Nokia 'repairs' - N8 dead again

Hi all,
When you return your dead phone to a dealer (O2 in my case) it gets sent off for repair. Do they really repair them or just re-flash the firmware?
So far I've had 1 replacement handset and 1 'repair', but I still I can't seem to get an N8 that works for more than a few weeks before it totally dies (even 3 fingered salute doesn't do anything).
It died again today - guess I'll be back at the O2 shop tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to ensure they do more than just re-flash the firmware?

Before you send in for repair, do the following:
1) Dial *#06# and get the IMEI number.
2) Loosen the Torx screw on either side just slightly.  And pick a position to remember, like one of the 6 pointed legs to point straight up or split.
When you get the phone back, if the IMEI number is different, then you got a replacement phone.
If the Torx screws are still loose the way you did them, then they simply reflashed the phone.
Hope this helps you in determining if O2 is doing anything at all.

  • Feedback for nokia repairs

is there some sort of feedback service for nokia repairs?
    is there an evaluation form?
I returned my n97 for 3 main reasons, scratched lens, gps not working and primarily and any call on 3G at 900Mhz, was of a quality so low that people literally could never understand what I was saying. Aswell as those 3 main reasons i reported that the phone would crash, freeze, or restart on a daily basis.
This was my experience... with nokia care
1st time they returned my handset and told me it was fine, they reinstalled the firmware, which I was clear I had already done myself.
2nd time they returned my handset, this time flashed to v11 firmware insisting that call qulaity was fine, before I sent it off i was very clear they need to test 900Mhz 3G as it is ONLY this that is faulty (which is what they have in my home town, repair centre is in 2100mhz area) (it already had v12 on it when i sent it off) (fixed lens though)
3rd time I insisted I wanted a new handset, or i would be talking to fair trading. they replaced with someone elses handset (and left some of the old persons settings such as internet profiles on it), (also once again has a scratched lens), but it fixed the call issues. gps is still dodgy as. This phone had someones own purchased screen protector on it, and also had very dirty keyboard and arrows from heavy use with dirty hands. wheras the one I sent away was in 'as new' condition.
So far I have hung onto this phone simply because each time i did this it was AT LEAST a week without my phone, that i am paying through the nose for, and each time it comes back I have to restore my phone and reinstall everything (I also discovered that backups made with the ovi suite beta cannot restore)
I am one very unhappy customer, and I would like to share my experience with nokia repairs via some sort of feedback, aswell as with nokia customers. I beleive that it is only fair that the company receives negative attention when they treat their customers so badly.

    Alex... i presume.
I have a similar story as to my 'local' repair centre (Australia too) a couple of years ago and yes I was quite unhappy, although I did eventually (3 times) get the phone replaced.
As for my Carrier (Optus) they are very helpful and prompt, however they were unable to fix a very simple issue that a Local shop fixed in less than 3 days!  Firmware issue - dead phone.  So in reality... you are 'stuffed' either way!
In 17 years, I have only ever owned 1 phone branded differently to a Nokia but I am starting to think they will not have my next sale.
As for this N97... how bad is some of the things on it?
No office doc reading software unless you buy the software extra?
I have only ever sent 20 sms's according to the Menu heading but inside there are many more than that and the number never changes!
Now I have a Mass Memory Error, that is very annoying and I guess another fight is coming up between the Carrier and Nokia?
Good job I have a good lawyer friend, because I might need I this time!

As I wrote Apple will diagnose an Apple product even if it is out of warranty for free. That should be your first step to find out if the problem is the battery or something else.
Once you have Apple telling you a 7 month old battery is defective (if that turns out to be the case)  then it becomes a game of horse trading. You'll need to speak to the tech and when he tells you there is nothing he can do you will need to speak to the tech manager and when she says most likely there is nothing they can do you go to the store manager, etc.  It is unlikely (though possible) that they will give in easily you need to be firm, polite and let on that you're willing to accept a partial reimbursement.
So again the first step is to find out what is wrong.
    good luck

  • I have the ipad3,and I plug my charger in to charge my ipad and it comes up with the charging battery sign charges for a few minuets and then the white apple sign loads up into the screen then my ipad goes dead again,I hope someone can help:)

I have an ipad 3, when I plug my charger in the ipad comes up with the sign to say it is charging and then the apple sign loads up as if the ipad is about to come on,but then the ipad just goes dead again,I've tried holding both buttons down and I have also tried charging it over night but still nothing is working.
    I hope someone could help:)

When you say you tried holding both buttons, did you mean you held both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appeared, ignoring the red slider if that appears?  If so, exactly what happens?
You may need to take the iPad and charger to an Apple store genius bar to be tested by the techicians.

