Oracle 9i runInstaller is useless

Can someone please tell me how to get the Oracle9i runInstaller program to work.
I am at the end of my tether now as you may have guessed by the title of this post.
I am running Slackware 8.0 and all of the software packages (glibc, ld.so, make etc etc) are within spec according to the documentation.
The runInstaller program dies with the following message:-
unix > /cdrom/install/linux/runInstaller

I have no java installed at all on the machine so there cannot be any clashes with installed packages.
I'm getting to the stage where I'm about to bin Oracle9i and go back to 8i (which had a sensible, curses based installer).
If someone wishes to contact me directly then I have no problem with that---anything---just tell me how to run this damn program!
Alastair

Although you are using a different Linux, I found Werner Puschitz's document at http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.html most helpfull when installing 9i onto RedHat 7.2. The same steps may work for your installation.

  • Re:Oracle 9i runInstaller SIGSEGV's - (Similar problem)

I am running Redhat 6.2 with upgraded kernel 2.2.19 and upgraded
    GLibc 2.1.3-22 libraries.
    Using JDK 1.3.
runInstaller always seg faults with SIGSEGV 11 after answering
    questions for DAD port.
The above solution did not work nor was it an option. However,
it was tried and javakey never seg faulted. The install
    continues to fail.
Help with this matter would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Update on runInstaller segfaulting.
    Problem
    jre version 1.1.8v3 seg faults.
    I will assume that:
    A. You've downloaded jre-1.1.8 from blackdown (or mirror)
    B. Unpacked it under /usr/local and linked /usr/local/java to
    the jre118 directory under /usr/local
    C. Added /usr/local/java/bin to your PATH
    Problem verification
To verify that we are talking about the same problem run
the '/usr/local/java/bin/javakey' tool (bundled with jre)
without any params. It should dump the registers and segfault.
If it does, we are talking about the same problem.
runInstaller should be segfaulting with pretty much identical
    jvm dump.
    Solution
The problem of runInstaller segfaulting on systems with newer
libc versions is that jre 1.1.8 v3 expects locale data files to
be present in /usr/share/locale (or /usr/local/share/locale).
    ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions
    /slackware-8.0/d1/glocale.tgz
may be used to grab a tar-ball that contains the appropriate
locale information. The tar ball can be unzipped with the
    following shell command:
    # gunzip -c glocale.tgz | (cd /; tar -xvf - )
    Verify solution
run '/usr/local/java/bin/javakey' ... It should no longer
segfault (you should get the command-line help for javakey)
Try running runInstaller from your favourite Oracle media
    location

  • Oracle 11g1 runInstaller crashes

    Hi,
I'm having a very strange problem installing Oracle 11g1 on a RHEL 5 system. Every time I start the installer, it performs the system checks and when it goes to launch the OUI it crashes. I get the message to "please wait..." and then I get the command prompt once again. I'm confident that the system is up to date, I have all the dependencies, created all the user/groups and filesystems, and configured the kernel. The system has enough memory and disk space.
I've done several things in an attempt to fix the problem. I changed the temp directories to one that I know I had full permissions on. I thought it might be an Xserver issue (installer wasn't finding the display). I executed several procedures (ie. log in as root, set 'xhost +', su into oracle user, then run installer; changed the DISPLAY settings) in an attempt to fix, but all had the same result as above.
I'm at the limits of my knowledge of what to try/search for. I get no errors reported in any log files that I know to check.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I've tried using a responseFile and nothing has changed. The installer starts, checks, and crashes. The log files are exactly the same as when I didn't use the responseFile. I followed the directions for creating/using the responseFile.
I've also done an strace of the installation. I'm not too sure what I should be looking for in it. I did notice that there are a large number of missing files, but it seems like all files that are missing shouldn't exist because I haven't installed them yet. Seems like it is looking for $ORACLE_BASE/lib which doesn't exit. Maybe you can see something that I am not.

  • Oracle Forms is a useless and pointless product.

    Hi to everyone,
This is a rant on the stupidity of Oracle Forms. From my point of view, it is pointless and VERY PAINFUL to develop.
Come on, who in the right would use Oracle FORMS to develop database applications? Heck, I can develop my very own web application in Servlet and JSP twice as quick as this piece of crappy framework can produce. Who are you trying to kid? Tie down PL/SQL to the application level? The very idea of FORMS is bullshit.
To whoever who is reading this, please flame me all you want. Oracle Forms is a crappy product. Dont't waste your time and efforts using it. You are better off using some other MORE PRODUCTIVE framework. So there.

I have seen many threads speaking about forms future but discussions were also MORE PRODUCTIVE as your framework
pointless ? I think your thread is pointless...
I will not make the pro-forms against the world... There are so many tools, just make the right choice for your needs.
so go back to your fantastic productive framework and have success with it.

