Option to always use sidecar files for XMP

Lightroom gives you the option to write metadata to XMP files, which is convenient if you want to share data with other programs (ACR, various DAM programs). In the beta versions, this data would always be stored in .XMP sidecar files, presumably for safety reasons. However, V1 writes the XMP data into the image file itself for those formats that support it (DNG, JPG, TIFF).
I would really like to have the option to *force* Lightroom to use sidecar files for XMP data, like the betas did. The current V1 behavior (embedding data) is quite inefficient for fairly common backup scenarios.
For example, I tend to back up all my raw files onto DVD after importing and culling. In addition I make a daily backup of all metadata that gets sent over the internet to a web server - a relatively small upload. What happens if I use DNG for my raw files and update something as small as a keyword? Indeed, *all* of the corresponding DNG files are modified, and because my backup software cannot know that only the XMP data has changed, all files must be burned to DVD again. If the metadata were stored in sidecar files, a simple, efficient metadata backup would take care of things.
To implement this, a simple switch in the preferences would suffice, and the necessary code is already there. The only possible problem is the occurrence of two files with identical names, excluding the extension. For this case, I can see four different 'solutions':
1) Force XMP metadata to be synchronized between files with equal names
2) Make an .XMP sidecar file for only one of the files (always the raw file, for example)
3) Update the XMP specification to specify what should be done in this situation (maybe include the file extension in the XMP data)
Reards,
Simon

Actually, I don't (notice the 'if' :)). And this is only one of the reasons. I just picked DNG as an example, to keep things simple and because it seems Adobe wants DNG to work well for photographers.
However, the same applies to JPG and TIFF images. I often end up changing details in the metadata after the image has been finished. For example, to correct the spelling in a keyword that has been applied to half the images in my database... Talking about a nightmare scenario!

  • How to use .mov files for video in Flash...

    Hello-
I am trying to use .mov files for my Flash videos. I know it uses .mp4/flv/f4v, but I really need to use .movs. I know this works... but how?
    Suggestions?

unfortunately running it through Adobe Encoder makes it a much, much larger file and the quality goes out the window. i really need to use .mov.
    any suggestions?

Could you please add an option to Always Use Lens Correction.

Glad to hear you have it working.  Setting your own defaults is a powerful feature.
By mentioning the things above I've been trying to help you avoid some of the additional potholes we've all run through, as well as trying to make a point that if you give attitude, you get attitude.  By contrast, if you ask nicely you tend to get nice answers.

  • Using NFS file for ASM

    hello to all
I am familar with ASM and NFS but I don't know what is mean of using NFS file for ASM
can you explain for me ? or do you know manual for this on WEB ?
    thanks

I don't think ASM via NFS is optimal.
You need to create your NFS mounts. Then use dd to create files in your various NFS mounts and then present these files to ASM as disks.

  • Sidecar file for DNG missing?

Currently I'm a little bit confused about what is happening to my LR cat.
After I have detected VCs with out of sync metadata in my LR catalog - see http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc4bbeb
now it shows up a DNG-image with the question mark on top right of the thumbnail in grid view. Moving up the mouse over the icon gives me the hint that the sidecar file is missing!
The DNG has modified develop settings and metadata (after import). So far so good. In metadata panel it says that I (should) have an .xmp sidecar for this DNG.
My problem: I thought that I have read that DNG get all develop-settings and metadata written as xmp directly into the DNG-file - not into sidecar xmp.
    LR1.1 on WinXP SP2.
    Harald

I just recognized that LR seems to maintain 2 classes of DNGs.
    a) DNGs I converted from CR2 upon import process are marked as "Digital Negative (DNG)" in metadata field for file format.
    b) DNGs which I previously converted from CR2 to DNG using ACR converter some time ago are marked as file format "RAW".
The DNG which causes the trouble as mentioned above is one of the category b, so it is converted by ACR converter before import into LR.
Does LR behave as intended by design? Is Adobe even aware of this behavior?

  • Premiere CC still not using thm files for DSLR timecode?

