OS 10.7.2 Lion: Software Update or App Store?

It looks like the update 10.7.2 is imminent for access to iCloud. It would be interesting to see if the update comes via Software Update or via the App Store. I am SO looking forward to it!

My guess is that the delta will come via Software Update.   The full installer at the .2 level in the app store.
Guess we'll see shortly.

  • Mountain Lion software update on App store

Hi, when i select software update it now directs me to the app store update page, is this the way it is supposed to work?

is everything like Java or things from other companies that support Mac functioning going to come the same way through the app store?
and how will we see what updates we decided not to do? will there still be a list to do them later?
what about "Automatic Updates"? still available?
this was a surprise to me...

Hi Tim, your problem sounds a bit different, if you're not getting the wrong Apple ID thing, it may get more help to post a new query of your own.

  • HT5362 How do I turn off notifications for Software Updates? 'App Store' doesn't show in the list of notification apps. I want the background checks for updates, just not the notifications.

How do I turn off notifications for Software Updates?
In the 'Notifications' section of the 'System Preferences' app, there is no tab for managing the notifications of System Updates nor App Store.
Hey--- I like auto-checking for updates, and hey--- I like auto-downloading them in the background.
BUT I do not like being notified of updates in the middle of working! Especially when it's iTunes updates. Grrrr.
Any chance this is easy and I just missed it?

  • HT1338 And why we need both Software Update and App Store in Mac OS X 10.8?

Since clicking Software Update brings the App Store anyway

Apple's recommendation is a broadband connection but not one with restrictions.
Here's why. Your profile indicates you have v10.8 Mountain Lion installed.
If at some point you need to reformat, repair, or restore OS X, that can definitely take more than 30 minutes. To restore OS X alone takes about 45 minutes with a high speed internet connection.
Requirements for reinstalling OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
"Reinstalling OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion via OS X Recovery requires broadband access to the Internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the Internet from Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation."

  • Software Update and App Store both are failing on me

I've got an Imac Intel Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Internet runs fine, everything runs fine, except for 2 things.
              1) Can't use Software Update
              2) Can't sign in to the App Store
Have had problem number 1 for at least a year, and have done a clean install of the operating system, but to no avail.
I was hoping that Lion was going to fix this problem, but I can't use the App Store, so I'm in a bit of a jam, and hoping somebody can shed some light on the problem.
If I run Software Update from the Apple Menu, I get an error message saying there is a network problem.
              https://skitch.com/markdavidmccreary/fmq7s/software-update
I'm surfing the net just fine, so Software Update is the only app having a problem.
I read a report from Glenn Fleishman having a similar problem, and he quoted Kirk McElhearn, with this advice.
I solved this on the Mac Pro with advice from regular Macworld contributor Kirk McElhearn. He suggested launching Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access, then selecting Preferences. In the Certificates tab, I set OCSP and CRL to Off. These two items are designed to prevent forged or revoked digital certificates used to confirm a valid identity from being used. It’s risky, but disabling that setting enabled me to download purchases to my laptop. The things I do for Apple!
I've tried that, but no luck.
When I try to sign in to the App Store, nothing happens.  I'm expecting some sort of login dialog, but nothing appears on my screen.
Does anybody have any hints on troubleshooting this ?
    Thanks
    mark

I am experiencing the same issue when connecting thru Airport.  HOWEVER, when directly connected thru Ethernet, it seems to work ok.
    I basically bypassed the router.
One MIGHT think it is a router issue... however, I bought a brand new router and new cables, and have the same problem.
Bypassing the router is not an permanent fix for me, as I have other computers, printers, Ipads and phones that depend on the wireless router.

  • All software updates in App Store say "Waiting..."

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and everything looked good. I opened software update and it told me I had some updates, and took me to the App Store to do them. I updated Numbers and Pages successfully, but then it told me I had some other software updates to do -- iPhoto 9.3.2, MacBook Pro EFI Firmware update 2.7, MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5, Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.0 and iMovie 9.0.7. I hit "Update All," and a few messages popped up about the firmware updates requiring a restart and that the screen would turn gray and I should leave it the heck alone and don't unplug the charger. Ok. Got it.
But the computer never restarted; the status on all of the updates changed to "Waiting..." and that is all. It's been about 15 minutes and still nothing. I tried to quit the app store thinking that would cancel the updates, but I get a message telling me the app store can't be quit until the OS updates are completed.
Do I need to try to restart the computer on my own? I'm afraid to force shut down because I know firmware updates are serious business. But it seems like it is taking an awful long time for the computer to restart on its own. I don't have any other programs running.
    Thanks for any help!

