Not checking filesystems at startup by default

Not sure if this is really the right place to discuss this but...here goes...
I had some troubles with one of my harddrives and while troubleshooting I noticed that in fstab, fsck isn't performed on any partition at all... Which got me wondering if that is really sane? Isn't it a bit risky not to do a fsck every bootup? Yes, it speeds up booting quite alot but is it really worth it? Anyone got any opinions?

According to the fstab man page, it's appropriate to set safe dump/pass parameters on each partition to check filesystem integrity.
The sixth field, (fs_passno), is used by the fsck(8) program to  determine the order in which filesystem checks are done at reboot time.  The root filesystem should be specified with a fs_passno of  1,  and  other filesystems  should  have a fs_passno of 2.  Filesystems within a drive        will be checked sequentially, but filesystems on different drives  will be  checked  at  the  same time to utilize parallelism available in the  hardware.  If the sixth field is not present or zero, a value  of  zero is  returned  and fsck will assume that the filesystem does not need to be checked.
/dev/hdaX / reiserfs defaults 0 1
/dev/hdaY /home resierfs defaults 0 2
/dev/hdaZ /var resierfs defaults 0 2
Adjusting your /etc/fstab to something similar will ensure that your file system is checked on boot. In terms of start-up time, it doesn't really take that much longer with ReiserFS (Depending on the size of your partition) and it provides you with "piece-of-mind".

Why don't the options to not check if Firefox is the default browser, set the homepage to a blank page, and password settings hold? It opens to a firefox page and asks if I want to make firefox the default and has the checkbox checked to check for default with every launching.
Just updated to Firefox ESR 24.6.0

This article lists a number of possible reasons that Firefox might be unable to save your preference changes during your session, or that they might be overridden at startup: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
Another common issue is a feature of security or utility software that protects you from unwanted browser settings changes by reverting them back to an earlier state. For example, Advanced SystemCare's Surfing Protection feature can do this. You may need to turn off such features, if you have them, in order to keep your changes.

  • XP Errors on Startup (Checking Filesystem lags startup) (FAT32)

Bootcamp 2.1 Windows XP Service Pack 2
Windows runs fine, boots fine. Usually..
When I switch from 10.5 over to XP before it boots into XP it gives me an error screen saying it has to check my File System. Every time.
    "Checking File System on C:
Type of File System is FAT32
    One of your disks...." etc
Press any key within 9 seconds to skip...
Problem is, won't respond to any keys (Macbook), and hence won't let me skip that screen. Then goes into % checking the filesystem, starts around 18%, speeds up then lags at about 70% then slowly to 100%, lags again, then will startup. Around 15 minutes later.
How do I force the skip?
Better yet is there anyway to never have it check the filesystem?
If the partition was less than 30Gb would this check take less time?
Like I said, once I'm in Windows XP, it runs fine, just takes forever to switch back and forth (going from Mac-Windows anyway). Should I be using Startup Disk in Sys Prefs or is there another way (using Option on Startup?)
    Thanks

  • How do I make iTunes NOT check if it is the default player via registry setting?

I work in an a corporate environment with hundreds of employees that have iTunes and when iTunes is the default music player it conflicts with our Voicemail system (the voicemail system will email .wav files to people when a voicemail was left.  Double clicking the .wav file from within our email client doesn't work when iTunes is the default music player).
Is there a registry setting to DISABLE iTunes from checking to see if it is the default music player?
Is there also a registry setting to set WMP as the default music player for .wav files for those people that have already set iTunes as the default music player?
    Thank you.

  • OSX 10.6 .8 -- Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options. Don't know where else to look.

How do I keep Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (OSX 10.6 .8 -- MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options.

    Hi fullrun-
Once Firefox is open, you should be able to open the Right click context menu on the icon. From there you select 'Options' and then de-select 'Open at Login'. Hope that helps.

  • Checking Filesystem: Could not open -a

    Hi,
I just noticed a problem during the filesystem check at boot time, a message like the following floats by (are the initscript messages logged somewhere?):
    ::Checking Filesystems
    Could not open -a
    /dev/sda2: clean ....
    Could not open -a
Then the boot continues. I tracked it down to the fsck in /etc/rc.sysinit, line 263.
    The scenery is:
    kernel26 2.6.34-2
    initscripts 2010.06-2
    /dev/sda2 is my /boot partition
my root partition is on /dev/sda4 and is a btrfs one
/home is a subvol of the btrfs partition but of course has its own entry in /etc/fstab
I do have another partition using LVM, but that is currently not used (and not in fstab)
    Has anybody else seen this?
Could the btrfs stuff be a problem?

I recently went back to ext3 (dropping all btrfs partitions) for various reasons, which also solved this problem.

