - very poor product and service, do not buy Toshiba!! Completely dead in 6 months

I am posting this to warn as many people as possible to avoid buying Toshiba in the future.  Not only was the product faulty, which I can understand sometimes happens w mass production.  But the service was completely unacceptable, which was the deciding factor for me.
    1.  My new Netbook NB-205/BL started intermittently shutting down for no reason (complete black screen, not even to blue screen).  By the time I returned home from my trip it had stopped working altogether.  The power light will come on, and the fan/hard disk will try to spin for a split second and then go silent and stop completely.
    2.  Upon calling tech support who walked me through a bunch of diagnostic attempts (removing and re-inserting battery, etc.), they concluded it was dead and I needed to send it in.
    3.  The only thing I really care about is my data as I had stored a bunch of invaluable photos and downloaded about $200 worth of Amazon MP3s since receiving the Toshiba NB205.
    4.  Tech support assured me they would back up the hard drive for me and ship either a fixed or new computer with all my data still intact.  They asked me to register it w their warranty department and call them back so they could send me a shipping box to send it back in.  I did all that and it's been >3 weeks and no box.
    5.  So today I called Tech Support again and the guy goes "Oh yes, you have shipped your computer in for a hard drive failure?".  At which point I had to explain how A) it's not a hard drive failure B) I haven't shipped anything anywhere because I never got the box I was promised.
    6.  Then I proceed to ask him again if my data would be safe, to which he informs me it's Toshiba policy/practice not to back up data for customers.  I found this to be unacceptable and then I didn't know who to trust so I asked for a supervisor.
    7.  This supervisor wasn't able to help me either as he further informed me that they will not back anything up for me AND that I had to pay for shipping AND pay an authorized Toshiba Repair Center to back my hard drive up.
    8.  I suggested what everyone who I've talked to has said:  Toshiba could send me a new computer since they've diagnosed the old one as being dead.  I could swap out the hard drives, or they could send me one without a hard drive.  And I could send them back the dead NB205.
    9.  NO was the answer.  Toshiba wouldn't do anything for me, because software issues are NOT under warranty.  And backing up my hard drive is considered to be a software issue.  I repeatedly told him that it's their defective hardware that is causing the need for data backup.  But this went ignored and I was told they don't cover anything in this case.
I either had to lose my data or pay probably $100 for a Toshiba dealer to back up my data for me.  Oh yeah, and there isn't one of those within 20 miles of me and I live in Silicon Valley!!  Oh yes, and they want me to pay to ship them the dead computer.
    10.  I finally asked him how he would feel if he was the customer, and if he felt this was any way to treat Toshiba customers.  He replied by saying they have a process, and this is the process!
Well the next time I and any of you are in our "process" of deciding which brand of technology to buy, I'm certainly not going to consider Toshiba anymore.  This is the second chance I'm giving Toshiba after having a very poor laptop AND service experience in 2000.  Well, it took me 9 years to give them another shot, and I'm never going to trust them again.  I told myself "well, it's a high quality Japanese brand, one that commands a premium in price that people are willing to pay so it should be an excellent product.  AND if things do go pooryly, Toshiba will stand behind their name."
I was SO wrong!!!  Let this be a message to all people out there, as I did read these forums before buying my product, but the NB205 was so new it didn't have many posts.
Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me!  I'm done with you Toshiba, it's really too bad that you will not honor your brand with fair treatment of your customers.
    Ming Wu

It isn't that difficult to back up the data from the hard drive.  You can easily do it yourself for about $20.  http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/recover-data-from-failed-laptop-notebook/
As for Toshiba backing up your data, ALL of the manufacturer's have that same policy.  NONE of them will backup the data for you nor will they guarantee that your system will be returned with the existing data intact.  This is spelled out in the Warranty documents and is fairly common knowledge amongst most computer users.
If the data was that important you should have been backing it up to USB flash drives, a usb external hard drive, or some other backup device on a daily basis just for this very reason.  The fact that you failed to do so doesn't make it Toshiba's problem.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Routing issue with Nokia Drive on Lumia 900

So I finally tried to use Nokia Drive on a real trip (in New Jersey, USA) and I've noticed that the software often seems stuck on returning you to the originally plotted route when you deviate from it, instead of finding the best remaining route based on the new location. I'll give details for my particular trip in case this is a local issue.
We decided to take the NJ Turnpike to route 18 to River Road to Interstate 287 instead of 295 to 206 to 287 as Nokia Drive recommended (the routes are roughly equivalent in travel time, so I don't fault this initial route selection). When we entered the Turnpike, the new route kept trying to get us to 295 until we passed Exit 7 (In reality, past Exit 5 there isa considerable penalty to getting off the turnpike and onto I 295).
Finally, after Exit 7 it decided we should stay on the turnpike and get to 287 directly using Exit 10 (This too is roughly equivalent in travel time, so it was a reasonable suggestion). Once we took Exit 9 to route 18 instead it picked a different route than the one we are familiar with and this is where the biggest problem occurred. The route it suggested would enter 287 North at Exit 7, while the route we took entered 287 at Exit 9. It kept insisting we get back on its rout and get on at exit 7 to the point that when we were about to enter 287 at exit 9, it told us to get onto 287 *south* and take it to exit 7 where we would exit the highway and immediately re-enter it northbound. This is rediculous and should never have been suggested.
Am I right in my assessment that the software tries to stick to the original route instead of calculating a new one on the spot? What possible advantage can there be in doing it this way?
    Thanks in advance,
    Boris

Here is a quite stupid example on route recalculation and how it tries to return to the route originally suggested. The recalculated route suggests that I turn right, drive a few meters and then make a U-turn. The error is not in map data itself. The other picture shows that turning left is not forbidden.

  • Nokia Drive questions on Lumia 800.

I bought a Lumia 800 over the weekend as my last phone was about to drive me around the twist. I've been very impressed with the Windows interface and the phone over all.
One of the reasons I went for the Lumia was the Nokia Drive app. I work in field sales and travel the length a breadth of this country so I need a reliable sat nav. Previously I've used CoPilot live on an Android which worked well for me.
This morning I did my first trip with the Nokia Drive app and it worked ok up until a point.
I received a call, no problems answered fine through bluetooth not an issue. HOWEVER when the call ended the Nokia Drive app did not resume/return to main screen. instead I got the lock screen with a very garbled background image.
Hoping the Nokia drive app was running in the background I kept driving but after a few turns it was planly clear that the app had closed. I therefore had to pull over to restart the app. Once I unlocked the screen the app did resume. I was just glad I was making a trip I was familiar with and testing the app functionality.
I take/make a lot of calls while travelling I need a nav app that I do not have to re-setup everytime I hang up a call. Can this be addressed in Nokia drive or can someone suggest an alternative app to use instead?
