Occasional "No SIM card installed" message on recently-received phone

As part of an AppleCare support matter, I recently received a "new or refurbished" iPhone 3G. Generally it works fine.
Every couple of days I get a "No SIM card installed" message, and "No SIM" appearing where the signals bars usually are. Removing and replacing the SIM card stops the message and the phone works, for a day or two.
The same SIM card worked with no problem in my previous iPhone 3G. It also works with no problem in a plain old GSM phone I use for backup.
Any suggestions?

Try putting the sim in another phone let it connect and then return it to 3g .Let it reconnect .
Completely fixed the same problem on my iPhone 4

My phone just stopped working - I get a "No Sim Card Installed" Message.   I have not changed any settings.

So you have not changed anything or updated
try reseating the sim (assume it is a microsim not a hand cut )
    and go through Apple troubleshooting
    Restart ,reset ,restore
May be the sim has gone "bad"

  • No SIM Card Installed message iOS8

I have a 3rd gen iPad with LTE. After any reboot using iOS7, I would get a pop up message saying "No SIM Card Installed" and that was that. It would never show up again. After updating to iOS8, this message pops up randomly and it's getting irritating.
I've gone through every app and disabled "Use Cellular Data" but I'm still getting the message.
I don't have a SIM installed since the data plan costs have gotten out of hand and i only use Wi-Fi. What changed with iOS8 to cause this to keep popping up and how do I stop it, save for doing a complete wipe and reinstall?
    Thanks,
    David

I have an iPad Air and kept getting the No SIM Card message, very frustrating
Went to the Apple store for a dummy SIM, and even after putting it in and leaving it, it didn't work.
But I THINK I FOUND THE SOLUTION!! Haven't seen the message since I tried this
Step 1: Take your iPhone SIM that actually works and put it into your iPad
Step 2: Turn on Cellular Data on iPad, let it connect with network
Step 3: Turn off cellular data, and leave the SIM card in iPad
Step 4: Reset iPad (turn it off by holding the On/Off Sleep/Wake button
Step 5: Turn it back on
Step 6: Take SIM out, there should be the No SIM Card message just once
After this I haven't seen it pop up again (for the last few hours!!!)
Remember to like this if it works for you!!!

  • No sim card installed message

My iPad indicates the message "no sim card installed".  Has never dropped.  I have tried every possible way that is mentioned on the internet to try to mitigate it - no result.  Toggling with the airline modus, shutting the iPad down, hard rebooth, restoring it without the sim card in it, getting a brand new sim card - nothing works.  Is this a IOS software problem?  Does anybody have any clue?  Just over one year old, hence not under warranty :-)

Well I have had this problem, on an ever increasing basis, since at least the end of last year. Several months ago I took my device into an Apple Store and was assured this was a common problem which would be resolved by removing the sim, turning off the device, then reinserting it (the advice may have been to remove the sim before switching the device off, I forget which way around, but regardlss I tried both and I dont think it should really matter either way). It worked in the shop anyway, but the apparent solution lasted no time at all. So some weeks later I went in and booked an appintment. This time I was advised I would need a new sim, as I had suspected anyway, so I called my 3G provider and got one and it didn't change anything. So I carried on and the sim disappeared more and more often, until literally every time I picked my iPad up I had to turn it off, and then eventually there would be maybe only 10 seconds of use before it was was gone. So I went to my Apple Store again, and had to book an apppointment for the next day. I went back again and was told this is a problem with the device which cannot be repaired as the ipad is sealed. Therefore I need a new device. But my warranty has now 'just' expired so it will cost £199. I've decided to cut my losses, even though I've still got another whole year of 3G payments... Anger aside, I cannot understand why this was not mentioned when the iPad was under warranty and more to the point, why, even now, my own device cannot be repaired, when the replacement unit I was offered as a costly replacement was itself a reconditioned unit!

  • Hi, my new Iphone 6 started to show an alert that reads: "No SIM card installed" any ideas on how to fix this, now I can't use my phone and is only 1 week old... HELP SOS

I have a new IPhone 6 just went to the store last Saturday to connect it, (I am replacing my IPhone 5s) it says that I am updated on IOS 8.0.2 but now started to show a message that reads like this: " No SIM card installed" and I have no phone line or anything, my carrier is Sprint and I just got back from there and they told me that this is something I have to deal with APPLE because they have nothing to do with software. Anybody experiencing the same thing? any light in the tunnel? HELP....

    Hello henry lfrommiami,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To troubleshoot this issue where your iPhone gives you the message "No SIM Card installed" please follow the steps below.
Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
Turn airplane mode on and then off again.
    Restart your iPhone.
Check for a carrier settings update. Go to Settings > General > About. Install any available update.
Remove the SIM card and make sure that it's a valid SIM that your carrier provided. Also make sure that it's not damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
A SIM tray that comes with one iPhone model won't necessarily work with a different iPhone model. When you insert the correct SIM tray, the SIM tray should be flush with the device.
If you have another SIM card, insert it. You can use a SIM card from any phone with the same format as your iPhone SIM card. If your iPhone works with that SIM card, contact the carrier that issued your original SIM card.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you still see the issue, contact Apple support.
If you see 'No SIM' alert on iPhone
    Cheers,
    Alex H.

