OSX 10.8.2 restarting
My MBP is restarting several times a day. Never had this problem before Moutain Lion. Anyone else seeing this?
Uninstall or disable LogMeIn. Might also see if there's an update.
For this possible culprit kernel extension, it is not necessary to completely uninstall the parent program.
(Note: disabling a kext this way may not always work as it may refuse to cooperate, but this is usually effective. The worst that will happen is you'll get a message saying it won't work.)
You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste
sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

Anyone out there have a mac osx 10.3 install & restart discs?
Anyone out there have a mac osx 10.3 install & restart discs?
Some Powerbook G4s actually would only work with the Gray discs that came with them.
Without knowing the age of the Powerbook G4
http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
It is impossible to know if system specific 10.3 installer is needed, or if a retail 10.4 is needed.
Know these dates:
Macs that were released between 10/24/2003 and 12/17/2003 (xx343...xx350 serial numbers, where x can be any letter or number) could only install 10.3.2, or 10.3.5 retail as is labelled on the disc, and the prebundled installer disc that came with them. All retail discs for 10.3 looked like: and did not say upgrade, dropin, or OEM.
Macs that were released between 12/17/2003 and 8/12/2004 with serial numbers xx351...xx432 could only install 10.3.5 retail as is labelled on the disc and the prebundled 10.3 installer disc that came with them.
Macs released with serial numbers xx433 to xx516 could only use the 10.3 installer disc that shipped with them to install 10.3, and for retail release could use 10.4, or 10.5 depending on their configuration stated in this user tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541
This is all covered in my tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2831
Please do NOT post your serial number on the forum, as it is public. -
OSX Mavericks crash and restart on mid-2010 13" model
Hi all,
I've recently upgraded from OSX Lion to Mavericks (original MBP OS was Snow Leopard). In the last few days, the system has regularly frozen and then automatically restarted. I have checked the log, and it seems to originate from a kernel panic (?). I've pasted the most recent error report below.
I've read a number of discussions that say this is a know problem with mid-2010 15" MBP, which apple may still repair: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5512212?tstart=0 . My MBP is a mid-2010 13" model, and I'm not sure if this problem is applicable to my machine as well.
If anybody has any advice on how to reset this, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall those, one at a time. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember. See

The application install OSX mountain lion cancelled restart
Hi,
I am hoping someone may be able to throw light on this problem. I have a 10.6.8 installed on my iMac and downloaded the latest mountain lion from the app store.
When it attempts to auto restart, it tells me it can't, because the very application I'm trying to upload is preventing the restart, even though I clicked the 'close applications' button.
I have googled this and not come up against an answer to this issue.
I am not very computer literate and have no idea what I should do?
Is there anyone out there who has experience of this and knows what to do when this happens.. and even why this happens?
Thank you in advance.Read

Installing OSX 10.5, not restarting from DVD?
I'm installing from 10.4.9, the drive refuses to restart from the install disc and ejects it on restart and comes on in 10.4.9 again. I have tried restarting from system preferences start up option and also restart holding down the C key, all to the same result. I am aware of a keybord combination which allows this however don't recall it at present. Please any info. will be appreciated. thanks, Dugo

To follow up... this is the second time I have used this same install disc. The disc was on purchased at an Apple store. The same issue came up the first time... I had to call tech support for help, the tech help had me start up from the disc using a keyboard combination which presented start up options on boot up, however I don't recall the sequence now. Suggestions on this?
First, if this happened previously, you have either a defective DVD or a marginal optical drive.
To get the boot option screen, hold down the Option key during boot. -
OSX freezes even after restarting
Hi,
For some reasons my macbook air running on the latest snow leopard froze while i was browsing the internet using Chrome (froze because i was switching the input language using alt space). The wheel was still spinning after i have force quitted Chrome, and when i tried to force quit Finder through the dock icon, it said it was not responding.
So i did a hard restart and just to realise that the OS still freezes seconds after the reboot, i have done many reboots and the same happens. I have no idea what to do now please help!