  • Nokia Repair in UK

    Hi,
anyone had any experinece of getting a Nokia repaired in UK ? My phone was not working properly so I filled out the online form on this site and posted it off to Thetford a week ago. I have no confirmation that it has been recieved nor recieved an e-mail with a reference I am supposed to use to track the repair. I do not want to get into a situation where I am continually ringing Nokia at my expense. How long do I wait ?
Incidentally on the off chance anyone from Noika is reading. If you use the contact by e-mail option on the repair page on this site your e-mails get bounced back with the messgae that you can not e-mail directly and to use the ask Nokia option. I used the ask Nokia e-mail option but have no reply to that either.

    Update
telephone call fromm Nokia asking me to confirm my address. I did and then Nokia hung up with no explanation as to why they were asking or giving me any news of my repair.
I called back and was told that their systems went down just at the moment they were calling me. They were unable to update me or confirm if my handset had been recieved.

  • What firmware do nokia repair centres have ?? also...

I went into my superb nokia repair centre this morning as I had ghosting on my new nokia screen despite only having the phone for a week (i say they are superb cos they also fixed the other day my gps and also lense cover without hassle and only 1hr waiting) when i had a chat with them they said they would replace the screen and also update my firmware ... when i got my phone back and set it up after the hard reset it was a different start up (i had horrendous problems with my firmware before even though id sorted the space problem out on c drive it kept sticking and doing strange things, wifi dropping and spotify not downloading) after nokia have sorted it for me the software is fast, stable and ive had no problems at all despite playing around with it all afternoon .... the screen is superb also ..... question is im on 3 uk who drag their **bleep** in authorising release however do my local repair centre have a different firmware than is on the updater ??? i thought that the firmware had been upgraded as it was fast and stable and didnt check until just now the firmware is the same 20.0.019 im confused i know how to update the firmware and also know all the tweaks but i couldnt get it as stable ..... also the chap said to make sure i bring the phone in when 3 release the firmware and let them update it ......
if you want a superb repair centre go to car phone warehouse near the trafford centre .... (not the ones inside)

If Nokia will not touch it then i would send it back to Expansys for a replacement, if you only had it 3 days before going faulty i would demand a replacement. This is a prime example of you get what you pay for, too many people are shopping all over the world, demanding cheeper prices from box shifters like Expansys. When things go wrong nobody wants to know.
    Good luck

  • Nokia repairs.

    Hi all,
The best way to get my Nokia E71 repaired?I bought my E71 in April from Play.Com,but unfortunately I've dropped it,and now the screen is blank, everything else seems to be working and I've did a backup.I took the phone to the Carphone Warehouse in Ayr,Scotland, which is supposed to be a Nokia Repair Centre, with the phone and all the paperwork which I got from Play.com,but yhey said I needed a receipt with the serial number which I don't have.I only have the transaction details. Can I send the phone to Nokia, and if so,how do I go about it,or should Icontact Play.Com and see if they'll send me an actual receipt?Any replies will be appreciated.
    Regards,
    sevsam.

    Hi Sevsam,
Yes it's the standard operating procedure for Nokia Care to ask for the official receipt that states the unit's serial number. This is mainly due to their policy that the warranty is only good for the first owner. I'm not too sure how Play.com processes transactions, but they would be your best bet in attaining an official receipt. Double check your transaction documents with them for any sign of the IMEI Number. That woud be the Serial Number Nokia Care needs. Also, make sure you didn't have it openned by "third party service" otherwise, it voids your warranty and yes they will charge you for parts and labour.
I'm a bit worried about the drop. Nokia Care might argue that the damage was brought about by "misuse" and charge you for it anyway. On the bright side, I just had my e63 repaired for not wanting to turn on. Nokia said it was an LCD problem and replaced it free of charge. In hindsight, I think I may have dropped the phone once or twice.

  • Is the Nokia Repair Centre really this bad???

