Optimize a data parser that converts CLOB into table

I am importing complex array data from Cold Fusion into ORACLE using a stored procedure. What I've done is convert the data into a CLOB, pass it into ORACLE, then parse it into a temporary table using a pipelined function. Unfortunately the array is large (16k rows) and it's taking a while to run.
What I'm looking is a better optimization for the data conversion. I've tried XML and the dbms_xmlstore but it was too slow. I am on 10g and don't have access to the log files or even the ability to trace anything. All I can do is look for better ways to do things and then try them.
Any suggestions or help to improve things would be welcome.
Warren Koch
The function converts the array of object into a custom delimited CLOB ( ; betwen values, | between rows) that looks like this:
prop1;prop2;prop3|prop1;prop2;prop3|prop1;prop2;prop3|prop1;prop2;prop3|
Here is the code I created.
CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE THE_IMAGE_TYPE AS OBJECT
IMAGE_NAME VARCHAR2(100),
IMAGE_SIZE INTEGER,
IMAGE_LOC INTEGER
CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE THE_IMAGE_TABLE AS TABLE OF THE_IMAGE_TYPE

     out_rec := the_image_type(NULL, NULL, NULL);
     IF SUBSTR(in_image_clob, -1, 1) != '|'
     THEN
          image_clob := image_clob || '|';
     END IF;
     image_delim_index := INSTR(image_clob, '|', image_index);
     WHILE image_delim_index > 0
     LOOP
          row_string := SUBSTR(image_clob, image_index, image_delim_index - image_index);
          row_string := REPLACE(row_string || '::::', ':', ' :');

          out_rec.image_loc := make_number(REGEXP_SUBSTR(row_string, '[^:]+', 1, 2));
          out_rec.image_size := make_number(REGEXP_SUBSTR(row_string, '[^:]+', 1, 3));
          PIPE ROW(out_rec);
          image_index := image_delim_index + 1;
          image_delim_index := INSTR(image_clob, '|', image_index);
     END LOOP;
     RETURN;
EXCEPTION
     WHEN OTHERS
     THEN
          RAISE;
END;
Used in my code like this:
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'TRUNCATE TABLE image_import';
FOR x IN (SELECT * FROM TABLE(convert_image_data(in_imagelist))
WHERE image_name IS NOT NULL)
LOOP
INSERT INTO image_import (image_name, loc, image_size)
               VALUES (x.image_name, x.image_loc, x.image_size);
END LOOP;

Is there any chance you can just use 1 SQL statement here? I gave it a shot based on the string you posted, not by trying to reverse engineer your code so it's possible i got it entirely wrong :)

  • DocumentBuilder.Parse() if converting & amp; into &

    Hi,
    I have a dom document which I have converted into a String and one of the Nodes had & amp; in it.
    When I then parse the string back into a Dom Document the parser converts the & amp; back into a &.... and this causes my problems later on.
    Does anyone know How I can get round this.
    The whole I am converting a document into a string and back again is because the Dom document isn't serializable.
    Any ideas?
    Jag

    well, that's the job of the parser to resolve entities, therefore converting &amp; into a & is correct.

  • XSLT to convert XML into Tables

    Hi,
    I'm trying to import my XML data into a table format. After adding an XSL file to my Structure Application as a Preprocessing Stylesheet, and importing my XML instance file with the Template file opened, the "Unknown File Type" error window appeared asking for a file format to Convert From. Picking any one doesn't create a table.
    The XSL file tranforms the XML data into an HTML file that has a table with columns corresponding to the XML data. I was thinking using that type of XSL because it renders tables.
    Below is the XSL markup:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
    <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
    <xsl:template match="/">
      <html>
      <body>
      <h2>Products</h2>
        <table border="1">
          <tr bgcolor="#9acd32">
            <th>Title</th>
            <th>Number</th>
            <th>Date</th>
          </tr>
          <xsl:for-each select="Products/Product">
          <tr>
            <td><xsl:value-of select="Title"/></td>
            <td><xsl:value-of select="Number"/></td>
            <td><xsl:value-of select="Date"/></td>
          </tr>
          </xsl:for-each>
        </table>
      </body>
      </html>
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    Title, Number, and Date are child elements of the Product element, which is a child element of the Products root element in my XML file.
    Am I applying the stylesheet correctly here? Am I using the write kind of stylesheet?
    Thanks,
    zeb

    Hi Michael, Van,
    Thank you for responding to my post. Your feedback was very helpful!
    I was able to get the table to generate in FrameMaker but no data from the XML file is flowing into it. All that appears is the header row with "Title," "Number," and "Date" in the cells, and a row with blank cells underneath it. The Structure View pane has a red "<no value>" for the "Cols" and "Widths" attributes of the Table element. Only the Title column is affected by the width value.
    The XSL, RW, and EDD files are as a follows: (The structure for the XML is a "Products" root element with mulitple "Product" child elements that each have a "Title," "Name," "Date" child element.)

