NVIDIA driver doesn't dynamically change power source

I'm using the NVIDIA driver on an MSI laptop, and I've noticed that it doesn't dynamically detect my power source.  The result of this is that if I boot the computer on battery power, then plug it in, the video card will continue to perform at less-than-maximum performance until I reload the driver with modprobe (of course, this is annoying because I have to exit from X11 first, then restart X11 after).  This goes the other way, as well; that is, I can boot the machine on AC power, then unplug it and the video card will continue to run as if it were still on AC power.  I have the "PowerMizer" configured to "Adaptive" in the settings.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?  Any ideas on how to solve it?
Thanks.
Arch x86_64
NVIDIA 195.36.15
MSI MS-1651 laptop
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

Took me a bit to work out why my nvidia card wouldn't behave the way I wanted it to on battery / AC.
I've just achieved the behaviour you're describing working on my Dell laptop (I wanted adaptive on battery, full performance on AC in X).
What works for me is:
Option    "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x3322; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1"
... in xorg.conf and making sure you have installed acpid and starting it at boot.
It seems the nvidia driver uses acpid to detect if the cable has been pulled or not -- if you don't have acpid running it will always stay at max performance with my xorg.conf device settings listed above.
All I did was install acpid, started it at boot in rc.conf, no acpid configuration at all (i.e. I didn't touch a file except for rc.conf after I installed it), then I found the nvidia driver was able to detect the AC state.
If you want to tweak the settings for an on boot scenario (e.g. runlevel 3, no X), I'm pretty sure you can pass module parameters to get what you want -- however I haven't bothered with that as I'm always in X anyway.
Hope this helps, cheers.

  • Nvidia driver doesn't recognize GTX 275

    I've followed the steps on the wiki for the nvidia driver, but when I start X it does not recognize my GTX 275 card.  I think the driver may simply not support this card yet (it doesn't according to nvidia).  Can anyone confirm this?  Does anyone know when a new driver will be released?  Also, would the nouveau driver work temporarily until nvidia releases something?

    We were having a similar issue.  For some reason, the line that specifies which driver to use was not added to the xorg.conf file after installation.  The steps shown above by deej are basically the same, but they add a lot of fluff to the xorg.conf file that may not be needed.
    We were able to add it and get it to work by simply adding the following line to the xorg.conf file:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Doesn't matter what this says"
    Driver "nvidia" <-- This is the line we added
    EndSection
    Don't know if this applies to this distro as well (we are running ubuntu), but we had to change the file /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common from this:
    DISABLED_MODULES=""
    To this:
    DISABLED_MODULES="nv" <-- We had to restart after this step
    We have not done thorough testing on our machines, but have three of them up and running properly now.  We have several more machines to work on and I'll try and get the exact process we are using posted on here (ex. Modify filex, install drivers, modify filey, etc.).

  • Dynamically change the source flv video in flv play back...

    Dear Friends,
    Iam trying to load flv files in flash using flvplayerback components. iam using the following code. Initially iam loadign video1.flv. Then i want to load video2.flv when i press next button. It is loading video2 only when i press next button after finishing the full loaded video1. i want change the source anytime please tell the right way.
    import fl.video.VideoProgressEvent;
    import fl.video.VideoEvent;
    plr.source = "video1.flv";
    plr.addEventListener(VideoProgressEvent.PROGRESS,showmsg);
    function showmsg(event:ProgressEvent) {
    if (plr.bytesTotal == plr.bytesLoaded) {
      trace("Loaded");
    loaderpic.visible = false;
    plr.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, comple);
    function comple(event:VideoEvent) {
    trace("Movie Finished");
    nxt.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, nxtclick);
    function nxtclick(event:MouseEvent) {
    plr.stop();
    plr.source = "video2.flv";
    plr.play();
    Thanks in Advance,
    Syed Abdul Rahim

    The code you show works fine for me when I set things up to match.  When the button is clicked the first video is stopped and the second one replaces it.  Maybe you have some other code that is interfering.

