I have a coupld of additional questions relating to this. I've logged an SR with Oracle support to get their veiw of the whole process (and these questions)... I was just wondering what people's opinions here were;
1) 11.5.10.2 patch pre-reqs - would they have to be applied on the TRU64 server before exporting the database or could they be done on Solaris?
2) Are there any issues with running the 11.5.10.2 patch against an $APPL_TOP that's already at 11.5.10.2?

Oracle have just come back on the SR and advised that the aproach detailed is not corrent! They are advising;
o do such upgrade and migration, please perform the following steps:
1. Migrate the application tier from HP TRU64 to Solaris using the following document:
NOTE.238276.1 Migrating to Linux with Oracle Applications Release 11i
2. Migrate the 9.2.0.8 database from HP TRU64 to Solaris using the following document:
NOTE.230627.1 9i Export/Import Process for Oracle Applications Release 11i
3. Upgrade the application from 11.5.9 to 11.5.10.2 using the following document:
NOTE.316365.1 Oracle Applications Release 11.5.10.2 Maintenance Pack
4. Upgrade the database from 9.2.0.8 to 10.2.0.3 using the following document:
NOTE.362203.1 Oracle Applications Release 11i with Oracle 10g Release 2
Which is a lot more steps (indeed merging APPL_TOP to go from 2 to 1 server being one ofg them).

Oracle DB upgrade path

Hi Experts,
I have some questions about the upgrade of oracle db.
my current version is oracle 8.0.5, we plan to upgrade it to 11.2.
But as I checked in the upgrade guide Upgrade to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2).pdf, this is valid from 10.2 to 11.2,
and regarding the upgrade document Upgrade to Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2), this is valid from 9.2.0.6 to 10.2
and if we want to upgrade to 9.2.0.6, we need upgrade from 8.1.7, but currently we are 8.0.5
so, my question is, per SAP's official suggestions, do we need to upgrade from 8.0.5 to 8.1.7 and then to 9.2 and then 10.2 and then 11.2?
the second question is, how can we upgrade it? do we need system copy (export and then import which is load based method)?
the third question is, can we upgrade the db directly on PRD system or it must be exported from the PRD system and then import to a new system?
the fourth question is, will it be donw at downtime or uptime? if downtime, how long it will be?

You should upgrade oracle 8.0.5 to 8.0.6 first, then oracle 8.0.6 to oracle 9.2.0.8 and in last upgrade it to oracle 11g. More information, you can check from SAP note 1431797.

You need to use oracle tool DBUA and Runinstaller to upgrade not system copy tools.

Upgrade will take place in downtime phase. Downtime depends upon system resources. I would suggest you to first do the test upgrade in your sandbox system. Then do development, quality and upgrade in step wise manner.

No. If the environment would be wrong the system wouldn´t start up.
Core dumps are in 99 % of the cases program errors (in the SAP kernel or in an interface (libdbora*)), misaligend accesses of data etc.
If you encounter such an error have a look in the C-Stack. If you can´t see where the error is happening opening an OSS call. Most of those errors are fixed by installing the latest patches for the kernel and the database interface.

Is there any possibility that we run 2 Instances of 11i
1.Production and
2.Upgradation Instance.
Production stay live as we perform up gradation on other instance. But both servers have same updated data in Databases.
After up gradation completes we just shut down Production and Live Up-grade Instance.

After up gradation completes we just shut down Production and Live Up-grade Instance. This cannot be implemented as you are going to have live transactions during the upgrade, and you will need to have those transactions/data in the upgraded instance.

Issue : There are around 130 hidden parameter appear after Oracle 11gR2 upgrade.
Before upgrade I have commented the hidden parameters on the PFILE. PFILE only to start the database for the Oracle 11gR2 upgrade.
Before upgrade, checking the hidden parameter:

I just came across a similar case: 1 (just one) of our (RAC-) databases has 130-something underscore-parameters set to non-default values.
version is still 11.1.0.7 (e.g. not 11gR2).
All of those hidden parameters seem to be CBO related (list on request).
Weird is: Only one of our (very similar, supposedly same-config) databases have these hidden parameters set.
Colleagues justly wonder: Who, When, What has caused these parameters to be expliclty set for this one system?
Note: we do not have the complete history of this system documented (systems have been managed by 3 different parties already).
It is quite possible they came in with some patch or upgrade (catupgr?) somewhere between 11.1.0.1 and 11.1.0.7, but a confirmation would be nice.

