Off topic - 3ds max 9 and 3ds files

Hi I'm wondering if there is any way to add materials and colors to 3ds files. If not how do you export the textures and materials to be added later?
I've got the loader Inspector3DS/Loader3DS and I can't import any material or anything other than the geometry of the model from a 3ds file (need to add the colors and lights in java). Maybe .3ds files isn't the best approach, but is there any loader for .max files? I'm new to Java3D and really need help. What I want is to import a model get it to show, maybe add some directional lights but I still want the main configuration from 3ds max like the materials (as posted above).
Summary:
Export model with materials/color (.3ds)
or
Save .max file
then
Import model with materials (.3ds)
or
Import .max file
Show it on screen (this works now if I add lights in java)
//Thanks Considerate

Hi all,
I received a response from the tech development side of
Autodesk on the Max 9 and
Shockwave 3D issue.
The reply was a little different to the one I posted before.
I have been told it was
not a mistake but an incompatibility with the higher bit
functionality of Max 9. So
that's why it was removed. But it is temporary.
Was told:
"This problem has been flagged and is currently being worked
on.
We will have some service packs sometime in the near future.
Cannot disclose a date
at the moment."

  • Can i run autocad 3d, 3ds max and autodesk inventor on imac?

    Hello you all!
I'm ready to buy an i-Mac for my work, but first I need to be 100% sure that it runs AutoCAD 3d. I would really need Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk Inventor as well, but I can live without.
Please let me know if anyone knows, and aslo (as I never had anything to do with mac computers) I'd like to ask if I'll be able to keep updating these softwares whenever needed.
Last, does anyone know specifically what specs should I focus on among operating systems or other things when deciding which i-Mac to buy?
    Thanks a lot guys!
    Christina

Very simple to find out, look at the system requirements for the apps and then compare to the iMac you are interested in. As far as updating the apps that isn't a question to ask here, you need to contact the developers or even better just visit their website periodically to see if updates for their products are released. If the app's are available from Apple's App Store then updates would be released from teh App Store. If you are not familiar with the App Store please click:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/apps/app-store.html?cid=wwa-us-kwg-mac-com&siclientid=5 899&sessguid=96a06dba-3ee0-4df6-9e13-a0a08104279c&userguid=96a06dba-3ee0-4df6-9e 13-a0a08104279c&permguid=96a06dba-3ee0-4df6-9e13-a0a08104279c
    for information.
BTW if you don't feel comfortable with this answer then i'd recommend contacting Autodesk and asking what hardware specifications they recommend for an iMac and also visiting your local Apple Store.

  • 3DS Max and After Effects.

Hello, I just figured this would be one of the best places to stop by to look for an answer. Recently I've made an avi in 3DS max and tried importing it into AE. Here's the problem: Prior to importing it, the video looks amazing. It's crisp and unpixelated and just looks plain good. After importing it however... well it looks like crap to be honest. It's utterly pixelated and it just destroys the video quality. The aspect ratio is the same and the size of the composition is the same... I just can't figure out what the problem is at all.

Need a little more detail. What codec? What size? What PAR? If your footage is interpreted as non square pixels and you have Toggle Pixel Aspect Ratio checked in the Composition window you'll see interpolated pixels there. If your comp window isn't set to 100% magnification you're not seeing every pixel. If the Composition window is set to fit and the magnification is something like 63% then your preview is going to look bad. You may improve the look by going through the Previews section of preferences and setting the Zoom Quality to More Accurate.

  • Off topic question in DOS Batch files ...

    Hi,
I am sorry in advance, for posting an off-topic question. But I had no other known way.
I need to invoke 8 sessions of a java program on 8 different windows. I use Windows platform. I want to write a batch file that will cause the java program to be invoked on a separate window, so that I can watch the execution of 8 sessions at a time. How can I do this (specifically, how can I open a new window in batch files in DOS)?
    Thanks in advance,
    K
My java program invocation is like this:
    C:\>java Site i
where i is a command line argument that will go from 0 to 7.

Batch files (to my limited knowledge) are just "macros" that procedurally run DOS commands. It's just like opening a new command window and sitting there typing a list of commands, except the computer does it for you. So, for example, to run the commands java HelloWorld and cls, the java program would first have to execute before the screen can be cleared. For your purposes, you may need a small launcher app.