Force quitting the App Store during a software update download deletes any partial downloads already initiated. There is no way to pause a software update in Mountain Lion, which is a huge, glaring problem for anyone with a MacBook/MacBook Pro. If I'm in the middle of a large software update download, I can either force quit the App Store and lose any partial download or wait until the download is finished, which could be a long time if its a multi-gigabyte update. The whole point of having a laptop is the ability to take it with you and anything that prevents that ability must be changed.

  • HT1338 What about open source, etc. apps?  Integration of Software Update into App Store, Apple registration a problem?

A review in the Seattle Times recently indicated that in Mountain Lion all apps would have to be registered with Apple.  I use lots of 3rd party apps, many open source, that are unlikely to be willing to pay Apple to register.  I've been anxious about upgrading to Mountain Lion for this reason.
The description in the Mountain Lion promo suggests to me that my concern may be inappropriate.  It looks like they've basically migrated Software Update into the App Store.  For most of the 3rd party stuff, Software Update is irrelevant.  As long as I can manage my 3rd party apps as I have traditionally done (some I never update, others notify me of needed updates when I use them - they check themselves), I don't mind if Apple has repositioned its automated update service for more mainstream apps including its own.
Have I got this right, or should I be concerned about support for 3rd party apps and their maintenance?

    You are right. No concern.

  • 10.9.4 installed, now Software Update and App Store won't open

    Ahoy.
I installed the 10.9.4 update and now Software Update and the App Store won't open.  I don't know what other information might be relevant here.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Software update from App Store

A co-worker installed a paid version of FC on my computer.
He no longer works here but he left his copy on my machine
I don't mind keeping it (not much use for it, but you never know)
now FC wants to update itself
and since I don't have his Apple ID, I can't do it, of course
(not that I would want to anyway)
How do I get rid of the Update alert in my App Store
without trashing FC all together ?

You can't. You will never be able to update it without access to the associated Apple ID.

  • Mac OS X Lion Software Update service does not reflect 10.7.1 update

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded my Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard server to 10.7.
Everything went ok, and the server tools are installed and working.
Last week, Apple released the 10.7.1 update, but this update is not reflected in the Lion Server's Software Update service.
Every time I start the catalog sync (either in the Server Admin app, or through Terminal), the sync process completes correctly without any errors, but the latest 10.7.1 update is not listed in the available updates.
Did I miss something there ?
Thanks in advance for your help,

    Additional info:
I followed KBase art HT4771, and made the following changes:
    1. Stopped the Software Update Service and quit Server Admin app
    2. Updated /etc/swupd/swupd.plist to begin hosting OS X Lion software updates by typing the following Terminal command:
    sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'add :otherCatalogs:2 string index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog' /etc/swupd/swupd.plist
    3. Updated /etc/swupd/swupd.conf to allow OS X Lion computers to receive updates as follows:
         "RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Darwin/11
         RewriteRule ^/index\.sucatalog$ /index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
    became
         "RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Darwin/11
         RewriteRule ^/index\.sucatalog$ /index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
After completing this and restarted the Software Update Service, the Server's Software Update Service could find all updates, including Mac OS X 10.7.1 and more Lion updates (Multi-lingual voices, Server Essentials, ... ).
The issue is now that the client computers cannot find the Software Update server, though it is properly connected, regardless the selected catalog in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.
I am now considering to erase all updates from server, delete all config files, and restart service from scratch.
Any other idea before I start the big deletion ?

  • Mountain Lion software update problem

I have purchased Mac book pro in July 2012. I wanted to download the Mountain Lion software update. I have redeemed the same from the Mac store. The downloading icon has appeared but it does not seem to be progressing...what could be the problem??

In the past,  I have taken certain larger upgrades from apple at non-peak hours (magically everything was installed quickly) other times I have taken large upgrades from apple at peak hours ( I took forever and I questioned what is going on) this could be the issue.  "server load" or your ISP (internet service provider)
    * peak hours (when a lot of people are off work down loading the newest os or applications)

  • When I go to update my software using the app store download, it always asks for the previous user's ID, not mine.  Please help!

When I go to update my software using the app store download, it always asks for the previous user's ID, not mine (my IT guy at school's-I am a faculty with admin priviledges).  I have signed in as me, have set the main preferences login user as me,and everywhere on the laptop I can use my apple ID except here.  It always shows me a greyed out ID of my IT.  How can I reset this to my ID? It doesn't give me an option to change the user ID, only a link to reset password.  I reset it, but it did not change the problem.  Can someone help me?

It's not an ID problem, it's an ownership problem.
When someone uses their personal Apple ID to buy and download content, the content is licensed to them and has their Apple ID engrained in it's DNA. It is an anti-piracy program. And when that personal Apple ID is used to setup a new Mac, it involves the Mac itself, the shipping OS and any pre-installed apps as well.
It's not the correct way to handle Macs that belong to a business or an institution. And had it been handled correctly they would not now be in this predictument needing a drastic remedy.
