Not putting SYS password in a backup script
I have a small database to backup and I plan to use a simple unix script to do it. For example,
expdp system full=y content=all dumpfile=$dfile 2>&1 | tee $efile
mv $dfile .
bzip2 -9 $dfile $efile
# Copy files to remote server
scp -pq ${dfile}.bz2 ${efile}.bz2 $scpremotepath || (echo Backup - scp copy of backup files failed ; exit 1)
I want to add the script to cron job so that it can run automatically.
A question I have is how can I avoid putting the database password in the script? Is it possible to put the password in an Oralce "wallet" ?
Thanks.
Nobody is suggesting you are doing wrong. You asked for a way to avoid writing a password for the user at the shell script, and you were suggested to use OS authentication.
Now I understand you want an evaluation of the way you perform the backup. It is important to have a backup and you should assess if this backup meets the recoverability goals of your company. A logical backup, such as exp or expdp will allow you to recover data up to the time the backup was performed, but you won't be able to recover beyond that point, does it work for your company? Otherwise, if you are concerned about a mechanism to recover data up to the time of failure, then you should consider a physical backup with a database configured in archivelog mode, that is what recovery manager is for.
IMO not knowing how to use recovery manager doesn't justify not using it, you should go to the backup and recover manual and learn about it. Since you mentioned you are using expdp I assume you are currently working with a 10g database, you can enter the Enterprise Manager Control and schedule a backup procedure from it. It can schedule a recovery manager managed backup for you, meanwhile you can start learning how to manually use recovery manager.
You can start here --> Oracle® Database Backup and Recovery Basics

please. waiting for your replies.
You should have set up a password. It is important to have one in order to prevent other users from installing applications and to make your Mac safer.
If you have set up your Apple ID, you can try resetting your user password with your Apple ID > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
If it does not work, reset your user password through Recovery > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101 Then, set up a different Keychain password > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1631 -
Someone stole my iPod and put a password on it, not I got it back and cant get into it
I bought an iPod from a friend of mine. I did not put a password on it because I didn't think I needed one and I had only had the iPod for about a week. Then someone stole the iPod. It was gone for about 2 months and then someone returned it to me and said they had "found" it at there house. But now it has a password on it and I don't know what it is so I cant even unlock my own iPod. I didn't have it for long before it was stolen so it wasn't even synced to my iTunes yet. Is there anything I can do to get into my iPod so I can use it again?
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

For how to restore:
iTunes: Restoring iOS software
To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
If it was a 5G iPod with iOS 7 then you will also have to ent4r the Apple ID and password last used in Settings>iCloud.

HOW TO RESET SYS PASSWORD after rename of db
Thanks for taking my quesiton!
I renamed my database. Everything is working fine except I can not change sys password. If I try I get: ORA-28003 : password verified for the specified password failed.
I can change system's password. I can log on just fine as SYSI think my pwdsid.ora password file may be the problem.

Thanks, KathieHello Kathie,

Have you set some specific password rules? Is the function VERIFY_FUNCTION available for all and is it valid?
Did you try to change the password for user sys with user sys?
Try it with some different user which have the rights for that... (for example sys) only for testing...
@Anantha:
You are right... but please have a look at here ( Fun with password verification):

I put a password for my backup months ago and now I don't remember it. I rectently went on vacaction and my iPhone was backed up to iCould. While I was on vcation i started to get notifcations saying that there was no more space in cloud. I kept on ignoring it. Now I want to back it up to my mom's mac, and I need the password, but I don't know the password. Please help me out. Thank You. Sincerely, Saad Jaber.
If you don't know the password then you cannot use the backup. That is the point of the passcode.

Hey guys,
I just bought a new iPhone but i can't restore my backup files beacuse it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I really don't know where to put the password to restore it. I really have some files that are meaningful for me so I really need help. Any suggestions anyone?Select your iDevice in the iTunes.
Choose the Summary screen (tab) and scroll to the bottom of the screen.
Then un-select Encrypt iPhone backup.
iTunes will then prompt you to “Enter the password to unlock your iPhone backup”, enter the password you set originally. -
I had to restore an iPhone 3GS, but the backup has a password that i did not put. What should i do?
If you have a corporate Exchange account set up on the phone, the administrators can requre encrypted backups. Try the password for your Exchange account.

I have just got the new 4s today, and plugged my old iphone 4 into my friends comp, for the first time, backed up my iphone,
then when i went to restore my new iphone 4s from the backup of my old phone, it said enter password, and when i looked the encrypt with password was ticked and it said to enter my password, but i have never put a password in, and never backed up my phone before,
how can i change the password if i never put one in, in the first place.
kimmy,. xIf you can't get the password correct, you CANNOT restore from that backup.
However, if you've been using your phone as recommended by Apple, there should be minimal data loss.
Your iTunes library is on your computer, so you can synch all your apps, music, movies, ringtones, etc, on to your new phone.
Similarly, contacts should be synched to Address Book, Outlook, or a cloud service for you to easily synch back to your new phone.
Pictures taken from your old phone and not synched to your computer are lost, but you would have been synching those photos to your computer frequently as recommended. Other photos that you synch TO your iPhone are still on your computer.
You won't be able to get text messages back. -
Ok I want to update my phone but I try to put my password and it say it's not it but it is it, what can I do to fix it
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are using a new computer, your phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Devices in itunes.
2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book & iCal or Outlook, Windows Address Book) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, DO NOT SYNC at this point.
4. Store>Authorize this computer.
5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
7. Right click again and select backup.
8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go. -
What passwords do i put for my encrypt iPhone backup?
My friends recently locked my phone to where it say "iphone is disabled" can someone help me with what passwords i use "encrpyt iPhone backup"? i put a password && it says you must neeed to type your phone passcode & it doesnt give me a slot to type my passcode in.. & i really need to change my passcode or atleast get into my phone!
No messages are apprearing in the left side bar, also when I type a contact nothing appears. When I try to send a msg, it tells me an account is not logged in, so I ensure it is, but oddly enough my me.com account is the first to appear and I haven't used that in years. Not only that, I removed it from msgs on the Mac altogether. So strange! Thanks for your help!!

I bought an iPhone 4 from a youngster who had put his own Apple ID on it but could not remember the password. I backed it up yesterday and restored to my new iPhone and it copied the Apple ID across too. Now I have 2 phones with it on. Anything I do?
that must be really annoying !!
so this is what you call
FIND MY IPHONE ACTIVATION LOCK Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support
when you start using iCloud on any iOS device and enable find my iPhone, this prevents a new user from using it, and also prevents anyone from using the phone
as it is locked to previous owners account ,this is also the case if when a phone is lost or stolen.
the only way around this is to have the previous owner reset their apple id by going to @ applied.apple.com
if they are unable to do this, then the only other way around this is to have the previous owner get a copy of their original receipt and call apple support who can then lift this lock if they get a copy of the receipt
unfortunately there is no quick fix -> the below link explains what you should do before you sell or give away an iPhone