    I'm having trouble placing the "<xsl:for-each select="Products/Product">" tag in the XSL file. When I put it under  TRow, FrameMaker  gives an error that "TRow is not a valid for content (TCell)+". Only when I place it within the TCell tags (as I have above) does the above-mentioned Table with a Header row and a row with empty cells generate.
    Is the XSL the problem here?
    Thanks,

  • File Date needs to be insterted into Table

    We process/insert two CSV files from the file system into the DB that is executed from a CRON job(I think).
    The CRON job calls SQLPLUS and calls the stored procedures to load the files. The SPs are using UTIL_FILE to open and read the file.
    This works well but now I need to get the date the file was created and insert that as well.
    Anyone know how I can get file date?

    Hi,
    Some simple method for fetching the creation date of your file from OS and insert it into oracle DB is :-
    Method 1:
    1. in your cron tab fist write a shell script ( is you know the name of your file ) like this
    ls -l my_file.csv | cut -b52-63 > my_file.date
    this will write the creation date of CSV file in to a text file.
    2. Since you know the name of your file ( just file extention is changed ) You can read this file from you stored procedure thru UTL file package. Read the Date from that file an insert into your Db.
    i.e. your unix shell script will contain a command that i have mentioned in step one, and the call of that procedure.
    Method 2:
    Another way is
    create a shell script ( say a.sh ) like this
    1) echo 'insert into x (x) values (' > a.sql
    echo "'" >> a.sql
    ls -l my_file.csv | cut -b52-63 >> a.sql
    echo "'" >>a.sql
    echo ');' >> a.sql
    echo 'commit;' >>a.sql
    sqlplus -s user/pwd@dbnm @a.sql
    2) $ chmod 777 a.sh
    3) $ sh a.sh
    4) $ more a.sql
    insert into x (x) values (
    Jul 5 2002
    commit;
    --- this means just run step 1 and two, add entry in crontab for step 3.
    this will work.
    ( i have written insert statement , like wise u can write your update statement )
    Hope this will help you

  • How to convert Templates into tables under Smartforms

    Hi Gurus,
        I need to print internal table data onto a Template. But I'm wondering as how to convert a Template into Table. It is very urgent.
       Answers are rewardable.
    -Syed.

    Hi ,
    Why do you wantto use templates as table control .
    You  should use table control  in place of template  to dipslay contents of an internal table .
    To use table control as template  put template inside a loop  . Im not sure it works or not .

  • Extract Data from XML and Load into table using SQL*Loader

    Hi All,
    We have a XML file (sample.xml) which contains credit card transaction information. We have a standard SQL*Loader control file which loads the data from a flat file and the control file code is written as position based method. Our requirement is to use this control file as per our requirement(i.e) load the data into the table from our XML file), But we need help in converting the XML to a flat file or Extract the data from the XML tags and pass the information to the control file and in turn it loads the table.
    Your suggestion is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    First of all go to PSA maintanance ( Where you will see PSA records ).
    Goto list---> Save-> File---> Spreadsheet (Choose Radio Button)
    > Give the proper file name where you want to download and then-----> Generate.
    You will get ur PSA data in Excel Format.
    Thanks
    Mayank

  • Convert clob to string?

    hi all,
    i'm having a problem getting the returnvalue of a storedproc. i'm using oracle database and created an oracle function that returns a clob data. unfortunately in vb.net, it won't accept clob format. if i change the returnvalue to varchar2 format it works fine.
    is there a way to convert clob into string?
    thanks.
    p.s.
    i'm using clob datatype because i need to return a large amount of characters (basically DDL statements like Creating tables with about a hundred partition more or less, also for creating a view with a very large text).