If yes, then I suspect you are logged on as root and su'd to Oracle to do the install. Better would be to log out of root and create a brand new screen (X) session as Oracle.

  • Oracle Database 10g relase 1 Installation Problem on RHEL 3 ES

    Dear all
I'm trying to install oracle database 10g r1 X86_64 on Intel Xeon Machine with EM64T technology with RHEL 3 ES update 2 X86_64 edition. The problem is described below :
Oracle OUI .runInstaller collapsed with such a following error:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the
    VM.
    Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=0x8077470

Is there anyone can help me ??

Check pushitz website and ensure that you have all the required rpms installed properly.
Check the log files in the installation directory. That should give some more details as to what exactly is going on.

  • Oracle 8i Installation problem on Windows 2000

I had purchased a Oracle8i (MS/Windows NT CD (E-Commerce), part Number A94674-01 in the month of Jun 2000.
When I tried to install Oracle 8i personal edition of Windows 2000 ver.
The installation got completed smoothly. But after that I was not able to start my database and even Windows 2000 crashed after that. After every crash I reinstalled windows 2000 and oracle 8i but the result was same. My whole purpose of purchasing Oracle 8i on windows 2000 is getting defeated.
I would request you send me solution what to do ? Or replace my Oracle S/W. Its useless for me right now.
    My M/C configuration is
Dell P-III (256 MB, 300 Mhz) with sound card.
20 GB Hard Disk of 7200 rpm.
The primary O/S is Windows 98.
The Hard disk is partitioned into no. Of logical drives.
    They are like 2GB of each (C, D, E, F) and G 10 GB
C part ion has got Windows. And G has got windows 2000. There is enough space in all part ions.
I would appreciate if you can solve my problem as soon as possible.
    Sincerely,
    Shekhar

  • JRE not found, while installing Oracle 9i on Fedora Core 5

I am installing Oracle 9i on Fedora Core 5 from the following site.
    http://ivan.kartik.sk/oracle/install_ora9_fedora.html
The site asks me to Download the Java Runtime Enviroment (j2re-1_3_1_15-linux-i586.bin) from the Sun website.
extract the file and put it in /opt directory. And edit Disk1/install/linux/oraparam.ini and modify JRE_LOCATION variable to /opt/jre1.3.xx
I have downloaded JRE version jre1.3.1_19 as this is the version available from the sun site, and put it in the /opt directory.
    [oracle@localhost Disk1]$ cd /opt
    [oracle@localhost opt]$ ls -l
    total 24
    drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Aug 19 2006 jre1.3.1_19
    My oraparam.ini settings are:
    [oracle@localhost ~]$ cat Disk1/install/linux/oraparam.ini
    [Oracle]
    JRE_LOCATION=/opt/jre1.3.1_19
However, after doing these changes when I use /home/oracle/Disk1/runInstaller, i get the following error:
    [oracle@localhost Disk1]$ pwd
    /home/oracle/Disk1
    [oracle@localhost Disk1]$ ./runInstaller
[oracle@localhost Disk1]$ The Java RunTime Environment was not found at /tmp/OraInstall2008-04-29_07-09-15AM/jre/bin/java. Hence, the Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run.
Please visit http://www.javasoft.com and install JRE version 1.3.1 or higher and try again.

I am trying to use my pet cat as a boat and it doesn't work either. That's because, just like the OP, you are not taking the right approach. You simply need to MODIFY the cat - in your case, by adding a few things: a keel, ribs, hull, mast, sails, rudder, tiller (to name a few).
Similarly, OP needs to MODIFY Snow Leopard by adding the appropriate infrastructure, executables, and configuration to meet the install requirements. Just because that implies a different kernel and system libs doesn't mean it can't be done.

  • Can not open database control in oracle 11g r2, listener issues

    Hi,
I installed Oracle 11g r2 database on my laptop for testing. at beginning everything was fine and working. 2 days later i am unable to run oracle database control.. i get page not found!
I tried all the tricks and read almost 200 pages from oracle documentation, none of this was even close to help!
(by the way oracle documentation is a fail in my opinion, it really tend to complicate things so much and talk about things not related to what a developer want to read about, its even hard for professional programmer to keep up with this, I started to hate dealing with Oracle before even going deep!!)
I tried deleting database and creating new database i get the following warning:
    - Enterprise manager configuration failed due to the following error:
listener is not up or database service is not registered with it. start listener and register database service.. etc.
Some how after few hours the control is working but the database is not there, and it shows that the listener is up, but database is down.
I tried creating a new database, but i get the error above (it seems its created but not linked to listener!!)
I guess what triggered this error is running xampp, i was also working in php project and ran xampp for test, since then oracle is corrupted!
any help would be appreciated (please don't send me links to oracle documentation because its useless and not straight to the point)
    Regards