  • NVIDIA Driver doesn't recognize entire screen[SOLVED]

    Hello,
    i just installed Arch Linux onto a 4GB USB drive to test Arch Linux natively on my desktop PC.
    It has a GeForce GTX 580 so I installed pacman -S nvidia + xorg-server and gnome.
    My monitors native resolution is 1920x1200 @ 60Hz and it is conected via HDMI.
    Now it looks like I have a smaller (active area) screen within my screen and 2-3cm black borders on the side.
    WIthin that is the actual desktop which doesn't fill the entire active area either. You can see that because
    it still has black borders which are little bit lighter thou.
    When I use nvidia-settings and set my Desktop to 1920x1200 it streches into the disabled area. I have
    to use 1680x1050 in order to have the entire desktop accessible.
    During installation everything was fine with nouveau and my setup was using the native resolution. After
    I booted my stick for the first time it loaded nouveau to but also didn't use my screen right. So I'm a bit
    puzzled.
    Anyone has advice?
    Kind Regards,

    Do you have any advice on how to do that? I searched the internet for "VX2835wm EDID linux" and found similiar problems but no real solution.
    I can get my EDID Information when booted into Windows but I don't think I can use it as Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-1:/..." The binaries
    I get with AcquireEDID in the nvidia settings while in linux look very diffrent.

  • P100-240: Toshiba GPU driver is old, Nvidia driver doesn't enable the fan?

    Hi,
    I was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.
    My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).
    The problem here is that:
    a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
    b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)
    so, Upon using the Nvidia drivers the laptops fan does not kick in, sending the systems temporature up to 106cand finally turning it off. It turned back on but basic graphics acceleration then failed to work.
    SO, can we get an updated driver build? OR some kind of fan control app? or can you update your bios to enable nvidias drivers to function?
    I feel like I cannot use my laptop for its purpose at the moment- I have reverted to installing a non-ACPI pc driver to force the fans to stay on which works well but then basic system functions like turn off do not work.
    I have also been advised that this design flaw could be considered to make the system "not fit for purpose" under which case I could just return the laptop under the Sale of Goods act.
    Though really, i'd just like to get my system working properly. It's bad enough not being able to run Linux on it, but even worse that windows doesnt work properly with it with official drivers.
    One final question: Can I get the older BIOSes? several fixes work with them but not with the 4.0 bios (mainly linux fixes but as long as one OS works I don't care!)
    Any tips on this are also welcome! Thanks for your help. :-)

    Hi
    >was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.
    If you want to hear anything from Toshiba then you have to contact them. This forum is only a user to user forum and unfortunately you will not find anyone from Toshiba here.
    But maybe you want to hear my opinion;
    >My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).
    >a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
    Well, many Toshiba notebooks are delivered and equipped with the same graphic cards. Maybe you have to look in other notebook series which are delivered with the same card for a newer GPU driver.
    But, you are right and generally the Toshiba graphic drivers are a little bit older as the original one from GPU manufacturer.
    Why? First of all the nVidia or ATI original drivers are not designed for the notebook usage. These are drivers for desktop PC graphic cards. I visited the area for mobile drivers and found a info that I have to look on the notebook manufacturer site!!! This said everything!!!!
    >b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)
    As mentioned above the original GPU drivers are not designed for the notebook usage.
    Why? Because the notebook GPUs cannot be cooled like the graphic cards for the desktop PC!!!
    The Toshiba own drivers support an overheating protection which helps to avoid an GPU damage!!!!
    The original nVidia or ATI drivers do not support such overheating protection!!!
    If you want to use such drivers, you can do this ONLY at your own risk!
    >Can I get the older BIOSes?
    It seems Toshiba page provides only the newest BIOS. Maybe the authorized service provider can help you and could send you an older BIOS version.
    Two years ago I contacted the ASP in my country and got a early version of my BIOS for the A50

  • Question about dynamically changing image source

    hi, this might be a stupid question that i've simply never
    seen, but i have a picture on a page that, when the user clicks a
    link below, needs to change to an altered picture. probably very
    simple, i just need code that will change the image source of a
    named image by clicking a link. thanks for any help you can give
    me.

