NTSC 24P to HD

I just finish a new documentary that I shot in NTSC 24P (Panasonic DVX-100A) and need to trasfered to HD 1080i/60i. How is this done, are they better machines than others or is a simple computer procedure? I am right now in Buenos Aires, Argentina but could fly anywhere to do it, I have to be delivering the movie January 5th for Sundance.
Any sugestions?

Find a post facility that has FCP and a Kona 3 and an HDCAM or D5 deck and output there. The Kona 3 can upconvert in real time to any format.

  • NTSC 24p conversion for PAL project

    I've got a "conversion" issue I'm wondering if I can get some help with.
    I'm working on a project primarily shot in PAL DV, though there are a handful of tapes shot 24p advanced NTSC. I've already captured all of the footage (everything is at Photo Jpeg resolutions to save drive space. The NTSC 24p footage was captured at 29.97- this is how it appears on the tape). Now I'm wondering the easiest and most efficient way of working with the NTSC and PAL footage together in the same PAL timelines.
    I spoke with Graeme Nattress today and he suggested recapturing and removing the pulldown with Cinema Tools which I don't really know how to do. I'm sure it's basic and do-able, but if I can avoid recapturing all of the NTSC footage, I'd like to.
    So, I figure I can convert the NTSC footage to PAL via Compressor or the Nattress convertor, but as far as I understand, I won't be able to preserve the tape source timecode. This is an issue for me, since I've captured everything at low - photo jpeg- resolutions, and will have to return to the master tapes for onlining.
    If I've gotta deal with recapturing or with potentially eye-matching all of the NTSC footage when we got to online, so be it. If there's another- that'd be better obviously. Any other thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum Nate!
    The only way I can think of that would preserve the TC would be to edit the 29.97 footage directly into the PAL sequence... Never tried this and wonder about bugs in the area surrounding the recapture, but it should recapture OK... I'd do a test of this to make sure the workflow will work OK... I'll also add that the NTSC footage will look pretty rough in the offline res probably when played back (and rendered each time you want to use it) in the PAL offline sequence... but that may not be such an issue. If it is, then you'll have to do what Graeme suggested first, then eyball it all in the online session as you've guessed. OR maybe just put it in twice on top of itself. Lower video track being the NTSC directly cut in, and upper track being the "transformed" version of the same. Delete V2 when you recapture...
    In any event, you'll still need to do what Graeme suggests for the Online session. His plugin will make the time needed to change the NTSC to PAL go a lot faster than using Compressor... and removing the pulldown pattern in Cinema Tools is a snap actually. It's just a matter of importing the shot needed, then selecting remove pulldown pattern from the file menu. Read the instructions on page 192 of CT's Help, it's really easy to do... Be sure that the footage is shot 24P and not 24PA.. if PA you'll want to recapture it removing the advanced pulldown pattern on the fly with FCP and you won't need to use CT at all in this scenario, just Compressor or Graeme's plugin to change that 24p to PAL...

    I am beginning to edit a documentary shot primarily in 24p with a DVX100a, and now I will be getting some footage shot in PAL. They will be shooting this week and my question is this: What might work best for conversion and look? Have them shoot standard PAL at 25fps or PAL 24p? Does the 24p mode really matter when I'll be converting to NTSC anyway? I have no experience working with PAL and am unsure what might look and work best.

  • Premiere (and AME) will not export 23.98 DV NTSC properly

    Half an hour of frustrated internet and message board searching have brought me no closer to a solution.  I'd be grateful for someone's help. I can't be the first person to have encountered this problem, but no one else seems to be talking about it.
    I have HD footage that was shot at 23.976.  I've edited it in a 23.976 timeline, and when I export to Quicktime in its native codec (which is Cineform) or any other codec, at 23.976, I get a 23.976 file.  No problem.
    But when I try to export DV/NTSC 24p, it SAYS it's going to export at 23.976, but then when I open up the resulting file, it's at 29.97 and there are extra interpolated frames added.  Same thing happens if I try to convert it after the fact with AME from a 23.976 HD export.
    It's driving me apeshit.  I need a true 24p DV-NTSC quicktime for the sound mix, and I'm at a total loss for how to create one, short of switching (back) to FCP.
    So what gives?
    Details:
    I'm on an iMac 21" running Premiere and AME CS6, thought I've tried it also in CC and get the same result.

