OSB Catalog Media Family Attributes

Hi,
In the section about the Catalog Recovery Media Family Object, the OSB Admin Guide states that "Oracle recommends rotating backups across two volume sets", without actually saying how this might be done.
I have a backup window running from midnight to 6am, with the catalog backup taking place at midnight.
My assumption is that this rotation across two volume sets can be achieved by tweaking the write window and retain time of the OSB-CATALOG-MF media family to something like a 6 hour write window and a 24 hour retain time. Of course, I could extend the retain time out to a number of days so that I could have that many days of history, but by restricting the write window I can guarentee that I only have one catalog backup per volume set
Is my assumption correct, or is there some other way of achieving this?

Yes that's a way to do it. This way it will always use a new tape for the catalog backup, and those tapes will be kept for as long as you specify. Personally I keep one weeks worth of catalog backup tapes (so 7 tapes) just to be really safe against media problems.
So I use write window 1 day, keep volume set 6 days.

I have read about Volume set, but I believe its something that is created automatically when the backup spans to the next volume after current volume is full.

  • How to make backup image on predefined tapes (labeled to the media family)?

    Hi 2All!
How to say no to OSB 10.3 to use tapes which was not labeled to the using media family but which have lower value of slot number than labeled tapes.

Why are you pre-labeling tapes? OSB will automatically label tape with appropriate media family during the backup operation. The slot location would not effect whether OSB used the tape or not. IF you choose to pre-label tapes say to media family "foo", then the next backup operation OSB performs which is designated for that media family, OSB would select a tape as appropriate. You may want to refer to the following white paper which describes how OSB manages media:

  • OSB Catalog Sizing & Other Catalog Questions

I'm new to OSB, so was trying to find any sizing information on how much disk capacity I need to consider for the OSB catalog on my Admin/Media server.
    Obviously typical metrics like:
    ■ The number of files being backed up
    ■ The frequency and the retention period of the backups
has a direct influence on the size and growth of the catalog, but are there any formulas which can be used to estimate required capacity, based on these (or other) metrics?
Does the catalog ever get compressed (or even deduplicated) on disk during it's lifetime?
Also, are catalog backups written to tape in the same way that normal OSB backups are? And what happens if the size of the catalog exceeds a single piece of media?

    Thanks Rich,
so for the largest client you talk about, once its backup has completed and the catalog is being updated, it now needs 24 GB of space for OSB to update the host's own catalog file?
Of the 5TB of data, do you have an idea roughly how many files that might include?
Going back to my original sizing question, if I look at Veritas NetBackup Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide, for example, there are two methods described there that assist in sizing the amound of space needed for the NetBackup catalog (pages 28 - 31). Both methods use as their basis a 3180 bytes catalog size for each file retained. Do you know of a similar figure?
To your point about hosting the catalog on fast disks, are there any recommendations as to particular IO characteristics for them? For example, would hosting the catalog on an NFS share be a good idea (if it was provided on a 10 GbE connection, for example)? Or would internal disks or even LUNs from FC-SAN attached arrays be better?

    Hello,
I have an installation of OSB that worked ok until last week.
From last week, the following message started appear, and I need your help to understand if this is a physical error or it is a OSB problem:
Error: data service cannot connect to mover - error connecting to another NDMP server (NDMP client)

    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards.
    Ricardo Brambila.

Can you include an "obtool lsh -l" please? You may also want to check that you can do an "obtool pingh" to the client and media servers that are being used. Maybe a service isn't accessible.
Please confirm you are using OSB 10.3.0.3.0 from "obtar -V"
You should also not really be writing your RMAN jobs to the OSB Catalog Media Family. You should instead use its own or the RMAN-DEFAULT one.
    Thanks
    Rich

There is no problem with the OEM disk backup.
Osb user ‘ admin’ can back up data to tape(use OSB-CATALOG-MF family) ,it work well, not only General document but database file (except for the library can’t attach to //./obl0)But user ’oracle’ cannot do this 。
    it shows error:

    Folks,
Came across a problem using OSB Conditional Branch using attribute selection, it fails & is most likely a bug. It was bug in ALSB2.5 but read in forums was fixed in ALSB 2.6

What could be wrong with Xpath or is it a Bug ?
    Thanks,
    Abhijeet

    Hi Abhijeet,
Your case is re-producible. It may be a bug.
BTW, I have noticed a strange behaviour -
    1. If there is only one attribute then it works fine (<cus:lineItem actionCode="Modify")
    2. If the attribute which you want to refer in selection, is in the last then also it works fine (<cus:lineItem priorityRanking="201" quantity="1"> actionCode="Modify")
So I will suggest you to raise a case with support and meanwhile as a workaround I would suggest you to use actionCode attribute in the last of lineItem node. So your XML should be like -

