Other uses for iSight camera??

I was just wondering:
Many DVD recorders have a firewire input for copying DV tapes - can the iSight camera be connected to make live recordings?
Some DV camcorders have DV input (for recording from other sources and copying iMovie projects back to tape) - can the iSight camera be connected to the DV input for aux camera?

Hi spacepiggy,

  • How do I use my isight camera live?

I have a 27 inch Imac. How do I use my Isight camera as a web cam? I have flashplayer 10, but it still won't work. Help?

Software always operates webcams, so you need to find software applications that does what you want.
Use your Mac's  > App Store... menu command to search for "webcam"
    (without quotation marks).
You can also search for other terms like "video chat",  "video conferencing",  "video surveillance", etc.
If you need other functions, some of the older apps in the list in this link are also still available:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
BTW, Flash 10 is out of date for OS X 10.7.2.
      • You can find the latest Flash version that works with you system using this page:
          http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
If you update, use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then follow Adobe's instructions here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/908/cpsid_90893.html
Be sure to uninstall your current Flash player before installing the new one.
Repair permissions again immediately following installation of the updated Flash player.
      • Be aware that the current Flash Player Preferences can  be configured in your Lion Mac's  > System Preferences...    These settings may be blocking Flash on a system-wide basis.
      •  Individual Flash settings are still configured in the same way as older versions:

Is there a way to use activity monitor to identify and kill the process controlling the isight? My apologies in advance if this sounds windows (task manager) like.
    Thanks

(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

  • Which Bag do you use for your Camera? What about the GadgetBag 300EG?

Which Bag do you use for your Camera? What about the GadgetBag 300EG?

I agree - it's all about preference.  I use the ThinkTank Retrospective 7.  I *love* ThinkTank's attention to detail...  everything from having a rain cover included with the bag, to having ingenius use of velcro (sp?) patches to enable you to "silence" the bag so it doesn't make the big "SCRATCH" sound when opening the bag during a quiet event, etc.
My best advice would be to do your research (which you're clearly doing) and have a clear understanding of the return policy wherever you buy it, and then don't be afraid to return it if you get it and feel it doesn't meet your needs.  A restocking fee is a small price to pay to not be stuck with a bag that doesn't work for you.  And if for any reason you get it and can't return it, there's always eBay.

  • Other use for Mini?

I have a pink 4Gb mini (first generation, I believe) that my daughter no longer uses as she rec'd a new Nano 3G for Christmas. I charged it up fully today and am running it to see how the battery performs -- has been running 5 hours and has one bar left so the battery seems fine.
My question is... are there other uses for an iPod Mini vs. selling it on eBay? Everyone in my family has a more recent iPod. I'm hoping there may be some creative people who have thought up some other uses for it.
    Thanks.

Yes, you can use it as external hard drive, but (my personal view) is not an idea insturment for the backup. Unless you are going to have the battery replacement (normally it needs to be replaced for every 18 months), I will leave my iPod with an iPod's dock system or connecting with my car stereo (using the car cig. adapter) - then you do not need to replace the battery

  • Is it possible to have other recording qualities for iSight camera?

I have just lashed out on +QuickTime Pro+, and the very first time I fired it up I thought: "Oh, Oh, I've wasted my money". Every other program I tried before I decided on QT Pro had the ability to use a variety of recording-quality settings for the iSight camera. With QT Pro I get just three:
    * MPEG-4 (320 x 240, ~ 264 kb/s)
    * H-264 (320 x 240, ~256 kb/s)
    * Native (640 x 480, 90 Mbits/s)
Not much of a variety. You either choose the low settings, or jump to the high setting at almost 400 times the data rate.
Is it possible to obtain a few more settings ( i.e. 640 x 480 using H.264) via third-party software or other technique?
Also, can I turn off sound recording if I so wish?

Thanks, RickToronto, for the suggestion about +QT Broadcaster+. A nifty little program and I'm sure I'm going to be able to put it to use sometime, but after testing the various compression options at 640 x 480, including NONE, I could not get the frame rate greater than about 10, whereas using the NONE option in +QT Pro+ allowed me to get 640 x 480 at 18 fps. There must be a fair amount of overhead in using +QT broadcaster+.
Looks like I'll be sticking to +QT Pro+, recording using the NATIVE option, then compressing afterwards. Doing that certainly shows up the amount of computation needed for compression. It took my G5 about 6 hours to compress one hour of 640 x 480 @ 18fps (~40 GB). And in addition, I got the impression that the output looks better from +QT Pro+ than from +QT Broadcaster+, but that might just be my imagination.
One last matter: one of the options in +QT Broadcaster+ -- the control options for iSight -- look almost identical to those I saw in a program called +BTV Pro+. Would the +BTV Pro+ fellow have 'borrowed' the look from Apple, or has Apple licensed them from him?