    I'm not trying to be difficult or contrary.  Honestly, I'm not.  And I'm not "unwilling to take the input from the other posters".  But so far none of the other posters have actually answered my question, and one of them got snippy with me when I pointed out why his solution was not valid for my particular problem.
    People have suggested various reasons why it can't be done, but I know it can be done because I've done it.  And I've posted the evidence.  The Quicktime in the picture above plays fine out of the firewire DV port. It imports properly into Pro Tools at the proper frame rate, while maintaining the proper timecode.  This particular example doesn't have timecode burned into the video, but on ones that do, a pulldown to 29.97 means that I no longer get frame-accurate timecode on the video.  It also means that the sync pops can drift half a frame because they are now in 29.97instead of 23.976.  It means that I can't import the video into a Pro Tools project that already has a 23.98 video in it, since Pro Tools won't let you mix frame rates.  It also means that I can't do my sound editing with frame-accurate video, which is unacceptable.  So this is not a solution to my problem.
    Others have suggested that I just use a different codec.  That's not a solution to my problem either, since I need it to be DV/DVCPRO.  I didn't invent Pro Tools and I have no control over what formats it will accept for firewire output.  So that's also not a solution to the problem.
    To everyone who has answered so far, thank you for your input.  I appreciate it.  I'd be really grateful if anyone could chime in with an  answer to my original question: How do I create a standard definition DVCPRO 24p Quicktime in Adobe?  Maybe the answer is that "Adobe doesn't have this functionality".  But that's a different answer than "It can't be done, period."

  • Capturing in FCP6 from XH A1 in 24p please help

    Hi, I'm using my new final cut studio 2 to copture from Canon XH A1. I shot some footage in DV SP 16:9 in 24f.
    When I capture my footage it appears very blurry, many lines are washed out and it looks like a bad footage. Now, I've watched the same on TV and it was very nice. The question I have is if I'm setting my FCP and XHA1 correct for the capture. Here are the capture settings:

    The FCP sees the camcorder and captures the footage. However, the quality is poor as I've discribed above and also it captures ALL clips into one clip. It does not brake them into individual clips, even though I have set in user prefs "on timebrake start new clip"

    I have tried DV payback and not auto and I've also tried 480. I also did try to capture with this camera at 1080i60 HDV and it was GREAT.
    I'm gonna try all over again tonight, but one thing I've noticed is my by browser under the clip discription it shows 29.98fps. This is how FCP captured the video. I know for sure I've recoreded it at 24. I know for sure I was trying to set settinging at easy setup for 24p I don't know why it captured at 23.98.

    Filming on a Panisonic 24p camera but I imported it into final cut with a Sony HD camera. Will this mess up the quality of of my shots when I ad slow motion? I have noticed that the slow mo is a little chopy. PLEASE HELP!....

    24p is captured with your standard "DV-NTSC" easy setup, whereas 24pA is captured with the "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown" easy setup. Correct me if I'm wrong I still have yet to work in 24pA.

  • Still Frames in 24p

    I did a big shoot in 24p (advanced on a dvx-100), captured at 24p, and dropped in a 24p timeline. BUT the clip itself in the viewer plays at 30, and in the timeline, it plays at 24 but still has duplicate frames.
    Am I missing something? How should I fix this?

  • Easy Setup for 24p Question

    I have footage shot in standard 24p (F5 on the DVX camera)
    I will be editing on a 23.98 timeline
    I am also working with some 24pA material, so we're planning to use Cinema Tools to convert the standard 24p material for use in the timeline.
    In Easy Setup there is one choice for DV-NTSC
    And another DV-NTSC 24p (23.98)
    Confusing! Especially since I'm going to be editing in a 23.98 timeline. I know that the material on the tape, whether shot in 24p or 24pADV is 29.98; I'm just confused about which of these capture presets to choose
    I knew this information at one point but it has decided to either go to sleep or exit my brain entirely.

