ORA-01666: controlfile is for a standby database - My DB Doesn't OPEN

dear Gurus,
I've created a Standby, and Configured the Dataguard no issues.
I've start a swtchover into Site 2
After half an Hour without responding I cancle the operation.
Now I'm facing this Situation, My Standby Site still Ok but my Prod Database shows ORA-01666: controlfile is for a standby database
What shall i do?
When I check the Config in the Dataguard Broker everything seems ok for SITE 2

  • The Critical Problems for Creating Standby Database

The Critical Problems for Creating Standby Database:(I want to create a physical standby database on the same system of the primary database)
    1. Should I copy all the backup datafiles, standby controlfile and password file to a same directory before the first time to mount the standby database?
    2. Before mounting the standby database, Should I change the datafile's name to a new one in the standby controlfile? How to change them?
    3. When issuing the command to mount the standby database, should I specify the controlfile's name.(using which controlfile to mount)
These problems are not clearly secified in Oracle documentations.

Can you point us to the Windows specific documentation you refer to?
The parameter DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT should take care of the new mapping for your datafiles (and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT for logs), so you should be able to put them where you want and use the parameter to point Oracle to the correct location. You should not need to change the name in the controlfile.
Place your standby controlfiles where you have the control files defined in your parameter file and Oracle should recofgnise that it is a standby db. You should not need to specify which controlfiles to use (if this is even possible), your CONTROL_FILES init parameter points to them.
Not sure about the password file....my instances are on separate boxes and the password file has the same name on both primary and standby.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Sukanta Paul.

    Hi Sukanta,
I didn't really understand what the problem is...
Let me explain, hope it will be clear.
You created a standby control file, and backed up the database (it doesn't matter in which order). Now, you have a standby database that is ready to apply logs. It will be able to apply log forever, until we will stop it.
The messages you see say the following:
    ORA-00279: change 51667831821 generated at 07/02/2009 01:19:40 needed for thread 1 {color:blue} - this says that the recovery process is now at scn 51667831821 {color}
    ORA-00289: suggestion : /nodal-archive/archive/1_55121_652209172.arc {color:blue} - the information needed for the recover is in this file (this is only the default name, you can choose other name if the file is called differently) {color}
    ORA-00280: change 51667831821 for thread 1 is in sequence #55121 {color:blue} - same here, the needed archive is sequence 55121 {color}
    ORA-00278: log file '/nodal-archive/archive/1_55120_652209172.arc' no longer needed for this recovery {color:blue} - this message is after Oracle has applied the log, and it means that this log is no longer needed {color}
Now it will wait for the next log. Again, this process is endless, this is how it is made to allow the standby database to be always synched with the primary.

  • OEM for physical standby database

    Hello All,
I am using Oracle 11.2.0.3. My enterprise manager is db console 11.2
I have Oracle Enterprise manager dbcnsole for my RAC primary database  and I have created through sqlplus command line a physical standby database.
    My questions
Can I use the RAC primary dbconsole to monitor my physical standby database? if yes what the steps?
Is it mandatory to use grid control in that case? if yes, what steps are needed to implement grid control ?
    Regards,

    Hi,
It is not possible to monitor/administer a Logical or Physical Standby database, i.e Data Guard, using Enterprise Manager Database Control.  This is primarily due to the fact that Database Control is designed to monitor 1 database and a Data Guard environment, by definition, includes more than 1 database.
If you attempt to run emca against a standby Database, you will get an error like (i.e. ORA-01219: database not open).
Database Control, can, of course, be used to monitor the current Primary database (with no ability to administer or monitor Data Guard related functionality).  In such a case, when failover occurs Database Control must be reconfigured to run on the new Primary database using the commands detailed in Note 278100.1 How To Drop, Create And Recreate DB Control In A 10g Database, section C. Recreate/ReConfig DB Control, Option 2. Recreate the DB Control Configuration Files and Repository.
Enterprise Manager Grid Control or Cloud Control provides the functionality for viewing, monitoring, and administering primary and standby databases in a Data Guard configuration.

Post Standby/DataGuard/ADG all questions further in Oracle Discussion Forums » High Availability » Data Guard
If you try to connect any users other than SYS in standby the error is very much expected. Of course you can connect with other users if you open database in OPEN READ ONLY mode, from 11gRx you can connect with other users even MRP is running if you are using ADG(active Data Guard licensed) .
I like to know, what you want to achieve by creating DB Link on physical standby database? Which is not allowed.
Database version is 10.2 standard edition

To use this you should use Oracle Net Service, you no need of DB Links.
    Ex:- sqlplus sys/****@standby as sysdba
Here standby refers to Oracle net service, Where you will have entries in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora file.