  • Using the isight camera in the bootcamp setup with windows 8.1

    Hi
I am running OSX Maverick in a bootcamp setup with Windows 8.1 and have played around with the isight camera but I would like to know what folder the photo's/video's are sent to?
Also, are there any settings or user guide for the isight camera in Windows 8.1?
    Thanks

I don't use Boot Camp, but does anything here help you? Boot Camp - Apple Support.
My look there did not show anything about the new Windows 8.1.  The latest I saw was Windows 8.
Brave01Heart wrote: ... what folder the photo's/video's are sent to?...
The answer will be wherever the app you are iusing for the capture stores them unless you change the default location.  This answer is the same for either Windows or Apple operating systems.

  • Light for iSight camera?

I keep having a problem where if I am working on the couch or on the road, the lighting is too dim for anyone to see me on iChat. I remember there being a light for the old iSight camera, does anyone know if there is something similar for the built-in iSight camera? It would help out a lot.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello BayArea MacFan
With the suggestions above, you have several good options.
I don't know of anything like the old Griffin SightLight for use with built-in iSight.
I have a SightLight, but use it only on the road. For daily use at home, I light my face with a small clamp-on lamp like this one. I tried several different bulbs and settled on a small (9 watt) "warm" toned fluorescent bulb that gave the best color balance without being too bright or too hot.

Not sure I understand your question because Photo Booth is "fun" software for iSight.
However, you can use any OS X image editor application to modify images
(cud put hats on make cool faces and stuff) you have captured
with your iSight. The editor app I use is Adobe PhotoShop Elements.

  • Using External iSight camera instead of built-in with iMovie

I have a MacBook Pro with built in iSight as well as an external iSight camera. I want to shoot some instructional knitting videos with the external camera, holding it over the shoulder of the knitting instructor while she discusses what she is doing. When I go to iMovie, I only see the option of using my built-in iSight. How can I work around this and use the external camera? Thanks for your help with this!

    Welcome to Discussions,
Your external iSight must be connected and turned on before it can work with iMovie.
You can test whether your external iSight is working by using the suggestions here:

When your external iSight is working, you can select it as explained in this iMovie Help article:

  • Cannot use two iSight cameras at the same time

I use an external display on my laptop. Close the lid and work on the external display. I connect an external iSight, and a message says that the camera is already in use?!
Can I not use two iSights at the same time?

    Hello Webmaster
You can have two iSights connected at one time, but, as explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by one application at a time. (my emphasis) Check for any running applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight. (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.)
Different apps select between multiple connected cameras in different ways. For instance, you use iChat > Preferences... > Video settings to select which camera to use, but iMovie 6 uses a drop-down menu as shown in this picture:
The suggestions in How to Troubleshoot iSight should help you determine whether one of your iSights is causing trouble. I suggest you test each one separately and without your external display or other peripherals to rule out possible conflicts like the one that user BombCreative reports in his post at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5868843#5868843
After you are certain that your iSights are working individually, test them when both are connected. After your system successfully passes these tests, you can add your external devices back one-by-one to be sure one of them is not causing the problem.

  • Using external isight camera with imac intel

is there a procedure to use my 'old' portable isight camera with my new imac intel?

i did some tests and here's how is is done:
plug in the FW external isight camera; open SKYPE and prior to calling on SKYPE; go to preferences.; go to 'video' and there NOW two selections 'built-in isight' and 'isight'; select 'isight' and that will be the camera you will using once you make the SKYPE call; HOWEVER if you want to switch back to the 'built-in isight' you have to 'hang up'; go back to preferences and select 'built-in isight' and re-make the call. BTW Apple care in the far far east was next to no help. maybe apple care will read this post and then THEY TOO will have the answer.

  • Use external isight camera instead of built-in isight

Is it possible to have an external isight camera be default instead of the built-in camera at the top of the monitor?  I'd like to use the external camera, which is more portable than the monitor, with such programs as Skype, but -(on Skype at least) I'm not given the option to choose anything except the built-in iSight cam.  Can the external iSight be the default cam?
    Thanks.
    Lee

Not to sure if an external webcam (iSight) can be the "default" webcam.  Usually, the video app gives you choices of which webcam to use.