Well it's a sad day for me, earlier this year due to a weak design of the 1520 my digitizer cracked. So I finally scraped the £125 required to replace the screen as it's calassed as an out of warranty repair and sent my phone off for repair and that was just the start of the problems.
So paid the money for a cosmetic out of warranty repair but then no communication on when the phone would be collected or even any communication to acknowledge payment except the money service WorldPay who the transaction went though.
After numerous calls to Anovo and Microsoft being shoved from pillar to post a nice lady at MS sorted out the collection on behalf of Anovo.
After a week or so I suddenly had an email from WorldPay saying I had had a part refund but without any explanation.
I then a few days later received an email from the Nokia Repair Centre but it had no content apart from a failed download message.
I then checked my phone via the Nokia Technical Support site to discover the phone was now being returned to me, good news or so I thought.
And today the phone arrived!!!! and it has not been repaired, no explanation as to why not and right from the start no way to actually contact the repair team to even ask them what they are playing at and why the phone was not repaired.
I am disgusted with the way I have been treated and while I had most of my money returned it has still cost me £12.83 to basically send my phone on a nice little holiday.
Lets hope this is a one off and not the normal experience customers will receive.
I have been a Windows Mobile MVP and fan since 2002 and now a Windows Phone technical supporter on forums and MS ExpertZone since it's launch and never experienced such a poor quality of service until now. I really hope this is not the future of things to come.

Sorry to learn about your experience, awarner. Given your current situation, we recommend contacting your local support team and inquire about the repair history of your phone: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/mobile/contact/.
Keep us posted with the outcome.

  • Nokia 5610 with dead(?) screen

Hey guys I seem to have a problem!
I was uploading some mp3 to my newly bought Nokia 5610,
I got it 3 weeks ago. I installed the latest software etc etc. Now here we go: I was uploading the mp3's and at some point I had to go to college, and I thought it be alright if I just left my phone on the desk so it could upload the songs while I was gone, and it'd be done by the time I would get back.
Then I thought that maby the battery would be empty soon if it was uploading all the time, so I got my charger, and I plugged it in the mobile... and then suddenly the screen went black. I was like... euh? O.o what was that.
So I start looking at what could be wrong (no i didnt open the device exept of taking out the SIM card and battery and back in again so my warrenty is still intact) Its pretty weird, the screen is black, but when I put it 'on' it vibrates 1 time as normal, I see black letters "Nokia" apear on a dark grey screen. And then nothing happends. The only thing noticable is that the screen goes from total black to dark grey for 2 seconds, it does this 3 times and then it stays black. And then I can push 'on' again and the exact same happends again.
So I thought, maby the battery went dead? I put in the charger again, and this time it kept on going from black to grey untill I unplug the charger. Also when I connect the USB to my computer, the pc finds the 'new device' and then immediatly it disconnects again. This happends everytime the 'cycle' starts again (going black to grey 3 times and then black). So it seems like it is going On, and then after the screen goes black for the last time it is turned Off again.
Its the only thing I see, nothing apears on the screen exept "nokia' (in a weird place aswell, at the middle-bottom instead of the middle where it normally apears).
I'm bashed... I bought this mobile 3 weeks ago, never dropped it or anything. Nothing seems to be damaged either, from the outside at least.
It was all fine untill this morning. Now im not sure wether it was because of uploading the mp3's, or because I plugged in the charger, or combination of either.
Again its about the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music, Has anyone encountered this problem or has suggestions? Else I'm afraid I will just have to get it back to a repair center in Amsterdam (after I told al my friends my new number and said that they could delete my old 1 :/)
    Any help is appreaciated!

Well mate, the only experience i have with this phone (I have the same as yours) is that you should bring it back to a nokia care centre (for locations see posts above) and tell them what the problem is, then they should update/flash the software. In the worst case they will send it to external repairs, which will cost a few weeks (2-4). That is what is happening to my mobile as I'm typing...
Just ask them if they cant do it right in the store, they should be able to. Try to avoid that it is send to external repair as that will cost alot of time. It will help you to understand if you read the a/discussions/board/message?board.id=phones&message.id=34235

  • Nokia booklet is dead

Hi, I do know, there is a small partition , and a big one with windows on the netbook. The small one seems to hold stuff need it to start. My son installed Ubuntu 10.10 with pausdlbo drivers, but took th total disk.....now it is dead.  What to do I do need any help Thank you all.........