  • Checkbox not checked by default

    Hello,
I don't know if it is a anomaly but when a put a checkbox in a popup iView with default value true == 1, the checkbox is not checked.
When I put a checkbox with the same default value in my main iView, the checkbox is checked.
    Version : VC 7.00 SP9 patch 2
    Is there a bug ?
    Best regards.
    Francois

    Hello Ankur,
I have installed SP10 for VC 7.00 and I have same thing : Checkbox don't work.
    Can you test this ?
    1. In my popup iView, I call a web service and the result is a form. In this form, I add manually a checkbox (<a href="http://fng.homelinux.org/copper/albums/userpics/10002/screenshot1.png">screen shot 1</a>)
    2. In the properties window of my checbox, I put <b>true</b> as default value. (<a href="http://fng.homelinux.org/copper/albums/userpics/10002/screenshot2.png">screen shot 2</a>)
    3. After compilation, my checkbox is not checked by default. (<a href="http://fng.homelinux.org/copper/albums/userpics/10002/screenshot3.png">screen shot 3</a>)
It <b>works</b> only if I don't call the web service before the form.
    Best regards
    Francois

  • Checking for file conflicts: could not get filesystem information

When I try to install a new package with pacman 4 I got the following warning just after pacman has done "checking for file conflicts":
warning: could not get filesystem information for /var/lib/ntp/etc/resolv.conf (deleted): No such file or directory
After the warning message is printed, the installation continues normally.  This warning message has never shown up before.
I have ntpd running in a chroot as a non-root user (instructions).
I am wondering if anyone else gets the same warning message and if this 'problem' can be solved.
I forgot to say: the file is still there according to ls and is not empty, but the contents differs form the /etc/resolv.conf-file.
    tim@tim-notebook:~$ cat /var/lib/ntp/etc/resolv.conf && echo && cat /etc/resolv.conf

I'm not sure how to do that or I do not know exactly what you mean.
    tim@tim-notebook:~$ pkgfile -gs "*etc/resolv.conf"
    core/filesystem
    extra/archboot
But you probably already knew that.
Running pacman with the --debug option did not gave me any more clues.  All I know now, is that this message is printed when the moundpoints are examined:
    stderr 'pacman -Syu--debug' output wrote:(...)
    debug: checking possible conflict: /var/lib/
debug: file is a directory, not a conflict

  • Users not able to see all the default reports in FDM under analysis

    All,
Users in FDM are not able to see all the default reports which will be available under Analysis. I have checked the MenuNavigation and MenuNavigationItems under object maintainence in FDM which have "ALL" as the provisioning level. I am not sure where the issue is as the users still not able to see the reports. Please advise if there is something that can be done in workbench.
    Regards

You can set security on Report folders in workbench.  You would go to the report tab in workbench, and right click on a Folder (Cannot do it on the individual report, it has to be on the folder), and you can assign security levels to the report folder.  There are some in here that default to the admin level but you can override it.

  • ERROR: NO_GUEST: Guest login not allowed from client startup

we are getting the following error with express 6.3.4 when connectting to the express server from Objects using a connection editor.
    The error message is
Error #12150 in XPCUBE: Non-fatal (0300): Data Manager is unable to generate transmission.
Error #10300 in XDMRESP: Non-fatal (0300): ERROR: NO_GUEST: Guest login not allowed from client startup
Encountered similar error while calling from OLAP web application.
In stored procedure XWD_RAMSTARTUP: The following Express
Server error occurred: NO_GUEST: Guest login not allowed from
    client startup
Which I believe is the same reason.
Can you pls suggest what could be the problem and how can we over come this.

In the Connection Editor, under "Relational Data-> Settings" did you check the "Personal Configuration" box?
If you did, you should ensure the Authentication type is not set to "None".

  • Java not checking current directory

I'm trying to run one of my classes in command line. First time I've done this, usually use JBuilder, but I need to send command line arguments for this assignment, which is easier to do in command line.
I'm using Windows XP. My class is called Fexpand. I go to the directory that the class is in. I check this with dir, and Fexpand.class is clearly present. I type "java Fexpand" and hit enter. I get "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Fexpand" If I put the full path to the current directory in manually with -classpath it will run just fine. But everything I've checked says this shouldn't be necessary and it should be checking the current directory automatically.
Now javac works just fine. Just for kicks I thought I'd see if compiling with javac would make any difference. Went to my source directory (because JBuilder keeps compiled classes separate from source), typed "javac Fexpand.java" and it worked just fine. And since there was now an Fexpand.class in this directory, too, I thought I'd try running it. "java Fexpand" Still get the same error.
My CLASSPATH variable contains the following (including quotes, I didn't add those for clarity, they're in the value for CLASSPATH): "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\lib\ext\QTJava.zip"
I have no idea whether or not this is right, but it's the only culprit I can think of.
    Thanks for any help.

But everything I've checked says this shouldn't be necessary and it should be checking the current directory automatically. Not if you hava overridden the default checking by explicitly specifying a classpath. Read the documentation Setting the Classpath and How Classes are Found here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/tools.html

  • Why is my HD not shown as a startup disk?

My macbook pro died on me, since it has stopped going into safe sleep (hibernate). Only this time I couldnt start it up again, it only gave me the question mark. When I start up from the CD and check the drive with Disk Utility everything is ok. But when I want to set my HD as startup disk I can not see it anywhere. I have run all the checks possible with Disk utility but still it does not show as a startup disk. It doesnt show either on desktop, but maybe thats normal in CD-mode. I would rather not have to reformat the drive if there is a way to get around this.

    So to verify...
You ran "Repair Disk" and "Repair Permissions" from the install DVD's Disk Utilities?
If so I assume no troubles found?
What was the drives S.M.A.R.T. status? This could be found in Disk Utilities First Aid.
Try booting into the Startup Manager by pressing and holding the option key during boot. This will launch the graphical Startup Manager where you can select the drive you wish to boot from. This is if your drive shows up, which would be the norm.
If that does not work then you can also try booting while holding the X-key.
If these do not work then you probably have drive that is dying on ya. Yeah you could format and rebuild or even do an Archive and install which may work for ya, but be prepared to replace the drive.