  • ASM Direct file access (for creating standby database in Standard Edition)

    Hi all,
Just really looking for any opinions, experience etc. that people may have about this.
My company are looking to set up a RAC system. They have also asked me to think about creating a standby database for disaster recovery. The first problem they give me here is that they only pay for Standard Edition of Oracle, therefore Dataguard is not an option.
I know that one can setup "manual" standby databases with Standard Edition, automating the shipping of archive logs with hand-written scripts etc. However, as the primary here is RAC, and will be using ASM on the shared storage, I'm not sure that this would be possible (and I'm even less sure that it would be desirable!). I say this because I don't know of a way to access (using only the O/S and/or Oracle) the database files stored in ASM, and even if there was a way, I can't imagine it being a good idea..
Anybody know of a way to tackle it, or care to contribute anything to this? As I say, my opinion is that even if it is possible to get to those files within ASM and hence manipulate them, I'd be worried that it wouldn't be such a good idea. But I'm willing to bet I'm not the first to have thought about it...
    Regards,
    Ados
    Edit 1:
Sorry, I should state that in principal, the basic environment is:
    Windows 2003 Server
    Oracle 10g R2
I didn't state that originally though, as I'd be keen to hear from anyone who may have attempted this on any O/S and Oracle version.
Edited by: Ados on 16-sep-2009 9:32
    Edit 2:
I also realise we could put the archive logs on the local nodes.. but to reinforce the point, I'm talking about having them on the shared storage where - in theory - the management is easier and more effective.
Edited by: Ados on 16-sep-2009 9:35

    For anyone interested..
I guess it would be done using RMAN (in fact, I'm sure of it...) in which case, I feel a lot more comfortable doing it!!
    For example:
    backup as copy archivelog ALL to destination 'c:\temp\';
This way, it shouldn't matter if the arch logs are stored using ASM, we can now get them and "see" them.. and hence "manipulate" them (pass them on to a standby DB, for example).
I'm just waiting to get my hands on a Standard Edition installation where I can test all this.. To try it all out (with 2-node RAC, and a standby server) I don't think I'll get a chance, so still interested in opinions, or if anyone's actually done this.
    Regards,
    Ados

  • Cannot Clear Critical Alert for Physical Standby Databases

10.2.0.4.0 Grid Control monitoring 10.2.0.4.0 databases and standby databases with 10.2.0.4.0 agents.
The standby databases are running on Xen guests. The O/S is Red Hat 4 Advanced Server.
I had a failure of Xen guest on Saturday that caused me to have to rebuild the standby servers. EM Grid Control successfully verifies the configurations and the status is normal for both physical standby databases. (A rebuilt logical standby database shows no alerts.)
Grid Control database targets page shows a single critical alert for each physical standby database. The alert is for "number of missing media files is 4". The metric graph shows the count as 0 since before the rebuilds. I cannot clear the alerts from the Critical Alerts page. Grid Control reports "The selected alert(s) cannot be manually cleared. They will clear automatically once the metric is no longer in a critical or warning state.".
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ray Westphal

    Thanks for the reply Anthony.
The result of the query on both standby databases is '0'. The metric graph also shows the value at '0' since before rebuilds.
And the OMS db and agents have been reset several times since I posted this.

  • Ora-1666 on standby database

    Hi All,
I have configured data guard on windows server 2003 platform with primary on 1 server and standby on another server. Oracle is of version 9i with exact release 9.2.0.6.0. I have enabled archived log on primary, modified init file with log_destinations, created password file, created control file and copied all these dbf files, redo log files, archived log files, control file, password files to standby server while the primary db is down. After copying all the required files on standby i tried to mount the standby but getting an error as ORA-01666: controlfile is for a standby database on the standby.
Where as in the primary db alert log file an error is logged as Errors in file d:\oracle\admin\primary\bdump\primary_arc0_4240.trc: ORA-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process but i can do tnsping successfully from primary to standby and vice-versa and on standby ORA-1666 signalled during: ALTER DATABASE MOUNT...
The things I suspect are Standby redo logs, Instance_name. I haven't created any standby logs on primary and i doubt whether it's mandatory to create on primary and standby db's or only in primary db pls let me know, i am confused of the standby logs because of these lines in document +(CREATE STANDBY REDO LOG FILES, IF NECESSARY (PRI+SEC)
In this customer’s case, the customer chose not to use standby redo logs (SRLs), which are not required in Maximum Performance mode. However, if you decide to use SRLs, you would create them on both sites. You cannot create them on the primary database prior to the backup used to create the standby database because the SRLs on the standby must be empty of primary database redo data.)+.
Instance_name parameter: we don't have this parameter in oracle10g where db_name and db_unique_name plays the role. Here in oracle9i is this Instance_name needs to be same on both primary and standby db's (i.e. primary on both db's or primary for primary and standby for standby?)
Earlier i have configured this dataguard setup in solaris platform of oracle version 10g where i have created standby logs on primary db alone and logs are applying on standby and it's working fine.