  • Shoot in PAL or NTSC

    I have read a lot of discussions on this subject and used the mighty search function but still it seems there is no definitive answer.
    So I've come to the experts.
    I'll be shooting a big project very soon and the client is based in Europe but they want to distribute the project (to the attending media people) in NTSC and PAL.
    They'll have a bunch of thumb drives to distribute to both European and North American media members and the project needs to be finished before they head home.
    The train of thought seems to be shoot in PAL 25p then convert to NTSC 24p via compressor. I'll shooting with a Sony EX-1 so shooting in PAL is a simple menu function. Stay away from interlaced, shoot progressive.

    If it's being distributed on a thumb drive (for computer playback) I don't think it matters.  Computers aren't NTSC or PAL.  It's only TV sets you need to worry about.

  • Capturing 24p from the HVX-200

    I just filmed some footage, with the Panasonic HVX-200. I filmed in 480/24p on a tape. when capturing it in FCP do I choose DV50-NTSC 24p, or DV-NTSC 24p in the easy set up menu? I think its DV50, Im just not 100% sure. IF anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.

    When shooting in 24p Normal, the camera is adding normal standard 3:2 pulldown to the video, which results in 24p footage designed to work with any non-linear editing suite and it will play back and look good directly to any NTSC monitor. You can use 24p Normal footage just like normal video from any DV camera, and everything will work fine, but obviously, the footage will have a film look to it. If you’re just going straight back to NTSC video tape, then using 24p Normal is the simplest, easiest workflow. No special treatment of the footage is needed and you really can just edit as normal.
    24p Advanced
    Before you shoot 24p Advanced, you should fully understand it’s workflow implications. If you watch 24p Advanced footage before you’ve removed it’s pulldown, then it will look a bit jumpy and jerky. This is totally correct, because 24p Advanced is not designed to be viewed as is.
    To use 24p Advanced and gain all it’s advantages, you should know that you cannot edit it as is (as this would leave it’s jerky looking pulldown intact), but you must first remove it’s pulldown. Final Cut Pro will do this for you, leaving you with the 24p footage without any of the extra “padding” fields that are added to make it’s frame rate 29.97fps. Now that your footage is 23.98fps, it must be edited on a 23.98fps timeline, and this can cause problems if you, for instance, want to include other footage, B-Roll, or stock footage, that comes from a different source. However, once you have your finished edit at 23.98fps, you can make a 24p DVD, which will allow you to compress your MPEG2 less than if you were making a normal 29.97fps NTSC DVD, and hence attain higher picture quality. Similarly, if you’re making a web movie, you will find it easier to get a higher quality result from 23.98fps media than normal NTSC media. 23.98fps movies are also easier to take out to film that 29.97fps movies.
    If you are editing in a 23.98fps timeline, Final Cut Pro will add pulldown on the fly, over Firewire, so that you can see your movie on a normal NTSC monitor. Similarly, it will add pulldown when going back to DV tape. However, this will not work on a non-DV format output, say to Digital Betacam, and slower Macintoshes do not have the power to add 3:2 pulldown in realtime, falling back to lower quality pulldowns which although are not too bad while editing, will not make the final project look as acceptably good on television as a final product.
    What that tells me is that 24P just adds a "look" of 24 fps to the footage that resembles that of telecined film, but that you work with normally at 29.97fps. Or, if you want to, you can add a reverse telecine and work at 23.98. Either way.
    BUT, with 24PA, the footage looks jittery when played on the tape. So sure, you can work with it and output it to tape, but that tape is useless to anyone OTHER than someone who can capture it and perform a reverse telecine to work with it. It will not work as a Master tape for any viewable purpose: Broadcast TV, projected video from tape, a master tape for dubbing purposes. So, in effect, it is useless as a tape master, and should be avoided.
    If you want to have a tape master, shoot and edit 24P at the 29.97 framerate.

    I've recently been experimenting with the 24p capabilities of an older Canon XL2. I've read up a little on pulldowns and the appropriate setup, but when it comes to actually working with the footage in Final Cut I'm lost. I've have a few test clips recorded at both 24p (3:2) and 24pA (2:3:3:2) in Standard Definition. From reading, I've understood that when pulling 24p into a 29.97 sequence it's best to record at (3:2) but for a 24p workflow (2:3:3:2) is the best option.
    So, my clips are DV/DVCPRO and I've been pulling them into a DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) and DV-NTSC 24p Advanced Pulldown Removal anamorphic sequence. My first problem is that both my (3:2) and (2:3:3:2) clips are interpreted by Final Cut as 29.97 and the Field Dominance as "Lower (Even)." Second, when I drag the clip into the sequence it changes the field dominance from "None" to "Lower (Even)" which causes the footage to display as interlaced. I fix this by just changing it back (but why would it change and why aren't the clips progressive?).
    I guess my question is: considering I only shoot for web what should I shoot my footage at and what type of sequence should I be working in? I like the look of 24p and would really like come up with a workflow that supports it.
    I'm working in Final Cut Pro 6.0.6.

