OSX 10.4.8 plot against firewire? Bad experiences

Is it me or there is a problem with FW external drives and MACOSX 10.4.8?
I have been using external firewire drives for some time, my oldest FW HD dates back to 2002 or 2001 and the newest is a two-week old HD. Never had a problem using several desktops and laptops until this last summer. It may be a mere coincidence but my problems started right after I upgraded to 10.4.8.
(1) In August, my oldest FW HD (Maxtor 160Gb) failed to mount on a PowerPC G4 minitower, one day later the PPC HD also failed. I recovered the data (thanks to DiskWarrior) from the PPC and dumped it all in a new external FW/USB HD (FW 400/800) connected to a powerbook. I installed a new HD in the PPC. Still could not access the external FW.
(2) Story 2. Early September, the external FW (LaCie 150Gb Seagate) connected to my home 15" powerbook G4 failed to mount.
(3) Story 3. Two weeks ago I bought a portable FW/USB LaCie for my 12" powerbook G4. A week later the HD failed to mount. I didn't try to fix it, I exchanged it for a new one.
(4) I removed from its case the external maxtor FW I mention in (1) and put it into an old PowerPC and started the computer as a firewire, so far so good. I connected that computer to the firwire port of my 12" powerbook mentioned in (3). It was a scary at the connection moment, the firewire port of the two computers were fried. The laptop went blank and turned itself off. Boy, it did smell, but the powerbook after awhile restarted. I ended up with a laptop and a minitower with unusable firewire ports. I put back the regular HD for the minitower and it runs fine but does not have firewire ports. My powerbook has only the USB2.0 ports available.
(5) My teenager nephew came home and told me that the ports in the external drives were fried (smell stays after a few weeks, he says) and gave a solution (nephew is a computer engineering major). I went to the electronics store and bought a firewire/USB case ($60USD). I plugged in the external Maxtor HD and it mounted fine on the USB ports of the three computers I described above, all data was there, nothing lost. I transferred the data to the internal disk of the PPC. Then I moved on to the LaCie mentioned on (2), same thing, removed it from the original case, put in the new case and the drive was there, mounts fine, all the data is there, I copied to the PPC and kept this one as a backup.
Anyways, problems with 3 firewire HDs and two fried FW computer ports makes me think that either is my bad luck or there is a problem with firewire and macosx 10.4.8 or older hardware systems.
By the way, I called several data recovery companies and they wanted between $600 and $3000 USD to recover the data. Since the HDs were backups I took the risk of doing all this by myself.
Any experiences out there? Solutions?
EA

What version you use, is that the last version 1.7.4:

Also try to use their power adapter (even it said it is fire wire bus powered), for it might be not enough power to fire the box out from the cold.
Good Luck

  • Best Buy Smash Preorder Bad Experience

I sent the following email to Best Buy regarding my bad experience when I went to pickup my Super Smash preorder. After hours of being on hold and being transferred to countless different people, the final explanation I was given is that Best Buy can at any time cancel a pre-order, so I had no recourse. Here is the original email I sent:
"I was writing to make bestbuy aware of a very unfortunate situation that I encountered tonight at my local best buy (Las Vegas, NV, Summerlin location). I preordered the $99.99 bundle of Smash Brothers Wii U in store, putting $5 down to reserve a copy. I have my best friend in town tonight to play Smash this weekend, so I was really excited to get off work and go grab my copy. Unfortunately, once I got to best buy, they told me that they sold my copy to someone else accidentally and that they didn't know if they would ever get another shipment. They offered me no recourse except to wait and see if another shipment came in. After driving around for a couple hours I finally found a place that still had a bundle and purchased it. It was a horrible experience and makes me regret becoming part of Best Buys gamer club. I would have gotten 20% off at Best Buy with my Gamers Club Unlocked Membership, but I had to get it at Fry's instead and paid full price. I tried to find it at another Best Buy but all of the ones in Vegas were sold out.
I would appreciate if Best Buy would, at a minimum, refund 1.) the $5 preorder I put down on the game and; 2.) the $20 discount that I missed out on with my Gamers Club membership because I had to go purchase it at Fry's. I have usually had good experiences with best buy, but this one has really soured me on buying my games at Best Buy and would hope that you guys would make sure something like this doesn't happen in the future. Preordering games is to ensure that you get a copy when it comes out, it is not a source for free money for Best Buy. I can provide any documentation you need and I look forward to hearing from you."
After talking to many different associates for countless hours I am done trying to get anything for this nonsense. The last person I talked to told me to put down the full money instead of $5 next time and this might not happen. Best Buy has lost a loyal customer because of their policy.

