NSS 322 bricked

I obtained the NSS 322 unit today and attempted to update from the 1.0.0.0 firmware to the newer 1.3.0.5
After waiting for about an hour for it to restart, I connected a monitor to the VGA output to discover that it won't boot due to missing files.
How can I restore the boot file system to the device?
thanks
Peter

One of the great things about the NSS devices is that they are almost impossible to kill. (Not to say you can't kill them)
If you end up in this situation, you can do the following to restore the DOM
Call support and ask for a DOM image
Remove ALL HDDs from unit
Connect an external USB CD/DVD
Using a Linux live distrobution boot the NSS
Once the OS is loaded connect your USB stick with the DOM image
Mount the DOM from within the OS -- typically it comes in as an USB device like /dev/sdbTo find the mount points run 'mount' from a terminal window
Next, from a terminal window copy your good DOM image to the DOM device using 'dd' like this:~# dd if=/media/usb/my_stick/goodDOM.img of=/dev/sdb bs=512b
Once complete, reboot to into your nss.

  • Cisco NSS 322 not staying connected to Active Directory.

    Hello,
We recently deployed a NSS 322 in our office, and connected it to our windows 2003 domain controller (running as a VM).  It seems every morning that i need to log into the NSS 322 and reconnect to the active directory (Network Services -> Microsoft Networking).  After i do this, everyone is able to connect to the shares on the NSS 322.
Just to add, we do not have any issues during the day with the active directory authentication, it seems to only occur over night when no one is using the shares.
Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening, or any solutions to resolve or minimize its occurrence.
    Cheers,
    Walter.

    Hi,
Please maske sure you are running on the latest firmware 1.3.0.5 .(always make sure data is backed up)
Make sure write cache is disabled.(since it's VM)
Make sure the NSS time is pointed back to your PDC
We have a couple VM running 08 Server; hadn't run into any issues.
If this doesn't fix your issue, please call in for support 1-866-606-1866

  • NSS 322 not accessible on my network, only Tonky ...?

    Hello experts,
I have just installed my new NSS 322. (Great! Just bought it and just discovered Cisco is dropping it - so much for rewarding shareholder loyalty). Anyway, I expected to see NSS 322 (set to Raid 1) on my network (as per the NSLU2). But it's not there. I can access the NSS 322 using the webserver without problem. I am using windows (7 and XP) on my network. I presume I have not set it up correctly (although the workgroup name is correct - it's just that there's nothing I can copy the files to).
Could anyone out there help a damsel in distress, please?
    Thank you.
    Nicola

    Regan,
I'm happy to hear that the issue was resolved. Cisco will continue to provide support for one year from the date of purchase as usual through the Small Business Support Center. The hardware warranty will be honored for five years from the date of purchase as well.
The NSS300 devices are manufactured by QNAP. QNAP will continue to update the firmware and provide support for Cisco customers that convert to the QNAP firmware. QNAP is constantly adding features to these devices and works very hard to make noticeable improvements to the functionality. You can find more information about the transition process at the following page: http://www.qnap.com/cisco.asp Note: It is not possible to revert back to the Cisco firmware once the QNAP firmware has been loaded.
My understanding is that QNAP provides excellent support and they also have a well established community forum which makes it very easy to find answers quickly.

  • Is it possible to install Microsoft Storage Server on Cisco NSS 322?

As the NSS 322 doesn't seem to support Microsoft Offline files (I've been told by Cisco support that this is a "common problem" with network-attached storage devices, but I've got offline files working OK with a basic linux box, so I don't believe this to be true), can we install a copy of MS Storage Server 2008 on it instead? Anyone have any experience with this?

I spoke with several Cisco Reps who directed me to purchase these products:
1x Small Business Network Storage Server NSS322
2x Small Business Router SMB|RV042 4PORT RT (one for our two person office on the East Coast & one for our Rep on the West Coast)
I was told this is what I needed to buy from Cisco to run:
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008
    Quick Books Enterprise
    Can you tell me if:
    1. I am suppose to install SBS2008 via a portable DVD drive on the NSS322, or if I have to work around this as outlined here:
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/datacenter/two-ways-to-circumvent-the-dvd-drive-requirement-for-installing-windows-server-2008/324
    2. If I have been misguided in my purchase & SBS2008 can not be run from the server I purchased from Cisco?
3.If I have not purchased the correct item from Cisco, which item should I purchase to run SBS2008 & QuickBooks?
I can not get in touch with a Cisco Rep at this moment b.c. of a technical issue... yikes!
Please advise, as I have little time to start setting up.