    One last bit of information. Traditionally the Canon XL2 records to DV tape but the the deck has gone out and now we record to a hard drive that connects via firewire to the camera.

  • 24p footage in 30fps sequence is blurrier

    Hello,
    I'm about to load 20 hours of feature film footage shot on a dvx100b at 24p (regular, not adv.). Before importing a few shots of test footage I chose "DV-NTSC 24p" as Easy Set-up.
    Every clip brought into the timeline requires rendering, and when I looked at the clips I saw that despite my setting, they imported at 29.97.
    I'm willing to edit at 29.97 instead of sticking to 24p but here's the problem: I reset my Easy Setting as straight "DV-NTSC" and made a new sequence, and brought in the same clip as I'd loaded in the 24p sequence. A frame in the 29.97 sequence clip is notably less crisp than the identical frame in the 24p sequence clip.
    Intuitively it makes sense to edit in 24p and just pull down (push up?) to 30 when it's DVD-burnin' time. Otherwise, I'd be dealing with 20% of my frames duplicated in the edit and who needs that?
    Can I just bring in the footage at 24p and edit that way, or will the blur just come back? Thanks very much in advance for any help breaking through this bottleneck.

    Sean -- that's cool.
    Do keep this in mind when shooting with the DVX though...
    24p setting and 24pA setting:
    24p Setting is meant as a FILM LOOK setting. 24p setting will shoot from the CCDs 24 times a second but when it goes to tape it gets a pulldown cadence of 3.2 standard pulldown cadence - which means 2 frames are combined and added as 'interlaced' frames bringing the total frame count from 24 to 30 frames per second.
    This is for two reasons... 1) miniDV tape won't take anything other than 30 frames per second, and 2) the 3.2 cadence is the standard cadence used by TV folk to convert film to 30fps and is least offensive to the eye.
    Again, 24p setting on the dvx is to be used ONLY as a film look setting to be shown on standard 30fps display medium.
    NOW --
    24pA is when you want to shoot something and KEEP it in 24fps... either for film transfer or for 'perfect' film look on web or DVD (though as Pat says, the DVD player might be adding pulldown anyway --- which although I have the HIGHEST respect for Patrick... I've never heard myself before.)
    What happens here is again, lens to CCD all happens at 24 times a second... BUT when going to tape a different cadence is added ... one that is easier for FCP to remove. This is the 2.3.3.2 cadence. Same process as before... frames are combined into 'interlaced' frames (upper half frame A and lower half frame B) and added to the 24 fps to make 30fps.
    Now -- when capturing 24pA material, FCP will remove these 'interlaced' frames and return you to 24 progressive frames a second. PERFECT for film transfer.

  • Capturing OfflineRT for 24p Advanced?

    Hey guys,
    I've been searching the forum for an answer, but I haven't been able to find anything too clear. I've decided to edit a feature I'm current working on with OfflineRT due to the 100's of hours already shot/still to be shot for the project. Director wants access to everything. But since it's low budget, we definitely don't have the space to have any of it on-line. Can somebody recommend what settings are necessary to capture and edit 24pa anamorphic footage (we want to output to film eventually) using OfflineRT on FCP5?

    No, it's not working for me. And I'm certain it is user error. For one thing, in order to capture with the pulldown being removed, do you absolutely have to use the source camera? Because we have it attached to a regular DV deck and it's absolutely refusing to check that part of the preset. Second, the capture preset for OfflineRT NTSC 24p (23.98) is GENERIC CAPTURE TEMPLATE.... with no real sign of anything for 24p. It's really frustrating that this isn't as simple as it could be. At this point, I don't really care about it being anamorphic... but I'd like to get the darn thing actually capturing at 24fps (23.98... or something!) Ugh!