  • OSB gives confusing volume information when moving tapes between libraries

    Hi,
We have an SL500 tape library as our main backup device. We also added an SL24 to the OSB domain for testing prior to installation elsewhere. We have an RMAN-FULL-MF media family, which at some point in the past had unexpired media in both libraries.
As part of the process of decommissioning the SL24 prior to shipment, I unloaded the volumes from the SL24 and imported them into the SL500. However, I may not have run the necessary OSB commands, such that OSB has up-to-date information as to where the physical media is located.
Our DBA has tried to delete some old database backups, and this has failed because the backup pieces cannot be found. However, we have a volume in the SL500, RMAN-FULL-MF-000007 which appear to contains the backup pieces (see 'lspiece' output below), but OSB thinks the volume is still in the SL24.
When I do an inventory of the SL500 I get:

This appears to indicate that OSB still thinks the volume is in the SL24, which has now been removed from the domain.
Does anyone know what I can do to get OSB to recognise that the volume is now in the SL500? Do I need to run the 'obtar' command with the -G option to re-catalogue the tape?
Ultimately I like to see some documentation on how to transfer tapes between libraries in the same domain, and also between domains, with specifc commands to run.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Not quite as straightforward as you suggest, but we have made progress.
The volume has to have a rotation policy before the 'chvol' command will run, which seems logical. So I created a policy for movement of tapes between the SL24 and SL500, and created and ran the media movement job. However, I then tried to remove the rotation policy, but could not because it was associated with the volume just moved.
    I then tried a 'chvol -R "" RMAN-FULL-MF-000007' which returned an error:
"Error: can't relocate volume RMAN-FULL-MF-000007, volume has no rotation policy"
Which was the effect I wanted really - the removal of the association of the volume with the policy. I was then able to remove the rotation policy.
Also, 'lsvol -f RMAN-FULL-MF' still shows this volume listed twice.
The upshot of all this is that OSB now appears to show the volume in the right location and our DBA was able to delete the obsolete backups via RMAN.

  • OSB Catalogue Tidy Up

    Hi,
My OSB catalogue is growing (currently 14GB), and appears to contain entries from when we first started using the product (16 months ago). We have media family retention periods of around 3 weeks, and I was expecting the older entries to be removed automatically by OSB once the media containing the backups referenced by the old entries had expired.
Firstly, is this the expected behaviour? If not, how can I prune the catalogue down to a more manageable size? I've looked at 'obcleanup' and the index daemon policy. There is an 'Index cleanup frequency' - what does 'cleanup' mean? Should it remove catalogue entries that are no longer on tape?
Alternatively, can I remove old cataloge entries manually and then run the index daemon to re-index the entries that remain?
    Any guidance would be welcome.

An update to my previous post.
I have two file types in the catalogue directories in one of our domains, '*.saved' and 'indices.cur'. In other domains I only have the 'indices.cur' file. I can still browse the catalogue in the domains where I only have the 'indices.cur' file - does this mean that the '*.saved' files can be archived off or removed?
    Thanks in advance.

  • OSB 10.3 autoloader support

Oracle RDBMS 10.2.0.4 with new install of OSB Express 10.3 on Redhat Linux.
Admin server/media server/ client all on same single-instance database server.
    Spectra T50e
I've successfully performed an RMAN backup and restore of a single archive log to the SBT device. However, when attempting to restore when the correct tape isn't already in the tape drive, the restore job goes into a "Pending resource availability" state indefinitely (seen in the home page of WebTool) and the restore job log shows "Drive or volume on which mount attempted is unusable".
I could manually load up the tape using "mtx load" from the O/S as root user, but I can't figure out how to map RMAN volumes to what I see in "mtx status".
RMAN LIST BACKUP OF ARCHIVELOG shows Media: RMAN-DEFAULT-000001
    "mtx status" shows
    Storage Change /dev/changer:2 drives, 11 slots (1 Import/Export)
    Data Transfer Element 0: Empty
    Data Transfer Element 1: Empty
    Storage Element 1: Full VolumeTag=050744L4
    Storage Element 2: Full VolumeTag=050742L4
    etc...
    So, either
    1) How to map the VolumeTags (bar codes?) seen in mtx status to the RMAN volume names seen in LIST BACKUP
    or
    2) Get OSB to drive the autoloader itself. This should be possible as the Spectra T50 is supported by OSB, and the T50e is essentially the same but with encryption capability built in.
The automount attribute is defined for both the tape drives, but there is no automount for the library itself.
Using WebTool - Manage, List Volumes on the library lib0 I can see all of the slots in the autoloader listed with format:
    barcode 050744L4, oid 101
    barcode 050742L4, oid 102
So maybe the "oid" is the key to this?
    Any help most appreciated.

