Optimal Locations for SQL 2005 TempDB & ReportServerTempDB MDF & LDF Files

Hello. I have SQL Server 2005 SP4 installed on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard SP2.
The server has four CPU cores. The server was configured with the following drive configuration.
RAID 1 - System drive
RAID 5 - SQL MDF files
RAID 1 - SQL LDF files
There is currently one of each of the following files on the server.
The MDF files are on the RAID 5 array, while the LDF files are on the RAID1 array for SQL LDF files.
TempDB.mdf
ReportServerTempDB.mdf
TempLog.ldf
ReportServerTempDB_log.ldf
It is my understanding that having one TempDB per core is a best practice, so I should create three more TempDB’s.
Does that also apply to ReportServerTempDB? Given the drive configuration of this server, where should all of the required MDF and LDF files for the TempDB’s and ReportServerTempDB’s be located?

You cannot create more than 1 tempb in any SQL Instance. The recommendations are to have additional tempdb *data files* depending on cores upto a max of 8. Obviously this depends on every environment. This recommendation is only for tempdb. It is not
for ReportServerTempDB’s. They are totally different and is not used similar to tempdb.
http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/paul/a-sql-server-dba-myth-a-day-1230-tempdb-should-always-have-one-data-file-per-processor-core/
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/cindygross/archive/2009/11/20/compilation-of-sql-server-tempdb-io-best-practices.aspx
Now, it is good to keep tempdb in its own drive, but because you dont have one specific, you can just put tempdb data files in data files drive and log file in log files drive.
You might want to consider moving them to a seperate disk if you see IO contention.

• Restore MDF/LDF files

We have a situation where someone deleted content of a table from the database. We have a backup of the MDF/LDF file where we can restore the database from - though we do not want to restore the entire database but only one table. I was thinking of creating
a new database on the same SQL instance, restoring the mdf/ldf files to this newly created database and then import the information from the this database to the new db. How do I go about doing this using SQL server? Any help will be greatly appreciated. -RS

Hi VJ Shah,
If you are using SQL Server 2005 and higher, then we could use the Import and Export Wizard to copy the new table's data to the old one. Here are the general steps:
Right click old database, select Tasks and then select Import Data…
On the Choose a Data Source page, type your server name and select the new database, and then Next.
On the Choose a Destination page, type your server name and select your old database, and then Next.
On the Specify Table Copy or Query page, select Copy data from one or more tables or views, and the Next.
On the Select Source Tables and Views, select the table which you want to copy,
specify the destination on the right column, and then Next.
If there are any unclear, please feel free to ask.
Thanks,

• Gathering physical memory for SQL 2005..SQL 2014

Hi All,
I'm trying to write a query to gather physical memory across my SQL servers (from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012).
However, the sys.dm_os_sys_info DMV (the column for physical memory) is not the same after the switch to SQL 2012+.
Here is the original query:
SELECT
@@SERVERNAME AS ServerName,
CASE WHEN LEFT(CAST(serverproperty('productversion') as char), 1) = 9 THEN '2005'
WHEN LEFT(CAST(serverproperty('productversion') as char), 4) = 10.0 THEN '2008'
WHEN LEFT(CAST(serverproperty('productversion') as char), 4) = 10.5 THEN '2008R2'
WHEN LEFT(CAST(serverproperty('productversion') as char), 2) = 11 THEN '2012'
END AS MajorVersion,
SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel') AS MinorVersion,
SERVERPROPERTY('productversion') AS FullVersion,
SERVERPROPERTY ('edition') AS Edition,
SERVERPROPERTY('collation') as Collation,
cpu_count as CpuCount,
physical_memory_in_bytes/1024/1024 as PhysMemMB
FROM [sys].[dm_os_sys_info]
If I run that on SQL 2014, it fails because 'physical_memory_in_bytes' is now called 'physical_memory_kb'
I tried to do an IF..THEN..ELSE:
IF (cast(serverproperty('productversion') as char) like '11.%')
Then change the query accordingly but it would fail because i guess when it tried to parse the whole code, one of the T-SQL variations would have a column that did not exist in that particular version of SQL Server.
Is there a way I can get physical memory across SQL 2005..SQL 2012 or rewrite the T-SQL above to be able to run on both?
Thanks in advance

Oh it seemed like you are asking SQL Server memory. the name for physical memory column ha changed only in SQL Server 2012. I wrote below script just first run select SERVERPROPERTY('ResourceVersion') to get exact resource database version of
SQL Server 2012 and then replace it in below script
IF cast ( SERVERPROPERTY('ResourceVersion') as char (10) )= '11.00.2000'--2012 resource database version
select (physical_memory_kb/1024)as Physical_mem_MB from sys.dm_os_sys_info
else
select (physical_memory_in_bytes/1024/1024) as physical_mem_MB from sys.dm_os_sys_info
Edit: A more optimized query
If cast (LEFT( CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ResourceVersion') AS VARCHAR(20)),2) as INT) in ('11','12')
select (physical_memory_KB/1024) as Physical_Mem_MB from sys.dm_os_sys_info
--else it uses for 2005-08R2
else select (physical_memory_in_bytes/1024/1024) as Physical_Mem_MB from sys.dm_os_sys_info

My Technet Articles
Hi Shanky,
Doesn't work and that's what I meant in my initial post..when I run that code against a SQL 2012 instance, it parses fine but when I execute it I get:
Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 6
Invalid column name 'physical_memory_in_bytes'.

