OSX In a Public Area

Hi, I'm running a Wireless Hotspot Company in the UK. We're just starting to install some iMacs at a few of our locations and am having some issues getting it all restricted so no one can modify.
I've tried simple finder, but have discovered a number of serious flaws. I'm now using a slightly restricted finder instead, however, I'm still finding that I can delete important files / folders without prompting.
Is there a way around this, any software etc....
Simon

Have you tried changing the permissions on the Library folder? You could make it (and all its contents) owned by say, the admin user but readable by the guest user.
You'd just have remember that you made this change whenever you repair permissions on the computer.
Another option would be to make a disk image of the guest account's home folder with all the setting you want in place. Then periodically a script could be run that restores the guest account's home folder to your default. You should be able to make a cron job for this to run whenever you like.

    Hi all,
We have experienced that a certain user can only see the public area of
a collaboration room although the user has member rights to see more

We have tried to remove the user from the room and add him again. It
    did not help.
Other users have been added before and after this user without problems.
What could be wrong with this user?

  • You can't open the application Start.osx because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

what does this error message mean? I am trying to use a disc that came along with a book I ordered for studying. However, when I try and run it, this is the error message I receive. "You can't open the application Start.osx because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Anything I can do to fix this and make it work?????

Many educational CDs have not been upgraded due to lack of funds in the educational market to pay for such updates.
This situation is due primarily to the fact that one of the major political parties in this country favors tax cuts to the rich while cutting federal educational support funding (or eliminating the federal Department of Education altogether).
However, you can restore Rosetta and run your educational CD if you install Snow Leopard Server ($20) into Parallels (up to $79) for use in Lion/Mt. Lion/Mavericks:

I installed a cd and when I try to open the application a message appears: "You can't open the application TOEFL.osx because PowerPC applications are no longer supported". I also tried installing it in Windows (Parallels) but couldn't find the .exe file, which appears in other computers with another version of windows. Could somebody help me please?

Power PC applications will not run in OS newer than 10.6.
This presumably applies to you although you have not said what OS you are using.

  • Attributing Documents in the public area of a Collaboration Room

Is there a way you can attribute documents to your taxonomy that are stored in the public area of a collaboration room?

Thanks for your response Stephen but I've already think about that.
Actually, the room part "KM Document" works with an external parameter manually entered by the user.
So, I just have to create an external parameter and enter the real path after the creation of the room.
Are there any other standard solutions ?

  • Public Area in Room Template

    Hello,
I created a room template which doesn't contain a public area. This works fine. Now I want to create a room template with public area. Therefore I copied the template without public area and tried to modify it. I changed the parameter <b>Access</b> from <i>private</i> to <i>public</i> in the <b>cmRoomExtensionSP2FP</b> extension for the documents. But I can't see any changes. The room does still not have a public access. Does anybody know,  what the problem is and what further steps I have to do?
    Regards,

    Hi Dominik,
you should also assign one or several pages to the public-Role
    Hope this helps

  • CFolder - Notifications at Public Area

    Hello experts,
I've a problem when I'm using the cFolder to send Notifications to the vendors.
When I send a Notification to all vendors in the Public Area folder, the Vendor 1 can see all the other Vendors that receive the message too, so he can see the vendors that were invited to the bid invitation (this can't occur).
    - All the vendors only have Visitor auhorization to the Public Area (only visualization)
The same occur when the vendor try to send a Notification via Public Area folder. When he clicks on the Create button, he can see all the other Vendors that are in the bid invitation.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks a lot.

You might think of finding a solution in scheduling the reports and then automatically send them to one ore more e-mail recipients.
Whether or not this feature is going to be supported in a next release is something we will have to wait on.

  • WLAN Security, Is Apple OSX Safer at public sites?

Hi, I am opening this up for a technical discussion for people that actually know the answers, Apple Techs please!
    In the article
    http://www.lanarchitect.net/Articles/Wireless/SecurityRating/
It leads you to believe only WEP enabled WLAN connections should be used, but in reality I am not that concerened about a neighbor piggy backing my home WLAN as I am concerned about some AH hacker stealing my personnal internet passwords and such, either at home but more of concern at hotel WLAN, public hot spots and now the fake mirror hot spots that are being used for cyber mining for credit card and other financial info.
My Question is this, is Apple OSX protected enough so that if by some accident you did connect it to a fake but working WLAN for internet use, can it be hacked without me knowing it? And part two, are passwords easy to get when using a 128 bit encrypted browser at https web sites like yahoo mail login, or a cradit card login site? In other words how much info can be stolen through the WLAN "airport on" state of the Mac and when is internet info at most risk? Are https login sites safe for passwords? I assume once you are in, and the site goes to http that all interent data is now easy to see? Or is the web browser still protecting it via 128 bit encryptiion? Thanks for any tech support only anwsers to this.