    Hi
    thank you for the reply
I assume i should do this through SQL plus?
anyway, now am getting new error: ORA-00020: maximum number of processes (150) exceeded
I get this error when trying to login to SQL plus, or create/configure database.
I tried deleting oracle 11g via universal installer i get message saying run the command c:\...dbhome_1\deinstall\deinstall
I don't understand Oracle totally collapsed in my laptop with no reason

  • Can't install Oracle 9i on RHEL4

    Hello,
I'm trying to install oracle 9.2.0.4 on a Linux Red Hat 4 server (32 bits), which already hosts Oracle 10g.
runInstaller displays errors during the linking phase :
"Error in invoking target ctx_on of makefile $ORACLE_HOME/rdmbs/lib/ins_rdbms.mk"
"Error in invoking target sdo_on of makefile $ORACLE_HOME/rdmbs/lib/ins_rdbms.mk"
I've tried to follow all recommandations on this website : http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.shtml
and I tried the following tricks to solve the problem :
Edit the file $ORACLE_HOME/ctx/lib/env_ctx.mk, go to "INSO_LINK =", and add a "$(LDLIBFLAG)dl" to the line and save it.
Here is the full line with the added "$(LDLIBFLAG)dl" flag:
    INSO_LINK = -L$(CTXLIB) $(LDLIBFLAG)m $(LDLIBFLAG)dl $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ca $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_fa $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ex $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_da $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ut $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ch $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_fi $(LLIBCTXHX) $(LDLIBFLAG)c -Wl,-rpath,$(CTXHOME)lib $(CORELIBS) $(COMPEOBJS)
After that hit retry in the error popup.
    -> didn't work
If this didn't work, then try the following:
Edit the file $ORACLE_HOME/ctx/lib/env_ctx.mk again, go to "INSO_LINK =", remove the above entry you made and add a "`cat $(LIBHOME)/sysliblist`" to the line and save it.
Here is the full line with the added "`cat $(LIBHOME)/sysliblist`" string:
    INSO_LINK = -L$(CTXLIB) $(LDLIBFLAG)m `cat $(LIBHOME)/sysliblist` $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ca $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_fa $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ex $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_da $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ut $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ch $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_fi $(LLIBCTXHX) $(LDLIBFLAG)c -Wl,-rpath,$(CTXHOME)lib $(CORELIBS) $(COMPEOBJS)
After that hit retry in the error popup.
    -> didn't work
Edit the file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh and change the following line:
    LD_SELF_CONTAINED="-z defs"
    to read:
    LD_SELF_CONTAINED=""
After that run the script $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh as the user "oracle"
    I got this :
    ./genclntsh
    Created /oracle/product/9.2/lib/libclntst9.a
    but runInstaller is still stuck
In the make.log, I get this message :
    /usr/bin/make -f ins_rdbms.mk ctx_on ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/product/9.2
make: *** no rule to make target /oracle/product/9.2/rdbms/lib/kciwcx.o, needed by ctx_on. Stop
I don't know what else to do.
    Can anybody plesae help ?
    thank you

    amd64_db_9204_Disk1.cpio
    amd64_db_9204_Disk2.cpio
    amd64_db_9204_Disk3.cpio

  • What's wrong with my Oracle Database Installation?

    Hi,
I'm trying to install Oracle Database 11gR2 on a newly-created Oracle Linux 5.7 64-bit system. There's 25GB of available harddrive space and about 1700MB free RAM.
I followed everything in this guide:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2InstallationOnEnterpriseLinux5.php
To begin my installation, I log into user "oracle" and do the following:
         1) Unzip linux.x64_11gR2_database_1of2.zip and linux.x64_11gR2_database_2of2.zip to create the directory /home/oracle/database
         2) Set up my response file (a copy can be found at http://x.petio.org/2011/11/30/db.rsp)
         3) Run the installer:
              /home/oracle/database/runInstaller –silent –responseFile /path/to/db.rsp
    The result is:
[FATAL] [INS-32038] The operating system group specified for central inventory (oraInventory) ownership is invalid.
CAUSE: User performing installation is not a member of the operating system group specified for central inventory(oraInventory) ownership.
ACTION: Specify an operating system group that the installing user is a member of. All the members of this operating system group will have write permission to the central inventory directory (oraInventory).
Could someone please tell me what this error means, and what I'm doing wrong? The group for oraInventory is "oinstall" and user "oracle" (the user doing the installation) is certainly a member of that group. When I run "id" I get the following: "uid=502(oracle) gid=505(oinstall) groups=503(dba),504(asmadmin),505(oinstall),506(oper)"
    Here's the log files:
         http://x.petio.org/2011/11/30/installActions2011-11-30_09-19-27AM.log

    Hi;
Nevermind I figured it out. My UNIX_GROUP_NAME was set to "oracle" and should have been "oinstall".Nice to hear ;) Thanks for sharing soluiton,if it possible when u belive your thread has been answered, it pretend to lose time of other forums user while they are searching open question which is not answered, thanks for understanding
