Operating temps and gaming FPS

I just purchased the new Macbook Pro non-retina version with an upgraded 2.7ghz CPU. I use this macbook for Graphic Design programs from Adobe as well as occasional gaming. I downloaded a temperature gauge as an app so I have an indication as to how hot the cpu is getting while gaming. It seems that the cpu was reaching temperatures of around 90c while running Starcraft II and occasionally the FPS would drop from a steady 59fps to 29fps. What is the issue for my frames going down like that? And are those temperatures normal?

If you bought a model of MacBook Pro without the additional ATI or Nvida video graphics, then your only using the low end Intel HD 3000 or 4000 processor run graphics and if your CPU over heats there is built in throttling to reduce the load and thus the heat.
If you do have the higher end graphics, then head to Energy Saver and use high performance graphics, this will avoid the CPU graphics.
Run a Hardware check #3 here and if it says anything write it down and take it in for service.
It's normal for the machine to heat up while gaming, but it seems to be maxing out at near 200º F thus the CPU throttling and frame rate drop for some reason.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

  • Combining 60 fps and 24 fps footage in one project

I've got a unique and confusing problem. I am trying to make a video that has a small amount of 60 fps played back at normal speed, soap opera effect and all, placed inside of a normal 23.976 fps project (full of primarily 23.976 fps footage).
I can hear you asking "why on Earth would you want to do such a thing?!" The video project is actually designed to be an explanation and demonstration of why and how higher frame rates look the way they do, a sort of explainer on how our eyes and brains process them, etc., so I need a bit of shiny soap opera stuff, just not the whole vid, because yuck.
The final destination for this project is YouTube, which now offers 60 fps uploads, so my final export would be at 60fps. If I shoot the rest of my stuff at 23.976, how can I combine the two so the normal stuff looks normal in a 60 fps export, and the 60 fps stiff looks shiny? If I drop 23.976 into a 60 fps project/export, won't it get choppy as hell in the final export?
I've got access to PP and AE CS6 and/or CC to get the job done.

  • Mac Pro operating temps

    hello,
i just got home form college for break. i store my mac pro in the basement at home. its very very cold down there. im afraid to run the machine form cold. i realize that apple says operation temp is 50 degrees min. at the moment its 61 here. is it ok to run my machine w/o putting too much stress? bc i realize as soon as i turn on the tem goes to 80+ and 99~ inside. is this healthy? please let me know.
    God Bless
    merry christmas

Basically you need to have the COMPUTER at 50 or above. It's mainly to keep the condensation from forming and shorting something out or the hardware inside from expanding too fast and breaking/cracking from heating up too quick.
It's the worst case scenario but why take the chance. It mainly depends on the humidity. If your in a dry State then not too big an issue but if your in the NW or SE then could be a problem.
Next time when you first get home just bring the computer upstairs and by the time you get things situated it should have warmed up enough.
    Enjoy your stay....

  • Another temp question on MBPr 15...211F peak operating temp?

Hello, I know this is a somewhat redundant question, but my own situation is slightly different from other situations.
I purchased a MBPr a few days ago (11,3 with the 2.5 i7 quad.) This is my fourth MBP. All have ran hot as I realize the aluminum casing works differently than a plastic casing, but this particular one runs a bit hotter than the 2011 8,2 (2.3 GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 SSD, 1 GB GPU, OS X Mavericks) it replaced, and the fans wait for higher temperatures to ramp up. The CPU die temp can elevate to a peak of 211F under max load (measured with iStat Menus, which I assume is not totally accurate), and the fans themselves wait until a higher temp to ramp up compared to my previous computers. By peak load I mean running statistical software to crunch a large dataset for an extended period that maxes the CPU and has pushed every Mac I have ever owned above 200F for brief periods. The difference is that the other Macs were right around 200-204F, where as this rMBP is 210-211.
Under moderate load, it maintains a reasonably cool working temp of 110-150F depending what I am doing, which is more or less the same as my previous model. It manages to do this with much lower fan speeds, which I assume is due to the more efficient design of the Retina models. The outer casing remains cooler than my previous model. Functionally this computer is fantastic, and it is not throttling CPU performance at these higher temps.
The Apple Store is quite a drive, and Apple Tech Support told me they are unable to tell me if this is or is not within normal operating temps, which is rather frustrating as I am 80% sure this is not a problem at all. But given this is a $3,000 investment, I prefer to ask others.
So I ask you, is this something worth being concerned about, or is this within acceptable operating parameters? TIA.