Any time you use a public wireless access node that provides no security then your computer is vulnerable. The likelihood of being hacked, however, is probably extremely low, but you can take some precaution by enabling the built-in firewall (Sharing preference pane.) You can also avoid sending anything that contains sensitive information you may not wish compromised when accessing a public WiFi node.
Many hotels that offer wireless access are usually behind routers and/or require local access authorization for guests only. But not all do.
As for protected networks Apple recommends using WPA2 rather than WEP because the latter is less compatible with Macs and is also an older technology.

  • Cannot connect to WiFi in public areas or private or Ad Hoc connections

    I have a 32 GB iPod Touch 2G that is running 4.2.1
All has been going well, until last week. I tried to connect to a public WiFi (that I have connected to 50 times or more) and it said "Cannot connect to Network". I tried everything that I know how to do, but nothing worked. I then went to another public WiFi (with WEP), but could not get on there either. I then went home and tried to connect to my computer through an Ad Hoc WiFi connection (since we do not WiFi at our house), but I was not able to connect there either.
I reset it, I synced it, but the problem persists.
I always have the iPod on Airport mode, so as not to run the battery down. I then take it off Airport mode, turn on WiFi, and wait for the Network to show up on the iPod Touch. I then press the Network that I want. It immediately gives me the check mark next to the Network name, then later it gives me the WiFi symbol at the top left of the screen. I then wait for the Login page...it never comes up. I then go to Safari to force it to come up, but nothing. It says that I am not connected to a Network. I then get fed up with it and try to turn off WiFi, but the Network name stays, even though the WiFi is Off. I then try to turn on the Airport mode, but the airplane does not show up. I try and try to get away from the network, but it will not reset to normal until I press the Home button and the On/Off button together. I then get the circle of dashes (but just a short 1 and 1/2 rotations - ODD), then the black screen. Then I press the On button and get the Apple symbol. Then I sign in and the Airplane is there and the WiFi is off...till I try again. No connections and then I have to repeat this to get it back to half way normal.
Please help me with this situation. I really do not want to restore the iPod Touch, since I do not have a WiFi network near me...and I have a lot of apps that would have to be set-up through WiFi (taking a lot of time). My fear (if you could call it that), is that if I restore the iPod Touch, and find out that the WiFi problem persists...then I will not be able to use a number of Apps that I use a lot.
There has to be a simpler answer to this situation.

+Comment on #2. I'm not aware of any offline apps working with an iPod touch that hasn't been jailbroken. If you have jailbroken your device, we really can't help you here per the terms of service of this website. However, if this just updated data for a legit app or a web app, then it you are going to have to get network access working for it to work and, as you have said, iTunes isn't going to do it.+
Answer to #2: For one thing, the iPod Touch that I have is NOT jailbroken. I have never jailbroken any of my devices. I am a big supporter of Apple products, because they work. If a device is jailbroken, essentially taking Apple's expertise out of the equation. If I wanted to do that, I would use Android, and suffer with the fragmentation that they suffer with (along with all the problems jailbroken devices have). Enough on that.
Offline Wiki is an approved app from the AppStore (it is Wikipedia in your pocket, without the Internet). You download the app from iTunes. It is useless till you then download the content (whichever language that you want - for example the one I want, English is 3 GB of space). Since I am not in a WiFi area, and I do not visit WiFi areas often (nor for any real length of time, downloading 3 GB of information takes hours (nearly three hours, when I first did it). The only reason that I was reluctant to Restore my iPod Touch, was to avoid having to do that process again, and not being able to use the app (which I use a lot) until I do spend the time to download the Wikipedia Database onto my iPod Touch.
+A comment on #1. Those websites that require you to login again - this is a function of the network setup at that site. In effect, they are expiring your lease as soon as you disconnect. When you log in again, you are treated as a completely new user.+
Answer to #1: Yes, I understand that. Thank you.
    Good luck on the restore.
Thank you. This, unfortunately was what I had to do. As expected, but not for sure, the WiFi is now working again. It seems that my iPod Touch got corrupted (within the iOS). The reinstalling wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, except I do not have the use of Offline Wiki (since my visit to the doctor yesterday was only for an hour, which I used to update all the other things that I needed WiFi access for. I started the download process, but it will take at least 2 hours to finish).
Conclusion: The only way to fix this situation, as far as I can tell, is to Restore your iPod Touch. Thank you for reading my long windedness. Also, thank you "luvlabs" for our conversation (though we haven't seen eye-to-eye much in the conversation, but I appreciate the time you spent to try. Thank you.