Updated to OSX Mavericks, getting random restarts
Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, my late 2009 Macbook Pro restarts at least once every session, at random times, no matter what I am doing. Everything was working perfectly on 10.8, so I assume it is an issue my computer has with the new OS.
If anyone can help with this issue it would be appreciated, as I cannot trust my laptopto do work on when it restarts at any time.
The crash log is here:

My iMac has OSX Utilities windows on restart! I'm Panicing!!!
My iMac had came up with an OS X Utilities window came up. I'm panicing! Did I loose all my files!? It says, restore from backup, reinstall OS X, get help online, and Disk Utility. Please help I'm freaking out!
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your iMac starts up in Recovery when it can't start up in Mac OS X, probably because of a hard drive issue.
Open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and verify it. Do you see any error? Do the same with the hard drive. If you get an error, repair them. Then, go to > Startup Disk, and see if your OS X partition appears. If so, choose it and restart -
Scrolling on Magic mouse no longer work after OSX update
I have just performed an OSX update and after restarting I immediately noticed that the scrolling function and other gestures no longer work on the magic mouse. I have also noticed that no gestures work on the Mac Book Pro track pad. The only function that works on the mouse is moving the mouse pointer and the buttons. Same goes for the track pad. Some great update that was. Has anyone else discovered this and how do I repair this loss of function? When I first initiated the update, I saw that there was a download required which mention some improvements for the mouse/keyboard but mainly updates required to support the new magic track pad. Is it possible to revert this individual update and if so how? Thanks.
You were almost correct, but not quite. You can see updates in /Library/Updates. I'm not sure what receipts is, but it didn't contain the track pad/mouse update package I was expecting to see. However, I did eventually find it in Updates after a trip to my local Apple store. What happened was that the original update process completed about 95% but for some reason crashed. When I restarted, it appeared that there was nothing wrong, until that is I tried to use the mouse and track pad. I presume that the update process uninstalled the previous package but didn't actually install the new update. I downloaded the the latest update from Apple, but it appeared to be older than what I downloaded from the Update process, so it wouldn't install. I would suggest that here lies a bug. The package install process did detect the new trackpad / mouse package but it didn't detect that it wasn't installed and should have prompted me to install it.

How can I clean Install a Macbook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion?
Restart with the Option key held down, tab to the recovery partition, press Enter, and use the Disk Utility to either erase or repartition the internal drive. Install the OS onto the blank partition or an external drive.

Printer no longer seen in Classic after update
I just loaded the latest 10.4.7 combo update. I can print to my Lexmark Z32 printer in OSX apps but not using the one CLASSIC program I use (and depend on), Quark 4.1. The OS9 chooser no longer sees the printer and the printer utility cannot locate the printer. This was never a problem before the update. I have re-loaded the latest Lexmark OS9 driver (several times, both with the printer attached and with USB unplugged) with no luck and have repeatedly deleted printer preferences. Have also loaded the latest Lexmark OSX driver with no change. My MacMini (pre-Intel chip) communicates with the printer via Appletalk. Can someone help???? Many thanks.
Ron SThanks for the suggestion but no luck. LW8 sends the file to the printer as Temporary Cusom PS file. Printer utility says job is printing then reverts to jobs stopped. Does not print. (This is probably a side effect of another new problem I've had since the update: after I have quit out of Classic I cannot print again in OSX until I have restarted.) Also I do need the print quality options available with the Lexmark driver.

