Original Apple TV Unit Capable To Rent Movies?

I bought Apple TV when it was first released. Since the recent movie rental announcement through iTunes to Apple TV I can't seem to find the rental section on the Apple TV menu. Is there a software update to come or do I need to buy a newer version of the Apple TV unit?
What am I missing here?
Thanks!

We are all waiting for the software update. Should be available by the end of January. We hope.
You don't need a new Apple TV.

Apple TV will not play rented movies. Says it is being played on another device, which it is not. Downloaded movie via iTunes on my iMac.
I've tried restoring the TV, updating my iTunes - nothing is working. It is definitely not playing on my computer.

Sign in to your iTunes account settings on the computer (click on the AppleID top right if you're actually signed in).
In your purchase list find the purchase and use the 'Report a problem' link to tell the store.
Assume you've not moved the rental to another device where it resides but is not being played.

  • Apple TV good option for renting movies?

I'm thinking of getting the Apple TV and one of the things I'd be looking to do on it would be to rent movies.  Is it a good option for renting movies?  If so, is there a huge selection of rentals?  Any help or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

There is plenty to choose from with New Releases and a decent back catalogue. It all depends on what you're looking for. Time it takes to load depends on your network (2.5mbps for SD, 6mbps for instant 720P, 8mbps for 1080P). It will be 'ready to play' once enough has loaded in order to play without interuption.

  • Apple tv freezes when playing rented movies

This is a new issue for me. Every time I rented a movie from the Apple TV(3Gn) the movie doesn't download or freezes. Sometimes the Apple TV restart by itself. Also when I play movie trailers, sometimes it doesn't download the trailer completely.  I ran a speedtest and the downloads are above 20Gbps. By the other hand, Nexflix runs excellent without any problems at all. Please I need help to fix this situation. Thanks!

That may indicate interference. Netflix adapts to the connection whereas iTunes content is fixed. First try rebooting ATV and router. Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network).
If on wifi try ethernet. Go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report, look for signal strength and noise.

  • Rented movie not playing. I have 81Mbps Internet and can stream anything else HD. it's not WiFi either because signal strength is full and I can view anything other than rented movies on apple TV unit. it charges me for renting but doesn't play

Rented "Gone Girl" on apple tv. It charges me, but will not play for more than 4 seconds at a time. I have exercised every step of apple's troubleshooting and nothing fixes the problem. I have a very strong, steady 81 Mbps Internet connection speed and can stream any other HD through the apple tv except for this rented movie. This is not the first time this has happened either. I just gave apple $6 for free and am currently watching the movie streaming through my cable provider's on demand channel with ease. Oh yeah, and when I seek apple support for the issue, apple wants $2 just to contact someone! Give me my money back please and I will never attempt to use your poor tv service again.

The limitation of approximately 200 titles has been discussed before, we can't be sure whether it will be something that gets fixed or not. I'm not really sure what your other issues are, if I use search instead of lists, I find whatever I want and am able to rent or purchase subject to those options being available for that particular title.

  • RENTED MOVIES STREAMING TO APPLE TV

I rented a movie on my IMAC which is streaming to my husbands Apple TV via broadband. The Apple TV is synced with my husbands ITunes Library. All of my library appears on the Apple TV menu; however the rented movie does not appear. When I click on "Devices" in my Itunes and click on "Apple TV" I have a "summary" tab and a "Photos" tab, but NO "Movies" tab. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Rented movies can only exist in one place at a time due to digital right management - this is to stop you say putting a copy on a TV, iPod, iPhone simultaneously.
iTunes should have a new tab for rented movies that lets you transfer the rental tyo one of these devices.
Are you talking about a single iTunes library with a single store account? If so the movie should be able to transfer to AppleTV (and back again) via iTunes provided it's set up as a sync library.
If iTunes is a Shared library you only see the summary and Photo tabs, and content won't be seen on AppleTV when computer is off or iTunes closed down.

  • More cables needed to run Rented Movies

I was pretty excited about the Apple update and rented my first movie this past Saturday afternoon. That evening I came home, sat down with my favorite beverage, some snacks and hit "Play Now" only to get a message that said something to the nature that DVI is not compatible and I need composite or component video cables. WHAT!!!! My movie would not play. I headed out to a local box store and picked up some cheap video cables, disconnected my DVI cable and I was able to watch my movie. My $3.99 movie cost me around $20.00. Can someone answer why DVI is not compatible or have I missed something in the set up. As a result of using the new cables the quality is far worse than DVI.
Get this I can watch the trailers with the DVI and everything else with Apple TV but not a rented movie.