  • Help!  All text w/in OSX (Menus, File name) are "A"s in boxes

This started out today (Sunday, 3/11/07) after I installed the DST patch. I first noticed this in Quicken, but after I restarted my computer to attempt to fix the issue, the entire Mac OS is suffering from this problem.
The problem is that every menu, file name, and letter of text in the OS shows up as an "A" with a box around it. The only way I can navigate is by shortcut keys (as I cannot read the menus), and my knowledge of shortcut keys is limited. Text within program windows displays fine, but that's about it. Example - the Edit menu displays at 4 "A"s, all in their own box. It almost appears that the system font was changed.
Any suggestions on repairing this? I'm capable of simply formatting the drive and reinstalling Mac OSX, but I cannot easily backup all my data (cannot read file names or find the Export/Backup menu in most applications). Help!

Alright, reinstalling the OS was the ticket. Here's some details for anyone who runs into the same issue...
A little info about my MacBook first. I have Mac OS 10.4.8 with Boot Camp/Windows XP on another partition (about 10 gigs). After I was hit with the "A" box plague, some applications failed to open, including Quicken. It would error out with a system failure.
The solution was reinstalling Mac OS from the CD(s) that came with the computer. If done properly, you will not lose any of your data or settings.
Pop CD 1 into the drive and run the installer application. Your computer will restart and boot from the CD. At this point, I ran the Disk Utility software. A few minor errors were found and fixed. I then continued with the installation of Mac OSX. During installation you will be warned that your hard drive already has the OS installed. If you go into Options, you can select to archive the old OS and install a fresh copy. You will also have the option to restore your Home folder - do this if you wish to retain your data and settings. Continue with the installation as usual.
Your computer will restart when the installation is compete. You are done! When Mac OSX starts up, everything will be back to normal without loss of settings, programs or data. You will want to run the Software Update tool at this point.
I must say, even though I was disappointed that Apple Support would not help me with this issue because of their 90-day free support window, I am very impressed with how easy it is to fix their OS. I'm a customer for life.

  • My macbook  downloaded osx mavericks my files are gone help

Today I downloaded the new operating system osx maverick on my macbook pro.
I can no longer access any of my files.  My desktop is empty my
it is telling me I do not have permission to see contents
I tried loging in to both accounts on this computer but both are empty no files
My wife downloaded the same operating system on her IMAC 27" working ok so far
how do I get my files back?

    Hey artistonline,
If you go to  > About This Mac > More Info > Storage what do you see? Does it appear that your hard drive is empty? If you have a Time Machine Backup you can restore from it, or manually migrate your files back.

  • Start up questions requiring passwords when loading OSX...what are they??

Does anyone know of what questions OSX asks when you load the software? I had to re-install my OSX(actually archive) & it wants my password from the previous install. It gives me the "hint" but whatever answer I put in, it doesn't accept it. If I knew the actual question, it may help me remember it. Or....
is there another way around this?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Own Windows XP PC

If you're using a Mac OS X 10.3 install disk, you can "reset password" for the original user from the Installer menu. If you're using a Mac OS X 10.4 install disk, you can "reset password" from the Utilities menu.

  • Trouble claiming OSX Mountain Lion - When are you meant to receive the email?

When are you meant to recieve the confirmation email, it's been a day and I'm not sure if my claim has been successful or not. I bought my iMac from an official apple reseller who had not the mountain lion in stock yet.

Apple has been making changes all over the place in the last few days. With those changes come problems, like Email notifications for this forum were out for a day +. And some people have not been able to sign in to iTunes store. And some people have been unable to even sign up for the ML free upgrade.
So all these changes may affect the delivery of the ML code email. If it doesn't show in the next day or so then call Apple.