  • Somewhat off topic, wedding lighting and wireless lav. question

Hello everyone! This question is slightly off topic, but I'm desperate for an answer. I've been doing wedding videos for some time now and it's time to upgrade my setup. I'm currently in the market for a good, reliable wireless lavaliere mic, and a good quality on camera light. I use a panasonic DVX100b for all of my footage. For the light I'd like to spend about $400.00 ish or less, but I will spend more if the price jump dramatically increases the performance. I also have about $600 to spend on a wireless lav. system, again I will pay more if the jump in price brings a considerable jump in quality. Can anyone make any recommendations?
    Thanks

Gotta go with the Sennheiser Evolution series as well. Although I can't say that the actual mics they ships with are the best, they're not bad and I've had very few issues with the range and reception.
And if you're shooting solo, aside from the mics, make sure you pick up a 2 or 3 foot XLR cable so that you have enough hose to allow you to hook the receiver on to your belt. Beats clipping it to the handle strap.
You can also get a little adapter for the DVX that will allow you to mount the mics on the camera hot shoe on the top of the handle. I'm sure you can get these for just about and wireless you buy.

  • Computer turns off when importing CDs and converting files! HELP!

    Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble importing music from CDs and converting files on my computer. The computer just turns off when I do these things and I'm really stuck as to why. Can anyone help?

I just started having the same problem. I was able to import songs from 5 cds with no problem, but when I tried a few more my mac started shutting down about halfway through the import of the song. It doesn't matter how many songs I choose to import, it happens on the first one everytime. Did you find a fix for this?

  • Autocad, 3DS Max and the like.

A pre-thank you for your time and input.
So I just bought an iMac, 21.5 inch with 3.6 intel core i5, 8 GB ram and the ATI Radeon HD 5670. I have a few questions, some for curiosity's sake and some for how to move forward.
Essentially all the questions revolve around the need to use autocad and 3dsmax on my computer, and as of right now, in windows form. I understand that there is parallels, fusion, and boot camp, but I have heard conflicting information from the sales rep at the store and thought to ask before going forward.
Does windows in Bootcamp give me access to standard file types saved from Mac OS, ie. can I listen to my mp3s while in windows? Can i pull up a jpg or a pdf if the file was saved from mac?
Can the new Fusion or Parallels handle heavy programs like Max or Autocad or Photoshop?
In fusion, if I set the amount of cores and ram for windows to use, does that mean that Mac OS cannot use that, and if so, even when Fusion is shut down and windows turned off?
How much should I attribute to Windows for optimum speed?
I have a trial version of Fusion and I want to experiment with Max etc, but if I install and need to uninstall is that going to make a mess of the Mac, or is that pretty straight forward?
Lastly, assuming I didnt just make an *** of myself for buying this beautiful machine, should the configuration I bought really be suitable? I ask these questions mainly because the sales reps seemed to agree that it should be, but I then the last guy gave me doubts.
Thanks again, Justin. PS. Sorry for length, it's just that in my experience with posts, its better to be clear from the onset. I hope I was.

Yes to both. The Apple BootCamp Windows drivers allow read-access to the OSX partition from BootCamp Windows. For write access a third-party tool named MacDrive is needed.
Can the new Fusion or Parallels handle heavy programs like Max or Autocad or Photoshop?
    I don't have/use neither Mac nor Autocad, so I really can't say.
In fusion, if I set the amount of cores and ram for windows to use, does that mean that Mac OS cannot use that, and if so, even when Fusion is shut down and windows turned off?
As long as Fusion is running assigned cores and RAM cannot be used by OSX. When you shutdown Fusion the used cores and RAM are avaiable for OSX.
How much should I attribute to Windows for optimum speed?
At best use BootCamp which allows Windows to use all avaiable hardware resources.
With Fusion you have to find the balance between your Windows useage and your OSX useage.
I have a trial version of Fusion and I want to experiment with Max etc, but if I install and need to uninstall is that going to make a mess of the Mac, or is that pretty straight forward?
To my knowledge the Fusion package includes an uninstaller app to remove Fusion completely.
Before uninstalling Fusion you should use Fusion to delete/remove your Windows Virtual Machines.
Such Virtual Machines usually consists or merely two files which reside on your OSX partition and, in case of need, can even be deleted using the OSX Finder.
Lastly, assuming I didnt just make an *** of myself for buying this beautiful machine, should the configuration I bought really be suitable? I ask these questions mainly because the sales reps seemed to agree that it should be, but I then the last guy gave me doubts.
Like said, I don't use Max or AutoCad, but the Mac you have should be really good for both.
Although, there always will be a computer faster than the one you currently have.
Thanks again, Justin. PS. Sorry for length, it's just that in my experience with posts, its better to be clear from the onset. I hope I was.
Hope it helps clearing up. And no problem with lengthy posts

  • Viewing .(dot)max and .(dot)3ds files

    Hi,
just wondering if anyone knew of an application that would let me view and, potentially, modify files in the .max and .3DS format.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
    Cheers.....Scotty

A quick Google search of .3DS brought up this page:
    http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5659453
At appears you need Windows Vista or XP, but it also mentions that it's not supported on a Mac. Couldn't find any other app.