My HDMI cable has to go round a corner to get around the shelf to the tv, does that mean it won't work

  • Hi, I am trying to transfer my rented movie to my iphone

Hi, I am trying to transfer my rented movie to my iphone but cannot see it in the vides folder on my iphone. I have done this a few times & have never had a problem before. Please help me

    Hello there, lorettafromqld.
The following Knowledge Base article is a great resource on transferring rented content to your iOS device:
How to rent a movie from the iTunes Store on your computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1390
To rent movies from the iTunes Store on your computer
In iTunes on your computer, click iTunes Store.
In the iTunes Store, find a movie you want to rent.
Click Rent. Your rental should begin to download immediately.
Once the rental is downloaded, you can watch it on your computer or transfer the rental to a supported iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV (1st generation):
Connect the device and select it in iTunes.
    Click the Movies button.
Select the movie, and then click Move.
After all movies have been moved, click Apply in the lower-right corner of iTunes.
You must be connected to the Internet to transfer a rented movie.
    Additional Information
After you transfer a rental, it is removed from your iTunes library.
You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only be played on one device at a time.
Pairing needs to be configured to transfer a rental to Apple TV (1st generation).
For information about movie rental expiration and viewing limits and for more information about iTunes Store movie rentals, read the article iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ).
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • TS3623 Playback issue on rented movies

1st gen AppleTv.  On rented movies, I get a small black rectangle in the lower middle portion of the screen.  This started happening about 2 months ago and seems to "come and go" . Any ideas on what is causing this?

The rules are that you have 30 days to start watching the movie. As soon as you begin watching the movie you have 24 hours to finish before the movie expires. During the 24 hour rental period you can watch the movie as many times as you want. You can transfer the movie to all current generation iPods and iPhone. The software update for the Apple TV allows you to rent movies from the device without the need for a computer so you would be better off renting it from the Apple TV then iTunes on your Mac. Hope this is helpful.

  • HT1657 Can you be offline to watch your rented movie? No 4G or wifi?

Can you be offline on any of your apple devices to watch your rented movie when you decide to? No 4G or wifi?

As long as the film has been fully downloaded then you should be able to watch it whilst offline

  • Playback Terms of Rented Movies

I have some questions regarding the iTunes policies for rented movies.
    1. If I still have 29 days remaining, can I watch the movie for the first time anytime before that?
    2. If I don't watch the movie right away does anything happen?
    3. If I start to watch the movie and don't continue within 24 hours, what happens?
    4. How many times can I watch the movie within those thirty days?
    5. Can I move the movie to Apple TV ?
    6. If I start watching the movie on my iPhone, can I continue watching it on my computer or Apple TV?
Unfortunately, I have not found anything on the Apple or iTunes sites that explain any of this simply.
    Thank you

  • Rented movie  not present on Apple TV list

Just hooked up a new Apple TV yesterday. Downloaded a rented movie last night. When going to my library on the Apple TV, the movie is not present for selection. Went back to PC and movie plays fine there but in no way can I find how to get it to appear on the Apple TV. It doesn't even show the rented movie in the library list. I also have a number of home video's taken in MPEG4 that for whatever reason only one showed up in the Apple TV, library list and would play. I'm am not very PC adept and this is really bugging me. Either have to figure out what I'm doing wrong or decide to return unit before time runs out. I am running XP with SPII. I also have a ton of older home video taken in earlier format. Would I be smart to upgrade QT to "PRO" ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. ........... Hank G.

I've owned Apple PC's and devices since the original Macintosh, and have been a devoted and richly rewarded Apple stock owner since the late 90's. I still am an Apple devotee.
However, they messed up on this Apple TV and movie rental deal in a surprising manner.
Many of us buy Apple products for their simplicity of use, reliability, and beautiful design. It seems quite unlike them to have not adequately communicated this particular glitch (some of you more wonkish types enjoy browsing stuff that I, fortunately, only have to browse in the rare case of a problem such as this one).
Why would anyone have to research whether or not the Apple TV does what Apple says it does? They just DO what they say they will do, ... normally. In this case, they'll do it about two weeks or so after the release of the marketing materials and product.
This is not a failure of the consumers. Don't throw a vertebra out defending this mistake - it's not defensible. But it's also a mistake that will go away shortly.