    It should be possible since Value is a string type property. Say if your OracleClob object name is clob1 then it should be possible to write something like -
    string str = clob1.Value;//C# syntax
    If you are using OracleParameter's Value property then you will have to do ".Value" twice as shown below -
    OracleParameter paramHavingClobInIt;
    string str = (paramHavingClobInIt.Value as OracleClob).Value; //C# syntax

  • Converting CLOB to BLOB

    I am trying to convert clob into blob through following code.
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION clob_to_blob (clob_in IN CLOB)
    RETURN BLOB
    AS
    v_blob BLOB;
    v_varchar RAW(32767);
    v_start BINARY_INTEGER := 1;
    v_buffer BINARY_INTEGER := 32767;
    BEGIN
    FOR i IN 1..CEIL(DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH(clob_in) / v_buffer)
    LOOP
    v_varchar := UTL_RAW.CAST_TO_RAW(DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(clob_in, v_buffer, v_start)) ;
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('DATA :' ||DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(clob_in, v_buffer, v_start));
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(' V_VARCHAR :'|| v_VARCHAR);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(' V_VARCHAR LENGTH :'|| LENGTH(v_VARCHAR));
    DBMS_LOB.WRITEAPPEND(v_blob, LENGTH(v_VARCHAR), v_varchar);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('after append');
    v_start := v_start + v_buffer;
    END LOOP;
    RETURN v_blob;
    END clob_to_blob;
    calling code:
    declare
    var clob;
    begin
    var:='3433534534de';
    testblob(var);
    end;
    It gives me following error:
    declare
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-21560: argument 2 is null, invalid, or out of range
    i don't know whats the prob?
    thanx

    dbms_lob.writeappend expects a real lob locator, which you can only get by selecting from a lob column.
    create table blobtab (b blob);
    insert into blobtab values (empty_blob());
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION clob_to_blob (clob_in IN CLOB)
    RETURN BLOB
    AS
    v_blob blob;
    v_varchar RAW(32767);
    v_start BINARY_INTEGER := 1;
    v_buffer BINARY_INTEGER := 32767;
    BEGIN
    select b into v_blob from blobtab;
    FOR i IN 1..CEIL(DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH(clob_in) / v_buffer)
    LOOP
    v_varchar := UTL_RAW.CAST_TO_RAW(DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(clob_in, v_buffer, v_start)) ;
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(' DATA :' || DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(clob_in, v_buffer, v_start));
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(' V_VARCHAR :' || v_VARCHAR);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(' V_VARCHAR LENGTH :' || utl_raw.LENGTH(v_VARCHAR));
    DBMS_LOB.WRITEAPPEND(v_blob, utl_raw.LENGTH(v_VARCHAR), v_varchar);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('after append');
    v_start := v_start + v_buffer;
    END LOOP;
    RETURN v_blob;
    END clob_to_blob;
    declare
    blobvar blob;
    begin
    blobvar := clob_to_blob(dbms_xmlgen.getXML('select 1 from dual'));
    end;

    Can anybody help me out how to get the data from that maintenance view into the internal table of my ABAP program.
    Regards.

    Hi,
    Create a context node for the screen fields for which you want to enter the values with cardinality 1.1.....
    Now in the layout of your view bind the screen input fields to that context node(attributes) to the value property of the input fields...
    Now in the action of ADD button....
    --> go the wizard and select the read node button and select the node which you have created it generates the auto code for you.....
    for example if the node is contains aone attribute like MATNR
    reading the node from wizard will generate the code as....
    DATA lo_nd_matnr TYPE REF TO if_wd_context_node.
      DATA lo_el_matnr TYPE REF TO if_wd_context_element.
      DATA ls_matnr TYPE wd_this->element_matnr.
      DATA lv_matnr TYPE wd_this->element_matnr-matnr.
    * navigate from <CONTEXT> to <MATNR> via lead selection
      lo_nd_matnr = wd_context->get_child_node( name = wd_this->wdctx_matnr ).
    * @TODO handle non existant child
    * IF lo_nd_matnr IS INITIAL.
    * ENDIF.
    * get element via lead selection
      lo_el_matnr = lo_nd_matnr->get_element( ).
    * @TODO handle not set lead selection
      IF lo_el_matnr IS INITIAL.
      ENDIF.
    * get single attribute
      lo_el_matnr->get_attribute(
        EXPORTING
          name =  `MATNR`
        IMPORTING
          value = lv_matnr ).
    here the variable lv_matnr will contain the entered value......
    now you can use this value for further process.
    Thanks,

    LONG has been depricated since 8i so I don't believe there is a general solution to go backwards short of reloading the data.