  • 3ds MAX 8 and Director MX 2004

need help with lingo code relating to this. I am creating a
w3d file of a level for use in a 3d game, and when I go to code the
other elements (the character and enemies), it comes up with a
truckload of errors. i had created a level as a test ( it was a w3d
file created in director), and it worked, but when i went to import
the new w3d file, the above problem happened. the character model
created in director wont fly around, as its a plane, and the new
level design doesn't like being used, even when i change the code.
if someone could help urgently, many thanks would be bestowed. if
you need the code, i will create a txt file and send it to
    you

hi I need some help! I have made a toy car with 3ds max and
    imported it to director.
What i what to do is when I press the letter "a "on the
keyboard for my car to accelerate. I can make it move forward or
backwards but am having trouble trying to save its previous X
location so that when I'm pressing "a" it will keep accelerating

  • Which iMac 27 upgrades for Autodesk Revit and 3ds Max

    Hi,
I am an architecture student and I'm about to purchase a iMac 27. I will be using bootcamp to run Revit and 3ds Max and was wondering what upgrades I should make (if any).
    512GB SSD or a 1TB fusion drive
    3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 or a 3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
    8GB, 16GB or 32GB
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5
Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks

    I don't have CS6...
    1) I would max out the video card. FCP X and Motion 5 uses the GPU over the CPU for processing power. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
    2) FCP X and Motion 5 will use all the ram you can throw at it. I have 16 GB of ram and both programs at times uses all 16 GB of ram. I really should bump up my ram to 32 GB. I would say 16 GB is the minimum for video.
    3) The processor would be last on my list. Computers are really fast even with an i5 processor. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
This is the iMac I bought last year:
    27" iMc mid-2011
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
2TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

  • 3D model plus material from 3Ds Max or Adobe 3D Toolkit import to Acrobat 3D

    Hello Forum
We have been looking through the forum but could not find the topic yet. Hence I am writing to maybe find an answer to our little issue. We are coming from the corrugated printing industry and attempt to provide our customers with additional 3D models in PDF for approval.
So far we have turned the keyline (aka folding pattern) into an accurate 3D model using 3Ds Max. Placing the artwork (logos, barcodes, text etc.) into the right position works as well in 3Ds Max. However when exporting from 3Ds Max and then 'Creating PDF from file' in Acrobat 3D, we lose the 'material', i.e. the artwork and just succeed in importing the 3D model. We have tried all format exports from 3Ds Max but cannot import the artwork. Do you have any idea?
Alternatively, we have tried to use Adobe 3D toolkit to create the 3D model but are not able to place the 'material' into the exact position we require in the 3D model. Maybe there is a better way?
Thank you for any help or suggestions.
    Ab.

    Hi Abraham,
A few short answers to your specific Max questions (better late than never, I hope):
    1. Is there a plug-in or special process to turn a 2D keyline (folding pattern) into a 3D model using 3Ds Max?
Sounds like this something that could be done using a basic spline. If you are new to 3DS Max, try looking into splines, as well as Compound Objects>Loft. The loft tool utilizes two elements; a loft path, usually just a line of some fashion, and the shape of loft, which can be any 2d shape drawin in max. Search for Loft object under Max help.
    2. What would be the best way to map the artwork belonging to the keyline onto the 3D model?
Mapping can be complex, however, there are some nice techniques to use given the time taken to learn. Baking textures would be my suggestion to you; a baked texture is essentially a 2d redering of your model which is created through Rendering>Render to Texture. This will render out a 2d baked map of your object, including lighting an environmental elements. Save as a.tga, and you can then import you 2d baked texture into other design progs and use it as a texture mapping template; allowing you to add design elements, details textures, etc. to specific areas of your model's texture. Once finished working with the texture design, save as a .tga, then re-import your modified .tga into Max via Utilities Tab>Asset Browser, apply your modified .tga to a material sample in the Material Editor, and apply to your model.
That's the basic procedure. For details, search 3DS Max Help for "Render to Texture" and "Backed Maps".
Hope that points you in the right direction,
    ~Chipley

  • Placed PNG images which are made in 3ds max are not shown correctly in Ilustrator

    Hello,
Why placed PNG images (renders) which are made in 3ds max (and then photoshoped) are not shown correctly in Ilustrator. Images appear very noise so you can't see almost a thing. the same pictures (renders) made in Revit appear ok.
Is there a solution to solve this issue?
    Thanks.