    Hi Vote4link,
As a Super Smash Bros fan myself, it’s truly disheartening to read of your pre-order experience. Having a friend in town to play over the weekend, only to find out that your copy isn’t available at our store, is understandably frustrating and I’m very sorry if that is what happened here. While it sounds like you found another option to acquire the game, I regret hearing that it wasn’t at Best Buy!
Like zztoluca said, if you pre-ordered and your copy arrived at the store, it should have been held for you. If this didn’t occur, it was a store error and this is the last thing we want for our gamers, especially those who are members of Gamers Club Unlocked. With that, your $5 deposit will automatically be refunded to you if you don’t fulfill your pre-order within eight days if it was created on BestBuy.com, five days if created in-store.
I’d like to ensure your feedback is seen by leadership at the store, so if willing, please send me a private message and include either your BestBuy.com order number, or the Customer Service PIN located on the bottom of your in-store pre-order receipt. You can send me a private message by clicking the link in my signature.
Thanks for sharing your concerns with us and despite the circumstances, I hope you’ve been enjoying Super Smash Bros.

  • Bad experience with Verizon Fios Internet and Customer Service

I had an extremely bad experience with Verizon Fios Internet service and I will never use Verizon again.
In August 2014, I called and installed the Verizon Fios Internet and phone bundle. I asked the customer agent several times if I will be charged anything before the installation of the Internet and phone service. She said, 'No, we will only start charging after the Internet and phone are installed at your apartment'. I went to the store and picked up the router and phone and installed it at home by myself. The router did not work. I called Tech support and they said it will take several days for another available agent to come and look into the issue. I decided to discontinue the service and closed the account that same night.
At the end of the month, I received a bill of $80 of activation fee for the internet service. Nothing was ever activated, my internet router did not work, and I got charged an activation fee for a service that I did not even start using. From August to December, I called customer service over 10 times and some of them said they will waive it while the others said it's a non-refundable activation fee. One lady said, 'Ma'am, the activation fee starts when you placed the order, the warehouse received it and packed the router in the boxes....' Isn't that ridiculous? If that's the case, please ask all your customer representative to say a clause before new customers open their account: Are you aware that you will be charged a non-refundable activation fee once you open the account regardless of whether or not you use the service or not.
So after 3 months (November 2014), I decided to get out of all these troubles and paid off my $80 activation fee. They put the bill in the collection agency and I called them and paid the overdue balance. Then in December 2014, I received a statement saying I have a $3.11 overdue balance. The collection agency told me that they will charge me for the whole activation fee and a $3 transaction fee for the transaction. So now Verizon came back and said I owed them the $3 because I paid the collection agency their transaction fee.
I am very disappointed and furious about the whole Verizon operating system. Charging a customer for an activation fee for a service s/he has not consumed or used does not make any business sense. In addition, they do not know how to coordinate with the collection agency on overdue bills. Give the customer a heads-up that they will be charged a transaction fee on top of the overdue balance, and that transaction fee does not count towards clearing the balance.
I have completely lost my confidence in Verizon albeit the many good feedback from my friends.

    Hi crystallau52,
Sorry you are having difficulty. An agent with access to your account will reach out to you directly by email, private message in the Forums and/or the billing telephone number on your Verizon account for more information or to help you resolve your issue.