  • HT200109 Why do all my other Apple devices not care if the movie I rented from iTunes if it was downloaded directly to that device or not, but the stupid Apple TV won't allow you to play rented movies unless you rented it directly from the Apple TV?

Why do all my other Apple devices not care if the movie I rented from iTunes if it was downloaded directly to that device or not, but the stupid Apple TV won't allow you to play rented movies unless you rented it directly from the Apple TV?
Great, so now I have to airplay it by linking my computer to my Apple TV and then the movie has to buffer! So, all that time I spent downloading the HD video has to technically "download" again by buffering. The more I use Apple TV, the more I feel like this item was not created by Apple. I don't even use it for what I originally purchased it for. If I would have known that anytime I wanted to sync a movie from my computer to Apple TV by using airplay that it would have to buffer the movie, I would have never ever ever ever ever purchased this waste of time device. So the video has to technically play all the way through one time first so Apple TV can "remember" the movie to play it back in real time afterwards.
Am I missing something here? Am I doing something wrong that can be fixing my problem? I should have known that the Apple TV had so many things backwards when simple things like when you are using the remote and you reach the bottom of your list, in order to cycle back to the top of your list you have then press the directional buton back the other way rather than most modern day devices that will automatically cycle you back to the top or to the other side when you reached the bottom or end but keep on pressing the button. That **** annoys me when I am doing a search for a movie and have to type the name in manually and have to cycle back and forth to the letters. It makes me feel like I am using a rotary phone or something!

I was told by someone to try and purchase something directly from my Apple TV and that will help authorize my Apple TV.  So I picked something that was free and it downloaded.
Then I went back to the Movie that would not work and it played just fine.
So it seemed to work.  I will have to try it on other movies and TV shows later.

  • Big Problems Browsing & Renting Movies on Apple TV

We have new problems on our Apple TV.
    1) Our "All HD" browsing only shows titles through "Batman..." (or around there);
    2) The "Top Movies" browsing only shows movie titles A partway through C (starting letter of title);
    3) When you actually use the Search option to find and rent a movie title, a whole set of movies comes through WITHOUT any option to "rent" (and these are not just the ones that aren't available publicly for rent yet; e.g. we rented "Rachel Getting Married" two months ago on our Apple TV - now it shows up as only being available to buy...no rental option at all, regular or HD). It seems that the rental option only shows up for the movies that are actually viewable in points #1 and 2, above.
I tried going at it through "Genres" as well - and same issues: limited viewable titles, and limited rental options (way less than what I know can actually be rented - titles you could rent a month ago don't show up with a "rent" option at all).
SO - in sum: we are stuck not being able to view/browse most movie titles (limited to A, B,and a few C titles - and a few short lists like "Just Added," etc.), and it seems that ONLY those that we can view give us the option to rent (so of course this means our rent options are extremely limited as well).
WHAT is going on (?) and can Apple please fix this ASAP...the whole point of having Apple TV is to be able to easily download movies directly from the TV/Apple remote...I hope Apple isn't now requiring people to go back into iTunes to do this...that would take forever to download and THEN Synch on top of that.
This really needs to be fixed. (and FYI we checked for new Apple TV software downloads, says we're up to date; we checked for other updates - all OK; and we even unplugged the Apple TV unit and started it back up again...none of this helped)
Apple: please please respond to this. It's frustrating that this problem has been posted about several times already, and absolutely no response from Apple (on these discussion boards or in terms of providing a fix for this).
    Thanks.

The limitation of approximately 200 titles has been discussed before, we can't be sure whether it will be something that gets fixed or not. I'm not really sure what your other issues are, if I use search instead of lists, I find whatever I want and am able to rent or purchase subject to those options being available for that particular title.

  • How do I view a movie I rented and downloaded to my computer on my apple TV. The ATV is not seeing the rented movie in my shared itunes library? I can't seem to transfer the rental to the ATV from the computer!

How do I view a movie I rented and downloaded to my computer on my apple TV. The ATV is not seeing the rented movie in my shared itunes library? I can't seem to transfer the rental to the ATV from the computer!

    Dear friends,
Thank you for responding to my problem so promptly. Frankly, I did not expect to hear from people so soon! The fact is that as soon as I posted the question, I was shown a number of similar queries and managed to find the answer. I have to say it's not intuitive! I have an apple TV original version. Apparently I had the ATV on streaming and not syncing. Streaming does not allow you to stream a rental from your computer whereas you can sync and transfer the rental from the computer!
    Thanks again.
