Office 2013 Bug Report : Protecting sheets in Excel 2013 is useless.

Using Protecting sheets in Excel 2013 is useless , if you copy the files to another PC with 2007 office installed the sheets turn unprotected without asking for password, i have tried this in 4 PCs and same result.   regards

I'm sorry but I can't reproduce this issue.
I created a workbook with excel 2013, protected one worksheet, then moved it to another PC with excel 2007,the worksheet was still protected. Please refer to the screenshot below.

  • Office 2013 BUG report: undesirable components (and various hijacks) are installed against user's will and cannot be removed

Installing Office 2013 Pro Plus RTM x64 on a fresh Windows 8 Pro WMC system.
Used Custom setup procedure to install only the desired software, i.e. unchecking most of the checkboxes.
After setup, a lot of undesirable software got nevertheless installed although it was specifically UNCHECKED at setup time, e.g. "Office Themes", "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation support", "Compare Diagnostics blahblah" + a bunch of outdated truetype
    fonts.
No matter how many times we run again the "Change" setup from Windows' "Programs and Features" and uncheck these components, the setup routine does NOT uninstall them, with or without reboot etc. Basically, the Add/Remove function of the setup has NO EFFECT.
The setup also installs (offering no choice or notice to the users) a lot of undesirable bloatware e.g. some "Office Upload Center", "Spreadsheet Compare" etc. and several tasks (Office 2013 Sync-something stuff) & services & explorer hijacks (a greyed-out
"Skydrive Pro", what the...) AGAINST the user's will or consent.
These unwanted apps and hijacks seemingly cannot be uninstalled, not even kept from running and reenabling itself - except if killing the tasks using the Task Manager, then deleting (!) the files from their respective folders, in addition to editing the
registry to get rid of all this stuff. Of course the crap gets reinstalled/reenabled with any further launch of the office setup...
Reminds me a lot of bad practices by malicious software. :|
Office techs and engineers, PLEASE don't promise a customized setup option if it's for it to be snake oil... And don't offer a post-setup "Add/remove" or "Change" routine that has absolutely no effect whatsoever... And don't install unneeded/undesirable
useless features as tasks and hijacks that cannot be killed or get rid of...
Or at least please mention explicitely that you know better than users themselves, what they want and need and decide... :)
As a sidenote, the same issues were present with Office 2010 Pro Plus SP1 - Sharepoint stuff and office themes and all that jazz was already installed even when deliberately left unchecked, and could never be uninstalled afterwards.

    Hi,
First, I want to confirm with you that whether you install Office via MSI or Click to Run.
Only volume-licensed versions of Click-to-Run installations can be customized using the Click-to-Run Admin Tool. Retail versions of Click-to-Run, however, do not support the use of the Admin
Tool or provide any user interface based customizations to the product. These versions, for example, do not allow the user to choose what applications or features to not install or even the location of the installation files.
If you used MSI installation, then check to see the steps in the link below:

  • Excel 2013 hangs while trying to open a file from network share

    Hi,
I am having issue opening excel file from a network share. it happens randomly, the file opens and hangs abruptly. Nothing happens after that ( we can only move the cursor), if we click on the excel sheet we get a beep sound. after i kill the excel process
and open it again ,it works fine.
Where did the member use the Excel file? Local disk, SharePoint, File server, or network shared disk?
Network shared file and sometime locally
Does the issue occur in the special file or every file?
it happens randomly and the whole excel freezes. i have to kill the excel session.
Which Office version is the file created? Excel 2013 or early? If it is XLS format, please try to convert to XLSX to test.
Network file server has office 2010 and the user is trying to open it in excel 2013
Does the file have some macros?
Yes, they have macros in some files
Does the issue occur recently? If it is, have you installed some programs or update before you encountered it?
           it happened before too.
Do you get some error message when Excel crashed?
Yeah. Attaching the error message from event viewer. We get file corrupt errors and below too.

  • Power View not showing on opening workbook in Excel 2013

When I re-open an Excel 2013 SP1 workbook with a Power View sheet, the Power View is coming up as disabled. To get it back, I have to insert a new Power View sheet. This then starts up PV and the sheet is shown properly.
Does anyone know how to get PV to show on start-up so that I don't have to insert a new PV sheet each time?
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Based on my research, I think this issue is caused by having turned off the Power View add-in from Excel Options. To troubleshoot this issue, we can refer to the following steps:
Set the Formula bar as visible in your ribbon
Enable add-ins of power view, please go to  File>Options>Add-Ins
In the Manage box, click the drop-down arrow > COM Add-ins > Go.
Check the Power View check box > OK.
If this issue still exists, please try to repair Office in Control panel>Program and features>Right click Office 2013 and repair.
The following document about Create a Power View sheet in Excel 2013 is for your reference:

  • .xlsm File use from Excel 2013 64bit/Win7 64bit to Excel 2013 32bit/Win8.1 64bit - Component Removed (not API related)

    Work Environment:  Excel 2013 64bit/Win7 64bit
    Home Environment: Excel 2013 32bit/Win8.1 64bit (1 desktop and 1 laptop)
I am developing an an .xlsm file at work (with Lists and a single form with controls linked to a worksheet ControlSource). It works and saves all day long just fine in my work environment. I save the file to either a USB drive (or DropBox - makes no difference)
and then open the file on my home computer. I can open the file the first time with no problem and with no error messages. But then when I try to save the file Excel 2013 32bit most often tells me that it has removed a component. But it doesn't tell which
component it has removed. After that, if I close the file and try to reopen it, it won't reopen. I get a series of error message: [1] file path errors (error 75) [2] Excel has stopped working errors. [3] Excel hasn't enough memory to complete the operation,
[4] Excel will close. So I click the close button on the last error message and Excel disappears. I say disappears, because its not really gone. Mind you, its not listed in the Task Manager at this point. But, if I then click the Windows Taskbar icon to start
Excel, Excel will sometimes automatically open up with the file that I was trying to open before, already up and running, i.e. I do not select the file to open it - it just appears. Other time Excel just repeats the series of error messages noted above.
The strange part is, once this file has been corrupted, I can still take it back to my work environment, fire it up on my work computer, and it works just fine. No error messages, no saving problems.
I have totally uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2013 (HUP Click to Run) on both my home computers and it makes no difference.
I can say though, this is driving me nuts. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?
    phillfri

I think I solved the issue.
Step 1: Moved all my code from the Worksheet_Open event to the Auto_Open Macro.
Result: File would open from inside Excel but when opening by clicking on the file in Windows explorer I would get the error msg "There was a problem sending a command to the program."
Step 2: Apply FixIt 20074. Note that to get this FixIt to work in Windows 8.1 you MUST save the FixIt file to your desktop and run it from there. If you follow the instructions on the FixIt page - download and run - you will get the error msg "This Fixit
does not apply because the computer does not have the expected software (Excel.exe)."
Excel 2013 definitely seems to have some bugs when starting a macro enabled file. I have seen other comments on the internet about the Excel workbook_open event actually failing to run all the VBA commands that are put into it.
    Environments:
    [1] Home: Microsoft HUP Click-n-Run Office Professional 2013; Windows 8.1, 64 bit; Excel 2013, 32 bit.
[2] Work: Enterprise Microsoft Office Professional 2013; Windows 7, 64 bit; Excel 2013, 64 bit.

  • PowerView report not visible in Excel web App

Created a report using PowerView in Excel 2013 but it is not visible when i am viewing in Excel Web App?
Is there any settings we need to enable?
    Kindly suggest.

Good question. This is something that's really hard to find an answer to in the docs. But as far as I can tell, you need SQL 2012 sp1 Enterprise or BI edition. Also, SSRS will have to be installed and configured in SharePoint integrated mode. Also, Excel
services will need to be configured to be used, not Excel Web apps.
For me, part of the confusion comes from the fact that there are actually several versions of Power View, and the docs are not always clear which version they're referring to, so my answer might be wrong.

  • Excel 2013 Standalone - Power Pivot Plug-in not visible or available for activation

    Dear Microsoft Team
According to your blog, the Excel 2013 standalone SKUs have now been updated to include Power Pivot and Power View.  (follow this link: http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_microsoft_excel_support_team_blog/archive/2013/02/27/unable-to-use-excel-2010-powerpivot-workbooks-in-excel-2013.aspx)
I've just bought Excel 2013 standalone (non-commercial, SKU AAA-01350) from the MS Store and cannot see either Power Pivot or Power View among the list of the COM Add-ins available. The corresponding sections don't appear in the Excel ribbon.
Are you aware of any glitches in the Office 2013 installation logic that might have caused such a problem? My PC runs Windows 8 (32-bit), with both Office 2010 and Excel 2013 Standalone installed.

    Hi Ron
Thanks for your prompt reply. Unfortunately, that didn't make much difference. I had a dialog shown to me reading the following:
Update for Microsoft Excel 2013 (KB2817425): There are no products affected by this package installed on this system.
I've since done some digging around and there seem to be other accounts of the newly updated Excel 2013 Standalone not installing Power Pivot. Here is the link (scroll all the way down, to the most recent comments):

  • Exclude Excel 2013 interop from Lync 2013 updates

Is it possible to Exclude Excel 2013 interop from Lync 2013 updates? We have Excel 2010 installed and have custom COM applications that use Excel 2010 interop to automate it. When Lync 2013 is installed/updated it installs Excel 2013 interop and causes
the COM application to not recognize the Excel 2010 interop without manually deleting the Excel 2013 interop from the registry.