Pros and Cons af Oracle 10g upgrade to 11g

Hi Basis Expert,
We have an requirement of SAP upgrade which includes BW 3.5, CRM and R/3 (4.7).
These components needs to be upgraded to the latest version
BW 3.5 to BI 7.0
R/3 (4.7) to ECC 6.0
and also CRM upgrade to the new version
The OS used is AIX and DB used is oracle 10g.
Can anybody share the pros and cons of oracle DB upgrade from 10g to 11g after SAP upgrade.

Oracle 11g upgrade: How to update stale statistics for sys and sysman?

Hi,
I am in the process of testing Oracle 11g upgrade from Oracle 10.2.0.3. I have run utlu111i.sql on the 10g database.
The utility utlu111i.sql reports about the stale statistics for SYS and SYSMAN components.
I executed dbms_stats.gather_dictionary_stats; dbms_stats.gather_schema_stats('SYS'); and dbms_stats.gather_schema_stats('SYSMAN');
After that the utlu111i.sql still reports the stale statistics for sys and sysman. Does anyone know how to get rid off this warning successfully?

Oracle 10 upgrade - Primary & standby database

Hi Expert,
I need some information on your project experience. We're currently planning a oracle 10 upgrade. Have a few question:
1. We're planning to upgrade the primary database first and a week later the standby database. Will the archive log which is sent from primary to standby database will still work? Will the recovery still work?
2. Is this the right patch to go 10.2.0.4? I'm currently on 4.7 ext 2
3. Will there be a performance issue known of oracle 10 running on 32-bit machine, since it has the limitation of the memory (3G). Do I need to set AWE option on windows?

please let me go more in detail with some of your comments.

This statement is wrong. You can't do a rolling upgrade with a physical standby database. You have to convert the database to a logical standby database .. and then you can perform a rolling upgrade. But if you have done the conversion, it is not a physical anymore.

Data Guard SQL Apply (logical standby database) is required in order to perform a database rolling upgrade. You can also do a rolling upgrade when starting with a physical standby by temporarily converting the physical standby to a logical standby. If starting with 11g, see the Rolling Database Upgrades for Physical Standby Databases using Transient Logical Standby 11g paper for details on doing a rolling upgrade when starting with a physical standby. In this point you are almost correct, because of a standard SAP system is not using the unsupported data types, etc. (afaik)

I know many people have done this upgrade successfully but i have yet to find a complete upgrade document for solaris.

One thing that is rarely included in the upgrade documentation, but it is quite useful for a smooth upgrade, is how to start utilizing the new 11g features from the very start. For instance, 11g introduced extended statistics, a very powerful feature, but the upgrade documentation does not say what to do to effectively use that feature in your upgrade. DBAs eventually get to them, but only after being prompted by slow SQLs. It does not have to be like that.

If you are looking for Web Dispatcher patch upgradation..here is the procedure
Download SAP Web Dispatcher latest version based on your OS.
1) This is available on SAP Service Marketplace at http://service.sap.com/patches:
                    Support Packages and Patches
                    -> Entry by Application Group
                    -> Additional Components
                    -> SAP Kernel
                    -> SAP Kernel 32 Bit or SAP Kernel 64 Bit
                    -> SAP Kernel 7.00 nn Bit
                    -> Operating system platform
                    -> "Database independent
                    The package is called sapwebdisp_<.....>.sar
2) Shutdown your SAP system and take the kernel backup.
3) Uncar the file sapwebdisp_<....>.sar and copy the content to the kernel directory
4) Start the SAP system

I believe you are on Functional side. If that is the case, you only need to know whats new in ECC 6.0 compared to ECC 5.0.
A quick look at http://erp.fmpmedia.com/Default.aspx?alias=erp.fmpmedia.com/english will give you a fair idea. However, you need to read in SAP Help too before jumping on to upgrade.
An upgrade means, you need to make sure old features remain and new are added.