  • Thinkpad W520/T61p Bad experience

I am sharing this story in retrospect of the events.  I posted this on a popular tech blog on a thread discussing bad experience with different computer companies and I decided why not post it here as well.  I am still grieving over my dead T61p as it still is prominently placed on my desk even after it has been dead for a few months.  I loved it more than my current computer, don’t get me wrong I like my W520 and it destroys it spec wise but for some reason I like the T61p the best.
So, a few months ago my Thinkpad T61p's graphics card died thus making my computer useless.  The funny thing is that 4 months prior my card had been found to be a defect from the nVidia defective cards and was replaced for no cost, and they even cleaned and repaired minor wear and tear things. I was ecstatic when I got it back and it was running better than ever and looked as good as it did brand new.  But then 4 months later, while coming to an end of an architectural college project my graphics card died. Same as before (BIOS beeps indicating that there was a graphics card issue).
I called and got a response that my computer was out of warranty and it sucks to suck.  Finally after the 4th or 5th time I finally got someone that was kind enough to try and help.  She was very helpful and found out that there is a 3 month warranty on replaced parts and she was sorry that she could not help me out since I was ONE month over it.
Saddened and distraught, I started looking for new computers since the replacement cost a lot an might as well get a new machine since there was the risk that the new graphics card might die as well.  So, when looking into computers, I have always liked the sturdy build of Thinkpads and minus the graphics card issue (which I marked as an nVidia issue) my computer had been fantastic, much better than my peer’s computers.  So I decided to give Lenovo another shot and get a W520.  I was excited to renew my trust in Lenovo.
This was quickly brought to an end as I eagerly awaited my machine.  I needed it as I had a college project to complete and I hated borrowing computers and having to have my files float on different USBs. I was watching the shipping and all of a sudden it goes from Kentucky to North Carolina.  This confused me as I am in Nebraska.  Then the next day, it is UPS has it marked as out for delivery.  I thought that there was an error in location and waited for it to be delivered. There was no error in location and it was delivered and signed by Jon Doe in North Carolina.  I was baffled. I called Lenovo and the guy was not helpful at all.  I then called again right after hanging up because I needed an answer as to what was going on.  The person told me that it was Lenovo's warehouse and they were holding it.  I got no answer as to why.  But the person told me that it was going to ship out to me the next day.  Three days later and still in NC, and I call again.  I get the same answer that it will be shipping soon.  A few more days later, I finally get someone nice and she gave me the new tracking number over the phone.  It finally moved from NC to Nebraska, slowly.  It must have been on the Pony Express.  I called to see if it could be sped up but to no avail.
So, over a week after it should have arrived I finally obtained my computer.  It was aggravating since every day without it was one I couldn't work fully on my project.  I tried contacting higher up customer service but got nothing and gave up just glad to have my computer.  I have referred many people to purchace Thinkpads.  My entire large family owns a Lenovo variant because of me. And I'm still a little bitter about the whole issue.  Being the computer savvy person people come to me for advice and now I'm beginning to refer people to other brands as options for them to buy.

I don't really understand the complaint in this thread.  Is the main complaint shipment tracking?  If so, see UPS.  Yes, their system isn't the best.  One of the reasons is that it literally makes up progress based on what should happen, not what is actually happening.  Sounds like some of that was at work here.
Because of the title, I thought you were going to compare the T61p to the W520 but that doesn't seem to be the case.  If it's just a shipping thread, meh.  Get over it.  Trying to track a package will drive you mad.  Just be glad it didn't come USPS.
If your real beef is that you lost money due to the delay, sorry man but the best way to lay your hands on a machine in an emergency situation like that is to buy at retail in your geo.  Or rent something until your ship comes in.  Rolling the dice on a CTO is a crap shoot.

  • Can we migrate SharePoint Designer 2013 workflows from DEV to UAT to Live without any issues? Any bad experiences?

    Hi there,
    1. Can we migrate SharePoint Designer 2013 workflows from DEV to UAT to Live without any issues? Any bad experiences?
    2. When we deploy these workflows - does IIS need a restart?
    Thank you.