  • Unable to login cisco NSS 322

    Hi,
We recently installed the smart storage nss322 and update the firmware to latest version (NSS322_FW_1.4.0.7).
Was configured with static IP network adress, network load balancing (with the second NIC), SSL access, was joined to domain, connected to AD for user access control to folders and only the sharing service was active, the rest is disabled (web, ftp, etc), basically because we use it to backup the network data. The rest of options have the default basic configuration. The Storage is operating and we can access to it from the network, write, read and delete files. The IP is alive and we can pinging without problems.
Suddenly, we cannot login into storage using web browser secure port.
When enter to the login screen, and insert user and password for the administrator user, the storage always ask to change the password (with any user from NAS or AD).
    Username:
    Password:
    Application:
    Administration
    Language:
    EnglishDeutschEspañolFrançaisItaliano日本語
    SSL login
    LOGIN
In the change password screen, we filled all the fields:
    Change Password
To change your password, please fill out the form below:
    Old Password
    New Password
    Verify New Password
and no matter the password that we write, we always receive the next message:
    Update failed
Click "Go Back" to go back to the change password page.
And we cannot enter to administration panel.
    So someone can help us?
Regards for all that want help us.

    Patrico,
I like to add more details into this area. You can do as jason recommended to recovery the local administration password. However, there are two screen I can described as follow:
    1. NSS Login screen: The NSS GUI only allowed the local account with admistration privilege to access and manage NAS's GUI. AD or NIS administration privilege is not as same as the local account. These account are not allowed to access the NSS GUI.  There are two conditions that user will observed with login.
    a. Invalid user account (username is no match with database): there is no account under that username in the database for local account, AD domain, or NIS domain. The GUI screen will give user the error message (red text above the username field)
    b. Valid user account: any user account with administration privilege for local account can access to the NAS GUI. Any user account came from AD and NIS domain, included administration privilege in the domain, will redirected to the changed password screen.
    2. Screen to change to a new password:
    - This screen only changed the password for local user. The concept is for any user who access to the share/folder with their own password.
    - Any user account imported from AD or NIS server will failed to change to new password due to another level of security at the main AD or NIS server. In this case, it required the IT person to change the password at the server location.
Bottom line, the screen to change to a new password is intended for local user who wanted a new password for access folders/shares via FTP, Samba, NFS for that user account.
    Hope that helps!
    Thanks,
    -Clint

  • NSS 322 Mozy

    Hello,
Installed one of these for a client with the intention of using the integrated Mozy for offsite backup.  The initial setup went fine, we're a Mozy reseller so had setup an account for the device.  Scheduled backups ran fine for about a week at which point it started acting really flaky.  The shares we had selected for backup were no longer available on the Mozy screen, logging into the Mozy portal to do a restore showed some falls, but not all and files in vault eventually disappeared completely.  Ended up removing the Mozy account so we could try to re-configure, but now when we try and access the Mozy portion of the device manager, we get a message that says invalid license key and it goes no further.  This message is correct, we deleted the account with Mozy, but how do we get in to reset and try setting it up again?  Rebooted the device with no change, it just sits there after the invalid license message apears and says loading data.

    Support,
There is no easy way to accomplish this! But if you do a 10 second reset on the unit, this will erase the configuration file only. If you have a backup configuration before installing mozy settings, you can reload the configuration back into the box and will be running shortly. If you don't have a saved config before mozy you can just manually configure the unit. You would make sure you have screen shots of all shares, users, and any other important information.  Shares are the most critical. After the ten second reset it will look as if all data has been deleted, this is just because the share name was wiped out on the reset. All you need to do is create new share - the share name has to be exact (MyShare). Then you will notice after the share is created data will show. Now manually place all other information back into NSS.
(10 second reset will delete configuration and should not mess with the Volume)
You can give Cisco Small Business Support Center a call and open a case-- if you don’t want to go this route I will be checking on an alternate solution if possible. 1-866-606-1866
For diaster recovery always make sure you have crital data backup to another storage device in case of failure or possible corruption.

  • How to make and schedule backup tasks for MySQL Databases

Has NSS 322 this functionality? If not, are there any packages to do dat? I can´t see the folders that contain MySQL Databases, so I can´t backup them.
Many thanks in advance for your support.

All of the MySQL databases are visable within the phpMyAdmin application.  phpMyAdmin can export, import, manage the databases directly.
To use the remote replication feature from the GUI, you need the databases visible in a share.  I'm sure that is possible through the CLI, but I'm not able to tell you how to do it.  Maybe someone else on the forum can help provide a solution.
You can also use the rsync command in the CLI directly.
Did you find any ideas on the phpMyAdmin website?  This must be a common task that someone has worked out a solution for.