  • No SIM card installed, No SIM, Invalid SIM card

    Hello,
I'm getting No SIM card installed on my iPhone 4. I got a new SIM card and 15 minutes later same error. I've reset network settings and also tried a restore with no luck. Genius Bar recommended wiping and starting over without restoring from Backup. Was going to erase mine and start over tonight but....
My wife bought a brand new iPhone 4 from AT&T today... At exactly the same time both of our phones came up with the No SIM card installed message! Her brand new iPhone 4 said the same thing.... This is after I sync'd it up to iTunes, only a few songs and a bunch of apps.
There is something going on with either the network or something with the phone or iTunes causing a problem with the phone. I've almost pinned it to something in iTunes 10.1 because I think this started happening about the same time I updated to iTunes 10.1. Both of us are now on iTunes 10.1.1.4.
iOS 4.2.1 on both phones... Anyone else experiencing similar issues?
    Thanks

I am having the same problem. I went to AT&T to get a new SIM card as someone suggested in another thread. Now I still get the same error message, but a lot more often at least once or twice a day. I have done hard resets each time and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Tech support suggested going to the Apple store, but the closes one is about 3 hours away.
As far as iTunes update, I think you are on to something because that is about the time mine started acting up. I am hoping an update in iTunes or the phone software will fix the problem.

  • No sim card installed error on iPad 3G

    Hello to the forum,
My iPad 3G cannot read the micro sim card installed issued by Vodafone Greece. This micro sim card works perfectly on an iPhone 4. So what i did was i restore to factory settings and install the sim card, it didn't work, I restore the hole ipad and set it up from itunes as a new ipad, it didnt work either so far at IOS 3.2.2. I restore and update to 4.2.1 set it up as a new ipad and I am still getting the no sim card installed message. I restored network settings i tried with wifi on wifi off location services on and off NOTHING works still no sim...
Can someone please advise? What is the issue? Can it be Fixed?

Chiming in from the US, it seems that a lot more of us are having this issue as well lately. My iPad has worked well under 3 OSs and I have never seen that NO SIM message until this week. I am running iOS 5 since it was released, but have not yet upgraded to iOS 5.0.1, and all of a sudden, I see that NO SIM message pretty much all the time.
I have never removed my SIM or had any trouble with 3G before this week. It's not a big problem for me since I don't use it very often at all - not even on a data plan now - but it's annoying and not what I paid for. And if it happens to my wife, she'll be in trouble.
Apple folks, has there been any official acknoeldgement for this issue, and has it been properly elevated so it will be addressed? There are quite a few threads on this out there.

  • IPhone 3gs shows no Sim Card installed in newly unlocked phone.

My uncle has just givin me his old I phone 3GS which was locked on Orange.
He has paid for the phone to be unlocked and orange have emailed over the confirmation that it is unlocked and how to unlock it.
This is where the problems start.  Windows recognises that there is a phone and I tunes tries to activate the phone but it cannot and the No Sim Card installed message appears (even though there is a brand new Tesco I phoen sim).  I have taken the phone into recovery mode and restored from there, however this has still not resolved the problem.
Once the system restores the software the phone restarts to the menu screen and the same message appears.
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! it is so frustrating.

  • ITunes say's there is no sim card installed

I've had the iphone 3 for a while. I plugged it into the computer to update it, and when I unplugged it from the computer, it restarted. I tried to activate it without itunes, but it tells me to connecting to itunes to activate it. When I plugged it in to itunes, it say's there is no sim card installed. I ejected the phone, took out the sim card, put it back in and plugged it back in. Nothing changed. How do I get it to work again?

phones which are sim unclocked by jailbrake will be sim relocked when one update the ios version

  • HT1414 after restoring i keep getting no sim card installed when activating.

after restoring i keep getting no sim card installed when activating.

Was the phone unlocked offically by the carrier before restoring? If it was unlocked by a hack it will be locked again after a restore or update.

  • I keep getting the message :No SIM card installed   Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone - there is a sim in the tray in the phone...how do I fix this?

I have recently upgraded from the iPhone 3g to an iPhone 4, and I was going to give my 3g to a friend, but it comes up with the message as above, whenever the phone is turned on...
There is a sim card installed...
My carrier (virgin) say that they have unlocked the phone from optus.
    How do I fix this?
    thanks
    Anushka

Virgin use the Optus network here in Australia - which is why, the 3G phones showed you connected to the Optus network, and not to the Virgin network...They don't have their own network, they piggyback on Optus - which is why it would show that it is locked to Optus!
They also said they would unlock my iPhone 4 - which has been done!  So there's obviously something wrong with the phone...

How do I remove an informational message that repeatedly appears on the center of my screen of the refurbished iPad that I am trying to set up.  The message is "No SIM card installed."

  • Iphone 3gs no longer will work  after iOs5 update, comes up with message ' there is no sim card installed in the phone. Can anyone help me please. I am working as a volunteer in a remote location in Asia and no where near an Apple shop etc?

I have tried to  update my 3GS phone and now it longer works as it comes up with message there is no sim card installed in the phone. Can anyone help please as I am no where near technical support as I am working as volunteer in remote Asian country

    Hi Allan,
Thanks for asking, I knew I had forgotten to mention something. The phone was indeed unofficially unlocked, since there were no apple stores or even premium resellers in the region I lived in during the given procedure had to be done.
I understand this could be a further complication, especially the fact the home button does not work. However, I was wondering if there would be a possibility to use a third-party application instead of iTunes to restore the iPhone? IF someone does know of such an application, I could easily solve further problems myself. Basically, the main issue here is my lack of ability to enter DFU mode.

It sounds a lot like your phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it prior to your trying to update it.
If that is the case, it is nowpermanently bricked.