I have an Early 2008 MacBook Pro with 10.9.3 installed, that I have been trying to install Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I have worked with several technicians from Apple but have not been able to resolve the issue. I have worked on this on and off for several months and of course am somewhat frustrated. I will give a detailed account hoping someone may have an idea.
I did previously have Windows 7 installed on this laptop but decided to reinstall after upgrading to 250GB SSD and installing memory up to 4GB. I have confirmed with mfg of the SSD that the drive is compatible with both windows and mac and that there should be no problem with the configuration I am attempting.
I run the bootcamp assistant and select both "Download Windows Support Files" and "Install Windows" options. The assistant downloads the files to a USB drive. I set the partition to split equally. I get a warning that the USB is bootable and the assistant needs to disable that to continue. I click ok and then continue with the install. The laptop reboots to the Windows installation media, which is original purchased media, not a burned copy. The installation says that it cannot be installed on the BOOTCAMP partition because it needs to be installed on an NTFS partition, so I choose advanced, and format the partion. The installation then continues. The installation finishes and says that it needs to reboot.
This is when I have an issue. The laptop reboots to a blank grey screen and thats it. No further progress. I have manually rebooted it several times and always get blank grey screen. If I use option key to load boot manager I get the following options. Machintosh OS, Windows OS, 10.9.2 Recovery, Windows (DVD), or EFI Boot. Any selection other than Machintosh OS simply hangs. The cursor is no longer movable and the boot manager is still displayed. If I select Mac OS, it will boot back into OSX.
In OSX, I am able to examine the bootcamp volume (now named Untitled after having to format). The disk does contain Windows files ($WINDOWS.~BT, $WINDOWS.~LS, Perflogs, Program Files, Program Files (x86), Users, and Windows) so it would appear that the installation did proceed and copied files to the drive.
I have attempted the install with both Windows 7 Pro 32bit and 64bit and both have the same problem. I have even gone so far as to reinstall OSX back to 10.7 and run bootcamp from there, still have the same issue. I have even tried reinstalling on my old original hard drive to see if SSD was the issue, run into the same problem on original drive as well.
It seems no matter what I have tried, after the windows install I can not get past blank grey screen when trying to boot to windows.
I am open to any and all suggestions. Has anyone out there seen issues like this before? Any ideas on how to correct? I would love to have my bootcamp set back up. Thanks!Amilixkan, thank you for your suggestion although it sounds complicated and I can't believe that everyone would have to go through that process in order to get Windows running on a brand new Mac that has the latest version of Bootcamp and the support software. As with mjm50322's situation, I never even got to the Windows installer phase of the process so of course can't even boot Windows to try your suggestion.
However, in my specific situation, I'm wondering if, after creating the partition and restarting, my computer can't see my external optical drive even though it does show up in Finder when booted to OSX. After the restart, when I got the black screen with the blinking cursor, there was absolutely no activity on my external drive. I could feel the disc inside was spinning but there was no activity on the read LED on the drive and of course nothing happened on screen. So, your suggestion of using two USB drives, one with the Windows ISO file and the other for the Bootcamp software support files may be a good solution that I will try. That way I'm not relying on the optical drive. While on the phone with a senior Apple Support tech yesterday I already reverted my drive back to a single partition for the time being so I will look into repeating the process trying an ISO file instead of my Windows installation disc. I will report back. Thank you, -
The saga goes like this... (grab a hot, foamy latte, sit back and read -- go ahead -- take a couple of minutes to live my rollercoaster of emotions)...
I've got a dead PC laptop graveyard brewing in my living room corner. The latest addition is a cool little Toshiba R100. Two pounds light, it's been a great little workhorse: 256mb of RAM, 20gb HD, running XP Pro. But the screen has started to dima little after 2 1/2 years... my little baby is tired. I decided to go ahead and put the DNR sign on her, and relegate her to the graveyard.
SO then came my dilemma. I'm primarily Mac in my own little world, but as a consultant I am often forced to work within the PC world. And then came along the MacBook Pro with the Intel chip... eyebrows raised, and then Apple releases Boot Camp.
I barely dodged the Army recruiters in high school cause I was afraid of Boot Camp -- but now, at 41, I regret being afraid of what Boot Camp really offered: discipline, diligence, motivation, and a strong desire to achieve.