• Windows authentication for SQL 2005 DB connect

Hi all,
I'm trying to create a DB connect
in the connection parameters when I mention a user name and password who is created as a SQL authentication then it is working fine.
but in my connection parameters if I mention a user name password who have a Windows authentication in the SQL 2005 which we are trying to connect then it gives an error. It is not connecting .
Can you please tell me how can we connect using a windows authentication.
Mey

Solution to solve the actual issue :
For the SAP system to use standard default NT authentication
Please refer to this link: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/9c/d736b880c34f76b507bac7751a0474/content.htm
1. Database login:
SQL Server login with System Administrator privileges, that is this login should be member of the sysadmin fixed server role on the target SQL Server. If such a login does not exist, you have to create it on the target SQL Server. The SAP multi-connect mechanism allows both integrated security logins and the use of SQL Server authentication. For security reasons, we highly recommend to use integrated security (Windows authentication). If you use Windows security, leave this field empty.
2.  Password / Re-enter password :
If you have decided to use integrated security, leave these fields empty. Otherwise enter the password of the SQL Server login.
The above pointer was used to solve the login issue but we still had issues in getting the schema visible in SAP BW. As the user ID was left blank we were not able to get the schema view for the <blank> user.
Note to be applied to solve the Schema issue :
note 1091929 :  Link
so now you can enter the schema to be used in DS creaton screen.

1.1.2.25 I go into preferences and set the default location to look for .sql files but when I click the open button it uses the sqldeveloper install directory and I have to browse for my folder. This is only on start up, once I have browsed to it one time it holds the location.

There is an (accepted) feature request at http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=42626:39:2786549926729345::NO::P39_ID:3263 asking for this shortcut. Please vote for it to add weight and see it implemented sooner.

• OWB 10gR2 : How to configure ctl and log locations for Sql*Loader mappings?

Hi all,
I'm using OWB 10gR2 to load data in tables with Sql*Loader mappings.
In my project I have a datafile module and an Oracle module.
When creating an sql*loader mapping in the oracle module, there is two properties for this mappings that I want to modify. The first is Control File Location and the second is Log File Location. Values for those properties are equal to the data file module location. When trying to change those values I can only chose "Use module configuration location".
Somebody knows how to configure those properties with different locations as the one of the flat file module?
What I want to do is to store the data file in one directory, and control file and log file in other directories.
Thank you for your help.
Bernard

Hi,
You're right, my problem is that the dropdown only show the location associated with the flat file location even if I have other file locations created in the design repository.
The good news is that I have found the solution to solve the problem :
1) Edit the file module and in tab "Data locations", add the locations you want to use for control file and log file.
2) Open configuration window of the mapping and then the dropdown for properties Control File Location and Log File Location show new locations
I have tested my mapping after changing those properties and it's working.

• SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 Replication for SSRS

I recently successfully implemented one-way log shipping from a production SQL 2005 database to a new SQL 2012 database in the hopes that I can use the 2012 database to run SSRS 2012 on it.
Unfortunately, the 2012 database is kept offline since log shipping between two DIFFERENT SQL versions can only be done in a NO RECOVERY mode. (Standby mode is NOT available which would make the SQL 2012 read only and therefore workable for SSRS
2012.)
Does anyone have any suggestions on if there is another method on how to achieve this?

Yes, You can try replication. I hope you've latest service pack upgrade for SQL 2005.

• I downloaded Mozilla 4 and tried to use it then, I had to delete it and go back to 3.6 vs now I am having problems with my MS SQL 2005 why? What was changed to enable Mozilla 4 to sync with MS SQL and how do I get it corrected?

After, trying Mozilla 4 beta and then having to go back to a previous vs of Mozilla 3.6.11 my MS OLE DB Provider for SQL 2005 Server has this error message '80040E57' I am using Windows 7 which was pre-installed on my new computer. I do not know how to fix it?

The latest flash player release is 11,0,1,152.
Can you upgrade to this version and see whether the crash stil exists?
Go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer to download and install flash player.
In case you need direct link to installer/uninstaller, please go to http://forums.adobe.com/message/3952360#3952360 to find them.