    Hi greasergirl,
Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions,
How unfortunate that your Nokia booklet has stopped working. The best option if the Booklet is not responding is to restore the Nokia booklet to it's factory settings.
This can simply be done by pressing F8.
You need to press F8 before the operating system logo appears.
In the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to select Advanced Boot
    Options > Repair your Computer.
On the second screen choosing “ImageX recovery utility” should reset the system to factory defaults. Be sure to plug the Booklet 3G in.
The entire process should take less than 30 minutes
    Hope this helps,
    John_Tesla

Hi, cacciuc. How's your phone? Can you confirm if you are using the cable that came with the phone? Do you have a computer that you can use to connect your phone instead of using the tablet? What happen when you try connecting it t a wall charger? Did you happen to see any indicator that it is charging? Make sure to use the charger that came with the phone. You can also try pressing and holding the volume down and the power button at the same time for 10-15 seconds. The phone will restart and it will refresh the phone settings. Hope this helps. Let us know the outcome.

  • Nokia N95 Crashed,Dead

I have tried to update my Nokia N95 software and accidentally
unplug my USB cable. I lost everything on it id dead (Crashed)
I took it to Nokoa service (Australia) but they couldn't help me
as I purchased my N95 in Hong Kong It is not under warranty I offer to in cash, they told me to send it back to HK to get it fixed. Is NOKIA No.1 my understanding is they should be able to fix it anywhere in the World their product (N95) Can anyone help me please

I personally have had trouble with a Nokia Care Centre in Australia. I believe from what I have been told that the ncc's in Australia have no connection with Nokia. They are privately owned and operated service centre's and service Nokia phones on behalf of Nokia Australia. As you purchased your phone in HK it is probably outside of their scope to repair it. I would suggest that you telephone the Nokia Australia call centre (phone number in white pages phone book) and seek their guiedance.

  • N96 and Nokia Repair in USA

My Nokia N96-3 crashed a few days back while updating the firmware using NSU. I tried reviving it using the instruction posted here, unfortunately nothing worked. After contacting Nokia care couple of times for repair options.  I was directed to the Nokia website again to fill the paperwork for repair request to a Nokia service center in Huntsville AL. The website didn't work to send the request was down the first day but I was able to input the IMEI for my phone and print out the paperwork finally the following day. The instructions say to not send accessories/enhancements with the phone unless the problem is because of the accessory. I shipped just my phone to PALCO/NOKIA service center with its backcover and without the accessories like battery, simcard, memorycard. The turn around for the repair time was amazing. It took PALCO just oneday to fix the firmware and my phone was shipped back to me. I received the package yesterday only to find the phone's battery (back cover) cover was missing. I am ok with it too and sent another request and also called Nokia care abou the missing part. On both occasions (over the phone/email) I was told that I should not send an accessory with the phone. I was just surprised to hear that battery cover (back cover) is considered a accessory and not phone part. Anyway, long story short if you are sending your phone for service don't send you phone's back cover with it. PALCO will not send it back to you.

Funnily enough I have about three spare N95 battery covers because they told me to keep mine, yet they sent me a new one with the refurbed phone anyway. So I guess they're not consistent about it. Anyway, the rule of thumb should be "if you can take it off the phone, keep it".

  • Does my warranty cover the repair of dead pixels?

    Hi everyone!
First time posting on these discussion boards and have a question regarding my MBP. I purchased this retina display 15 inch macbook pro last year in October and pretty much fell in love with it. This is my first time buying a mac product having previously been a windows user. I started noticing that a few of the pixels have died, showing no colour, standing out in white. It began with just one but now I have 5 small clusters showing quite noticeably. I do know that it came with a warranty and it's not even been a year yet, can I return this for repair? Any help would be appreciated!
    Krishna

One:  Buy AppleCare for your system before the one year mark.  That extends the 1 year warranty to 3 and extends phone support to 3 years as well.  But the "one year from purchase" deadline is rarely waived.
Two: Go to the Genius Bar and ask them.  We are just users like you, and anything we say does not guarantee what Genius Bar will do.  I have heard from other posters that apple has a minimum number dead pixels that are just considered "acceptable", but then my memory is even older than I am.
    Good luck.

  • Nokia N8 is dead!

    Hi,
My Nokia N8 is suddenly dead. It just doesnt start.
    Any help is appreciated!!!
    Thanks,
    P.

    @PAVAND
Whilst you have got to expect the worst and loss of all data about all that you can do is:-
    1) Try keeping power button depressed for 8 seconds until (hopefully) 3 vibrations felt and then re-start normally.
    2) Try three button depressed power on "hard reset" remembering to release power button only after 1st vibration and other three after Nokia "Shaking hands" logo appears.
    3) Return device under warranty if applicable.
