Office for IMac

I am moving from MS Windows based and going to Apple products and operating systems. I know nothing about Apple or the operating systems yet. I am buying an IMac 27". I assume what I am getting on the IMac is OSX v. 10.9.4. All I have currently - and everyone I work with, is MS Office related docs, power point, e-mail, etc. I am looking for a solution to be able to open, edit, send, MS Docs, Power Point, etc... without having dual MS and OSX operating systems. One person says MS Office 2013 and another says Office 365 (Office for Mac 2011) as you can't run MS Office 2013 without the dual operating systems. I don't know what is accurate and am looking for some expert assistance. What is the best solution that I can simply load up and it works, without having to load another operating system - and works "out of the box" - as soon as it is installed... with the IMac I am buying? Thanks :-)

Good question. According to Microsoft's site, Office 365 is feature compatible with Office 2013 for Windows, and is the current suggested upgrade for Office 2011 users. I haven't looked at it closely (or even in a mildly interested way) to see if Office 365 is really all that different from Office 2011.
I did finally find out why the Mac version always lags so far behind the Windows versions (though it's never been more than 6 months before).
1) Some years back, Bill Gates himself went to the MS Mac Division and told the programmers in no uncertain terms to "Stop it!". This was in regards to the fact, at the time, the Mac division was putting great new features into the Mac release of Office the Windows version didn't have. Bill told them any new features would always be in the Windows version first. Yeah, great business thinking there, Bill. Quash innovation in your own company.
2) But the main reason is that the Mac version isn't simply a port of the Windows version. All new features have to be written from scratch to match what's been added to the current Windows version. Apparently, the Mac group is kept in the dark until the Windows version is released. No excuse for MS not to have the two Office programming groups working in parallel so the new versions are ready at roughly the same time.

  • Problems installing Microsoft Office for iMac

I am trying to install the (free) trial version of MS Office Suite for my iMac. Even though I've closed all other programs, I get a warning window saying that the install can't be completed because Safari is open, which it isn't. The installer prohibits me from being able to logoff or shutdown through the Apple menu, I have to do a hard restart.  I dragged the download into the trash folder and re-downloaded it and I got the same problem when I tried to install.
    A little help?

You don't use your Apple ID or its password to install anything on your Mac. You use the admin account's name and password.
Use the name and password you last entered when resetting them. The "name" you use is not the short name of the admin account folder.
For example. If you create an admin account of John Smith, the short name given to that account's folder will be johnsmith. So when an app requests an admin name and password to install something, the admin name you enter is John Smith, not johnsmith.

  • Before I transfer files from my PC to the new imac should I load office for Mac and parallees? Will this mean I have to open the new account on my imac first and thus have two user accounts when I transfer the PC? I would prefer to only have one account.

IIt was in my mind to load office then transfer. After to load paralels and transfer my windows system. I have a new copy of office for Mac plus paralels PC to Mac transfer version 8. As this is my first mac (I have ipads and iphones) I am unsure of what to do. Also to confuse matters I use a windows laptop as my sync machine for the phones and ipads (i do have a cloud account with backup) can I transfer both machines to my new imac? I will have a 1tb fusion drive + 2tb time capsule although I only have less than 400GB of data on both machines. Hope this is not too confusing for everyone but I am looking forward to sorting this mess out by just using the one machine.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

I Have office for mac home and business 2011, can you install on both users on one iMac?

That's often a permissions problem. Try launching Disk Utility and running the Repair Permissions. That may fix the problem. Also confirm that the Office 2011 folder is in the Applications folder at the root of the hard drive, not a folder within your wife's Home folder.
If that doesn't help. post back with further details; your version of Mac OS X, whether you installed Office via a user account with admin privileges or not, and what happens when you try and launch Office from your account including error messages if any.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac Freezing & Microsoft Office for Mac

I took my 7 day old iMac back to the store I purchased from. After two days of solid testing, the techs there were unable to make my machine freeze or crash. This is after I experienced either a freeze or completely black screen/reboot every 2 to 5 minutes.
I brought the machine back to my office, fired it up and you guessed it...it froze. Here's the thing...the only software open was Microsoft's Entourage.
Yeah, I know...seems to go against all things good to have to load Microsoft products on a Mac, but my clients all use Office.
I uninstalled Entourage and so far so good...no crashing or freezing or black screens or anything.
I'm keeping a log of the software I have open for the next few days just in case the freezing happens again. That way, I'll know exactly what I have open at the time of the failure.
So I'm wondering if anyone else with a freezing iMac has Office 2004 loaded and could this perhaps be the culprit?

    Hi Bee,
Thanks for the welcome. My original post about my iMac problems are over in the Freezing iMac thread. After talking with AppleCare, I decided to take my new machine back to the store I bought it. They are what I think called a boutique Mac store. Anyway, they have a 7 day return policy...get all your money back.
I was so frustrated with the freezing, crashing, black screens, I went in with the intent of returning it for a refund. This small neighborhood store has been averaging selling 3 iMacs a week for since these Alum ones were released. Mine is the only one they have heard of with these issues. They were mystified and were really curious about this problem.
Anyway, I uninstalled the trial software before installing my copy of Microsoft Office. So even though your suggestion is very thoughtful and helpful, it doesn't apply to my machine.
I'm going to continue to monitor and record what I'm doing, although if I have many more unproductive days due to this machine, I will simply have to return it. As I've posted before, I'm self-employed...no workey, no eatey.
I was just wondering since Office for Mac 2004 was written as universal and not specifically for Intel Macs, could they be the culprit...although it looks like the problem people are having is pretty wide and so most likely the software is not the problem. Just trying to grasp for an answer...

will microsoft office for mac 2004 transfer from my emac running 10.4.11 to the new iMac running mountain lion using migration assistant?