    You can use a remote rollover technique that uses css
    (nesting one or more elements inside an anchor link) and absolute
    positioning, or JavaScript.
    Here is a quick JavaScript to achieve this effect:
    xhtml code
    <head>
    <script src="external.js" language = "javascript" type =
    "text/javascript"></script>
    </head>
    <body>
    <p><a href="new_page.html" id="arrow"> New
    Page</a></p>
    <img src="images/image1_off.gif" width="100" height="20"
    id="arrowImg" alt="arrow" />
    </body>
    external JavaScript file
    window.onLoad = rolloverInit;
    function rolloverInit() {
    for (var i=0; i<document.links.length; i++)
    var linkObj = document.links
    if (linkObj.id) {
    var imgObj = document.getElementById(linkObj.id + "Img");
    if (imgObj) {
    setupRollover(linkObj, imgObj);
    function setupRollover(thisLink, thisImage) [
    this.Link.imgToChange = thisImage;
    this.Link.onmouseout = rollOut;
    this.Link.onmouseover = rollOver;
    thisLink.outImage = new Image();
    this.Link.outImage.src = this.Image.src;
    thisLink.overImage = new Image();
    thisLink.overImage.src = "images/" + thisLink.id +
    "_on.gif";
    function rollOver() {
    this.imgToChange.src = this.overImage.src;
    function rollOut() {
    this.imageToChange.src = this.outImage.src;
    There is a lot going on here but if you know a little
    JavaScript it will be failry easy to work it out. The important
    thing is to note the file layout, naming conventions and image
    constructs. Make sure the ids, etc are matched in the functions and
    html code.
    This technique shows the user what the image will become if
    they click the text when they mouse over the text link. This is
    handy for showing a preview of an image. You can alter the script
    to change the image without a preview if you don't want that
    effect.

  • Can´t find faulty Power Source replacement via Apple Website.

    I can´t underestand this.
    My iMac G5 20" (RevB) has issues because the power source doesn´t work properly (now not at all). I follow the 'step by step' indications in Apple´s pages that makes me reach that diagnostic (internal diagnostic LED examination, etc).
    They clearly suggest then to get a power source replacement. I follow all the steps in the corresponding page (serial number, mac account, etc...) but in the drop-down list of replaceable parts doesn´t appear the Power Source.
    Anyone can explain me this? Power source is one of the iMac G5 (Rev B) user replaceable parts, like optical drive, hard disk, etc... but while I can order these I can´t select Power source because it isn´t listed. However, I repeat, they say I can get It in order to solve my problem.
    Any ideas?
    iMac G5 20" (RevB) Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    I have new information for you.
    Today I have just called Apple´s Technical Service (in my country) and in fact IT IS POSSIBLE to order a new Power Source for my iMac. They are sending me one now.
    But, this is only possible for iMac G5 (RevB) Ambient Light Sensor power sources. Not for RevA or RevC.
    However, there´s a flaw in Apple´s pages. It seems they can´t distinguish what Revision of iMac you are dealing with (A-B), I suppose they assume it´s 'A' and so then you can´t get the Power Source.
    I want to point this problem because if someone at Apple´s reading this It would be nice to fix that.

  • Black screen upon wake from sleep when I change power state while in sleep

    Hi,
    I'm having this problem where my MacbookPro won't always wake from sleep.
    OSX is 10.6.3 and fully updated.
    I've done a lot of troubleshooting, and I can now replicate the issue 100%:
    1 - Put the MacbookPro to sleep by closing lid
    2 - Change power source (from plugged-in to battery or vice versa)
    3 - open lid - MacbookPro will wake, but stays at black screen and is unresponsive.
    Only if I change power state while sleeping will this issue show. Anyone else experincing this issue, and anygot got a clue on what to do?
    regards,
    Lasse

    I've seen the same issue after upgrading to 10.6.3. I have a one year old MacBook Pro. I would have the screen be black after coming back from sleep or hibernate (tried both).
    The workaround I found is to close the lid -almost- all the way and then immediately open it back up again, like I am catching the Mac going back to sleep and then changing my mind. For whatever reason, this has been reliably solving my issue for the last couple weeks reliably.
    Only other oddity I noticed is that immediately after upgrading OS X told me that my one year old battery needed to go in for servicing...
    Anyway, now all looks right with the world assuming you don't mind a quick close/open cycle.. Lovely...

  • I have new hard drive in macbook pro(08) and have SATA cable with external power source to old hard drive (10.5.8)via. USB port and newer drive(10.6.8) will not recognize older drive..Do I need to partition newer drive with older disk to recover data?