I'm looking to confirm that Premiere Pro CC still does not use the thm sidecar files from Canon DSLR mov files to extract time of day timecode when importing. I know in PP CS6 it did not. Just checking to see if that is still the case. Currently all DSLR files import with 00:00:00:00 timecode as technically most DSLR cameras do not create real timecode in the mov files.
My workaround for the past few years has been to use qtChange to add camera time of day timecode from the thm files to the mov files before importing into Premiere. It may not seem like a big deal, but when sending edits to a colorist, for example, they LOVE some sort of timecode to help on their end. I should add that qtChange also can add a reel name to the mov files, which is an additional nicety for color grading software.
It would be great to skip that extra step before importing.
I'm heading over to the wishlist now to request this feature in future PP updates.
    Thank you!
    Billy

THM files are not used by Premiere Pro CC. You still need to use something like qtChange to add a proper TC track into the MOV file.

  • Do I need to use Flex Files for a 24 fps edit?

    Hello.
I am shooting on 16mm film, transferring to video (with key code burn in), editing on Final Cut 4, then matching back to film.
I would like to save money by not having to create Flex Files, and was told that if I do a reverse telecine in Cinema Tools (converting 29.97 transfer to 24), and then edit at 24 in FCP, I will be able to generate (manually) my own cut list when I am done by noting the key code burned at the head and tail frame of my shots. The Cinema Tools manual even implies it would be able to generate a cut list itself?
Can anyone speak to this or tell me why this plan wouldn't work--why I absolutely need a flex file? This will be a short film (under 10 minutes) and I will be capturing all the footage for the edit, so I don't need the flex file for help with capture, and I don't mind the time needed to log key codes myself for the cut list.
Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Hi. It costs enough to make a difference for my very, very small budget--a flat fee each time I transfer and I am shooting 100 foot rolls so there could be up to five or more transfers. Since I am capturing everything (entire camera rolls), I'm trying to understand if I need the flex files--if the key code is burned in, can't I use that for cut list? In other words, if I don't need the files for importing, what other reasons would you strongly advise me to have them made?

  • Using PDF files for items rather than .png.

    Hi there
We have been looking into improving iBook production. We have a few books that feature elements that are comprise of a background image with text over the top. As the text isn't in an iPad-friendly font (I.e. not in iOS) and it doesn't have to be searchable. Previously, the items have been produced individually either in Illustrator or Photoshop. The main 'problem' with this is the plethora of file it creates, and the huge amount to time taken to apply style changes across all the separate items, save, re-import into iBA, and re-apply all the iBA-specific attributes.
In an effort to speed up production somewhat, we have been trying to create these items in InDesign, using style sheets etc to give standardised appearance across all the items, and then drag and drop into iBA. The advantage is that all the separate items are in one document, and all style changes can be instantly applied to all items instantaneously, saving time, space, and effort.
It places them as PDFs, and after unzipping the .iba file, the PDFs look fine, with pin-sharp text (as you'd expect, as PDF text would be vector data. Similarly, when you zoom in to the items in iBA, the text is still pin-sharp.
However, once the iBA is previewed on a iPad, the text goes a little blurry. As one of the fonts is a dot-matrix-type font, the effect is noticeable - all the dots blur together into a line.
Does anyone have any idea as to what is happening to the PDF between iBA and the iPad? Does it rasterise it at some point?

    Hi Ken
'What leads me think it would?', well the fact that it worked, and looks ok. The iBook previews fine and works fine on the iPad.
We initially came up with the idea when we 'unzipped' an .iba file (you know, changing the .iba extension to .zip, then unarchiving the contents), and found that iBA itself had created .pdf files for the full-screen photos which appeared rotated and shadowed on the iPad page, but were viewed as straight, unshadowed, images. (the rotated version was the iBA-created PDF file, the full-screen was the original .jpg we pulled into iBA). Naturally, we were surprised. So we started mucking about, and found that drag/drop from ID worked, and looked OK.
As an update to my original post, it appears that the difference in quality was due to the fonts used. Once we opened the .PDFs within the .iba file, we converted the text to outlines, resaved the .pdfs, changed the unzipped folder back to an .iba file, and the font now looks great.
BTW, Is it me, or were you being snippy?