Microsoft Office 2004 will not work on any Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion. You will need to upgrade to Office 2011, buy the less expensive iWork apps from the App Store or use a free office clone like OpenOffice or NeoOffice.

I am trying to install office for mac 2011 on my new imac which I have already installed parallels and windows 7.  On inserting the office dvd the computer defaults to windows.  Parallels support suggested disabling the dvd drive in parallels.  I have tried this but still the computer wants to open the exe file with windows.  Any ideas please?

  • Will Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 work on my iMac with Mountain Lion OS?

Help!  I have downloaded Mountain Lion (10.8.4) on my iMac. Now I can't open or use files that contained labels I made with Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 because Mountain Lion does not support Power PC and Microsoft Excel.  If I purchase and download Office for Mac 2011, will it allow me to continue using these label files?  If not, how can I get a database for my iMac that will enable me to create labels and catalogues?

Thanks, Niel.  I'm glad to know purchasing the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 will enable me to retrieve and use my "ancient" database label files.  I did try to get OpenOffice, but my computer says "'OpenOffice' can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" and my "security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers."  How can I do this?  I really don't know about the inner workings of my computer!

My iMac has MS Office for mac 2011 and I want to get it onto my iPad 4. How?

    This is not possible.
Apps for the Mac are for Mac conputers only running Mac OS X only. iDevices use Apple's mobile OS iOS. They are not cross compatible OSes.
You would have to use the App Store on your iPad to see if Microsoft has done a scaled down iOS version of Microsoft office for Apple iDevices. I am not sure if they have or not.
The only Microsoft-like office apps for your iPad that are on The App Store for your iPad is Apple's own Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
    Good Luck.

  • I want to cry - I cannot load Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 on my new Imac.

I have tried three times without success.
I did trial the Microsoft Office for a month and the instructions were to remove all components of the previously loaded 30-day free trial program prior to installing the purchased software. I think I have done this but I am not sure. I wanted to phone and speak with someone but there is no phone number I can call.
Where are they all? Who can I speak with?
    Frustated granny.

Did the MS Office free trial have an option to uninstall? Some software comes with an uninstall option, even though in Macs usually just dragging the application in question to the Trash is sufficient.
Where did you obtain the free trial version from to begin with? Although it sounds counterintuitive, "sometimes" after a user "partially" uninstalls a program manually, they may have to reinstall it (in your case "it" would be the free trial version) and then choose the uninstall option.
I'm just throwing this out there. I've had no recent experience with the free trial version of MS Office.

  • I downloaded Office for Mac 2011, and almost immediately my Yahoo email stopped working, most images were disabled throughout my internet sites, and my bank site reported that I was using a "new computer," which is not true. How can I get my email to work

I have an iMac version 10.6.8/2.66 GHz Intel Processor and 4 GB memory, with Safari 5.1.10. I had used Office for Mac 2008 but had to upgrade for work. The download (from Amazon) went swiftly, but when I started Word, it did not function too well. Then about an hour later I noticed that my Yahoo email site stopped working, it lost all images and the text just jumbled up on the left side of the screen. No amount of emptying caches or resets/quits/restarts did anything. I called the Internet support, and they just said it was my iMac that had the problem. I have been reduced to using MacMail as my email, but this is tenuous, as my Yahoo account keeps holding things up and constantly asking me for my password (and sometimes it does not accept it). How can I get my computer back?

The path may be long and tedious, grasshopper.
Actually, the download of Office 2011 for Mac probably was not legal and may have contained bugs or other things meant to make it unstable, or invite a host of issues. The usual path would be Office 2011 for Mac on DVD so you could reinstall it and add the extras from the disc as needed; or fix the installation later on. The updates for security were downloads from Microsoft servers. You'd need a legitmate version with pass code.
Options for Mac and office-like application suites include Libre Office, NeoOffice, and these run free. The latter supports up to Mavericks. 10.9.1 now. They have a word, excel, and other parts a lot like the real office.
If you have a working clone of the system prior to installing the Office 2011 for Mac download and any subsequent and perhaps unseen extras, you could revert to it simply by restarting the computer from the clone, where it resides in externally enclosed self-powered hard disk drive, of a type known to support OS X clones... With ports to help work with most modern Macs. FireWire + USB. Then, clone it back w/ carbon copy cloner.
Short of that, perhaps someone will see your post and offer some indepth method of hunting down bugs via use of Console logs; and maybe booting into Terminal utility to use unix code. It can be rather involved. Maybe Linc Davis will offer some detailed reply that will invite you to read carefully and try it.
I've given up using computers long ago.
A pet raven has been taught to write this.
    Good luck & happy computing!