You would have to provide screenshots of how it looks in PS, including the channels visible. MAX may have embedded extra channels that throw off AI. And of course check whether your PNG is actually 8bit, not 16bit.

  • Director 11.5 with 3DS Max 2010

I haven't written a line of Lingo since version 6 of director, however, I am currently working a project that requires the use of the 3D capabilities director has that Flash just isn't powerful enough to handle. I need help with my shockwave file and I have found very little relative documentation on this, except for some based on older versions of Director. I import my scene into Direct just fine...all textures and lighting is intact...perfect.  I am able to connect lingo to models in the scene, however I am not able to connect to and attach lights and cameras already in the scene to an object (using addChild)...I can create and attach new cameras and lights just fine, but when I try to reference an existing camera or light created in 3ds max and imported with the 3D scene the camera or light will not respond...any ideas? Hints? I've been following the "Dean's Tutorial" however it seems maybe 11.5 has something I am missing? The Director help files are not too useful...no examples...any help is much appreciated

Ah., i was able to get this to work, but I had to reference lights and camera by number and not by name
    what I was using:
      p3Dmember = sprite(me.spriteNum).member
      pCharacter = p3Dmember.model("controlObj")
      myLightr = p3Dmember.light("light01")
      pCharacter.addChild(myLight,#preserveWorld)
    What actually works:
      p3Dmember = sprite(me.spriteNum).member
      pCharacter = p3Dmember.model("controlObj")
      myLightr = p3Dmember.light[1]
      pCharacter.addChild(myLight,#preserveWorld)
So we cannot reference scene lights and cameras by name if they are preexisting? However, we can reference models in the scene by name? Any reasoning to this?

  • 3ds Max importing to Final Cut Pro?

Is it possible to use a Windows 7 program through bootcamp such as 3ds max, and import a 3ds max composition into a mac program such as Final Cut for editing? For the msot part, I just want to be able to create something in Windows and export it into OS X for editing (or vise versa). How would I go about this? Thanks!

As long as you export an image sequence, for example, that you rendered in 3ds max,
and then load QT player, and convert to QT ProRes for example, you will have no problem
reading these rendered files in FCP xxx.
As for porting a max file into FCP, this is not possible.

  • 3DS Max On Parallels or Boot Camp?

    Hi,
I want to install 3DS Max and go back forth between 3DS max and other programs. I installed a 30 trail on Parallels and it goes really slow, I haven't even tried to render. On the other hand, if I install it on Boot Camp, I would have to go back and forth and it would be a pain. Would anyone know how get 3Ds Max to run better on Parallels or an easier solution than going back and forth from Boot Camp? Also, is it possible to connect an ethernet cable to PC to the mac and go back and forth?
    Thanks a lot!,
    Zevie

I would think you should at least give Boot Camp a test drive. The problem with either Parallels or Fusion is the sharing resources part. It's great for jumping back and forth but system resources can get stretched thin in a hurry.
I'm pretty sure that in Parallels your video performance is going to be a serious issue. In a virtualized environment like Parallels or Fusion this video performance is fine for Word, Excel, Acrobat etc., but doesn't come close in apps that require a big contribution from the video card.
If it's Vista that you loaded via Parallels, then check the Windows Experience Index that can tell you a lot about system performance.

  • 3ds Max crashes using Quadro 1000M card on battery

If I run 3ds Max 2012 on the Quadro 1000M card with the power adaptor plugged in it runs fine. If I unplug the power while the program is running, or start the program under battery power the program will run for a few seconds then freeze.
Running under the Intel graphics works fine, however the purpose of having a workstation class laptop is to take advantage of the inproved graphics option.
The W520 is listed as 3ds Max "certified" by Autodesk. I have all the latest Lenovo and Windows drivers, as well as the latest BIOS installed as of 1/10/2012.
Is anyone else having issues with applications crashing while using Quadro graphics on battery power?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hey Senorpablo,
    welcome to the forums
The driver version for your Quadro is at 8.17.12.7593 ? If not update it here >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS013693
And bios is at 1.34 ? The update is here >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018884
Since this only happens for this particular program, try reinstalling 3ds Max and when you reinstall; set your unit to diagnostic mode via msconfig before doing so.
at the same time check with the Autodesk forum, there might be other uses who has the Quadro 1000m on their system who is experiencing the same symptom or maybe a patch is available for this.