That depends, did you create reusable workflows? Those can be deployed to another environment (of course depending on dependencies within the workflow itself)
    Kind regards,

  • How do I turn off Firefox checking for updates (I am fed up with Firefox continually asking to update when I don't want to due to previous bad experiences)

I would like to turn off firefox checking for updates
I don't want to update due to previous bad experiences with updates (version 4 and version 5)
I am frustrated by being reminded on a daily basis to update when I don't want to

    Use
*'''Firefox button -> Options -> |Advanced | -> |Update|''' and uncheck the update option, or opt to ask first.
    * see [[Options window - Advanced panel#w_update-tab]]_update-tab
    * and to downgrade
**[[installing a previous version of Firefox]]
** and the download itself [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
    Also note that currently
    * firefox 3.6 is still supported, and has had recent security updates
    * plans are to continue supporting it despite any comment on the download page
**(not sure how long for but see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Planning/2011-09-07#Questions.2C_Comments.2C_FYI ) confirming continuing support for Firefox 3.6
    * Firefox 3.6 has updated with security fixes, so is I think now 3.6.22 ; but it is NOT currently trying to upgrade its users to the current firefox release (Firefox 6)

  • Grey screen issue with 10.5 & 10.5.1 - bad experience with Leopard

Here's a quick overview of my bad experience with installing Leopard:
*1st attempt:* Upgraded Tiger 10.4.10, was greeted with the blue screen. This was an APE issue.
*2nd attempt:* Archive and installed above install. This is where the continuing issue first occurred. The issue being on the first or second reboot after a 'successful' installation, I get the grey screen and spinning gear loop. In verbose mode I see this recurring loop:
    Mez com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.nDNSResponder |xxx|) : posix_spawnp("usr/sbin/mDNSResponder", ...): No such file or directory
xxx = incremental value, it adds 1 each time the error cycles, which happens roughly ever 10 seconds).
Additionally, Disk Utility reports this error: Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
*3rd attempt:* Erase and install. Same issue as 2nd attempt occured.
*4th, 5th, 6th attempts:* Bought a brand new hard drive to replace the old one. This was an idea that was raised on another one of my threads. People thought I could have bad sectors. Tried upgrading and archive install from 10.4, no. Erase and install, no. Same issue as before.
*7th attempt:* Tried swapping out the RAM from a friends MBP (who has successfully upgraded to Leopard). No, same failure as before.
*8th attempt:* Tried using his Leopard disk. NO!
*9th attempt:* My last attempt so far... Erase and install, then applied the 10.5.1 update. It all went well, but it always has, until the point where I reboot. It successfully rebooted once, but to be sure all was fine (before using the migration assistant) I rebooted again... Oh what a surprise, it doesn't work anymore. Same enraging loop.
*Any new ideas people, I have faith that there is some genius out there who can provide me with a solution. I will love you forever if you can help me.*
*Quick question:* Do other people see the dialogue box that appears before the computer restarts...
"Updating Boot Caches - The Boot caches are being updated, the system will shutdown when this task is complete" (It's sort of along those lines. I don't have enough time to write down exactly what it says)??
Oh well, back to my newest backup (10.4.11).
    *Fingers crossed for 10.5.2 :D*

    THANK YOU!!! At least preliminarily...
I've spent the last three hours researching and troubleshooting my greyscreen dilemma, and your post is the only one that seemed to work so far.
I installed Leopard 10.5 onto my G4 Dual 1.25 Mirror, successfully restarted after the install, then had glitchy problems including being unable to run Software Update or even run the Leopard Update after downloading it from the apple website. So I restarted the computer (after removing the Install DVD and shutting the drive door) and found myself stuck at the grey screen with the spinning ball.
Nothing worked. I couldn't do anything to get it to boot.
After researching, I booted into single user mode and ran mount -o rw,remount / # (from this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5796214&#5796214) and when I exited and it began to boot I saw it get stuck at mDNSResponder line prompt, repeating the line prompt every 5 seconds or so and never getting anywhere.
Then I found your post and changed permissions as you mentioned, exited and it booted up successfully. I then immediately ran Software Update and installed the Leopard 10.5.1 update and now all is well again.
Insane for this to be required. I barely know what single user means and would have sent this computer in to Apple if I hadn't found your solution.
Hopefully the next person who searches on this problem will find this and save themselves a horror story too. Thanks again.
    Jeff