When you run setup.exe from Office 2013 installation media, you can customize installation and make Excel 201 not available to install.

  • Excel 2013 (pro plus) extermely slow with sheets with more than 100 checkboxes

I have a customer with Excel 2013 (pro plus).
They use sheets with more than 100 checkboxes in it.
The sheet is extremly slow to display. When a user starts scrolling down, the checkboxes appear very slowly, one by one.
It happens with all users, on both x86 and 64bits Windows 8 PC's and Office clients (32b & 64b).
    Anyone any idea?

    Hi R.Nieraeth,
Could you please let us know what exactly these checkbox was used for ? Any formulas depend on these checkbox? Or any VBA code in this excel file? If so, you may need to check your formulas or the VBA code.
In addition, does this issue happen only on excel 2013? You can try to disable hardware graphics acceleration: Click
File, and then click Options. In the Advanced group, click to select the
Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box. Click ok.

  • Excel 2013 (or 2010) wont recover/repair excel files with sheets with invalid names

    Hi All
I have a situation where some legacy software (Crystal Reports) have exported to Excel some problematic workbooks in .xls (in 5.0/95) format. These workbooks have an invalid worksheet name which I have discovered is a known problem with Legacy
    Crystal Reports.
In Office 2003 the error I get is:
"Errors were detected in 'example.xls'" but Microsoft Office Excel was able to open the file by makling the repairs listed below. renamed invalid sheet name".
That's fine because the spreadsheet then opens with the worksheet renamed to "Recovered_Sheet1" and all the expected data inside.
The problem arises because we have 2013 (not 2003). in 2013 I get:
"We found a problem with some content in 'example.xls'. Do you want to try and recover as much as we can? If you trust the source of this workbook click Yes"
If I click yes then the I get:
"Excel was unable to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content. Excel recovered your formulas and cell values, but some data may have been lost."
I then get a workbook with 2 sheets (unknownsheet1 and unknownsheet2) and there is no data. The issue would be no problem if 2013 could recover the data.
Is there a way in which I can get 2013 to open/recover these workbooks like 2003 manages to do? To test I have turned off all trust centre features etc. Failing that, could I use powershell or something else to get into a closed excel file and rename the
    worksheet?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Thomas

    Hi,
As you said the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook format file is a very old format, it might be has some unexpected compatibility issues with new Excel version. I recommend you convert the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook to a new Excel format, like XLSX.
As a workaround, please try to copy the data from Excel 2003 to a Excel 2013/2010 file. It would help us using there data.
Then, based on the error message, we might try the below method:
Install the Visual Basic component in Office 2013/2010
Control Panel > Programs > select Microsoft Office 2013/2010 and click on Change > Add or Remove Programs > at the bottom of the list click on the plus next to Office Shared Features > select Visual Basic for Applications > I right
clicked and chose Run from My computer > Continue

  • SAP Office Integration Excel 2013 problem - dummy window pops up with inplace

Hi experts all around the globe,
we are facing a strange problem by some of our users since they have installed Excel 2013 on their PCs. An annoying Excel sheet pops up while generating an excel file in the background.
They are working with several Y (or Z if you like it better so) transactions, and create multiple Excel files (Excel.Sheet.8 -> .xls) in the background. The programs are using Office Integration (interfaces I_OI_CONTAINER_CONTROL and I_OI_DOCUMENT_PROXY) to create the files.
Method OPEN_DOCUMENT is called with the parameter OPEN_INPLACE, modified, and then closed with the CLOSE_DOCUMENT method, then saved with SAVE_DOCUMENT_TO_URL. The document gets only assigned to a dummy container, this means under normal circumstances the user shouldn't see anything - the file gets created, modified and stored in the background - end of the story. The programs are like 10 years old, and have been doing good since then.
Now some of our users reported, that they have an issue when generating Excel files with those programs. We have investigated / debugged, and here is the thing: in several cases when the method OPEN_DOCUMENT is called, an empty worksheet pops up (see attached screenshot). It also gets in focus, and then in 1 sec is it closing again (as the CLOSE_DOCUMENT is called). This is really annoying when the user has to generate hundreds of Excel sheets (it is quite often the case). The window gets opened and closed with every single file that gets created.
We have tried to identify the problem, but it is user independent, the SAP GUI, Office and Windows versions seem to be all the same - though it appears by some users. The most of us work with SAP GUI 730 Patch level 4, but upgrade to Patch level 9 has also not solved the problem. We have found the notes 1908528 and 1804535. They address similar problems but not exactly the same. We think it has something to do with incompatibility of the releases, or simply an Office / SAP setting we could not think of.
Has someone encountered the same? Any ideas?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Boldi