Also, some indication to check configuration/hardware (library manager) as below?
    ob> catxcr -l0 oracle/5.1

  • OSB backup

    Hi Guru's
We having OSB 10.4 on Solaris 10 with SL 24 TL Auto loader ( Tapes doesn't having Bar-code ), while firing file system backup (Sol 10 is the client OS) , it is hanging . and i have logged in to TL console then it shows loading and unloading. while OSB catalog backup is getting fired on the associated media family . please guide me where the problem lies and guide me to solve
    Best Regards
    ASA

    HI Rich
i found that OSB is not able to Label the media because , it is nor able to create the associate files under /usr/local/oracle/backup/admin/state/family/<media_family>,
so as a work around we have created the flies manually and fire the backup. but i am wondering that why OSB is not able to update those files automatically, i have tried after a service re-start but no luck, any one can guide ?
    Best Regards

    Hi Rich
    Thanks for your reply.
since i am using a stand alone Tape drive, we will not able to take the inventory , isn't it ?
i hope that my media family parameters are correct only .please find the media family details below.
    media family name :- test-media-family
volume id used :- unique to this media family
    volume expiration :- 3 years
    appendable :- yes
rotation policy & volume duplication policy are ;- none
    ====================================
While i am mounting the Tape to the drive is gives the following error
    ob> mountdev -w test-tape
Error: can't mount volume in test-tape - timed out waiting for bot

  • OSB functionality with ASM managed flash_recovery_area

Is there a way to backup ASM file system using OSB Datasets?
Its like this our RMAN backups are located in the path: ++FRA/BACKUPSETS/PROD+
Then I would like to backup this path using OSB file system backup? I am getting an error:
"the following problems were detected in dataset /Level_0_FS_Bkp:14: include path +FRA/BACKUPSETS/PROD invalid include pathname"

Have you created any database backup storage selectors? It sets up a policy for defining what media and drives to use for the backup. You can create one database backup storage selector for all databases or have multiple per database. You can create a policy for what media full backups go to and another for incremental backups etc. OSB will then automatically match the policy to the backup.
Regarding the duplication scenario, I would do the following:
    1) Create a media family just for the duplicate tapes ie Offsite
    2) Create a duplication policy which defines when tapes should be duplicated, and to what media family etc .... ie dup1
    3) Create a schedule for volume duplication scan
    4) Create a rotation policy for how you want the tape moved between sites (you need to have created a location(s) for where tapes will reside)
    5) Create a rotation scan schedule
    6) Associate the duplication policy with your original media families ie level0_family (note one duplication policy can be associated with multiple media families)
    7) Associate the rotation policy with the media family you created for your offsite tapes ie Offsite
Now, you'll have policy based management for the tapes....so it's automated. This is described in more detail in:

  • Aspectj and OSB

We are trying to instrument some of our deployed jars on OSB server with aspectj instrumentation. We have the following line in the setDomainEnv.sh to kick off instrumentation during server start up...
JAVA_OPTIONS="${JAVA_OPTIONS} -javaagent:${DOMAIN_HOME}/appConfig/com.springsource.org.aspectj.weaver-1.6.8.RELEASE.jar"but this throws huge errors during start up, however the server eventually starts up fine but aspectj doesn't get instrumented. here is the stack trace...

I've not looked at the Express version, but the full OSB installation media has a doc folder which contains all the installation and configuration guides. This is also available from the webtool by clicking the "help" link at the top right corner. The documentation is also available for download from http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10317_01/welcome.html.
Anyway, have you got OSB installed and have access to the webtool? If so you can just go to Configure Hosts, make sure your client is listed with the mediaserver role, and then go to Configure Devices and add the tape device. For the device attachment you can just specify /dev/sg0, no need to put anything else in there.

  • OSB with a (non-supported) virtual tape library

For testing and learning purposes, I have installed OSB 10.3 and the virtual tape management system mhvtl (http://mhvtl-linux-virtual-tape-library-community-forums.966029.n3.nabble.com/MHVTL-Linux-Virtual-Tape-Library-Getting-Started-td1663811.html). It seems to work quite well apart from one serious shortcoming. If a virtual tape which is already labeled and used as part of a media family is unmounted from the drive, a subsequent re-mount leads to a relabel of the volume whereupon all pieces and any reference to the volume are lost. If the virtual tape is left in the drive, there is no issue - new backups are appended to the end of the volume as one would expect.
Somewhat perversely, when I mount a used tape, OSB correctly identifies it. As soon as I start writing to it though, the volume is re-labeled.
I can overcome the issue by using obtar -z to advance the tape to the end of the volume.
    % obtar -zf VDAT72
    Volume label:
    Volume UUID: d4c93502-15a0-102e-b7f5-00163e319d06

    Backup copy number: not applicable
    Backup content: autobackup
    $ obtar -zf VDAT72
Error: no backup image at current position -- end of volume set.
At this point, any new backup starts writing to the virtual tape at the current position, and existing files on the volume are preserved - no re-label is carried out.
I'd like to debug OSB but when I try to set up debugging on the volume, I get:
    $ obtool labelvol obtaropt J  drive VDAT72
Error: Label/reuse operation requires that you specify no names or BDFs.
If anyone has some clues, I would be grateful.

    $ obtar -zf VDAT72
Error: no backup image at current position -- end of volume set.
At this point, any new backup starts writing to the virtual tape at the current position, and existing files on the volume are preserved - no re-label is carried out.
I'd like to debug OSB but when I try to set up debugging on the volume, I get:
    $ obtool labelvol obtaropt J  drive VDAT72
Error: Label/reuse operation requires that you specify no names or BDFs.
If anyone has some clues, I would be grateful.