  • Have a very bad experience at MCC SIAM DISCOVERY in Bangkok , Thailand

About six months ago my iPad have some problem about Wi-Fi, a very bad signal and hard to connect. I already buy an AppleCare Protection Plan for iPad online, so it was still have warranty. I went to MCC SIAM DISCOVERY (http://www.maccenter.co.th/mcc/Home.html) have a very long queue with a very boring face of customer service guy. When it was my turn they check my iPad about 5 sec and said that my iPad are out of warranty because it has too much scratch. They also said that if I want to buy AppleCare Protection Plan, I must buy it there. So my problem was unfix, it's ok because my iPad work with Wi-Fi sometime. Until yesterday 2 NOV 2013, my iPad have another problem it was hold in headphone mode all the time. I went to that place again (MCC SIAM DISCOVERY) so I found this “Due to computer's queue overload, our computer service will resume again on Nov 18th, 2013. Please visit others nearby other service providers. “(http://upic.me/show/47961640, http://upic.me/show/47961641). It was a very bad experience about this apple service center, please check your authorized service provider quality, especially this MCC SIAM DISCOVERY (http://www.maccenter.co.th/mcc/Home.html). Apple have a very successful sale in Thailand but you don't have enough after service? Today my iPad is fully broken its show only apple logo when it's open and will show logo until battery out. Thanks for a very bad experience (twice) MCC SIAM DISCOVERY.
Ps. this is my iPad Serial Number: DL*******KNW
I use apple product almost everything I use iPhone, have an iPad, Mac book Pro. From now on I must think carefully about using apple product in Thailand.

Regarding your battery, you can probably reset the SMC and see if that improves your battery life. Here are the steps.

  • For SD camcorder are miniDV tape and Firewire bad choices?

I just purchased a camcorder (Panasonic SDR_H40) which appears incompatible with iMovie HD 6, so I am going to return it. I currently have iMovie HD 6.0.3 and will probably stay with that version (based on some discussions on this site). I was going to buy a miniDV tape camcorder but they seem hard to find and the salesman said that this format was becoming obsolete. Also other discussions on this site suggest that Apple may be phasing out Firewire. Assuming that I can find a SD miniDV camcorder, presumably with a Firewire output, is this a bad choice for a camcorder? I'd appreciate any help.
    Tricia

for 'Standard' (=not HiDef) video, miniDv is still an excellent choice:
° less compression => excellent pic quality
° no limitation in 'disk space' => insert new tape = another 13GB/60min recording time..
° easy/convenient long term storage of 'raw data' => keep the tapes
° 100% compatible with iMovie 6 and other versions..
prob here: actual consumer MacBooks lack a fw-port => miniDV import is via fw only.
your options: use your 'old' Mac; use a MacMini; use a MacPro ...
nobody can tell you about 'phasing' of fw on Macs .. +'we don't comment on future products'+ ..

  • Problem with mac osx 10.6.4 and audio firewire device

ok i use an edirol fa-66 , the problem is a random one , sometimes when i play music with itunes , logic or even the preview mp3 feature , the sound go downsampled and then stops, the only way to return is turn off and turn on the audio interface. I had this problem time ago only with logic 9.0.2 but with the version 9.1.1 everithing got right. Now with osx 10.6.4 the problem come back on all the audio programs (not only logic),so i have returned to 10.6.3, everithing works fine.
    conclusion
in 10.6.4 there is something wrong with the core audio that is incompatible with edirol fa device.
maybe with osx 10.6.5 apple can resolve this?
i'm thinking to buy a motu device (they have their driver and don't use core audio)

  • 'Resource Busy' problem when installing OSX 10.5.4 from external firewire

    Hi,
I'm giving my old powerbook to a friend and would like to wipe it and reinstall 10.5 on the system. The catch is that the internal DVD player is fried.
I have an external firewire dvd player than I use to install.
The installer boots up properly, but when I go into disk utility to erase or repartion the drive, I receive a "resource busy" error.
The hard drive shows up in the left window, but the hard drive volume does not. I do not have the ability to mount or unmount the volume for that drive.
How can I gain access to the drive to repartition (or erase) the volume, so I can do a clean install?
    Please advise,
    and thanks.
    -S

Never had that issue. If you can boot from the ext DVD player, then you should be able to mount/unmount the int HD's volume. You might try on another computer or use another computer, hooking up the PB in target disk mode.