    Hello Daniel,
thank you very much for your reply, it is really appreciated.
We have SAP GUI 7.30 Version 7300.3.9.1084 Build 1496147 Patch Level 9 on the test machine. This one should be the latest available version, am I right?
The issue is a little bit different from the ones described in the SAP notes you suggested. The data is getting "correctly" displayed inplace, but Excel is also getting called up in the same time, and an additional emtpy sheet is displayed, which gets in the focus, disturbing the user. It is just like described in the SAP notes 1425448 and 1567380
To 1425448 (Solution Point 2 below): this is our standard setting, and it does not help us.
To 1567380 (Prerequisites): there is no macro in our sheet.
We could reproduce the issue with the standard report SAPRDEMO_SPREADSHEET_INTERFACE (this is the one suggested in SAP note 1908528 - "Verifying that Excel inplace functionality is working correctly"). The SAP GUI overtakes the focus after a while, as described in the SAP note 1567380, but the empty sheet is active at first, and it is a little bit more than annoying.
How is it on your side, could you please run the standard report (EXCEL, checkbox for inplace set, then Enter) to confirm that the problem exists?
Thanks a lot in advance and have a nice day!
    Boldi

  • Why does data validation not disappear immediately on protected sheet, bug?

I have provided a link to a workbook.
Cell A1 contains data validation. The macro contains one sub that removes the data validation from Cell A1. However, the data validation won't be removed until you first run the macro and then click on another cell and then click on A1 again.
However, if the sheet was not protected, data validation would get removed immediately by the macro, without the need to navigate to a different cell.
Why is it like this? Is this a bug?
Workbook with data validation in A1 of protected sheet and a macro to remove it

    Hi JP3O,
Base on my test in Office professional Plus 2013 (15.0.4569.1506), it works fine.
    Check the worksheet is protected
Select A1, the dropdown icon will display
Run/Debug the macro, the dropdown icon will be disappeared.
What’s the version of your Office? Could you reproduce that issue in other machine?

  • Excel 2013 BeforeRightClick Event fails on Windows 8.1 Tablet (it's an Excel 2013 tablet touch screen interface bug)

I have developed customized table context menus in an Excel 2013 workbook on my Laptop. They work just fine on my laptop and my work desktop. But when I try to run them on my tablet PC the Worksheet_BeforeRightClick event in Excel 2013 never fires. Other
worksheet events appear to work okay. I have fully reinstalled Office 2013 Pro and that does not make any difference.
I have read other comments regarding this same problem going back to 2013, but have never seen Microsoft respond to this issue. Nor have I been able to find a resolution. Has anyone else run into this and found a solution?
Additional Discoveries: Testing on my tablet shows that adding one custom CommandBarButton to either the top or the bottom of the default "List Range Popup" context menu causes the Worksheet_BeforeRightClick event to fail.  The basic context
menu commands still show up, but the default dropdown button for additional context menu commands disappears. The event is perhaps firing, but any customized code for the context menu is not being handled properly by Excel. This does appear to be a bug and
not a question of coding error. Perhaps someone else with a tablet PC running WIndows 8.1 could test this.
    Based on comments
here this bug was introduced in Excel 2013 because others find the problem does not exist when using Excel 2010 on a tablet PC. Note that all the commenters on the linked thread that are experiencing this problem are using tablet PCs.
Update 3-13-15: I stand corrected. The Worksheet_BeforeRightClick does work on Excel 2013 Windows 8.1 tablets. I happen to own an Asus VivoTab Note 8, which comes with a Wacom stylus. If I use the Wacom sylus to right click on an Excel 2013 worksheet cell,
the Worksheet_BeforeRightClick event fires and modified context menu code runs just fine. But the code will not run if one uses their finger to right click a worksheet cell. This explains why this problem only shows up on tablet PCs. So the "bug"
introduced in Excel 2013 is a general user touch screen interface bug and not an Excel events programming bug.
Update 3-21-15: Switched to a  Toshiba Protege laptop with touch screen. Same issue with finger touch screen interface on the Toshiba touch screen as with the Asus VivoTab touch screen.
Laptop: Toshiba Protege (with touch screen), Windows 8.1 64bit and MSOffice 2013 Pro 32bit
Tablet: Asus VivoTab Note 8, Windows 8.1 32bit and MSOffice 2013 Pro 32 bit
Desktop: Generic, Windows 7 64bit and MSOffice 2013 Pro 64bit

    Hello Phil,
Command bars were deprecated and shouldn't be used any longer. Instead, you need to use the Fluent UI (aka Ribbon UI) instead. You can read more about the new UI in the following series of articles in MSDN:
Customizing Context Menus in Office 2010
Customizing the 2007 Office Fluent Ribbon for Developers (Part 1 of 3)
Customizing the 2007 Office Fluent Ribbon for Developers (Part 2 of 3)
Customizing the 2007 Office Fluent Ribbon for Developers (Part 3 of 3)
As a workaround you can add a custom control to the context
menu with the getEnabled or getVisible callback which will be invoked before the context menu is shown.