I cannot give you a definitive answer but be aware that there is a thermal protection circuit that will shut down the MBP before it commits Hari Kari.

I am surprised that the Apple support would not commit to an answer.  If I were in your position, I would ask what is the thermal shut down temperature for your model MBP.  I would think they should be able to answer that question.
    Ciao.

  • Normal operating temp

    Hi all,
Quick question. What's the normal operating temp of a Powerbook G4 (I believe I have the FW 800 model) after it's been running for a while? Mine gets particularly hot (140 F according to the SysStat widget) and it's just occuring to me that perhaps my fan is broken. Is there anyway I can tell if the fan is broken? Thanks.

    Hi Elizabeth..
You can do the hardware check if you think that your fan is too laud. But 140F is completly normal if you PB is working hard. I also posted similar post here when I got my PB, but then some guy wrote that it's normal when the machine is used for long time and with high load. He also wrote that Apple somewhere claims that it will never go over 143F or something like that.... anyways when I monitored mine it realy didn't exceed that number he wrote... so you dont have to worry... I use my PB for music production (at least trying to make someting and it is constantly hot and also sometimes in bad ventilated places and in a year of useage I never had a single problem with it.

  • Temp and bios question

Okay, new to the board and I must say I am impressed. Not a lot of hating goin on.
    First the details:
    MSI 875P NEO-FISR mobo bios v3.5
    Intel P4 2.8 800fsb - Northwood not overclocked- stock HS/Fan
    ATI Radeon X800Pro
    Kingston DDR400- 2x512
Lite-on CD RW / DVD RW
    Samsung 120GB SATA HDD 7200rpm
    Win2K SP4
    Aspire X-Alien case with 6 80mm fans - 420w PSU
Hopefully thats enough info...anyway my problem is the temp on my CPU has suddenly went up by almost 20 degrees C. Im wondering if it is the latest BIOS. I had updated every time from 3.1 up to 3.3 and I decided to not put on 3.4 just out of laziness. I did update to 3.5
Before my temps would run 28-29C idle and after serious gaming it might go up to 45C. the other day I noticed it was idle at 49C and gaming would jump to 63-64C. I have CoreCenter set to shutdown at 65C because I don't trust it. Nothing has really changed other than the BIOS and a newer version of CoreCenter. I blew off HS last night, but no change...it really was not dusty, only had system for few months now...My X800 runs in same area as always, so I dont think it is an ambient temp problem. I also uninstalled CoreCenter and installed an older version, but no change.
I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Could it be the temps were wrong before, and they have been fixed with a subsequent BIOS?
Could be they are wrong now?
I'm thinking of buying a Zalman HS/Fan, but it doesnt make sense that what was running really cool before is now running hot with same HS/Fan...so Im not sure if I NEED to buy a new HS/Fan or wait to see if next BIOS fixes problem.
CoreCenter is only program I have used so far, so I will try SpeedFan when I get home and post the results of that tonite or tomorrow, I wanted to post this to see if there might be some other having same problem, or another possible fix. I was afraid to flash BIOS back to previous version...I was not sure what would happen. Is this possible? Should I try it and are there any "gotchas" in doing that?
thanks for any information you have.

okay, so I disabled CoreCenter and installed Speedfan using Danny's guide. SpeedFan has actually dropped the temps from idle at 49C to 41C and gaming gets up to about 62 C still...one interesting thing is CoreCenter would only allow my fan at max speed to just under 4,000 RPM (if I remember correctly) and SpeedFan on max is over 5400 RPM which I am thinking is responsible for the 8 degree drop in idle temp.
With all the info you guys have provided like the water cooled system running same temp, Im thinking it is the BIOS. Why would a water cooled system run same temp as a stock HSF setup, even if the BIOS update bumped the temps up 20 degrees, I would think the WC system would still be running cooler, like 38-39C compared to our 45-46C.
Anyway, Im thinking Im going to hold off on purchasing an aftermarket HSF and see what the next BIOS brings. I feel comfortable that the bios is throwing the temp READINGS off and the actual temp is not hotter than it has ever been.....I guess....heh. I do like how SpeedFan is controlling the temp better than CoreCenter...if you guys have not tried it, you might want to. It did lower my temp readings 8-9C. Here is the link to the thread on setting it up.