  • Bad firewire recording experience

Using the mackie onyx firewire option with a 1640 and a Mac-Book Pro, 2ghz core duo, 1GB ram. The 400 firewire feed from the mackie going into the 400 port and the hard drive I'm trying to record to is a 7200 external hitachi running onto the 800 port.
I can't reliably record with this setup. Even 8 track recording is dropping after 10-20 seconds with the "disk too slow" message. Weird. It's a fast drive. That's why I bought it.
Am I experiencing any port bottlenecks that I'm not aware of? I tried this set-up for the 1st time last night. Ugh. Crash 'n burn.
I would think the set-up would be just fine and capable to handle anything, but practical operation is a disaster right now.
My suspicion is on the Mackie gear as on a couple of Logic launch attempts the mackie card is recognized, but NOT sending record signals. A reboot might clear it up, but it's hit or miss, no consistent reliability.
My other guess is that the dual use of the firewire ports is making the gear finicky. Is that a possibility or a wrong assumption? When recording my cpu and disk usage monitor barely registers any peaks, but then it'll just spike all of a sudden and the recording grinds to a halt.
Also, when attempting to monitor playback, the return send with the firewire option back into the board from core audio is not functional anymore.
Which is why I'm here looking to sleuth this out before a call to mackie support; narrow any false leads when tech support starts asking me inquiries. Any ideas?
BTW, what's the most useful low-impact-on-the-computer settings for recording? I've typically let stuff ride in the mid range for buffers and such, but I'll take suggestions.
    Cheers

    Wonderful.
Well, little bits of knowledge that I discover along the way. Thanks for clueing me in.
I like to wish that I make these interesting discoveries before I open my pocketbook, but sadly that never seems to be the case.
Also, Mackie apparently has some touchy firewire issues with their stuff, so any hiccup that upsets the cart really dumps the apples. (pun intended?) After messing around with the system today I think I still have a functional board and firewire card, but, lordy, any routing involving the 800FW disk makes the whole system roll over and die.
    It really just stops working.
Remove the 800 drive and it seems to go smooth at least for mixing. I haven't done a heavy-lifting stress test on it yet by trying to do a strong signal 16ch simultaneous recording, but that's on schedule for tomorrow.
In the meantime, I need a reliable drive recording solution that will work on my MacBookPro that doesn't futz with the firewire port at all, I guess I'd like to dedicate the FW to the Mackie board and nuthin' else.
SATA Express/34? Any testimonials out there that this works solid with 16 track recording? I've done semi-successful 16ch recording with the mackie routed through a 7200 rpm fw400 disk, but it did give the "disk to slow" stoppage 1 time during a 4 hour recording.
Of course, when it quit it stopped at a rather important place.
I just need/want something reliable and solid. I had pretty good luck with my old G4 and the hard drive set-up I had on that system; kinda surprised that the live recording thing ain't working out so well with the MacBook Pro, but I guess my bandwidth ain't as wide as it needs to be.
    Living and learning...?

  • OSX Mavericks core audio Apogee Duet firewire

    Hi guys,
I've read a lot of posts with core audio problems, with int/ext sound card, USB, firewire etc etc.
So I've been testing my Apogee Duet firewire with the latest updated driver and 10.9.4 Mavericks.
With Console open I just waited for the dropouts/stutter/clicking famous problems.
It happened whit a Youtube video and a song on SoundCloud.
This is a screenshot of what happened during the dropouts and clicks. As you can see many times per second. Like the noise you hear.
I hope that someone read this discussion. I don't know how to send this to Apple. Maybe they can solve finally this system bug.

Unfortunately the same problems here with Edirol FA-101 and 10.9.4 :-(
There were some promises from Apple that it will be fixed from v. 10.9.3, but still nothing...