  • Always use URL Rewriting for session tracking?

    All you JSP guru:
I am working on a JSP project that requires session tracking. I have successfully implements session tracking with both cookies or URL rewriting. I know that with the HttpSession object, it will always try to use cookie first, if that's disabled, then it'll automatically switch to URL rewriting. However, is there a way to force the HttpSession object to ALWAYS use URL rewriting instead of cookies? I have searched for an answer for a long time and haven't been able to found a solution. Is it possible at all? Thank you very much.

i was going to say that WebSphere always uses URL rewriting if you enable it at all, but someone beat me to it (indirectly) :-)
however, that seemed to me to be a violation of the spec, which seemed to imply the behaviour you're describing (only use URL rewriting if cookies are not supported on the current client)
here's a response someone else made on a websphere newsgroup to a statement in that regard:
I believe you are technically correct. However from my
experience, I think the spec if flawed in this area since
there is no reliable way of determining whether the
client browser supports cookies. The authority on
    cookies (www.cookiecentral.com) says:
"To properly detect if a cookie is being accepted via
the server, the cookie needs to be set on one HTTP
request and read back in another. This cannot be
    accomplished within 1 request."
This is asking too much of a servlet engine
implementation. Even if it did submit a request for this
purpose, the user could refuse the cookie. So
then technically the browser supports cookies, but the
servlet engine infers it doesn't. So if the servlet engine
infers the browser does not support cookies and so
encodes the URL, it is again out of spec because the
browser really does support cookies. By doing it
however encoding is configured makes things simpler,
robust, consistent and avoids the flaw.
My opinion.so, mostly i'm just rambling, but if you're using websphere, you should get the behaviour your boss wants. if you're using something else, i suppose there's a chance it'll "violate" the spec in this same, potentially helpful way.
btw, i remember somebody else complaining that URL rewriting is less secure than cookies, but i kinda think they're about equal. it seems like either could be intercepted by a sniffer and then used to spoof. but i'm no expert in that stuff...

  • How to use expansion files for AIR app (flash cs6) on Google Play Store

I am currently working on an app that will undoubtedly end up bigger than the maximum size of 50 MB for the APK, and I have no clue how to add files to an expansion pack, how to load expansion pack, what files need to be in expansion pack, or even what an expansion pack does/how it works. If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great, I want to make an expansion pack now before I get even more files.

Haven't had a need to do this for file size purposes but since we can now download and use SWFs with ABC, I just specify my external SWFs when I compile and once my app is run it downloads the SWFs (with a pretty preloader) before the user can do anything. I have my own servers so I believe that's all that Amazon Bucket is actually used for. That user didn't have their own web servers to serve up the SWF content from.
Aside that, check the answer here. Google will turn any extra files uploaded for your app into OBB for you. You just upload the SWF:
Create expansion file for AS3 android Air App Flash cs6 - Stack Overflow
It also outlines if you need to upload multiple files then .zip them up and use an AS3 .zip library to extract the files.

What is the use of SAV file for rpd ?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
File gets created when rpd is in online mode.
When we open rpd in Online mode a dialogue box pops up saying “rpd is available in read-only” mode, Such cases to avoid this error we delete .log and .sav in repository directory and restart services.

    Hi,
I downloaded a add-on for iTunes, but it was in the form of a .dmg file. Could somebody please tell me how to use this file/unpack/ convert it to a useful form!
    Thanks for any help.

I just have a slight problem with controlling iTunes without switching apps/windows back to iTunes. I have a Logitech keyboard with media keys, but after installing 7.2 (and 7.3) the meda keys don't work with iTunes anymore. I thought the Sizzling keys download would solve the problem by assigning the functions to the media keys, but I can't even use the file!
Could you suggest an alternative solution for controlling iTunes?