  • What are safe CPU/GPU operating temps?

I'm running BONIC on my new 6 core Mac Pro, 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, dual D700 GPU's and I've been monitoring CPU/GPU temps and fan RPMs using Temp Gauge Pro ... once BONIC gets going you can see all the CPUs maxed out and temps begin to rise... as expected of course, but after about 5 minutes or so the fan is maxing out at 1900 rpm and I see max CPU temps hitting ~92 degrees ... GPUs are running cooler...
is this within the safe operating range ?

I have the base 4 core and with Mac FanConrol I get 60C GPU Diode, 57 CPU Proximity while running Setie@home and Einstein. Fan is 914

  • What are typical operating temp ranges?

I have the new 27" imac the MC813. I have iStat pro and Im wondering what the average temps people see that are ok. Mine seem high and Im worried once I start processing HD movies and burning them Im going to kill this thing.
    Thank you in advance

I don't own an iMac, and the temps are different between desktops and notebooks (which I own).  Since I do not know the answer, what I can do to assist you best is to suggest googling "operating temp iMac 27" or something along those lines.  I did find some answers.  Also, since it is new (assuming is has been owned for less than 90 days). you can call AppleCare (if a # is available for your country, you can check here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 )and get the answer directly from the source.  Good luck and I hope you get your answer

  • Early 2009, 24" iMac: What are normal operating temps?

My iMac overheats and automatically shuts down frequently.  Sometimes, just watching a movie on Quicktime causes the CPU to top 80C and cause a shutdown.  Fans never run faster than 3500-3600rpm.
Another thing that I noticed, is that the hiutil process runs twice a day using 100% of my processor, and always causes an overheat and shurtdown.
Can anyone direct me to normal operating temps for this model iMac, or advise what may be worng?
This sreenshot displays temps (Celcius) with only Safari running.  With uTorrent running (not actually feeding peers), and Quicktime, I get an overheat.
    TEMPS                                   FANS
HD Macintosh   54                Optical drive   801rpm
    CPU                    55               Hard Drive      1599rpm
CPU Heatsink   51               CPU Fan          3580rpm
    Ambient              39
    CPU Diode        72
    CPU Heatsink   60
    HD Bay               54
    Mem Controller  57
Processor  2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256 MB
    Running Mountain Lion 10.8.

Your temps are somewhat high, but still within acceptable levels.
I would be more comfortable seeing many of the temps in the 40 degree Celsius range.
Your CPU temps are on the high side and probably why your CPU fans are running high.
When was the last time you clear out any of the dust, lint and fine dirt particles from your iMac.
IF you've never done this, you need to completely unplug your iMac, find a heavy blanket or towel to lay your iMac, face down on the soft material. Using a special electronics vacuum, a portable, plug in vacuum or standardnhiuse vacuum with hose and attchments, using either the bare hose end or crvice tool, carefully and slowly vacuum all air intake and exhaust vents, openings and all of the ports to get rid of as much fine dust, dirt and lint as possible.
Do not use a vacuum attachment with brushes. This could cause a problem with random static charges.
Once this is done, re-setup your iMac, plug all your peripherals in and then do an SMC reset by plugging in your iMac to power. Wait 5 seconds, then power up your iMac.
Then report back here with any changes in temps.

  • Normal operating temps. for MacPro2,1, 3GHz Xeon, 8 core?

Does anyone know where I can find a chart or a list of normal operating temps. for the MacPro2,1, 3GHz Xeon, 8 core?
I can't seem to find anything online. Thanks for any help.

I think Hardware Monitor would tell you what and may have a database.
Intel obviously. Just look up the processor for TCASE and TJMAX
More interested in what YOURS are and FBDIMM temps are often the most helpful.
Considering how many people are upgrading theirs to X5355s, redoing thermal paste, there is a lot of info out there.

  • Y730 Game Zone Temp and Fan Speed Display

I've got a Y730 that I'm having issues troubleshooting.  Currently the fan runs full speed and the display for Fan Speed and CPU temp on the Game Zone don't register anything.  I've tried running some apps that are suppose to read and display fan information and they also don't pick anything up.
I'm a little confused about what is going on because both the temp and the fan speed aren't displayed. Does all this information come from the fan or could there be something else that is causing the issue?

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.