  • Relocating standby database

    Hello.
I am running 11.2 w/DG on Solaris 10, using DG Broker
My question is whether it is as easy to relocate datafiles, tempfiles, redo logs, controlfiles, etc. for our standby database as it would be for any other database?
So, for example, our current standby database resides on Direct Attached Storage and we want to relocate it to new mounts points on our SAN.
Can I do this for our standby database simply by:
changing the init parameter STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT to MANUAL (both primary and stby)
    ALTER SYSTEM SET STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT=MANUAL
    Stop the managed standby apply
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    shutting down the stby database
"copy" the files to new locations
edit pfile, bring stby database up to nomount mode using pfile, create new spfile, (to reflect new locations of controlfiles)
shut it back down, then bring it up to mount mode using spfile by default
Finally, rename (relocate) all the files
    ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE '<old file>' TO '<new file>';
Then, when I'm done, ALTER SYSTEM SET STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT=AUTO (for both primary and standby).
(maybe even bounce the database again and bring it up in mount mode)
One other question is do I actually need to do anything on the primary side at all?

    1) cancel MRP
    2) Put standby file management to manual.
    3) For control files , After shutdown You can simply copy the control files to the new location and perform the same changes in control_files
    4) For Data Files , Now after copying to the new location use the command you mentioned "ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE '<old file>' TO '<new file>';"
    5) Change value of "DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT" to point new locations.
    6) you can drop and recreate the redo log files to new location.
    7) Change value of "LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT" to point new locations.
    8) Put standby file management to AUTO.
    9) Start MRP
    These steps should be fine.

  • Procedure for Standby Database for SAP ERP 6.0

    Hello All,
We are using SAP ERP 6.0 with Oracle 10g with AIX 5.3.
We are planning to setup a standby database for our SAP ERP 6.0 production system as part of remote DR site using Oracle Data Guard.
I was under the assumption that i can first install an erp 6.0 (ABAP) system using homogeneous system copy from my erp 6.0 (ABAP) production system and then start configuring oracle dataguard.
But the System Copy Guide "System Copy for SAP Systems Based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SR3 ABAP" has mentioned that "You cannot create standby systems with a system copy".
Please suggest the best practise or the procedure for creating standby database for SAP ERP 6.0 system. Iam not looking at the steps for creating a pure oracle 10g standby database, but with SAP instances as well.
    Thanks in advance.
    CVS

    Hi,
Please refer the below mentioned link for configuring data guard.
    http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/10g/server.101/b10823/create_ps.htm
Below mentioned are the sequence of stpes, which needs to be followed for setting up data guard.
    3.1 Configuring the Primary Database
3.1.1 Enable archiving and define a local archiving destination
    3.1.2 Create a password file
3.1.3 Configuring the Oracle networking files
3.1.4 Set initialization parameters on the primary database
3.1.5 Take Offline/Online backup of the primary database
3.1.6 Create a control file for the standby database
3.1.7 Prepare initialization parameter file for the standby database and start the primary database with the changed pfile.
3.1.8 Copy all files from the primary host to the standby host
    3.2 Configuring the Standby Database
3.2.1 Configuring the Oracle networking files
3.2.2 Create a INIT parameter file for the standby database
3.2.3 Copy the standby controlfile to the appropriate location
    3.2.4 Create Oracle Password File
3.2.5 Start the physical standby database
    3.2.6 Initiate log apply services

  • CCMS MAIL ALERT FOR STANDBY DATABASE

    Hi All,
I've configured the CCMS alert monitor in my entire landscape & I'm successfully getting alert mails from CCMS alert monitor (T-codes involved are RZ20 & RZ21).
I want to activate the same functionality for my standby database. At least I want to configure the CCMS alert monitor for File System Utilization in my Standby database.
Can any one guide me about the configuration setting for file system utilization in Standby Database through CCMS monitor.
    Regards,
    Neehir Bhatt

    Hi,
    Highlevel steps:
    - Install the sapccm4x agent on the standby host
    - Register the agent to the CEN
    - In the agent home directory create a file like oscolfilter.ini In this file enter the filesystems you would like to monitor
    - Add the oscolfilter.ini file into the sapccmsr.ini file This is also located in the agent home directory
    - Create a MTE for filesystem monitoring in your CEN. Add the relevant monitor attribute there.
    - Assign autoreaction via RZ21
For more information, see OSS Note 522453 - RZ20: Monitoring operating system data