    Hello darkhawk,
Thank you for the recommendation.  I somewhat understand what a MS DOS disk is, but I'm not sure how to go about creating one. I've seen where you can use a program, like Rufus, to create a usb one  - but I'm leery about using 3rd-party programs (especially ones I'm not familiar with). I've come across a couple of 'how-to' tuts, but they didn't clarify what files (if any) I would need to include on the disk (for my particular situation). Right now I don't have any blank cds, nor any extra flash/thumb drives - wish I did, but hadn't needed these for years. There has only been one other time where I needed to re-install Windows, but that was over 15 years ago - I did it through BIOS, reformatting my drives, and then reinstalled via the Windows XP disk. Windows 8 is an entirely different breed, which has left me feeling a bit stumped, at times. If there was a way I could perform it (successfully), similar to the first time I did it years ago, I'd give it a try - but at the same time, I'm a bit reluctant, because if it doesn't work, then I'm stuck without any internet access to get further help.
Ask and ye shall receive. This should be doable in Windows 7 and Windows 8 on another PC. I recommend using a USB Flash drive like in this tutorial, but I'm sure you could use something else.
If you want, you could also use Hiren's BootCD to make a bootable CD with many options and programs on it (I keep one, just for certain situations) that will allow you to do the same things.

Also very useful for sorting out virus's as long as it's downloaded and made on another PC that is virus free......

  • Will Apple cover me if updating to iOS5 on ipod Touch 3rd gen ruins/bricks it?

I have heard stories of some people's apple products not working/bricked after attempting to upgrade to iOS5.
I have a 1.5 year old ipod Touch 3rd gen. No warranty on it from Apple (tho I do have one from Square Trade for ADH, but I called them and they said if it is a software issue, they don't cover it.)
I am very concerned about d/ling the ios5 upgrade and it ruining my ipod touch.  In effect, I will take a device that could fetch almost $200 on ebay (which I could then use to upgrade to a Touch 5gen), and turn it into a worthless piece of junk if I upgrade and it ruins it.
Also, I know that they have released 5.0.1 (beta I believe?) for update.   I still read stories on here from people waiting until now (Nov, a month after it was first released when so many people tried to d/l it and had terrible problems), but now are still getting network timed out error msgs, etc.
So is there ANY protection from Apple if their update should screw my ipod touch??
Should I just wait longer for a final, stable version  of ios 5? (like v5.1)  Or just totally skip the iOS 5 upgrade and stay safe with iOS 4?  I don't know that it is really worth the $200 loss risk to upgrade to iOS5.  (i.e. 3rd gen doesn't have the ability to find and lock/wipe my lost touch, etc.)
I do know that I should:
    1) install itunes 10.5 anew on my laptop  (itunes and syncing WAS done on my tower, until I just got it back from being serviced for some Major problems/virues/malware/etc.  I'm not comfortable using it, as the problems on it included not being able to start Local Services, connect to the internet, no audio services, etc.  The guy says it is booting up and services are working now, but you never know....But i digress...)
    2) be on AC and not battery on my laptop
    3) be hardwired (ethernet) to the internet and not use my wireless connection
    4) turn off Windows 7 Firewall, and disable my PC Tools Spyware Docter with Antivirus.
So, what do you all think? should I wait until later to upgrade to say os 5.1?  Should I even RISK upgrading to iOS5 on a touch 3gen and lose almost $200 cash?  And will Apple give me ANY protection should it ruin my touch?  (I seriously doubt it.)
    Thanks for input.

Before proceeding with the update, it wouldn't hurt to manually back up the iPod in iTunes by right->clicking on it from under the Devices section and choosing Backup.    See this article for more information on what is stored in the backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Also make sure that any content you may have synced to the device from iTunes, such as Music, movies, TV Shows, podcasts, etc. are all stored on your computer and in iTunes before updating the iPod's version of iOS.
Otherwise, I would go ahead with the upgrade.  I didn't have any issues with it on my iPhone.

  • My mid-2011 MacBook Air bricks itself after 10.7.2 update

I have a new MacBook Air (11") that was working just great, until today.  Today, I used Software Update to install the updates, which included 10.7.2 as well as the recue partition update.
I did everything you're supposed to do, and when it rebooted, the gray screen comes up, and it shows the spinny doohickey on the bottom showing that it's working.  Then, suddenly, up pops a big "no" icon (the circle with the slash through it) after about 60 seconds.
It simply doesn't do anything after that.
Hard-power-off, wait, power-on, repeat, same thing.
So I reboot with cmd-R to get the rescue partition. It works fine; I ask it to re-install Mac OS X, which then takes about 45 minutes (argh).  Finally, Mac OS X is back, the machine is nicely booted up, all my files are there, everything is good.. But of course, the reinstall took me back to 10.7.1.
All I want to do is upgrade my fricking iPhone to IOS 5.0, but I can't do that without knowing I can sync which requires iCloud which of course requires 10.7.2.  So I *have* to re-do the upgrade.
Back to Software Update, back to installing 10.7.2. And .. 20 minutes later .. back to bricked MacBook Air.
What a waste of my time. What a failure, Apple. I'm very very very very very unhappy that I've wasted so much time just to update my damned iPhone to IOS 5. I'm still without an update. Now I'm trying to figure out how to move my iTunes to another machine -- not nearly as obvious as it should be.  ARGH. I'm going to throw this MacBook Air off the balcony in about 10 minutes. :-(
    Thanks for listening.
      Steve