    I have new HD 750GB Hybrid in 2008 Macbook Pro 17" w/ Snow Leopard 10.6.8  connected to old Hard drive(250GB that had 10.5.8 on it at time of failure) via SATA cable to USB port with external power source.. Computer not acknowledging old HD at all in Disk Utility or otherwise (that I'm aware of)..Do I need to partition New HD and load old(10.5.8) onto partition to recognize older drive for data recovery? Thanks Wayno08

    You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.
    You might want to check out the hard drive troubleshooting bootk in the downloads section of this web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
    They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction  and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
    I would suggest the following:
    Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
    Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
    If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
    If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The  only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.
    Disk Warrior can be found at:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
    The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the  damage has already been done.
    Let us know what happens.

  • Changing PowerMizer settings of Nvidia driver without restarting X

    Is it possible to change PowerMizer settings of Nvidia driver WITHOUT restarting X?
    I know this normally is not possible, but I'm asking about some hax0r tricks that might exist.
    I would like to include those settings in automatic power saving script, but of course to do that, it has to work on a continuously running environment.

    I've written crap!!!
    This is the way:
    gdmflexiserver --xnest
    if you want a window with a new login!!!
    and
    gdmflexiserver
    if you just want another x session  (Tere will be two of them in the same time).
    You should .xinitrc alon, and use a display manager (such as gdm)
    if you want this just modify in /etc/inittab
    :x:5:respawn:/opt/gnome/bin/gdm -nodaemon
    it should be the last line.
    respawn means that if you close the x serv, it will restart

  • How can I change the source file so it is direct from external hard drive?

    I am trying to make a movie on imovie of a snowboarding trip that I went on, there is around 80 to 100 gig of mp4 movies that will not fit on my computer that I have stored on my external harddrive. I had the movie half finished then found I could do no more as I had no space left in my mac. I had to delete everything and start again but I'm not doing this until I can find a way of changing the source file so I can take them direct from my external hard drive as to not use up all my computers available space. I have moved imovie to my external hard drive but it still tries to read from a movie file on my mac, how can I change that so it will read from a source file on my external hard drive, is it possible?? Can someone help me??

    Hi Bengt, Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
    I have a WD 1TIG hard drive and are using usb connection, is it possible to use fire wire with these? I have had trouble with a lot of the videos I Imported, once they downloaded the file in the viewer window showed up blank and when I mouse over them it places a picture of another file in the window and wont drag and drop into the movie window, like their corrupted or something? Had to delete just about all of them and start again. Also is it possible to select a bunch of videos in the viewer window as to change the dates to the correct dates? All I have been able to do is "select all" which is no help.

    Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
    This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

    When I press "select backup location" in the Time Machine section of System Preferences, my external hard drive doesn't appear as an option.  How do I change this?  My external hard drive is a FreeAgent GoFlex Drive.

    Hi, what Format is the external Drive?
    They usually come PC Formatted for Fat32/MSdos, or NTFS... is there anything on it now?

    (To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

    I performed a time machine backup without plugging my labtop into a power source. My computer died and all the settings were changed, ie the clock and date were changed back to 2001. So I tried to restore my computer using a previous time machine backup. (which I now know was wrong). However, when time machine tried to restore it said there was not enough room to do a backup. It seems that it did a half backup because some essential  files such as system profiler are now missing. Can I undo this restore...? What can I do to fix this

    You need to do a full system restore, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.
    If that sends a message, please note the exact wording.

  • Dynamically change the Priority Group of Logical Table Sources in OBIEE 11g

    Hi All,
    I have 2 Logical Table Sources(LTS 1 and LTS 2 for a Logical Table in BMM Layer).
    Example: Logical Table : Sample
    LTS Source 1 : Sample 1(Priority Group Set to 1)
    LTS Source 2 : Sample 2(Priority Group Set to 0)
    I have set the Priority Group of Sample 1 LTS Source to 1 and Priority Group of Sample 2 LTS Source to 0.
    I need to dynamically change the Priority Group of Sample 1 LTS Source to 0 if my role is DEVELOPER where role is a column in database.
    If my role is not equal to DEVELOPER then the Priority Group of Sample 1 LTS Source will remain same(1).
    Please suggest how can i achieve this.
    Thanks,
    Soukath Ali