My computer crashes repeatedly and I get the message pages are not responding do you want to stop, and/or shockwave is not responding do you want to stop. I have Windows XP Service Pack 3, I am having the same issues whether I use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. My HP Pavilion Desktop has 504 MB of Ram and I am using high speed internet connection. Because it was crashing so much, I used the uninstall program for Flash player to uninstall Flash, I checked my registry and removed anything I saw that was Flash. I then uninstalled Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, then I reinstalled the most recent versions from their websites. I did the same for FlashPlayer and Shockwave Flash. I went to the Adobe website and had them check to see if it was working and it shows I have FlashPlayer 10.3.181.36. The page that shows which version of flash player goes with Windows XP states that I should have 10.3.181.34 (This is what I thought I had before I updated, I was having the same problems). When I went into my computer to see what version I have, it shows 11.5.9.620 Activex and both Flash Player and Flash Player Object is listed as 10.3.181.34. My firewall for Windows is set to medium. I also am running Norton Internet Security. It takes anywhere from 3-6minutes for some of my games to load, and I have to refresh at least 3-4 times in order to play. When I do start to play it freezes frequently and I use escape to free it up. This has been going on for a month. I have no idea what to do. I am not very computer savy and I have been learning as I go.

• IPCC 4.0(5) with Sql 2005 Enterprise DB

Hello,
I currently have IPCC 4.0(5) (no SR) doing with an ODBC connection to a SQL 2000 server. I am preparing to upgrade the SQL 2000 server to SQL 2005 (only upgrading a SQL server, not touching SQL 2000 running on IPCC).
According to the document in the link below, support for SQL 2005 as an enterprise db was not posted until IPCC 4.0(5) SR2. I will be upgrading to IPCC 7.x very soon, but need to buy time and avoid touching IPCC 4.0(5). Does anyone know if the ODBC connection from IPCC 4.0(5) will connect to a SQL 2005 server?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff.
You will probably have problems with the database subsystem, when you upgrade to UccX7.0.1 if the 3rd party database is af SQL2k5 server.
There is a fix for that problem, check below :
Upgrading UCCX to 7.0(1)Sr4 is failing ODBC connection to SQL 2005.
Symptom:
Upgrading the UCCX server to 7.0(1) Sr4 and OS to 2003.1.4a SR11 is failing the ODBC connection to SQL 2005 external database. (also a problem in new installations)
The error generated when trying to setup a ODBC connection to SQL 2005 database is
======
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
=======
Conditions:
Upgrade to UCCX 7.0(1) Sr3 or 4 and OS upgrade to 2003.1.4a SR11
Workaround:
Work around:
a) In UCCX SQL Server 2000 - Start the Client Network Utility. (cliconfg.exe is used from MSDE versions of UccX)
b) On the General tab, add TCP/IP in the list under Enabled protocols by order. (make sure its first)
c) Click the Alias tab, and then click Add. Under Network libraries, select TCP/IP.
d) In the Server name text box, type the IP address of the server that is running SQL Server
2005.
Note:
If port other that 1433 is being used Click the check box to clear the Dynamically determine port option, and then type the port number of the instance of SQL Server 2005 in the Port number text box.

• SQL 2005 x64 poor performance after migration from SQL 2005 x86

Recently We've migrated SQL 2005 x86 SP1 Enterprise running on Windows 2003 Enterprise to new hardware where is running Windows 2008 SP2 and SQL 2005 x64 SP4 with CU3.
In the work day, there are sometime SQL excpetions like this below. On other hand i can also tell that we already found some queries which has some inner joins and where clauses on nvarchar fileds, because of the nature of application. Such a query
is running for about 11 seconds on old SQL server, and about 6 minutes on new SQL server. My main question if is this possible just with a change to new architecture of SQL and more last patches and updates for SQL 2005. Is there any way how to get
this queries running faster, without rewritng them with new ones? Is this also possible this could be also cause for SQL exceptions, which we are facing on SQL server?
About new hardware, for now we can't find it something wrong. There is basic configuration:

32GB RAM
Intel(R)Xeon® CPU [email protected], 6 core

>Is there any way how to get this queries running faster, without rewriting them with new ones?
You need to perform basic performance tuning steps in the new environment.
Software optimization:
http://www.sqlusa.com/articles/query-optimization/
Disk optimization:
http://www.sqlusa.com/bestpractices/configureharddisk/
Memory optimization:
http://www.sqlusa.com/bestpractices/memory-configuration/
REBUILD INDEXES, eliminate missing indexes & UPDATE STATISTICS.
If there is still a problem, look in Activity Monitor for expensive queries. Optimize them. As a general rule, you don't want to have expensive queries in RDBMS.