Wow, you're right -- I can't believe it. I just really can't believe they would screw up so badly, yet when I search for "10.7.2 filevault" I don't find more than a couple of articles about it on the web (including this thread). Why on earth wouldn't Apple have put up some kind of warning about this? I can't believe it, really. It's insane.
On my newly-functional 10.7.2 MBA, I wanted to test your theory and so I turned on filevault 2 and encrypted the main disk again.  It of course wanted me to reboot. So I rebooted. And *blammy* -- same error / boot failure.  Wow.  Also, interestingly, even on a working 10.7.2 system, you can't mount a USB drive that was encrypted using Filevault 2 encryption (in Disk Utility, e.g., as a "Mac OS X, journalled, encrypted" volume that was encrypted with DiskUtility on Lion 10.7.1).  I still have a 10.7.1 machine that I will not upgrade until I can at least decrypt the disk -- but right now, Disk Utility tells me it fails decrypting the external USB disk so I'm hosed!!! ARGH.
Now, going back to the booting problem after upgrade -- for anyone's reference who's still keeping score -- you can easily recover from the booting problem with upgrading a Filevault 2 root drive: Power-cycle the machine and then hold down cmd-r to bring up the Lion Recovery application.  Within Lion Recovery, choose "Disk Utility", and then click on the (as yet unmounted, still encrypted) root hard drive to select it. Then go to the File menu, and choose "Turn off encryption" for this disk.  It then prompts you for the password, and if you enter it, *blammy* you're back up and running again.
In my case, the disk had only just begun encrypting so the action was instant, and then once it confirmed the disk was now decrypted, I simply chose "Restart" from the Apple menu, and I was back in business (no hairy re-installs to deal with).  If this is an already-encrypted volume, presumably it'll take you a bit longer (the normal 45-minutes to 2 hours) to decrypt it.  But at least no more installing software -- it'll "just work".
Maybe I'll go post a simpler version of these instructinos on the other threads, but this is the simplest fix -- just turn off filevault 2 from within Lion Recovery, basically, and that fixes the boot problems.
Apple, if you're listening, you really really really need to say something to your users so they know. Many many many MBA users are likely to have still not upgraded. You can prevent them from hating you and your products by making sure they don't screw the pooch here.  Short version: Mid-2011 MacBook Airs running Filevault 2 WILL NOT BOOT after 10.7.2 update; so users should turn off Filevault2 before upgrading.

  • Send AT commands to Option iCON 322 3G Modem

I have an Option iCON 322 3G Cellular Modem and would like to check out the AT commands with it, but so far I haven't been able to get terminal to connect to the device. A guide says to use |ls -l /dev/tty*| to find my device locations, and here's what it shows for the modem:

So I tried |screen /dev/tty.Icon322| but it just says "Cannot exec '/dev/tty.Icon322': No such file or directory."

  • 3GS freezes on upgrade ipHone 4.0.2 - it's a brick now!

    Hi,
I Have a 3GS on contract from O2 in the UK. Last night I got the note in iTunes to say that 4.0.2 is ready for installing. I was on 4.0.1 and have the lastest iTunes in Win 7 / 32-bit. So I did a sync, and started the upgrade. Unfortunately it stalled at some point and just froze.
So I removed the USB plug and got to the "restore iPhone" point, and clicked on "Restore" in iTunes. That unpacked the already downloaded software, verified with Apple, and started the restore. Unfortunately that gets about 3/4 along the progress bar in iTunes and 1/4 on the iPhone - and stalls.
So I tried a few things:
    - reinstalled iTunes
    - restarted Windows and tried again
    - downloaded jpsw files for 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 (iPhone2,14.0.1_8A306Restore and iPhone2,14.0.2_8A400Restore) and pointed to these when I Shift-Clicked on the restore button. With the 4.0.2 it starts up, but freezes at the same point. With 4.0.1 it says something about being an incorrect version and doesn't attempt an installation.
I can't see anything else to try and my iPhone is a brick - please help!!

Hi again. Panic over. I deleted the ipsw file in %AppData% and started agai - and it seems to have gone well. The phone seems to work again.