Now, Apple was allowing me to re-join Boot Camp at my advanced age.
I sauntered into the Apple Store this weekend, convinced I was ready to sign on the dotted line... the Mastercard dotted line that is.
I had done my research... the shiny new Toshiba Tablet Laptop with all the whizbangs was $1999.00 at Best Buy. A MacBook Pro outfitted to run both OSX and XP would cost close to $4000.00 out the store:
MacBook Pro with 2gb RAM, 100gb HD, 2.16 Intel Duo Core $3000.00 + the freshly minted copy of XPSP2 I'd need would set me back $300.00. Then you add the AppleCare and extra power adapter, tax, and you're close to 4grand.
I weighed the difference: 2 separate laptops to keep track of, or the promise of an ALL IN ONE! Simply dual-boot, and all your problems are solved. One computer, will travel!
My wife had to be put out of the picture, so I scurried her off to the Giants game. No way she would be a part of this, and she opposed it from the start. It's countless the bedroom arguments that Steve Jobs has caused... does he even imagine?
So in the store, the Apple Dude is well-informed. He did tell me, however, that if I wanted to see Boot Camp in operation, I'd have to go to Circuit City -- since the Apple Stores expressly forbid BETA software on their demo machines, and, of course, Apple will not even consider having a machine with XP running in the store. He also stated that since it was Beta software, they wouldn't support it -- basically, the machines CAN DO IT, but I'm on my own...
He promised to quickly upgrade the in the store machine to 2gb of RAM if I purchase there, however, he said I could order it online custom if I wanted.
He also said to forget about the built-in iSight, bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and possibly some other little gadgets running under Windows.
So I bought it... holding my breath at the cashier stand... hoping the credit card would authorize... he also convinced me to get the free iPod Nano and Printer, since I convinced HIM to give me the educational discount... I was currently in an online wine-tasting class.. he bought it, and quickly took about $700 off the total!
So I get the little silver sucker home, and fire her up. I made the mistake of transferring my G4 stuff over first. That was 50gb and 3 hours later before I could get to Boot Camp.
When I got to Boot Camp, it all started out real nifty. I was sure to PRINT OUT the Install PDF (I highly encourage this), and away I went. The download was painless, and I didn't need a firmware upgrade. The first message came to me quickly however... Boot Camp told me it couldn't partition the drive. I had chosen 30GB for Windows. BC said the disc needed repair. So I had to boot from the OSX install CD, and run Disk Utility. Disk Utility repaired something, and BC then did the partition! Woo-hoo. I wiped the sweat from mt forebrow - I had a successful partition.
Next came the install of Windows. I inserted the XPSP2 Cd, and away we went. About 50% through the install came the blue screen of death. Something about an installation cab being corrupt. I panicked cause the EJECT button didn't work (Windows wasn't installed... nothing to recognize the CD)... so I restarted the installation again. Same blue screen of death.
By this time, my wife was home from the Giants game, and I was hunkered over my little silver monster, in the dark, oblivious to it now being Saturday NIGHT!
She looked at me in disgust, and muttered something about it's either me or Apple as she stormed out...
I continued with my panic about.. how do I get the CD out to return to the world of OSX, cause on every restart the machine tried to boot teh XPSP2 CD. I referred to the BC PDF printout, and it told me to hold down the mouse button to eject the CD. Cool.
So I restarted, and forgot to hold down the mouse button ... BUT ... I didn't get the blue screen of death. I had jostled the computer a bit, so maybe that caused the CD to spind differently, and it continued.
So after about 45 minutes, Windows was installed. I rand the BC Mac drivers Disk, and Windows froze. Had to restart.
Did that a couple of times, and it seemed to take finally.
I'm in Windows now, have done some updates... get a lot of fatal driver errors, and MSN 7.5 causes a major blue screen of death.
I am typing this with the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and using the Apple Bluetooth mouse... although the mouse sometimes tracks funny.
I've installed all the Adobe software, Macromedia software, Firefox, and some other stuff without too many issues.
Photoshop CS2 is BLAZING fast.
The wireless is great, picked right up, the networking works fine... I'm using the DVI out to a 23" Apple Cinema Display, and it's working fine, except every now and then the screen freezes for a milisecond. I think this screen is causing the persistent driver errors.
I'm not sorry I did it, I think it's absolutely cool to have 2 OS's on one MAC!!
It wasn't a SMOOTH install, but with a little luck I was able to weave my way through.
I'm 4 days in, we'll see how it goes...
